Hey! So in short I've managed to software brick my a20e.
As soon as you turn it on it goes to "an error has occurred while updating the device software use emergency recovery function in the smart switch pc software" but the device is not recognised.
So I did the logical thing of going to Odin, downloaded stock ROM anddd.. doesn't let me boot to download mode. I'm stuck on "an error occurred" screen.
Any ideas on a fix for this?
You can either drain the battery by just letting it boot loop/error screen then give it a little charge and see if it goes into download mode. Or see if it will go into recovery mode that would not require a PC USB connection.

Recovery is gone and tried bootlooping until it died still unable to get to download load which has completely stumped me.

K the fact Recovery is gone is kinda bad but the last time I bricked a phone it took me a while to get it into DL mode due to the button combo and make sure it has a couple of % of charge so if you get it stuck again you can boot loop it dry and try again. Also, consider if still possible to install TWRP and a custom ROM TWRP is more reliable in humble opinion for recovery.

As soon as I plug in a charger it turns straight on to the error, power+ vol up+down just reboots the phone back to error can't get to download mode at all.
I checked the combo is turn on then hold volume up + volume down + insert USB. I use this tool so I do not charge the phone: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32977246421.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.6dd94c4dMbXeKj
And the combo can be found here: https://www.hardreset.info/devices/samsung/samsung-galaxy-a20e/download-mode/

Well, after spending almost 11 hours trying to boot into recovery or download, I know for sure that there is something going on with my phone re: hardware locked. The date on my box is 7-16. It is an early Vibrant. But no matter what I do, I cannot get into download or recovery which means my ****ing phone is literally worthless.
I have tried all possible thousands of combination's of buttons, batteries, and cords while booting and nothing happens.
The Vibrant logo shows, then it shows the pink, annoying as hell T-mobile logo, than goes to the Galaxy S logo which loads for a little bit and then just leads me to a black screen. Eventually the 4 buttons on the front of the phone turn on and then nothing else happens. It will just sit like this forever.
I know all I need to do is get a working ROM loaded but it is literally impossible to do so.
Can anyone offer any suggestions? Or are anyone else having the same problem?
I guess the only way I can get a working phone is to get in touch with T-mobile and do a Warranty exchange. That's a damn shame too, because I will be without a working phone for a week.
What about using adb?
adb reboot recovery -or- adb reboot download ?
I had a hw locked vibrant, never tried the adb reboot download, recovery did work.. I added another line on my account last night for somone, who got a vibrant, theirs wasn't hw locked, so I traded 'em ;P
Agree with the above poster I have been stuck on the vibrant screen or dark screen and adb still worked to save me
when i try to use adb, it just tells me that it cant find the device. i'm not able to boot into android OS at all.... screen just hangs. so my computer is never getting a chance to see my phone hence why i cant use adb to reboot it into recovery or download.
I believe your device has to go into recovery mode then check with and devices and if you see a device I THINK it is and reboot download, I am 90% certain

have you installed the drivers? phone DOES NOT have to boot into android for adb to read it.

i do believe i have the correct drivers installed. i was able to use adb to run lagfixes before i was having this problem. when i boot my phone, i get a sound from my computer saying that it recognizes a usb device. the two drives in the vibrant show up in My Computer but i cannot access them as windows says they are not accessable at the moment.
at what point will adb be able to recognize my phone when booting? no matter what i do when i try adb shell i get error: device not found
It could be the phone not bring in debugging mode, either because it's been turned off or the os isn't getting far enough to turn it on. I think I've been able to get adb to recognize my phone even while it was booting up (at the white vibrant screen). Maybe you can try adb then?
Same problem here. I probably just have to sell it fast on ebay or something. Hopefully some kind of fix starts by the end of the week. First phone in my smartphone life to brick from a simple Voodoo lag fix. Please XDA gods find a solution.

nope, no go. adb will not recognize my device no matter what. and the device isnt loading the OS so i cannot turn debugging on. i guess this is a real "brick" then.

