HTC Evo 3D not connecting to Virgin Mobile network to activate. - HTC EVO 3D

I have an HTC Evo 3D phone. It is for Virgin Mobile. I had it attached to my phone number last year and it worked fine. I upgraded my phone and just had the HTC laying around. My son accidentally broke his phone and I gave the HTC to him. I activated it online and everything went fine. I turned on the HTC and it would not connect. It tries to activate but it is not connecting to the Virgin Mobile network. I have network on and WiFi off. I have tried it with WiFi on and neither is working. I tried resetting the phone. I tried factory resetting and taking the battery out. I tried updating Profile and PRN - not connecting to the Virgin Mobile network.
Have made a total of 4 calls to Virgin Mobile.
Call #1
Your phone is too old and it wont connect to our towers. Get a new phone.
Call #2
Use ##VIRGIN# - that doesnt work? Oh well get a new phone.
Call#3
Needs to be programmed - This one actually tried a few things before he told me I had to go to a Sprint store to get the MSL code so that I could program the MSID and MDN into the phone manually.
Call #4
Retrieved the MSL code *By the way - virgin mobile phones need to be on the virgin mobile network for over 10 months for them to give out the MSL code.
Tried ##(mslcode)# - did not enter into the edit mode - did nothing.
At this point he stated that I needed to upgrade my phone.
Tried ##3282# - was able to edit MSID # but not the MDN number (which is the phone number).
So my questions are - why is it not connecting to the network?
How to change the MDN number?
Anything else? Please?

HAHA!
since the log gave the the expiration date of the stale CA certificate, I turned off automatic time/date and set the date to April 29, 2019, right before the cert expired.... and the profile update ran and completed.
same for the PRL update, but the profile update corrected the time and I had to go back and "fix" it again to run the PRL update.
I'll have to try the date reversion gimmick on the Optimus V for fun later.
Just a heads-up, most HTTPS is going to have issues from the stale certificates. If you figure out which ones have gone south (settings>security>trusted credentials) you might be able to import new ones (settings>security>install from SD card)
but I have yet to find a current version of the Sprint branded CA cert anywhere, and somewhere around a third of the certs installed on the 3vo are expired.
Maybe good ones could be pulled from a newer ROM on some up-to-date Sprint HTC device. Since I'm not worried about using the stock rom on my 3vo I will likely not go to the trouble of fishing for current CA certs.
If it works for anyone else, great. I'm going to harass Sprint mercilessly about this one.
If it wasn't such a fight to get to tier 2 (or higher) tech support even WITH a sprint account, maybe I'd have been able to talk to someone who had a clue. Virgin tech support is no better... I feel I know that pretty well, considering that over the years since 2007 I have been such a ridiculous pain in the behind to both companies with overly deep technical issues that I once had direct phone numbers for tier 3 Sprint and tier 2 Virgin support, which they have of course since disconnected.
original reply follows:
I know this is stale, but, for anyone interested:
to edit MDN/MSID on a Sprint 3vo
##(your six digit MSL/SPC number)# in the dialer
this was on a fully updated sprint 3vo, on ICS.
it's weird yours wouldn't edit. will it view the numbers in that menu? You can also see them without editing in ##RTN# and ##SCRTN# menus, they both require the MSL to access.
##VIRGIN# was the way to edit MDN and MSID on my Virgin Optimus V. I'll have to burn a Virgin 3vo back to stock to verify if it's the same. Will do that at some point.
Since my most recent $7 3vo is a used sprint phone and I have no sprint account, sprint flat refused to give me the MSL, and I had to root the phone and use MSL reader from play store to get it. Even finding stale crusty downloads of everything I needed, it was still faster rooting and getting the MSL myself than all the time I wasted with Sprint between phone calls and the corporate store today.
f*** sprint.
the 3vo activation apps, including both virgin and the sprint one and the buried pieces of them in settings>system updates, are now broken due to expired root CA certificates, as far as I can tell from the system logs.
E/vDM ( 7403): VdmRawConnection#open: IOException: com.android.org.bouncycastle.jce.exception.ExtCertPathValidatorException: Could not validate certificate: current time: Sun Aug 23 22:48:30 CDT 2020, expiration time: Tue Apr 30 13:24:45 CDT 2019
I managed to get voice/text working on Hello Mobile (sprint MVNO) by setting the MDN(phone number) and MSID (looks like a phone number but is different than the actual phone number(MDN.))
But I have no data service whatsoever, and have not yet puzzled out why. It is still day 1 of hacking at this phone again, I guess.
It was like pulling teeth and took around a half hour to explain roughly what the MSID is and why it was needed to the tier 1 hello mobile rep before they eventually went through a manager or two and coughed up the information. I actually got that for testing a Virgin Mobile LG Optimus V.... again, voice/text/no data. Rather than fight through another call with them I reverted the V to aphrodite (stock mod) to get the MSID from ##RTN# menu to force it into the 3vo.
the activation tool does connect to data during its failed run, you can see it in logcat, but I haven't found a working APN for hello mobile yet or any other info to get data up and running.
//end of the beginning
Perhaps I'll post a "guide" of sorts later. But, I'm pretty lazy, and people don't usually like my crowded overly verbose text formatting anyway.

