I just ordered my Sprint Hero online and it should be here by Monday. I have read all the Tutorials on how to root and how to Flash the custom ROMs. But I have two questions which I may have missed in all that reading.
1) Is there a possibility where further down the road an official update will not allow anyone to root their phone?
2) Can I root and do a nandroid backup. And not install any ROM for a while?
My goal is to play with the Stock Sprint Hero for atleast a month or so before I feel the need to try Custom ROMs.

Answers below!
1) If you update via an RUU, there is always a chance that HTC will replace the SPL with something that is uncrackable (or at least currently uncrackable). This occurred with later RUUs, and this is why the Goldcard method is often needed in order to root the phone.
When I had my G1 and received push updates, you needed to effectively "switch off" the auto-update routines to avoid getting a stock update that could prevent rooting further down the line. Since Sprint seem to push OTA updates out to CDMA Hero's so it is always possible that this could cause an issue for rooted ROMs, but I'd have though most custom ROMs would've switched off OTA updates anyway.
2) Yes

Dave
Thanks Dave.
Dave,
I rooted my Sprint Hero, not necessarily for speed, more so I dont have to look at those horrible apps that Sprint doesnt want to let anyone remove.
I successfully rooted, nandroid backed up and removed the Sprint ware and installed THIS OPTIMIZER FILE (love the lockscreen) but have not decided whether I'm going to take the plunge into custom ROM world. I am actually impressed with how this phone runs (for now) and dont yet need to free up internal drive space.
My question is this: Essentially having the stock rom, is the fact my phone is rooted likely to cause a problem with future Sprint updates?
If so, can you unroot and leave the Sprint-crap out or do you have to go back to 100% absolute stock?
Thanks
I have searched...and maybe I just missed it. I am looking for a downloadable RUU that is unrooted 100% stock. I have been directed to all kinds of places that have and RUU but it is typically rooted, or its on some stupid hosting site that is just ridiculous. I want to make sure that I can recieve OTA upgrades from now on without issue and I just don't know if I can the way the phone sits now.
I downloaded, I believe its Scottsroms.com, (or something like that and is what I am currently running.) It was an RUU and seems bone stock, but I know it is rooted...
or to fix the whole question....how do I make sure I can receive OTA upgrades is all I really want and that they will go on without issue.

I've searched and havent found anything on how to unroot, relock and put the phone back to factory. Ive found how to do it with the old build but not on VRALL4. So how do i do this, wheres the files needed??
I havent looked at going back to stock honestly, but if it truly is a revert, once its reverted you should be prompted for the L4 update via OTA, hope that helps
OK so here is the story and I was debating if this is the right place to post but I do feel it is more on the developing side. I originally rooted and unlocked my bootloader following Casuals method and everything was just fine. I had an option to sell the phone in preparation for buying the GS4 so I used the return to stock method posted in the forums to return my device completely to stock. After doing so everything was also fine. I received an update to LL4 and that went OK straight from Verizon but last night when the VRAMC3 update was pushed to my phone it soft bricked it. It ultimately was stock on the splash screen stating Samsung Note 2. After trying to ODIN back to stock with multiple FAILS I was able to get it back to the Root66 MR Robinson by using the pit file but every time I try to update and or root/unlock bootloader it soft bricks again. I am assuming that the update that was pushed updated my bootloader and as of now I am stuck till there is a new bootloader Jailbreak. If not I would love some instruction on how to get my phone rooted with an unlocked bootloader or a flashable ODIN file that will at least get me to the latest VRAMC3 fully stock ROM. Thank you for the HELP.
want relocked BL running newest stock via odin flash without tripping flash counter
Edit; I never did manage to relock the bootloader. However, Verizon still accepted the device since it appeared close enough to stock. I used the alternative restore and triangle away to bring it 95 percent to stock. So I can safely say from my experience that if this is your problem you will probably be fine. It's been a few months and still no new charges on my bill for out of warranty device but YMMV

I am in a similar situation. I am sending the device back for warranty service since the screen must have burnt out or something. The digitizer catches a touch but there is no light emanating from the screen and since the device was purchased March 28th it is completely under warranty. As it is obvious the root modifications did not cause the screen issue, I do not wish to get a new device via insurance claim and so I am getting another sent.
but my issue is after managing to run triangle away via screencast/adb, how the hell does one relock the device if it's been upgraded to vramc3? from what I have searched, and trust me I have been searching the past two days, which led me here and a few other threads btw, it appears that once the device is on vramc3 it cannot odin back to anything else or it will fail on sboot.bin. And I am not finding any stock odin packages for vramc3, so how the hell does a person take this bad boy back to stock and relock the bootloader for sending to vzw for service? not only that but I can no longer activate recovery since I wouldnt have access to screencast and there is absolutely no way I am sending this device back with even the most minute amount of data in tact so it can be sold to the highest bidder or handed over via an illegal court order for mass search and seizure. anybody have experience with this? i am at the point where i think the only thing I can do is flash the alternate restore for vral but wouldnt that trip my flash counter, and then when they check the device it would probably OTA and softbrick, which I do not want them to have to deal with.
Hello all, just wondering if there is a root yet for zv6. Im still on a rooted zv6 and dont want to upgrade for loss of root.

