We run Maas360 to control approximately 200 android mobiles. One thing lacking in this MDM is to be able to populate the contacts with important numbers. We need to be able to put an Icon on the home screen of all the mobiles so that when they tap the icon it will dial a special landline number that we have for emergencies. I have looked through a lot of the dialer apps but the all seem to use the phones contacts which we don't have any control over. Can anyone think of a way we can achieve this? Currently google chrome is greyed out on the phones due to limiting them to no internet and no playstore access.
Ideas anyone?

Q: why do strange apps have full permissions?
I have learned so much from everyone here since addopting android. I've recently rooted my thunderbolt and i've been looking at alot of the system info. There is alot of stuff that seems quite questionable (and slightly shady). For example there is a widget running in the background constantly called htc clock widget. This has prettymuch every system permission, and i have no idea why. Also checkin services has the same permissions. I've tried to research both apps extensively but i can barely find any info, every one seems to have questions, but no answers. I might be paranoid, but if something is going to have access to that much info i'd like to know why it needs it. Actually the only info i could find on the subject was through "bing" which seems sort of strange to me. If anyone has any info regarding this, i would greatly appreciate it.

Well if you think HTC is stealing your info from the clock widget you are very paranoid about technology lol. What permissions worry you about it. Need to be more detailed than "every permission. "

Well i dont know how to copy from the app info so ill summarize.
Both clock widget (not the clock mind you), and checkin service have as follows
Messages: read attachments, edit sms and mms, read sms and mms, recieve sms and mms
Location: course and fine
Personal info: calender events, read write browser history and bookmarks
Network: create bluetooth connections, full internet access
Your accounts: google mail, manage account list, use credentials
Storage: modify sd contents
Phone calls: modify phone state, read phone state identity
System tools: bluetooth, change network connectivity, change wifi state, change wimax state, modify global system settings, prevent phone from sleeping, retrieve running apps, set time zone, write access point name, write sync settings
Well thats what the widgets got, seems like alot to me. Htc checkin service i have read about and i guess its googles way of recieving anonymous user data. And i guess you can disable it in the build.prop. Any ideas?
How do you figure the time stamps get in your messages, files, etc...? Something has to relay the time to the apps so it's correct.

a friend of mine bought a few days ago a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" to manage his clients (he's a doctor).
He started to build his contact library (he doesn't have an android phone and no gmail contacts) adding name, surname, eventually mail and phone number and in the "Note" field he wrote all the note he'd taken. BUT this field has a characters' limit, and he can't add even a letter anymore (for the most visited client of course).
I tried to search for an app for this purpose but I can't find anything. I don't even search ONLY an app, it can be enough another method using the in-build feature of the tablet and android.
I searched for some CRM app, but most of them are ugly (since it's not a power user the more simple and clean is the better) and not optimized for a tablet. I found Insightly, but it's only online, and if he does'nt have a wifi network around he can't, not only record the new data, but also access to the old ones! They MUST be always available.
I thought about a simple folder + text file in G Drive, but these are only online too. Dropbox, too.
If it can interact with the G Mail contacts (the Note field is very useful at this) it would be wonderful, otherwise he'll build up his library with his contacts.
How can I do to have these data always on the tablet (cloud sync is not absolutely necessary)??? Any idea for an app or an alternative method?

He bought a tablet to use for work, without any idea on how he would use it for work or if it would even do what he wanted? If he throws money around like that, why not recommend him to get an app written for his company and it's needs. There are many app developers who design and write custom apps for clients.
Whenever I tap on a location (e.g., address in contacts) AT&T navigation takes over. I don't even get a choice to select a default. I disabled AT&T navigation, but this didn't help - selecting the address doesn't do anything anymore. This is all on a HTC One with stock rom.
Next I rooted the device and flashed the latest CleanROM 4.0 from 7/31. This rom doesn't have the AT&T navigator. Unfortunately, it still behaves the same (selecting an address in contacts doesn't do anything). On all of my previous Android phones I was able to select Google Maps as default. This doesn't seem to be possible with the HTC One (at least with the roms I have tried). I also tried using a default app manager without any success.
Any suggestion on how to enable google maps as default navigation up is appreciated.
Open Google Maps, select the arrow icon at the top and start typing a contact name in the destination box. It's a round about way of accomplishing the same thing you seem to be after. There's no way to set Maps as the default any longer.
Thanks jdk2. It's not a perfect but reasonable workaround.
I am wondering about your statement that there is no way to set the default anymore, though. After all, AT&T Navigator is used as default if you don't disable it. If AT&T can bind their stuff, it should be technically possible to bind other apps to it.
Come to think of it, this might be an issue just with contacts. Any other app that deals with addresses allows me to pick Google Maps.
Is it possible for someone to put together an App or Dialer enhancement which is able to automatically look up incoming phone numbers on the internet (assuming a data connection is available) using sites like these:

and display the available Exchange name/description thereby giving an immediate approximate location for the calling number?
I search Google Play and couldn't see anything along these lines.
I realise the two sites listed are for the UK but presumably there are similar "reverse directory" lookup sites for other countries?
If anyone knows of such an App could you point me in the right direction?
I decided to try and lock down my younger brothers Nexus 7 so that he could have his favorite apps but have no access to the internet. Android 5.0 has made this a little easier with the addition of Restricted Profiles.
However there is a major flaw.
Firstly i can disable access to all browsers etc but it does not have the option to disable access to settings. From there you can browse to "Accounts" then "Google Ads" which then gives you full access to the internet and acts as a mini web browser. This defeats the whole purpose of a restricted profile lol, is Google aware of this?
What i need is a way to disable access to settings. I have tried App lock apps but he manages to beat them by repetitively punching a bunch of random numbers
Is there a way to disable the quick settings and notification panel, so that when he tries to pull it down, it won't do anything?
I have hidden the settings icon from Nova so that he can't access this way. But all it takes is a simple swipe down, tap the settings icon in the quick settings panel, go to Accounts, then Google ads and you have access to a full web browsing experience LOL.
Did i mention he's 7? I'm scared of what he'll be able to do at 16
I realise it will probably require root. I'm willing to try anything at this stage!
Any suggestions?
