Hi everyone,
I am taking a poll to guage interest in the S4 Community for donating to and obtaining Carbonrom on the Verizon Galaxy S4.
CarbonRom is an aftermarket firmware based on the Android Open Source Project. I am not affiliated with any of the development of this rom. I am just a huge fan of their work and would love to see this rom come to our beloved S4. Having a device in hand to develop provides better success in providing a quality product. I am hoping this poll will help convince Carbonrom to purchase an S4 and begin development of it.
Here is a link to their goo.im developer page!
http://goo.im/devs/carbon
So what say ye!
UPDATE 5/28/13
There is now a secondary Carbon paypal link located here:
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=T447T4BPVX2TY
THIS LINK IS STRICTLY FOR DONATIONS TO HELP FUND THE PURCHASE OF A VERIZON GALAXY S4 FOR TEAM CARBON.
This link will remain open until the goal (cost of a used S4) is reached. Should the goal not be obtained, or one is obtained by Team Carbon by another method, the monies will be refunded. All donations will be recorded and added to the OP, so there is full transparency on our way to the goal. Let's help Team Carbon get this device so our beloved S4 can get some lovin!
DONATION LIST:
1. David M. -$10
2. Thomas S -$8

I had some problems on the S3 and went to Liquid / I do think that the developer has some talent and even lended some support ($$) but eventually went to Liquid prior to selling the S3. On the Touchwiz side, ScottsRoms always worked for me.
Thanks for the support guys. If enough is raised, I'd definitely like to support this device. I'm convinced that like the s3, this is going to be as close as we get to a nexus on Verizon.
justreboot, i'm not sure when you had your issues, but 1.7 is very solid, and in my opinion the nightlies even more so. Either way, 4.3 is going to be a complete rebase. We've got some exciting ideas in store.
I would do dirty, unforgivable things for Carbon on the GS4.

Oh. Oh my.
Looking at loki, the new bootloader unlock, I can say we'll definitely need to have a test unit to dev with. I'm not willing to blind dev on such a nice device anyway - you end up with a substandard rom in my opinion - but this one in particular will need more attention, since the bootloader unlock isn't a released tool so much as something we would need to integrate into the build process. On the plus side, it looks like we'd be able to do so fairly easily so we should be able to still have nightlies and the like.

I almost never go in Q & A, lol. I am not sure I can do testing if it is alpha-ish or if you need technical feedback, but I can run a beta that boots through its paces...basically like UAT. Edit: and i can do logcats, heh.
Agreed. Still something that should be tested and used if it is to be properly maintained.

was a reply to Cordell's earlier post about integrating it into squisher. Didn't notice the page 2. I suck at mobile browsing.
I used carbon on my note 2, i would definitely be interested.
We're cooking up some ridiculous new stuff. I think everyone is going to be VERY happy.
Carbon rom was probably the sexiest thing I ever ran on my bionic. I would donate a few bucks if it helped get us support for an S4.
by the way, the experimental halo releases tonight were not the interesting things i'm referring to...

I guess that's why they gave them out. "Can you guys make ROMs for us? We're too lazy."

Huawei is basically saying "you're on your own" to anyone who received a device as a devloper. That's not a great position... It's a pretty solid slap in the face. My first thought as a developer is "ok, they are out, why would I bother". I'd cut more slack if the device was 18-24 months old but they are pushing this as their flagship currently and an alternative to the more expensive phablets on the market. Even Samsung provides "reasonable" support for "old" flagships better than this.
The crazy thing is the hardware should be more than able to keep up with 4.4/5.0. Unless they are jumping right to 5.0 this move makes 0 sense to me.
Modding. Mymind and xordos with my continual softbrick testing have managed to port a pretty much fully working TWRP onto my MT2-L05 device and I have uploaded a decrypted 4.4.2 rom for my Mate 2 in this forum, so why don't we collectively try and port it to your device, any help you need that are within my skillset I will happily provide....just a thought.. .... Does Huawei use a tool like RSD or Odin for system images or are devs stuck with manual disk images and the like via recovery?
Hmm, I was thinking about getting one of these, now I'm having doubts. If we only
get third party firmware, would I still be able to run software which will not run with root access ?
Have any of those developers who received the free phones mentioned their intentions?

Right now I'd hold off. Buy something else. The operating system on this phone is already a year old. Support for things like Android wear etc will be questionable in 6 months.
If Huawei doesn't update it's phones you should go with something else. Just my opinion.