So to update my last post...
I dug up my Virgin 3vo, put it on my hello mobile account which works with my Sprint 3vo, and the VM version refuses to activate, even with the time/date set to 2018 before the SSL certs expired.
As far as I can tell from the logs, activation on the Virgin model is trying to run over 1xRTT (2G towers.) Those, as far as I know, have been obsoleted on Sprint service and will no longer connect.
The exact same thing happens on my Virgin Mobile LG Optimus V.
The Sprint 3vo has newer firmware than HTC ever released for the Virgin model, and runs activation over the 3G towers, which works.
I'm sorry to say that the older Virgin Mobile devices look to be dead ducks for activating data service unless they were already activated on a specific account.
My somewhat newer Virgin HTC Desire 816 (A5) also refuses to provision services with a different error, but it has hardware issues with the SIM slot which may be preventing activation from running properly.
You can still use ##(your MSL code)# to program the MDN/MSID manually for voice/sms service, but for data, I have never gone deep enough into debugging to see how the stock ROM obtains the new profile information and sets it in the NVRAM. It'd require some serious reverse engineering to figure that out.

Alltel to Verizon Switch. alltel touch pro will not work on vzw?!

I recently bought an Alltel Touch Pro from alltel.com for CHEAP. Now the merger with Verizon and the peeps in the vzw store and on the 800# said my phone in not compatible and told me to buy another one.
I need new phones for the other lines on the plan but not willing to pay $350 for another Touch Pro when i already have the same phone.
I unlocked my Touch Pro and am running NFSFAN's rom (presumably compatible for any carrier). WHAT GIVES!
Please Help!
Are there any options beside Sprint or start all over and go AT&T (which i dont want to do)
if you're interested
I do have a vzw touch pro for trade if you want...I'd like to take that alltel touch pro
that's one other option
PM me or let's chat on msn a bit or whichever IM client you have
RE: Phone Trade
Thanks man but my point is, I dont want to get rid of the phone, I just want it to work!
Any one else have this problem?
The alltel phone should work they are lying to you. I have a sprint phone and it works. Did you try to set up all the epst settings first? You have to update the MSID, MDN, and something else but i cant remember right now. If you do a search you will be able to find it. Then flash update the pri, that way you dont get that annoying roaming triangle. After that just get them to add the ESN to there network and it will work.
Start at step 2 and then skip to step 9 and continue.
Getting your sprint phone on a vzw network
What you will need
you will need
* QPST (google this - seriously, because chances of you finding it here are slim)
* Baffles MSL Grabber (you can find it here: http://www.baf.cc/bafmsl you will need .net framework 3.5 installed on your phone)
* An unlocked Sprint Touch Pro (Raphael Unlocker here http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=42503)
* VZW leaked rom (that you can find here : ftp://ppcgeeks.com/Raphael/Stock R...51064_Ship.exe)
* The most current vzw PRL (Again you can find that here : http://www.corolada.com/prl/verizon/51056.prl)
* DMU Keys (Find that here : http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/attachment...2&d=1205773368)
* HTC modem drivers http://www.cinconet.org/gpsfix/WMode...rInstaller.exe
Step One
You can perform this step on your phone. Install Baffles MSL Grabber and write your MSL. My suggestion is to open up a text document and type it there because it will be necessary later on.
Step Two
Unlock your device using the Raphael team elite unlocker for sprint. I used the second link (I believe .37).
Step Three
Install the htc modem drivers on your computer (that's kind of important)
Step Four
Install QPST on your computer
Step Five
If you completed all the preliminary steps, you should be ready to fully begin. At this point, you can perform the steps on the vzw leaked rom or on your sprint touch pro rom. If you are performing this on the sprint touch pro rom, you will need DCD carriers cab. On the vzw rom, however, I have noted that MMS does work on the phone (and you know how much we love our mms). I think this is solely up to you whether or not you use either rom for operation. Remember though, if you are doing this on a sprint rom
DMR mode for sprint is
##3424#
Whereas DMR for vzw is
##3424 and press the send key (send key is below the home hardware button - you can also use the send key on the phone)
Also EPST for sprint is
##778#
whereas this for a vzw phone is
##778 and hit the send key
So how you will work is solely up to you
What you would need to do next is place your phone in DMR mode. Connect your phone to your computer via usb mode. If everything worked okay, the popup for drivers shouldn't come up at all. Start QPST config and select ports
Step Six
Now, in QPST, your phone should come up. If it doesn't, right click on my computer and select properties. Click hardware and then device manager. Click view and device by connection. Click on your USB controllers and don't stop until you see HTC. Notice the com port that the HTC device is on (mine on two different computers, running xp or vista was COM5, yours may be different). Take a note of this and return to QPST config. Now, click add COM port, and add the port you saw in the device manager. QPST will pick up the phone.
Step Seven
Now, click on services and go to services programming. Select your phone and begin. This will ask for your MSL. Type it in and continue. Click read from phone. You may have to retype that MSL code, if not good. but on some cases, it asked me for my MSL code twice (unfortunately) so I typed it in twice. The point of it all is this - to get the data from your phone to QPST
Step Eight - changing your MSL
Now that you are in QPST Service programming, you can change your MSL unlock code. Please change it to 000000. That is vzw's MSL code, and it is so easy to remember for later on. Once this is done, click write to phone. I caution, do not close out of QPST service programming until this is done! You will know when this is done if you can see that the buttons read from phone, write to phone, are not grayed out.
Step Nine (optional)
Okay so at this point, I installed the leaked vzw rom but it is not necessary to perform this step at all. Its just something I did to make things a lot easier on me. Individual results can vary though.
Step Ten
Now, its time to change our MIP settings. Go into EPST and select your MIP profile. On your phone you can edit the information to match the following:
MIP Profile
Number of profiles: 6
Active user profile index: 0
MIP_MODE: Mobile IP Prefered
MIP Reg Retries: 2
MIP Reg Retry: 1750 ms
MIP Pre-Reg Timeout: 0
Mobile Node-HA: Enable
Send A Reg: Disable
Dormant Handoff Opt: Enable
Step Eleven
Now in EPST, go to MIP default profile and edit the information on your phone to match these settings:
MIP Default Profile
Enable Profile: Enable
NAI: [email protected] ([email protected])
DUN NAI: (if entry is there enter [email protected] so you can tether without a tethering package or [email protected] if you want paid tethering))
MN HA SPI Set: Enable
MN HA SPI Value: 12C
MN AAA SPI Set: Enable
MN AAA SPI Value: 0 (requires a "2" here for 6800 and 6900)
Reverse Tunneling: Enable
Home Address: 0.0.0.0
HA Shared Secret: (erase whatever entry is here leave blank)
AAA Shared Secret: (erase whatever entry is here leave blank)
Primary HA Address: 255.255.255.255
Secondary HA Address: 255.255.255.255
DMU Pub Key: 10
MN Authenticator: 0
It is very important to erase the HA and AAA shared keys. We will return back to them momentarily
Step Eleven
Complete changes from EPST and the device will soft reset. Now place your phone in diag mode. Connect your phone to your computer and enter QPST EFS explorer. Unzip the DMU keys and notice you will see the file on your hard drive. In EFS explorer, you will see the DMU folder. Right click on the folder and you will be able to insert a DMU key via the file explorer on your computer. Select the DMU key file and press okay. The information will be written to the phone.
Step Twelve
Drag your PRL file you downloaded from your computer to your cell phone memory. Dial ##PRL and hit send if you are on vzw rom, if not ##PRL# if you are still on the sprint rom. This will lead to a dialog box on your phone that will allow you to locate the PRL file you loaded onto your phone. Make sure the PRL is in a directory where you can access it when you browse for it on your phone.
Step Thirteen
Place your phone back in diag mode. Connect to QPST service programming and go to the MIP default profile (AAA shared secret and HA shared secret is where you need to go in Service programming). If there is anything in those two areas, delete it, click enter hex values and leave it blank. Write to phone.
Step Fourteen
If you are still on a sprint phone, install DCD vzw carrier cab. If not, please dial *228. The menu has changed, so you will have to hear EVERY option before selecting. You will enter option number 3. Go through the prompts on vzw's end and the phone will program and soft reset.
Step Fifteen
Once your phone has soft reset, you're almost done! You should have text messaging and voice, but data not yet. So to get data, you have some options. If you can't get data to authenticate, follow step thirteen. Then force the phone into 1x mode (I don't care how you do it - what I did was go to a mall basement) and connect to the internet in 1x mode. EvDO won't work, but 1x does work. What is going to happen is the HA and AAA shared keys will be written. If all goes well, you should have your sprint touch pro phone 99.9% working on vzw network.
Now, the roaming triangle will stay there, I'm still working on how to remove that. But it will work everyday. Enjoy your new phone =)
Special thanks to Nex, Baffles, drellisdee, and KilgoreBA for the help. I haven't started my hand at a vzw rom, but I will eventually...
Any questions?