Do you meant you're on a rooted ZV4?
There is no root for ZV6, but there are pre-rooted ZV6 ROMs available.
Stock ZV6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3/development/rom-stock-zv6-base-odex-deodex-t2949087
Debloated, tweaked and improved AV6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3/development/rom-barrin-odexed-deodexed-t2950747
So pre rooted zv6 is the same? Hiw do i go about installing

again, i stress for clarity on these sites discussing ROM's, root etc.... please know what you are talking about when you post here. having a rooted zv6 and wondering if there is a root for zv6 is just nonsense. its the same thing. the only way to get root if you have the update (zv6) is to roll back to zv4, root, add custom recovery, then flash zv6 rooted rom to it. not just that easy, but fairly easy on most other devices. here, for the stock zv6 to zv4, i can not find any clear answer on the commands and DOES IT WORK. no one has posted with any success in attempting it. i find it hard to believe i can flash, wihtout recovery, to a rooted zv4 from the stock bootloader. do you know if this is possible meyerweb?
thanks

I'm not really sure what you're asking. Are you currently on ZV4 or ZV6? Are you rooted or not?
(1) If you're on ZV4, you can root with Stump, then flash the bumped TWRP which unlocks the bootloader. (There's a thread on how to do this Search for "Bump" and make sure you use the Sprint version.) Then you can flash a pre-rooted ZV6 ROM.
(2) If you're on the factory, non-rooted ZV6 ROM, there's no way to root it. You'll have to use LG's flashtool to revert to the stock ZV4, then follow the steps above.
(3) If you're on a rooted ZV6, then you must have done the steps in (1), above already.
If you're asking if reverting to ZV4, then doing (1) above works, then yes. People have done it successfully. But using flashtool will wipe your phone and all data on internal storage.

for me specifically, i'm asking about 2. i am on zv6, the way i got the phone unfortunately. but noone is saying if they have had success flashtooling back to zv4. i'm an htc and galaxy experienced phone user. have done those roots, recoveries, etc... but they even say, rolling back from a stock rom, non-rooted, is usually impossible, without first acquring root in current stock rom. i know they are publishing 'how-to's' on how to roll back to zv4 stock from zv6 stock, but there hasnt been any confirmation yet on the thread that i could tell. i even posted, asking if anyone has had success, but i do not see it yet. so i'm asking you, do you know if anyone has succeeded at flashtool to zv4 from zv6? i'm taking it, when you roll back to zv4, its stock, un-rooted, correct? i downloaded all the tools, tot's and dll but over two sets of instructions on what dll to use and when. so i'm not risking bricking this because once again, the guru's do not clarify to us 'underlings' the exact process. I had the same experience with the htc and galaxy phones. its like they are talking to each other only and the process is implied because of the experience. well after hundreds of resets , rom switches, etc with my galaxy, i think i get what they mean in that system of phones. but this LG is totally new and uses different terms, tools and processes. if they worked in IT they'd know what technical writing is, so i'm assuming they might be non-it people and thus the confusion on how to explain , in simple concise steps, so that others may join in. If they did that, more would join in and enable the community to grow exponentially. i've heard many IT freinds say they wont try it because they were confused, or it didnt make sense, or they heard the horror stories. I have lived the horror stories, but there is usually a way out of the boot loop or bricked device situation. problem is, with so little about the LG out there, i dont want to be waiting for weeks/months to get it back to work.
thanks for your help.
LG has not implemented an anti-rollback feature in ZV6 (like Samsung did on their more recent ROMs). And using Flashtool completely replaces all the existing partitions on your phone, so it doesn't care what was there before (rooted, not-rooted, ZV4 or 6, or anything else).
I don't see anyone confirming they did it, but it's been suggested many times, and I haven't seen anyone say it didn't work, either.
Edit: Here's a post from someone who did this successfully. Post # 186: http://forum.xda-developers.com/spr...g-g3-ls990-t2852042/post57504184#post57504184

And yes, you can roll back to zv4. It's in one or both of those threads I linked above.
