Upgrade frimware without losing root or data - LG V30 Questions & Answers

How to upgrade to a later version of oreo without losing root or any data?
I recently rooted my phone using the following method:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76584629&postcount=193
I have LG-H930G (Actually now I'm using the firmware of an LG-H930 because that enabled me to unlock my bootloader)
Android 8.0
Security patch level 1 May 2018
Thanks in advance...

Flash TWRP flashable zip, reflash Magisk.
Explained thoroughly in WTF INSTRUCTIONS and the EU H930 KDZ threads.
Choose the last Oreo TWRP-flashable zip if you want to stay on Oreo. See the EU H93O Oreo KDZ thread.

[H850] Rooted, TWRP v10 to Nougat, how to do it?

Hi,
It should be simple, but I'm confused what to do and which version to install... I have EU, not branded H850 v10e. Rooted with TWRP so official update by Bridge or OTA isn't an option. I wanna move to Nougat, but how? I can't find any Nougat zip to use in TWRP, so I figure only option is to use LGUP. But what version should I install? All I can see are branded versions...
Could someone help me and provide a simplest and safest method to move to Nougat?
Also, TWRP and root isn't problematic in N, same procedure as on MM?
Thanks in advance,
Mark

You could try using TWRP to flash autoprime's zips from here https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/development/stock-h850-20a-eu-rom-flashable-zips-t3506514 and follow the OP instructions for rooting. You could also use LGUP to flash H85020a_00_OPEN_EU_OP_1030.kdz that autoprime has also posted at the link above. Just make sure you have the Nougat TWPR installed: twrp-3.0.2-1-h850.img, which can be found here https://dl.twrp.me/h850/
Thanks! For some reason I couldn't find this flashable N zip.... But on the weekend I already switch to N with LGUP

Nevermind, I was able to sorted it out updated using Uppercut.
How do you upgrade to MM?

Bootloader unlocked, how to update to Android 9?

I unlocked my bootloader, but I can't seem to find a guide on updating to Android 9. My current firmware has xloader 02.
When I bought it a year ago, you could update it without issues with hwota, but from what I see, that is now disabled. Is there a current program or guide that simplifies changing the firmware to an updated one?

Use the tool from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-10/how-to/firmware-bla-l29-c432-9-0-0-161-t3873835
If you don't yet have root, you can use the EMUI9 beta update tool.
Else you will have to install Magisk first.

You could rebrand before flashing Pie. Don't rebrand while going to Pie, it's usually a bad idea.

They are kept.
If you downgrade using rollback they will wipe though (and only use rollback from January or later if you ever need to downgrade)

Downgrade from Pie to Oreo

Hi guys,
Pie is laggy and buggy on my phone. Like on battery saver mode vibration continue to work, and when multitasking it's embarrassingly slow! ... The overall experience is bad. A factory reset didn't solve anything.
I want to downgrade to Oreo 22j. Can someone please guide me on how to do it?
My phone is a stock H930 and I used LGUP to update.
Thank you

Do you mean before the update? No I didn't. But I did after the update, which unfortunately resolved absolutely nothing.

My H930 was also laggy after the V30b OTA flashed with LG UP, even after the factory reset. Then I downgraded to 22j and flashed the V30b KDZ which became available in this time. Whole another world. Smooth as butter.

Hi Edvin73,
Sorry I didn't quite understand.
Did you receive an OTA update on your phone and it was laggy? Which method exactly worked well for you?
I flashed the KDZ available here on XDA with LGUP, and it was laggy for me.

No, I didn't receive the OTA. I flashed the leaked V30b OTA I got here on XDA. Because the experience on Pie was awful (choppy, very bad battery life) even after a factory reset, I reflashed 22j KDZ with LG UP and decided to wait for a official Pie roll out. Few days later, I found out that the official Pie upgrade is available through LG bridge. That did it. My phone is at least as smooth as on Oreo and the battery life is quite amazing but it obviously depends from personal usage. The only thing that seems different is the RAM management. Now uses more RAM with the same settings and installed apps. Regards.
PS: Completely stock, no root, no unlocked bootloader, no anything rather than complete stock.
Thank you for your answer.
Yes I also noticed that Pie uses more RAM than Oreo and the RAM management was bad and random. Maybe 4Go don't cut it anymore? I don't know.
Glad to hear that it's working perfectly for you. Unfortunately I can't update through LG Bridge, I get the "Cannot check the software version" error
It is the same for me, my battery life since I've updated my phone by OTA is awful, is it possible to downgrade without rooting my phone which I've never did?

HOW TO DOWNGRADE BACK TO OREO
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=79964731&postcount=2
While it talks about how to downgrade for bootloader unlock, it's still just downgrading from Pie to Oreo. Same method, no matter the reason.
Downgrading to Oreo KDZ has nothing to do with root. It's just most people who downgrade are doing that so they can then unlock bootloader and root (on early Oreo).
But you can downgrade to most recent Oreo, whatever you wish.
Use the method in post #2, ignore the reason most people use it.

Cheers I'm gona use this :good:
No issues on my device during the first week. Only stock Gallery app is slower and more laggy than before. It's like cache is not working there so every time I open some folder in Gallery it starts loading pictures from beginning which is causing lags.
Some other issues are there with Nova launcher and multitasksing, but this is due to this launcher. On stock everything is fine.
My LGUP showing "please use latest dll LAF protocol does not match"
Since I flashed v300l30f pie firmware on my lg v30 oreo. I started seeing this message "please use latest dll,LAF protocol does not match" .
I tried many common dll but nothing solved my problem.

You need Dev Patched LGUP compatible with Pie.
You need to update to newest Dev Patched LGUP found in any of the Pie KDZ threads I maintain. Also found in Frankenstein thread.
Uninstall any prior version. Read Installation instructions carefully!

Most efficient way to update to pie?

Hi guys,
My v30 H930 (europe) is still on Android Oreo V22j. Now with the upcoming release of the less buggy version of Android Pie (v30q), I probably want to upgrade
I have TWRP installed and I have Magisk root (19.3).
What's the easiest way to upgrade to Pie (keep root ofc) and can I keep my data or do I have to wipe and set up as a new device?
Flash KDZ in LGUP as upgrade and reflash twrp/magisk?

Easiest is to wait for Pie zip and flash it.
It's a good idea to backup internal storage whenever you do a major upgrade.
All other stuff is answered in detail on ChazzMatt's pie kdz thread
Just go to leaked V30q thread and read ? not that difficult

Those links are still to beta version. People may update that way with their phones if they wish -- and thank you for providing that option -- but anyone should understand that's still technically beta.
When it's official, it will be released as full image KDZ and dev created TWRP flashable zips based on that full image KDZ will both be posted in the EU H930 KDZ thread.

Some people have, yes.
Dev doesn't recommend it. If it doesn't work, then you would need to wipe. See the TWRP flashable zip installation instructions.

I know its beta until officially released; just don't get the prejudice around it. It's way more stable than the official V30b kdz btw.
In OP's scenario it's even easier to use V30q, since he is already rooted. Just restoring the TWRP backup provided and re-rooting would do the job, with no need to wipe data.