people have got their Alltel TP on the VZW network without having to go through the abouve steps
Solution! (I think)
Thanks for the posts. So, from what I gather all I need to do is spend an entire day on the phone to speak to someone with the authority and the will to add my esn to the database.
Now thats quality guest service!
if you quote the CSA to them after they said it can't be done then it shouldn't take all day. I would look at it as you just made them do something that they said they won't do, and at least you don't have to buy their crappy version of the phone. just one more way of sticking it to them.
I work at Verizon and I've seen this problem numerous times since the merger. Here's how it works:
Legacy Alltel customers will remain on their Alltel plans until they decide to switch over to a Verizon plan. Even when your Alltel plan is up for renewal, you can still renew it and remain on your Alltel plan. So in all honesty, the only thing that's Verizon about legacy Alltel customers is the letterhead on your most recent bill.
Another note, Verizon phones work on Alltel plans but Alltel phones will not work on Verizon plans. Even now, legacy Alltel customers that have made the switch over to Verizon plans and phones are having trouble with their service. We CSR's aren't sure why but it's happening. If it were a smartphone on an Alltel plan then it's your Alltel's plan and VZW's add on. This goes for all addons: texting, data, smartphone plans, etc. So if you wanted a Storm and wanted to keep your Alltel plan, we would add VZW's smartphone plan on top of your Alltel plan.
So to answer your question to the best of MY knowledge, as long as you're still on an Alltel plan with your Alltel TP, you should be fine, but if you're on a VZW plan with your Alltel phone, it won't work.. at least that's what I've been told through training.