I saw the blog post on my G+ feed earlier today. I'm not really shocked, but it still really feels like a kick in the teeth.
I'm not sure what kind of luck we'll have getting a custom KK/LP Rom running on this phone. Usually the manufacturer-provided ROM is used as a baseline for other modifications to be made. If we were to spin our own AOSP Rom, could we even find the drivers and kennel modules to make everything work?
Where do we go from here?

The kernel is up on one of the hosted Huawei sites. A quick once over at the BABBQ indicated it's a fairly vanilla Qualcomm 3.4 kernel with some Huawei bits sprinkled in. Shouldn't be much of an issue for 4.4. getting a 3.10 kernel up for 5.0 will be trickier and is a big question mark as 5.0 isn't officially released just yet. At the BABBQ we also discovered they didn't implement all of the modem modes in the ROM. Another developer told me they might take a closer look but gave no detail for timing.
I've been tinkering with adb backups, titanium and xposed lately and I'm not liking the stock ROM much. They omitted large chunks of the adb backup stuff rendering apps like Helium useless, the SD cards don't come through to the root context properly forcing you to enable a compatibility flag in SuperSU in order to make titanium work and apktool and other standard tools choke nicely on the system apks. I had to fall back to running the smali decompiler by hand to find the right hooks in SystemUI for a simple xposed hack.
Adding to the fun their version of Settings.apk is missing a number of standard features which you can only adjust via Tasker/SecureSettings or by hand behind the scenes. They also didn't implement encrypted storage in the vold storage stuff so you're screwed in an enterprise setting.
Based on what I've seen thus far a source based build is almost necessary if you want everything android has to offer. However, vetting a ROM to ensure various new functionality is 100% will be a pain.
Huawei left out a lot and the lack of 4.4 is a serious kick in the teeth.
Horrible
I just purchased this phone from amazon on July. I wouldn't mind the no update but I want to get a google watch in the next few months so I'm not very happy about this announcement. For some odd reason, Amazon is still letting me return this phone so I'm thinking of returning the phone. What is another phone that I can get at this price range?

You can use Huawei's Hi-Suite software to flash roms to phone from pc. You can also pack roms up into Huawei's update format and flash them in quick update mode from your phone's external sd card, or you can install via recovery.
I bought mine on September 29 (didn't get it until early October) through the gethuawei site. I wonder if I can return it... I'll find out when there livechat is live today, the 29th of October.
After just one minor OTA update they officially announce no additional updates for their only US device... That's a deal breaker for me.
Damn, I was just about to buy this phone. Does anyone know of any good alternatives in Canada?

Not surprised , saw this coming from the early start . Thing is , there is no alternative with these features / size at the 299$ price tag . There are phones like the ZTE nubia / moto g / Blu products / etc but they don't hold a candle to this phablet . On another note , I've customized my phone to the max and i don't need a major OS update . Just me , this phone runs perfectly for my use . Fine if they just push minor OS fixes via OTA . Developers can be our saviours ! Let's not forget this isn't really a flagship ! You're paying for the experience as created/intended at the time . Let's wait and see

Nice to see someone pick up development. For my needs, stock JB4.3 works perfectly, but you have to figure, apps will eventually require
higher than 4.3 to operate, which means those with the HAM2 will be left out.

Good to see some time enthusiasm here. Too good if a phone to be passed up by cm. Even if it were just an aosp 4.3. It would be an improvement. Also willing to add to the monetary pool for the other effort.

Pretty much that. I didn't find any useful tutorial, so i had to just try it out and experiment with different commands. There are some linking issues with headers, that i had to make some modifications. On top of that, the ram disk, and device tree stuff had to be extract from original bootimg, I found a tool in here

But Yes, it should work on Stock. BUT YOu need to add Init.d Support if YOu want to use the given Scripts like Battery Calibration and Play Services battery drain Fix.
Another thing are the GApps. The LIGHT PATCH comes with Optimized GApps for 7.1. If You are on 7.1 YOu're good to go. If not, You should pre download a GApp Pack for Your Android Version to install it after the Patch. That should be all. And like always, do clean flashs! lol

I'm still playing around with some things. Ended up doing a complete clean flash of RR, Magisk 13, and this again this morning, so I haven't had too much time to just dive into everything just yet. Just tested sound over speakers though, and it sounds great. Still gotta see how battery fares.
If you opt to let the patch install Gapps, they're very minimal, and you'll end up installing most of them from the Play Store, but that gives you the option to keep whichever ones you want. There are also a ton of lib files, and some add-ons from Sony and HTC that are worth checking out. Will give a more detailed post after I've had more time to mess around.
I'm interested too.
A list with some information of the benefits would still be good.

