Where do custom ringtones go? - OnePlus 7T Pro (Regular & McLaren) Q & A

I'm trying to add custom ringtones and notification sounds to the stock picker list. I've already tried the usual spots ("media", "media -> audio", and the root directory of the internal storage), but none of those worked. My device isn't rooted, so I can't put them in the system storage. And I keep over a thousand songs on my phone, so using the "Ringtone from internal storage" option isn't practical either.
So the question is... Does anybody know where the files should go? Or did they remove the option completely from OOS?

I haven't moved my files over yet, so I'm not 100% sure. And I haven't been on OnePlus in years either. But I just downloaded a ringtone from Zedge and it immediately showed up in the audio system settings (media picker) as a ringtone option. There is also a ringtones folder in the root of your internal storage. Maybe try that.

Yeah, that's the third location I mentioned having tried. Unfortunately, they didn't show up. I tried rebooting to kick in the media scanner, but I'll try forcing the scan manually, since it worked for you there. Maybe it just didn't scan yet when I checked that spot. Thanks for the feedback.

Good luck. Also, remember that you have to select "ringtone from internal storage" in the picker. I'm sure you knew that though...it's basically common sense.

Yeah, I was hoping to avoid that list, since it pulls up all 1000+ songs in my phone. Tough to scroll through 1000+ files to find a ringtone. But it didn't show up there either. Forced media scan didn't help either. Very unusual. My shiny new phone must hate me... lol.

Oh I see what you're trying to do. Yeah, I don't know about that either. Normally you can also separate ringtones from notifications. I'll play around with it and see if I can get files added to the 'main' list.

Mine are in /sdcard/Ringtones and /sdcard/Notifications as an .ogg file, as they have been since Android 2.x

[Q] Ringtone Issues, any help is appreciated!

Thanks in advance to anyone that can offer help with this. I've had my Atrix since launch and there's been about 4 times now (all seemingly after i've hooked the phone to computer with either phone portal, windows sync, or mass storage) where the assigned ringtones for contacts and even my regular ringtone has been changed or reassigned to some random song from my library. I don't know if there's something to hooking it up and it messes with the memory that juggles the ringtones/songs or what. Does anyone else have this problem and if so, has it been addressed/fixed? Thanks in advance for any help offered.
I have the exact same issue and have been posting about it on the Motorola forum as well. Over there the Motorola folks ask you questions and try to get a fix out to everyone, so please check it out if you haven't already.
My issue has happened a lot morethan yours it seems, however, I use extra batteries, so the phone reboots more often.
This is what I posted over there a little while ago:
Internal phone storage keeps disappearing
The "Disappearing ringtones" discussion was closed and merged with this one, but my issue is not the same as the internal memory being wiped.
My files are still on the card and internal memory, but the contacts, alarms, messaging, calendar, etc apps can't remember the tones I set.
I have copied the files to the following locations with the same issue recurring:
/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/system/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard-ext/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard-ext/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
Even after moving them with RootExporer to the "non-mountable" storage (/system) they are still reassigning and setting to "unknown".
Possibly related issue. The playlists I create with MixZing, winAmp, and astro are empty are the phone reboots.
Occasionally I get the "no files" error when I check the mounted card in file manager, but if I manualy unmount and remount the card, they are still there.
I keep missing calls, texts and having my alarms "silent". This is getting frustrating. I bought the Atrix on launch day so I need to exchange NOW if that is what is needed.
Other than the above and the losing data connection issue, I LOVE THIS PHONE
Yeah, i've placed my ringtones (all .m4a format) on both the internal/external memory slots and for some reason, when it gets hooked up i'm in the same boat you are...very frustrating i've missed calls and messages as well. surprising that no one from Moto has a resolution for it...
I've run into the same problem, and was planning on moving 'em into the /system/media folder...but it sounds like that won't fix it. Drats.
I've had this issue as well. The random song problem seems to only affect contacts I have set up with a custom tone. No telling what song/sound will play for which contact. Otherwise it has simply changed my default ringtone to a particular mp3 that then becomes the default tone. Really weird.
I do still have the issue with the files in the /system folder, but much less. So I would try them there to lessen the problem. Westill need a complete fix though.
This issue is still a problem. There are even some apps that can't see the files on the internal card or external card. Even after the OTA update this problem is driving me crazy.
I think you dont hear about this issue more because some people dont connect there phone to the computer or remove the battery often. It seems to be a problem with reading the info off the card when it is remounted. On my captivate when I remounted the card it would always scan the card. This phone doesn't.
Any ideas.
Yeah I had this problem too. Was the only thing, and I mean the only thing I didn't like about this phone. I found the only way to fix it is to root the phone and move your personal ringtones to the '/system/media/audio/ringtones' folder using Root Explorer (you can buy it oin the market. Great app BTW). This solved all my problems. I know it's not "right" but it works great. Now I have zero problems with this phone.