so you are saying that everyone on verizon wireless can drop their service without a termination fee because the CSA clearly states that customers can use any CDMA phone on the network as long as it is compatible. here is a quote from the CSA
"Your wireless phone is any device you use to receive our wireless voice or data service. It must comply with Federal Communications Commission regulations and be compatible with our network and your Plan. Whether you buy your wireless phone from us or someone else is entirely your choice. At times we may change your wireless phone's software, applications or programming remotely and without notice. This could affect data you've stored on, the way you've programmed or the way you use your wireless phone. If you purchased a wireless phone (other than a "global phone") from Verizon Wireless for use with a plan with a minimum term and want to reprogram your phone for use with another wireless carrier network, the default service programming code is set to "000000" or "123456." Verizon Wireless in no way guarantees that your Verizon Wireless phone will be capable of being reprogrammed for use with another wireless carrier network after the service programming code is entered, or that another wireless carrier will accept your device for use on its network"
people here had the same problem but got verizon to add the phone http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=75164&page=2
It DOES Work!
Whoever said that it doesnt isnt telling you the truth. I have an Alltel Touch Pro and when Verizon bought alltel, I didnt have to do anything to my phone to have it work on Verizon. The only phones that dont work are a few very old phones on alltel because their technology is old
I agree it does work
I also had have a TP that was with Alltel and when the migration to VZW was completed it still worked. Now, what does suck, the PRL I have for VZW using my Alltel phone is different from the PRL that a VZW phone is using. I was informed this is due to my Alltel rate plan. All I can tell you is my signal bar in some areas where I had great service now is sub-par with signal strength.
The other thing I did was go ahead and flash my TP to NFSFANs ROM build, and it is a world of difference.
From what I've read, folks with Alltel TP's on Alltel Plans are being transferred almost seamlessly to the Verizon network. However, what I'm planning on doing is purchasing an Alltel TP to put on my existing VZW plan. After I flash the ROM to a VZW compatible one, does anyone know if I'll be able to just activate and go on my merry way or will I run into problems where I have to call up VZW customer support and get them to add my new ESN to their database?
Hate to say it...
I've had zero luck getting an Alltel Touch Pro activated with Verizon, post programming ala the old Sprint to Verizon guide. I hope you have better luck!

SUCCESS... well almost...
I've received my Alltel TP yesterday and followed the tutorial at ppcgeeks (the one that shows you how to convert a Sprint TP to VZW). I then proceeded to talk to VZW Customer Service and they told me it was incompatible as I expected even after quoting them the CSA. I asked them to transfer my to tech support. I mentioned to them the trouble I was having and that I had read that it could be as simple as submitting a form to add the phone to the VZW database and asked it that was true. He confirmed that it was true, however, it would take 2-3 business days to complete the process after we submitted the form. So that's where I'm at now, waiting in anticipation! I set up an appointment for him to call me back this Wednesday to help me activate the phone. I will post back then to let you guys in on the rest of the story!
My advice thus far, save yourself the aggravation and skip CS and ask to be transferred to tech support. They are much nicer and more helpful over there about this subject.
what is the update here?
Interested in seeing a reply for this as well.
I currently have an Alltel TP and have sort of the same predicament. One of my lines is eligible for upgrade and wants to get a Droid. I have been told I could upgrade all phones and swap to a VZW plan, but would end up paying about 40$ more because of their DATA add on.
Fortunately I am on an Alltel plan and you can add Verizon smartphones to the alltel plan and only a couple of codes will change, but you stay on your plan - no cost difference.
But if I were to switch to a VZW plan or if you were on a VZW plan, you would lose your TP because of incompatibility which I know i'm not ready to throw out yet.
Update date Radio and PRL
Update the touch pro Radio to the Verizon 1.03.09v
Update the PRL, dial *228, then 2
periodically I also do a program update, *228, then 1
just in case they changed something.