this isnt working either. :-(
I just fixed this on my phone. Your phone will go into download mode. Plug the phone in and wait for the battery symbol to fully load. Hold Vol + and _ and PWR until it goes black, then release the PWR button only. It will go into DL mode. Fire up Odin, and flash the "Froyo that does not brick" ROM. It will boot into the i9000 recovery mode and give you an error. Hold the Vol + and - and PWR again and release PWR when the phone goes black. It will go into DL mode again. Now with Odin, flash the factory firmware, making sure to click re-partition this time. After the phone reboots, it will fire right up into the factory ROM.

this is exactly the method i want to try. but unfortunately i cannot get the phone into recovery or download mode. i have tried at least 100 times now with many different combination's of plugging the usb cord in and pressing the volume and power buttons.
two ideas: one, is it possible that i wiped recovery and download mode from my phone on accident? the reason why i ask is that i was super tired and flashing roms and kernels to my phone. i flashed back to my original stock rom and then i flashed the kernel. for some reason, i selected wipe date/cache in Rom Manager before flashing the kernel. i have no idea why i did this. seriously. totally noob move. so im assuming i have a kernel flashed but now there is no ROM installed for the phone to boot into.
two, if above is not the issue, than im going to assume that the phone is not recognizing any button presses while its off, so when i turn it on it just recognizes that the power was pressed and ignores the volume presses, thus not booting the phone into recovery or download.
edit: i should mention again that at no time does adb recognize my device. so i cannot use adb to reboot the phone into the mode i need.
just a comment for the OP - the vibrant isnt worthless, it is something that YOU did to get the phone into its current state. So dont blame the phone for something that it didnt do on its own.

I understand what you mean. I appreciate your criticism of my original post. Let me say that I wrote it while frustrated. But I know that isn't an excuse.
The device is fantastic. I know that I did this to it myself. It's unfortunate.
Anyways, I received a replacement phone. I will be more careful this time.
I was using this topic to try to fix my phone from an earlier issue
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432
I accidentally flashed a CM9 from the i19100 instead of the i777, and when I tried to flash the Siyeah kernal, the phone stopped working. I used the topic I mentioned above and tried to use Odin to flash back to fix it, and now the phone just loops in the AT&T logo if it's not plugged in to the USB, and just flashes the batter icon at me if it is plugged while I try to enter download mode.
I cannot find a solution for this. I tried the Vol Up+Down+Power, which didn't work, and since I can't get it to turn on, nothing else will work. I have no idea how to proceed.
EDIT: Fixed by getting into download mode by holding Vol Down + Power, instead of the three button trick. Might come in handy for others. I had the boot loop on the AT&T splash screen that seems to require a jig most of the time.

Cant enter download mode while USB is plugged in.
try Vol up, Vol down. Insert USB.
And if that works, next time, try searching more.
Flashing a CM9 from i9100 will not brick your phone, hell it should boot still. but get d/l mode and back to a i777 kernal, then recovery, and flash ROM. i777 ROM

It booted, but was giving me a Status 7 error when I tried to flash a nightly (because I didn't realize I had flashed a i9100 rom at the time, figured that out after some searching) so I decided to just use Odin to flash back stock.
And, no luck on the Vol Up+Down then plugging in. Tried with battery and without. With batter, just shows the charged batter screen like it did before. Without battery it just flashes the grey battery icon over and over.
I had a similar issue. to get to download mode use Vol up+down+power with the USB cable plugged in. make sure you hold them down until the download mode appears.

Been trying that for hours. Definitely not getting to download mode that way.
Odin still recognizes my phone when I turn it on. If I unplug it, turn it on, then plug it back in, Odin will recognize the phone, though I can't actually enter download mode.

Do you have recovery? do a factory reset inside recovery?
But you got bigger problem if you cant get into download mode. you sure your doing it right? sorry have to ask.
Vol up Vol down, hold both those while inserting USB, hold untill screen pops up.
Or a Jig.
No, no recovery. Splash screen and batter screen. Those are the only things I get to see.
I looked at the jig, but I don't have the supplies to make it off hand (no soldering iron), and no one I could find seemed to have as many problems with this as I was. Most of them just couldn't get into download mode and weren't having looping issues.