[Q] After 2.3.4 OTA update, contact specific ringtone won't work

As mentioned in the title. The contact specific ringtone used to work with 2.2. Then I got the OTA to 2.3.4, rooted my Atrix 4g. Now no matter what ringtone I assign to the contact, it always plays the default ringtone. Anyone can help me with this?
Didn't notice it until I read this post. My custom ringtones that I set in 2.2 still work but I cannot seem to change them. Where is the setting in 2.3? I've been looking in edit, contact but don't see it. Is this feature even in 2.3?
Edit: Nevermind found the setting under menu, options when viewing the contact. They seem to be working fine.

it's been moved in 2.3.x , took me a while to search on how to do this.
Go to contacts, select a contact, hit the menu button and select options, there will be a ringtone section there.
edit: nm you found it .
OP, where are the assigned ringtones stored? internal/external memory or in /system/media/audio/ringtones?
Thanks for the reply.

You could try moving the files (not copy) to the internal sd memory. However, its a known general Android issue (at least with 2.2.2) where assigned ringtones switch to the default ring or a random ringtone whenever the external/internal memory is unmounted (power off your phone, plug into your computer) and then mounted again. Very frustrating. The only surefire fix that I know of is to root and move the ringtones into /system/media/audio/ringtones . I did this soon after I got my Atrix. No more lost ringtone assignments.
Before moving my ringtones to /system, I think once my phone ringtone switched to a google voicemail wav file...that was interesting .
Much appreciate, I will try it out

That's strange, do the sound files play properly? You mentioned you had them before the update so I would think the files themselves would be ok.
Yes, they play properly. Another thing I found out is that when I choose sound for the alarm clock, I can no longer choose "Music". When I click on "Music", the pop up dialog only shows OK and Cancel buttons. It used to display all the music files I have available on both internal and external SD cards.

[Q] SD Card and Poweramp help

I have found a folder called "ext_sd" and It has everything i have on External sd.
So poweramp is getting these 2 folders and putting multiple files in my library, And i can't uncheck that from the files in the settings because it always rechecks its self.
And if i delete one of the duplicates, it deletes both of them.
Please help, it's really bothering me!
So is there anyway to delete the "exr_sd" file on the internal SD, or just stop it from showing everything on my external sd card?

Oops, somehow I thanked your post. Anyways, I think I had the same problem before. I want to say I just unchecked the primary sdcard folder, and it worked fine. I have to say though, Poweramp drives me nuts. I've had so many crashes and issues with every version I tried that I don't even use it anymore. One bug is that if I skip too many tracks ahead too quickly, then I have to force close even to get a song to play at all.
Also, when the EQ is active, sound quality takes a pretty big hit. I switched to Mortplayer with barely any regrets. Sometimes I use Poweramp, but until they fix it, Mortplayer is my go-to player.
I had this issue awhile ago also. To fix this you need to go into settings and locate the option to specify which folder the music is in.
The key is to uncheck ALL the boxes and then only selext the one folder on your sdcard with music. For example, uncheck all boxes and only check the box for sdcard/ext_sd/music.
For some reason Poweramp always checks and applies two folders for music on the sdcard because of the symlink of the sdcard to ext_sd.

Thanks guys, I unchecked everything except for the "ext_sd" folder and that seems to have fixed it.

This maybe isn't useful to you, but I'm having exactly the same problem. I'm running CM10 FXP133 on my Xperia Ray. Wrote a post a bout it here.
So I guess we're both equally desperate. Anybody please help!

Not sure if this is any good (I don't have time to try it out right now), but I found this.

edit: Nope. Sorry. Didn't work. Crap.
Looks like its a problem with the latest nightly.. it was working fine last release...