[Q] Activating Optimus V on Sprint's network

Hi,
I'm a long-time lurker, this is my first post. I've searched and searched for this topic, but I dont think that it's something many people are trying to do. I hope I'm posting into the right forum. I'm pretty new to any sort of Android development, so I apologize in advance for any
I have a Virgin Optimus V that I have moved over to Sprint.
The phone has been activated on Sprint and I'm capable of making phone calls and SMS, but I can't get the device to connect to Sprint's 3G data.
I figured that by installing a Sprint ROM, I would get the Sprint modem.bin and be able to "Update Profile" to provision the phone to Sprint and get data working.
no such luck. I have flashed over to the Thunder rom for Optimus S and I'm in the same place. I can call and text, but still no Data. When I try and "Update Profile" it fails and immediately restarts the device.
Any ideas as to what is left on the device that would prevent it from connecting to Sprint data?
Bump... I would also like to know the answer to this since I've been thinking of doing this as well. How were you able to get the phone on Sprint's network in the first place?
I'm operating on an MVNO Wholesale network. If I were trying to activate this device on the normal Sprint network, I could understand the problem, as you can't switch ESNs back and forth. Given my scenario, I really can't understand what could possibly be limiting me from doing this. . .
Since my OP, I've flashed the Sprint PRL to the phone with qpst. I'm running ThundeROM V1.8. I turn on Airplane Mode, then turn it off and I see the 3G data icon for just a minute and then it disappears. When I try to update the Profile now, it trys and trys and eventually times out. . . but it no longer restarts the device after failing.
I'm also prompted to install system updates. . . which seems to indicate some kind of data connection is active?
I've been trying to change the APN settings through ##DATA#, but after I make a change to the Data Profile Username (from the @mdata.vombl.com to @sprintpcs.com) the phone restarts and the OLD values are still in the phone?
I'm thinking that the ##DATA# settings are incorrect? But how can I get the changes I make to "Stick" ? Since all of these settings were reset the last time I wiped the phone, I'd imagine that the AAA Password will also need to be set?
I was under the impression that the AAA Password (and most of the ##DATA# settings would configure themselves once I program in the MSID and MDN?)
Any help or shoves in the right direction would be appreciated.
I wish I was more knowledgeable in this area to be able to help...
Sorry! I didn't mean to dismiss your issue if this is what you're trying to do, I'm interested in this also. . . but I think Sprint keeps Virgin ESN's distinctly seperate from Sprint ESN's, the classic problem with a lot of other devices people would love to use on Sprint. I just lost my personal Sprint phone and I need a new one, it would be great if I could flash this V over to it.
I'm pretty new to this stuff too . . . I think that someone with more knowledge could likely help both of us =)
Any update? I was think about doing the same thing.
Bump
I really doubt you can get Sprint to provision the phone because I'm sure they would want to keep the meids/esns separate.
I have the same issue but have repaired my ESN. I have tried copying the actual NV items directly to the memory locations but on reboot the Virgin info repopulates. I posted in the the general section before I found this thread. I got no response in my thread yet. If mods want to move my thread into this one, I am fine with that.
If I find out anymore info, I will post in here.
I'm sure you're having an issue with the AAA and HA passwords for 3G. Unlike other phones, the Optimus V is not well-mapped (yet) for this info. A lot of people are having 3G issues when the phone updates, say from 2.1 to 2.2. VM customer support is terrible, they usually say to just pull the battery. Apparently the AAA and HA do not come back under these circumstances. If there was a way to find the HA and AAA PW like you can for others, people could fix this problem themselves.
Sorry this is no help, but I think that is the specific problem you're having based on your OP.

Will I have to unroot??

So i finally decided today that i will keep my tuhunderbolt with verizon and drop sprint and my epic. I called verizon and got the porting process started to bring my sprint number over to my TB. The guy told me in about 4 hours to try dialing *228 and chose option one. Its been 5 hours now and whenever i try dialing *228 and hit call it connects for about 1 second then disconnects. I dont know if this is normal if the porting process isnt finished yet or if this is because my TB is rooted with BAMF 1.3 installed and im unable to do service programming. So will i have to unroot, do the *228 thing, then reroot?

you dont have to do *228 ever on a 4g device. it auto programs on boot
aslong as you got your number set up and verizon knows your sim number (18 or 19 digit number, something like that, dont feel like ripping mine out to verify). Just place the sim in your device and fire it up, as soon the phone powers up it should auto activate. You will know it is activated when you see a 3g or 4g system above the signal meter.. if it's still on 1x, try making a test call to voice mail (*86) and if that works and you hang up, hopefully your data will come around.
I would also call from a landline and see if prompts you that the user's voicemail is not setup etc... that will let you know if the number ported off yet etc. /edit
And if you are powered up, have 1x and make a test call and your line/sim is activated. **It can take up to 15 mins for your data connection to be active, so if your test calls work and you have no data, just wait a few minutes and it will come around.** /edit2

Thanks! Ill try rebooting my phone and see if that fixes it
magneticzero is exactly right. On a 4G phone the old *228 doesnt work. You might want to try rebooting the phone every so often and that should get your old number to pop-up.
I ported my number over to my thunderbolt while running a custom rom. I called gave them all my information. Was told that an email was suppose to be sent to me so that I can authorize the port. 45 minutes later I hadn't received an email so I called and was allowed to authorize it over the automated system which the call rep was on the line too. 5 minutes later a text was sent to my phone advising me that my number had been successfully ported. Had I just done the automated authorization the port process might have only taken about 10-15 minutes. I was never told to dial *228.
Just rebooted my TB and still dont have my old number yet :/ ill give it some more time, im just glad i dont have to unroot
I just saw the other part of your post magneticzero, they never asked me for the number on my sim, should i call and make sure?

nah they already have it when they shipped you your phone. i was just saying incase you bought the tb used and had to get a new sim, then they would need the new number.
Oh alright, i bought it brand new as a new customer thru amazon so they should know my sim number, thanks for all your help guys, hopefully they get it ported soon!

I had to remove my sim card, reinstall, and reboot, then it found my number.
I was told by Verizon never to use the *228 feature. Because *228 will fry the sim card. I get the feeling by this phone using a sim card they may have more access to what is going on with it. I guess I will find out soon. Since the first thing I did was root it and flashed a custom rom.

