I have a sim card which has stopped working, my network provider cut me off after not topping it up regularly enough. This sim card is 11 years old with tons of business contacts in whatsapp and vital messages I need restoring. I just recently went through a process to upgrade the ROM without thinking and although that failed to work out, I put the old rom back only to find out i can no longer restore my original number with all those contacts on. Before I started to flash the ROM i did make a manual whatsapp backup to drive.
Now, I have a new number, installed whatsapp and I have no option to restore the backup from the drive I did earlier on the old number.
Is there any hope here for me to restore my old backup to the new number?
I think, you can't. Even if you synced with the same Google account, you cant restore backup from another number.

Hey guys, I just got my S3 yesterday. I encountered some problems and I think should be no one met this problem, hope some of you can help me.
Previously I was using SGS, and I rooted and flashed a custom rom which is this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1442169&highlight=doc+s+rom
So, I did Titanium Backup and GO backup (for spare) on SGS. On S3, I rooted it for installing Titanium Backup, I copied the Titanium Backup files and move it all into my S3 through PC.
Both devices running on same android version 4.0.4, SGS is on custom rom but S3 is still on stock rom. At first I think my files on SGS can be transfer and backup on S3, but eventually I did all the backups, but all the apps (only user apps) are still cannot open, such as LINE, Talkbox, Whatsapp and etc. Open the app and it will close it automatically.
And also, some of the apps such as LINE needs to register with the phone number. Previously I registered on SGS, now my number transfer to S3 and LINE cannot be open in SGS anymore. When I backup in S3 and it ask me to register with phone number, and I did, but it became a new app, no chat history, no added friends. Is it because I register on S3 and so my SGS does not recognize the LINE app?
What I concerned about is the chat history, I need it so much. Everytime I flashed a new custom rom, I did the backups on SGS, from GB 2.3.3 until ICS 4.0.4, and the backups are works. But this time, I really cannot figure out what problem I am having now.
I still using the same number, from a normal SIM to micro SIM,
1. Is it because does not working to transfer file from different devices?
2. Is it because my number use on a new device, and all the previous data cannot be transfer?
Any kind soul please give me some guidance?
I really NEED to transfer the old chat history into my S3, I don't want to lose it because it is my memories.
generally its not advisable to restore a backup of one device to another device, but as you said its working for you earlier. try restoring the apps alone in TB and later restore the data of the specific apps you need.

Thanks for reply. Yes is working only in SGS.I tried restoring the app alone in TB and restore the data of the specific app in S3, and is still not working. It still close automatically.
Does anyone knows how to restore a backup from one device to another device?
Or maybe I transfer back my number to my SGS, and everything will be same as before?
I recently rooted my phone. Before doing so I attempted to export my contacts, but in the processing of reloading the phone I have lost or wiped out the contacts list I exported. I also took a adb backup before wiping the phone. Is there any chance I can extract the contacts from the backup and restore them to the new configuration?
adb backup was performed when the phone was on 2.19.605.2... Phone is now running KitKat 4.4.4
Do backup Kk Rom, restore 2.19.605.2, save your contacts and restore Kk Rom back Btw you don't have Google account? Because it's good place to save your contacts, especially when you often change Roms

I keep all my contacts in Goolge. That way they are never lost. It also allows my wife and I to share contacts.
Contacts in Google
I have had Android devices for years and keep getting things screwed up on the contact side. I am not even sure how it happens. Some contacts end up on the phone and some end up in Google. When I reloaded the phone and tablet a while back all of my contacts got duplicated in gmail with old and new data all mixed together. Makes a huge mess. I need to spend a little time figuring out what I am doing wrong and clean up all of the messes. I try to stick with GMAIL for contacts, but it seems like with all of the applications asking to sync contacts, sometimes you click yes before you really realize the impact of the decision you are making.
I was not able to get the old contacts back from the backup. For some reason they didn't restore. Decided I am just OK with that... Maybe I will be a little more careful next time.
I still wonder if it would have been possible to find the backed up contacts database so I could import it in to the android emulator and export the contacts... Maybe a weekend project when it gets cold out.
I would like to backup Whatsapp from my G3 and to restore onto my new v10 (h961n), however I noticed there's no root out there atm and I have no idea how to backup and restore WhatsApp onto the new phone. I need to do this as I use a different phone number on my WhatsApp than my sim card number and I don't have the sim for the WhatsApp number with me.
I normally would use titanium backup but that wouldn't help in this case..... Any ideas?
Things went like this :
1: I did a backup (local and gdrive) of my messages on old phone/number
2: Click the change number on old phone and did the process successfully
3: Transferred my backup to the internal storage of new phone
4: Downloaded whatsapp on new phone/number and verified the account
5: Whatsapp saw the backup and tried to restore it but failed
I realized I did the backup with the OLD number and I am trying to restore it on the NEW number.
I tried opening whatsapp on the old phone (to do a new backup now with new number) but it said my account was verified on another phone now.
I was about to verify again my account on my old phone when it suddenly DIED. (it was on its last legs, barely working, all screen cracked). Now my old phone does not power on.... I cannot do a new backup
IS there any way I can restore my messages on my new phone?? I had about 4000 unread messages!! My account transferred fine but I cannot restore my messages.
Backup was made with latest version of whatsapp, it is a crypt12 file and I have the key file from OLD phone.
(New phone is not rooted)
Thank you very much, I hope someone can help me figure this out
Hello,
I need to restore an old WhatsApp backup from 2014 (crypt7). I still have the same phone number, so there should be no problem.
Usually I do the following:
1) Copy the backup to "/sdcard/Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/"
2) Install WhatsApp
3) Start WhatsApp and verify the phone number
4) A notification asks me if I want to restore the local backup
5) Done
This worked for recent backups and also for backups back to mid 2016.
For the backup from 2014, WhatsApp didn't find the local backup, instead I was asked to check for Goode Drive backups.
As mentioned here in this case I turned off WiFi & mobile data, let WhatsApp check for online backups till the network error appeared and skipped.
But in the end, there was no local backup found.
The problem is also, from all this trying, my number got now blocked for 12 h because WhatsApp thinks I'm a spammer, sadly.
What am I doing wrong?
1) Should I remove my Google Account from my smartphone (Android 12) after installing WhatsApp and before staring the verification process?
2) Would it maybe help to install and old WhatsApp version like 2.21.8.17 as mentioned here?
3) Is there a way to push a local WhatsApp backup to Google Drive, so I could restore it from there?
4) Can I do anything against the spam protection mechanism, so WhatsApp knows that all these verifications are for a good reason and not for spamming?
Thanks in advance.