I partially solved my problem. Something had put a .nomedia file in /sdcard, which quite naturally led to problems. I removed the file and did a new scan and now I got photos in the gallery again. Apollo is still empty though, so I'm kinda pulling my hair here. Done the obvious stuff (reboots, clearing cache, purging app data).
/Daniel
Ha! Found the rest of the solution. Seems the media scanner doesn't scan all folders anymore but just some (found out about it in this post). I moved some of my music to /sdcard/downloads, run a scan and suddenly it's there in Apollo.
Oh, and the .nomedia in sdcard root appeared again. No idea where it comes from, but it seems like a good idea to check for it and delete it once in a while. Strange things happen...
Oh. And sorry to the OP for hijacking this thread. I hope some of my mumbling is useful to you
/Daniel
I reflashed rom again, and now in gallery and apollo, media is showing.
Maybe it's a problem with Rom Manager, because that pushed .nomedia files in wrong folders.

Similar thing happened to me on CM9, Xperia mini. I deleted the .nomedia file and cleared the app data on music players and things are fine now.
My status on this one right now is that scanning mostly works. It refuses to scan some directories though. If I move all my music to /sdcard/music it's scanned, but in /sdcard/subsonic/music where it's always been before it's not. The only big problem with this is that for example /sdcard/ringtones is not scanned. So according to the system I no longer have any custom ringtones. This gotta be a bug, right?
/Daniel
Maybe you could try another music app like winamp. Because there you can do a manually media scan and as far as I know you can choose the folder where it should scan manually, too. Maybe give it a shot

at first i couldn't find my ringtones, put one in sd/ringtones and in the system/media/audio//ringtones
in doing all this i ran SDrescan and rescan media root multiple times.
now i've got two of the same showing up.
one thing the messed me up is that the ringtone filename is not used on the menu.
instead, the ringtone menu is pulling the metadata to tile it.
so I've got my filename 'ringtone.mp3' but it show up in the menu as 'song'

Ok. I also ended up putting my ringtones in /system/media/audio//ringtones which solves my problems. The media scanner still doesn't want to have anything with the ones in /sdcard/ringtones to do. Guess the media service will need some polishing before CM10 is released

ROM Mod Question LOOK!! New Helpful Info!!

I have extracted some of the notification and ringtones that I like from other JB builds to use in CNA 3.6.6 and placed them in system/media/audio/notifications or system/media/audio/ringtones as appropriate. I have also set permissions to rw-r--r-- on the files I added.
My question is what else do I need to do so they show up on the list where I actually choose what tone I want to use. The only ones that are visible on the list are the ones that came standard with CNA 3.6.6.
All files are in ogg format and after doing the above steps they do not stick after a reboot. What has happened is after reboot they are not listed or, if they are, they will dissappear. I discovered this after setting them and then missing calls after a while. When this happened I checked in the sound settings and the tone listed was either "unkown" or a number was there instead of the tone I selected. This happens with apps that are part of the ROM and with third party apps. This issue does not happen if I stick with the stock choices. I also did not experience this with Froyo or GB builds, only with ICS and JB.
Thanks
Make a 'Notifications' and 'Ringtones' folder on the root of your SD card. Place the files there, reboot.
That is where I moved them from for the same reason. I was thinking having them in /system/media/audio/notifications or /ringtones would fix it. I'll give it a shot and see.

Thought id just throw it out there as a last resort. Third party apps sometimes will do the trick. Been using this one for some time now. Give it a go if need be and see if it helps.

I did this ^^^ and put the tones back on the SD card as Acvice suggested and it is working fine again. Thanks for the suggestions!!
For those who are curious, I found a better fix for this.
I have bounced around a little recently (CM7, AOKP, Liquid Smooth) and I came back to CNA 3.6.6. Well, I had to copy and paste some ringtones and notification tones into the ROM again so I could have the ones I really like.
So, I did the following:
Copy and paste the ones I wanted into /system/media/audio/notifications or system/media//audio/ringtones as needed.
Change permissions to rw-r--r--
Now, at this point they did not show up in the list when I went to choose them until after reboot. BUT, would disappear and reappear at random. When they disappeared my phone would not ring audibly because it "lost" the associated ringtone or notification tone.
So, I place them in the root of the sd card and I could choose them from there. But doing this had problems, too. If you connect to a pc the sd card would not be accessible by the phone. So what happens? The phone doesn't ring audibly because it "lost" the association to the ringtone on the sd card and I would have to go into settings and choose it again. It was getting to be a headache.
This time, I made a discovery. Using root explorer, I changed ownership on the newly transplanted ringtones. The new setting is as follows:
Owner: 0-root
Group: 0-root.
The old setting were system 1015 and sd card. Under the new ownership everything works perfect so far. I can connect to pc via usb, reboot, or whatever and the assigned sound setting stays put.
Hope this helps anyone who has had the sane issue!