It's not that they have any more access to what is happening on your phone then they did before. What changed is the use of a SIM card instead of a MEID.
The reason that you cannot call *228 is that VZW has to run two very unique provisioning systems, one for GSM and one for CDMA and *228 is the access number for the CDMA provisioning system. Because of the fundamental differences in technology between the networks, on a GSM (LTE) network there is no need for a customer accessible provisioning system. Even if you don't live in a 4G area, your phone provisioning is still controlled by the LTE system on the back end.
Remember on all prior CDMA phones your phone was actually tied to the CDMA network via the MEID number that was unique to each phone. The purpose of *228 was to have the phone pull down all of the provisioning information from the VZW back end servers (I.E. your phone number and all of the other provisioning information that the phone needs to operate correctly on the network with your phone number). Because the MEID was unique and hard coded into each handset any time a change was made to the account the end user had to dial *228 to update the information on the phone itself.
Now (and this is why everyone who has been with VZW for any length of time is being thrown for a loop) with GSM service (LTE is a GSM service) you are assigned a unique Subscriber Identity Module (SIM card). This card contains a unique number, along with all of the basic information any LTE phone needs to communicate with the network, which is hard coded in the sim card you are assigned when you got your TB and this number is assigned to your phone number in VZW's back end system (just like your MEID was prior). There is no such thing as an MEID like you are used to in an LTE network. Everything is tied to the unique identifier on the SIM card, not the phone itself.
Your TB has no MEID. It gets all of its provisioning information every time it boots from the information stored on the SIM card. That is why dialing *228 does absolutely nothing, because there is no MEID on the phone for the provisioning system to read, and there are no settings on the phone it can update.
Welcome to the SIM card express train, population, everyone already on a GSM network. And for what its worth, SIM cards have been in use in the US for a long time now. In fact many of the problems VZW techs are having frying SIM cards because they are not handled correctly or activated correctly very much reminds me of when PacBell Wireless first rolled out GSM service (PCS as they called it) back in 1997.
Success! Thanks to your detailed explanation Nusince I figured out that it wasn't updating because I had turned 4G off and also changed to their old 3g network using the ##778# dialer code. After putting those two settings back to their stock setting and I rebooted BAM my old number showed up and I had 3g again. Then I turned 4G off and went back to the old 3g network that way my phone doesn't keep dropping the data connection and it's all smooth sailing. Thanks for your help everyone and hopefully this helps someone in the future.

[Q] X2 on Alltel?

I have searched and searched and cannot find an answer. I recently acquired a Verizon Droid X2 and had it switched to my Alltel plan. Phone works great, but I cannot fix the dreaded no 3g no mms issues.
I have tried everything I could think of, but nothing. Wifi works fine, dialing out and receiving calls work fine, and sms text works fine.
I looked at the apn setting, which are not easy to find without the help of a 3rd party program on the market (apn shortcut), but now what I see is 5 entries for Verizon related services:
Verizon CBS
Verizon DUN
Verizon FOTA
Verizon IMS
Verizon Internet
But they all have a lock icon next to them, so I can't change any settings. I have tried creating a new entry but it doesn't save for some reason (my wife has the milestone x for alltel, works fine, I used tried to use her settings)
I have tried updating the prl, tried things like ##778 and all that, but none of these work for alltel.
Can anyone offer any help? Phone is almost worthless for me if I can have 3g and mms.
Thanks,
andyw123,
If you are subscribing to these service's that's something you should call Alltel / Verizon about. Verizon ownes Alltel I'am not sure if you know that.
{In early 2009, Verizon Wireless acquired Alltel, although the Alltel brand will remain until it is gradually phased out through the middle of 2009. Alltel was a large regional CDMA carrier offering service in 33 states, primarily in the south, midwest, and west. In 2005, the company acquired Western Wireless, a smaller carrier that operated under the Cellular One brand with service in 19 western states.}
Hope's This Help's
Thanks for the quick reply!
Ya, I tried that. They basically told me in a polite way that I shouldn't have taken a phone that wasn't part of Alltel's current line up and activated it on Alltel. Alltel told me that they could activate it, but couldn't guarantee that it would even work at all, which doesn't suprise me at all coming from Alltel.
I stopped at a total of 3 places, 2 alltel's and 1 verizon store. The first alltel told me they couldn't activate the x2 at all, but he tried, which messed up my current phone (he somehow deactivated it). Then went to Verizon next, they told me that I couldn't activate it at all because it wasn't part of Alltel's line up. Then I went to a corp store to get my old phone fixed, and somehow they were able to activate my x2, but with no data and no mms. Told me I was basically out of luck.
So, trying to decide if I should just sale the x2, which I don't want to do because currently the best phone Alltel has is the milestone x, which my wife has and it is dreadfully slow, slower than my old htc desire.
Anyone know of any other options that I might have?
Thanks

Thanks Juhde,
I've already been in that menu, made sure ALL (except for my phone number) settings matched my wifes milestone x phone, and still nothing. I'm not an expert, but sounds to me like it has something to do with the APN settings, which I cannot seem to change.
Funny thing about this is, I can "copy" the apn-conf.xml file or whatever it is called from the system/etc folder on the phone, and it shows my custom settings that should work (the same file was on my HTC phone, which worked). But, when I use the program from the market called "APN Shortcut" to view my apn settings, it doesn't show anything other than the verizon defaults. I have tried to add a new APN entry, but when I click save, it acts like it did save it, but no new entry.
I'm wondering if there is another location that is saving these entries and somehow verizon has figured out a way to bypass the default location to save apn settings. Later, I'm going to search on the phone and see if there is another xml file that contains those settings.
Thanks for the help!
I'm no expert at this, but a lot of the times "replacement" files won't function unless the permissions are set correctly. I'm not sure what the permissions should be for that file but you might want to look into it.
EDIT: after taking a closer look, the app APN Manager seems to be a better program for adding an apn. Wither it works I can't say but when I used it to swap apn it stuck after reboot.