Glad to hear it runs! Well, there are hundreds of Features and goodies in this Baby. I'm working on Android since almost 7 Years and the Patch is the Product of enhancing custom ROMs to something more than that. Calling it a Mod is like calling a Operation on a Brain slaughtering lol
I will try to explain it a bit.
The Light Patch is the 3rd Version of My Patch System. The Multi Device Support is caused by excluding the Device specific Firmware from the customization which i usually would do with a ROM. The advantages of that are independent OS updates, Multi Device Support, Features which You can't get with AOSP, and it is better to develop than usual Mods or ROMs.
We have planned to create a own AOSP OS and some Apps in the Future which will include the advanced research behind the Patch and everything what i do. It is really hard for Me to describe all that. But i'm going to enhance My Project together with a new Partner and the Light Patch is the first Step on that Way. There will come for sure more Infos, Videos and all possible Things over the Time. And don't run away cause of my English! My Partner speaks a lot better English than Me, so the overall Quality will come over the Time. I'll let him do all the Social stuff here so i can focus on the development (finally). The Main Team is growing and our Maintainers will also get a place in our Org. We will soon have a own Domain with G Suite Service and everything looks bright for our Project.
I hope that wasn't to much bad English for One Post  Just take a look on My very long Changelog and try the Patch. You will not regret it, it is 100% stable if You follow the given Instructions

I decided to try it out of curiosity, pretty much because I flash a lot, and try to stay open to new things. I'm a tinkerer, and I guess that's just part of my fidgety nature. Lol. But, as there's no official maintainer or posts in the development section for our device yet, and English isn't the developers first language, it seems that either flashing or waiting for response from people that have are the best way to get information for now. But if you download the zip and browse through it, there are a lot of things there that should theoretically add to the user experience.
Once galactic stryder started to collected crowd funding to buy a new le max 2 and then also ordered it and then it now arrived because of some issues. Anybody can tell me what happened to the money of yours you donated? And why he is not developing? Just curious to know that!
Heyyo, he posted a while back that he has had stuff going on in life so it was delayed a few months for software development.
Tbh even once he starts it could be a few months before he has a properly working x2 build as he uses his own kernels with some stuff based on Darkobas (Oreo) and I haven't seen anything happening there either... So really who knows when we shall see some AOSPA x2 stuff.
Such is the way with crowdfunding anyways. We funded a device for him and it will take time for things to get done. I know I donated a bunch too but hey I am barely making progress on Oreo but I try with my limited software development skills and time.
He wrote to me that let max 2 "will be supported on our AOSPA 8 from April"
Let's wait for the guy solve his issues. Nobody forced us to donate. I am sure that he didn't run away with the LeMax2  Any user should understand that developers are also people with jobs, family, etc. Heck, even to reply to xda Q&A takes time (thanks @ThE_MarD), so it's often to see that there's no answer from the dev to "why torch is not working" question or stuff like that.
Honestly speaking, even without him, the development of X2 is at a very good level by my standards.
I think we should also donate to infrag and all the others who worked really hard to fix the builds for this device.
Thanks to all for info
Let me undersrand it correctly. You bought new phone for some guy in hope he will develop rom, but no news from him, he ran away with new phone. Well there's a sucker born every minute.

Forgive me, but it's a sad statement.
Actually, a passionate and skilled guy who did a good job with a very similar phone, offered to work on improving support for this device. I can't event think he needed another underpriced (because of lack of official support from manufacturer, bankrupt) smartphone

He is very active kernel dev for Le pro 3, so it wasnt like, hey lets give new phone to random guy.
Hi, sorry for the delay, the phone has reached my door only yesterday, 5 months waiting - or even more - it's good that I have time now to develop and the phone, I just didn't get to XDA those last months so I get the hesitation of all the users when I was off and without the phone; time's passed and as you can see on my Github we have started moving again, wrote all my Kernel script to support the new device on both versions - one Kernel fits all, right? (my LG G2 users should remember that one) - as I'm planning to support stock M versions and the upcoming, if ever coming, N versions of EUI.
The stock Kernel code is a mess just like the one from Pro3 - what did I expect? - so I may time until Saturday to get the vanilla CAF one up and running stable. After that I'll set up my Ryzen machine with another distro, probably BBQ, to compile a more recent version of N or O.
I have just updated to the latest Chinese ROM (X821) to compare the Kernel messages and take some information to merge with my previous work, I'll open a DEVB thread as soon as I get something stable running for EUI users.
Hope that clears out any misunderstandings...