Yeah, I guess there's no other solutions. I thought maybe there was just something I couldn't find. I ordered a jig from amazon with overnight shipping. Hopefully it will work.
Try the following;
USB cable plugged into phone and motherboard battery out. Hold volume +/-. Insert battery. Continue holding volume +/- until you either get the battery charging animation or download mode.
If that doesn't get you download mode nothing short of a jig or jtag will..
Goodluck!

Yeah, I reflashed stock + root, then flashed a kernal with CWM, then flashed CM9, then Siyah. Now I'm back to where I was, finally.
It turned out that in the beginning, when I was having the bad boot loop problem, I could get into download mode by holding Vol Down + Power, which wasn't mentioned anywhere that I could find. I just did it for kicks while the internet wasn't work and while I was turning my phone on and off.
Anywho, after much work and me learning to use Heimdall, the phone is working. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!
I recently bought a rooted Galaxy S3 from a friend. The problem is I can't get into download mode or CWM recovery.
I tried installing CWM recovery using ROM manager (v5) but I got an error saying: "GT-9300 does not have an officiall supported CWM recovery yet.
The phone is on android version 4.1.1 at this moment.
Could you help me installing recovery?

No download mode then you have a faulty phone and require a service centre repair .

You could try a usb jig to force into download mode. They're a couple of dollars / pounds whatever.
There's also a thread in general to find who could lend you one nearby

That seems a smart question I'm new to Samsung.
Download: Volume down, power on button and front button (home button) pushed in at the same time whilst the device is off to get into download. Result: I see the screen go on (screen is black but there's backlight) and after a couple of seconds it just boots the normal android system.
Recovery is volume up, power and home at the same time when the device is turned off. Same here, I see a response e.g. the backlight goes on but after a few seconds the phone boots up normally.
The booting proces takes longer than it normally does when just turning the device on. I think the software installed is causing this (the hardware seems to respond but it's like the software just ignores the input)

In my country no one seems to know such a usb jig but I already found a place where I can order them
I just have to stick the thing in and wait for it to engage download mode before I plug in my normal data cable right?

Well I was undervolting and underclocking my i9100 for a few months and it would suffer from freezes and stuff like that nothing much as I would be able to perform a hard reset and reboot with my phone completely working everytime that happens. However today, I just locked my phone after taking a picture and I could not unlock it after that. I pressed the power button and home button but the screen would not turn on. So i just took out the battery and tried booting the phone. It was stuck in a bootloop where the boot animation would just keep on playing. So i force shutdown it and booted it into recovery. I had CWM 6.0.4.6 installed and when i booted into recovery, it gave me the message it cannot mount something and cannot load last kmsg and blah. I took no notice and tried to format cache. During this point, the recovery hanged and i force shutdown my phone again. After which, I could never turn on my phone again. No splash screen no nothing. I think it is bricked. And yea btw my usb port is not working anymore and it can only be used for charging. And i was running cm11 infected. Can you all please help me thanks!

Try this - take out battery, then press and hold volume down+home+power and put battery back without releasing buttons. This may get you into a download mode where you can flash stock jb via odin.
I have a Sprint Galaxy Note 3 that is stuck in a bootloop.
Whenever a battery is in, the phone starts up and reboots a couple seconds later, no matter what boot mode it is in. I can't get in to download mode or recovery because of this. Tried a different battery and that didn't solve the problem.

It restarts a couple seconds after booting no matter what mode I put it in, rather that be download, recovery, or normal boot. Does it as soon as the battery is inserted. Could the physical power button have some sort of problem?
if you have an external sd card, remove it. then try; they're notorious for causing weird issues.
I've also read in the past where people take out the battery for a day or so and it cures strange ailments as well.
Other than that, it sounds like a hardware malfunction. Download mode for sure should be stable as that can't be replaced b flashing or odin; sans perhaps loading the wrong device's OS.