This isnt alltel but i got my phone activated on another carrier.like you talk and txt worked. It wasn't until I flashed a few prl's and found one that got my 3g and mms working.mms still works spotty sometimes ,however.
I have 4 Verizon branded phones (mine is an x2) all using an alltel plan. I don't understand why you are having any problems at all
Do you mind give me some info from your x2? Like what the apn settings are set to and what prl you have?
Thanks!
i also have an alltel dataplan with an X2, no issues,
and no offense, but i dont know what is privileged info and what is not, so i wont be sharing
sorry

WTF do you mean privileged info? I think he is just wanting to compare the numbers, what is he going to do with the info from your phone, besides compare to his current setup?
There is nothing that I can do with your apn settings or your prl version that you are running. This is just so I can see if my setting are the same as your working settings. I have compared them to my wifes Milestone X and they are the same.
On another note. Here is something wierd. I was able to erase all the apn setting from verizon (i think) and then I added the apn setting from my wifes phone, clicked on save, and then it went back and didn't actually save them.
The more and more I think about it, I am wondering if it is a PRL problem instead of the apn settings problem. Seems alot of people got this problem fixed on their phone by doing the prl change. Problem with that is, most people say to do a ##prl to fix it, that doesn't work on this phone. The only code I can get to work is *#*#program#*#* or something like that. So, anyone know of a way to manually change my prl on my phone?
The prl update number for Verizon is *228 since Verizon owns Alltel I think it's the same.
Sent from my Android device.
Ya, thats it if you want to download whichever one that want to give you, but it won't let me put one on there that I got, if that makes any sense at all.
Basically, is there a file location that I can copy it to or maybe a way to install it like I would a zip from recovery or anything like that? I already have the file download that I want to try to use, but basically going to try a few to see if I notice any difference.
p.s. Now I think my phone is actually only ringing part of the time, the other times it seems to go straight to voice mail even though I have 4 bars and not in roaming...
Thanks for the input everyone by the way!
Sooooo you have dialed *228 and it didn't work? Verizon also has forced and secondary prl update numbers. Try *22898 & *22899. Also what does your network banner say? Alltel? Extended network? If it says Extended network you might call Alltel up and ask them where the nearest Alltel owned tower for you is, drive to its area, reboot and try to update again. 3rd party towers *usually* don't carry the data encryption key your phone needs to activate the data plan.
Sent from my Android device.
Ok, well... I called both the other *228xx numbers, and I was greeted by alltel. I clicked on 2 and it said "Your phone already contains the latest update" and that was it. and as far as my banner, it doesn't actually "say" alltel, or anything like that. Just shows with the 4 bars, or a triangle if I am in roaming. I know from past that in a near by big city does have alltel towers around, and I was there but no difference.
So, still back to square one.
Thanks again for all your help!!
Another quick update. I finally found a way to update just the prl file. So, I tried 41003.prl and updated it manually (was not too difficult, just alot of trial and error). Phone worked just fine, but still no 3g coverage. Next I went to 31005.prl which is an actual alltel prl, but still the same effect - no 3g.
So, I went back to the latest prl from alltel which is 31011.
So, I am pretty sure that the prl file is not the problem. I guess now I need to figure out the apn setting issue that I am having, which is basically the default verizon settings are not working for me, even if I am in a verizon territory (like columbus ohio, big city). Using an app that was suggested to me on this thread I was able to delete the verizon apn settings fine. But when I went to create new apn settings, I went through it all and clicked on save, but it didn't actually save them. So, back to square one.
It would be nice if someone who is currently using a stock x2 from verizon on alltel would tell me what their prl version number is and their apn settings are (using an app like apn shortcut - found on the market).
On a side note. One difference I noticed. Looking at my old android phone (htc desire), it shows the same apn setting basically as my wifes phone, but the MNC number is 120, mine is currently set to 004, which is not changeable.
Several weeks later, and still no 3g data at all. Wireless works flawless, and phone calls work (actually phone works better than an alltel phone)
One thought that I had but not sure if I posted about yet...When I got the phone from the guy I got it from, he said he "thinks" it has a bad esn. So, I got it on a chance, afterall I could sell it on ebay for more than I paid for it with a bad esn. Anyway, if it does have a bad esn on verizon, I'm not entirely sure that Alltel would check it or even care about that. So, since alltel is owned basically by verizon, but still a separate company as of now, I wonder if verizon is blocking data access because it might have a bad esn.
I guess my next step is to call verizon and see if they can tell me if the esn is bad. I have tried a verizon store, and they were NO help to me at all, and actually very rude. Alltel just tells me that "I won't be able to get data because I am not using one of their phones" which is crap.
So, I think ultimately we have eliminated the prl possibility, apn is still my number one concern, but now I am leaning towards a bad esn. If that is the case, does anyone have any ideas on what I might be able to do with a bad esn? I know it is illegal to "change" an esn, and I don't think it is possible right now with the x2, but do I have any other options besides going back to my old phone (htc desire - not a bad phone, just want the larger screen and faster performance).
Thanks again everyone. Everyone has been alot of help!
If you wanna take drastic measures, search for a program called radiocomm, it's what motorola uses to program the radio.
A word of warning: if you change something with radiocomm and do it wrong the radio will become useless and the software is VERY complex to use. It could take you literally years to figure out but who knows, maybe you can find out exactly what parameter needs tweaking. I'd advise caution using radiocomm though. I just wanted you to know of the option.

However, after hitting write to phone, mine automatically restarts. Dunno if that was supposed to happen. When I try and make calls I get "TSL 02 the number or service code you are attempting is not available or accessible from your calling plan" and then the call is ended.
Did I do something wrong? I went into the metro PCS store and asked about putting my ESN in the database and they looked at my like I was speaking latin. So I asked about metroflash and they said they don't do that to this phone. Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated. Verizon was taking too long for the nexus galaxy and I really don't want to sign another contract...

Just got back from 7 metro PCS stores including a corperate one, appears they refuse to add my ESN into the system, or even add a line for this phone. They will NOT metroflash it.
And apparently "All these kids are learning to unlock their phones and they want to add them to our network"
I have the $50/m plan that is required for smart phones. I searched metro pcs esn on craigslist nothing came back. I now have NO idea how to get this phone to work...
EDIT: I just tried doing *611 on my 3vo after "flashing" it to metropcs and it takes me to sprint's customer service. does that mean I did it wrong?
Just go to a dealer store. Most corporate stores stores dont wanna do smartphones(some will). But if you go to a dealer store they will houdini your phone. Which is where they write an esn from a phone in their inventory to your phone to get it into the network. When they flash it it will do the prl part for you. And if you already have the data provisioned everything will work from the time they flash it.
Reflasing on Sprint Data not working
Sorry not to hijack the thread but I think someone here might have the expertise to help me with the issue. I have a evo 3d that was flashed to Metro. I wanted to flash it back to Sprint, I cleaned the esn. Voice and txt works but data does not. I keep getting error code 67. upon more research i found out that i needed to copy NAI and AAA and HA secrets. Which I made sure were correct. However, I still keep getting error 67. Can anyone help me on how to get 3g data working? thanks in advance.

Yea that error is because your not connecting to data. I know sprint you can zero out the ha and AAA. Where you used to have your metro msl code that needs to be replaced with your meid hex. Your gonna also need to make sure your sid/nid are those for Sprint. I do now know those off hand. One thing you can try to get those settings back is flashing a new radio it will contain the nv items you need for those spots.

That's what I thought I did, The in Evo 3d, using QXDM, i set addresses 465, 466, 1192, 1194. one of the user id was my [email protected] and another one was [email protected]
AAA was 'secret' and HA secret, i copied over from the old working phone.
Just to try I also did, ##SPC# (SPC= my spc code) and reset my data, after it rebooted the phone it tried doing hands free activation but it would error out again...
i feel like i am so close yet little further from working outcome..

Can some1 sorta explainthe process of flashing to metro i had my Evo flashed by a guy that im sure knows what he is doing and everything went smooth. Now my sis and bro both got themselves Evos but this dude keeps on givin the run around and switching up the prices one phone was already being used w. Metro when bought but he insists that it needs to be "reflashed" (since its been on metro b4 wouldnt he just have to activate it to the existing acct?) the other has never been flashed. what im mostly wondering is, besides adding the esn into metro network is there anything else that MUST be done by a metro dealer? Is this thread for actual flashing or for provisioning like bloody's guide?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
You won't find any guides that truly show how to flash. Technically all the guides here do show you how to flash them. But metro is using a differnt method to flash now. So its not as simple as giving them your esn to have it added. They write an esn from a metro branded phone to yours. As far as the one that was flashed already all you need to do is call metro from it. Then provision the data from bloody or jds guide in order to get web and mms.

i nevered seen this little guide right here... haha....
what happens is this,
msid 9412333323 or 9412340237 or 7272271341
u can use this number i think, any metro msid number near u. i had these saved, from my new evo, and old touchpro,
u have to use a metro number for it to connect or something...
I did both of the following steps..
I did bloodys provision and at the same time i looked for the msid num.
in qpst u need to go through all the pages, i think i found the old number in 2 or 3 spots... if its a number change..
in DFS...
MIN A = USE ur 10 digit phone number,
MIN D = USE the msid number,
add any metropcs prl and u should connect to metro before any flash, change ur number or whatever...
i manually flash my 2 evos, but the 1st metroflash to add the esn, the internet and mms worked out the door,
The second in ebay 45 to add the esn, then I dialed *228 and it worked..worked on the first shot,,, after it was added.. it was activated with my acct.. yeah..
edit: 12-23
##3282# under ADVANCED u will see MSID
