nokia7 plus - camera issue? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I almost do not dare to askhere, but I'll give it a swing nevertheless . . .
Anyone else exprienced problems with their cameras(s) recently (after latest Nokia/Google updates?) - ( cam only producing green faulty image after lengthy wait.)
I have the builtin Nokia Cam app, and the cstark27 PXv4.1.1
I love the CStark version even if slow-mo crashes the app - but it's just so much better than Nokias own meager attempt.
But recently, both apps starts failing, it doesn't take pictures, when button pressed. No sound made but it also doesn't crash.
However, after some time a faulty image is produced, with nothing but the sad dark green color.
Phone is not rooted. And it's not even a Pixel. It's only a Nokia 7 Plus - but in the name of Greta Thunberg I try to save the globe by making do with old and less.
Sorry for bothering here with my non-Pixel device, but maybe one of you have a suggestion?
Is my hardware bad or IS it the recent updates?
Can it be fixed?
Thanks.

Anyone working on fixing the camera app?

I see a lot of people developing their own flavor of gingerbread for the Evo 3D and that's awesome. But I don't see much improving other aspects of the phone that could be universal... like the camera.
I'm a photographer/video producer so this sort of thing is important to me and I don't want to carry my big camera everywhere. We all know the biggest issue with the camera is the green-tinted pictures taken with the flash. I don't even see a white balance setting for the flash available to choose manually.
I had read that there were a lot of other features promised but removed from this phone's camera such as scene modes (though I could care less about this).
Another issue I've read about and noticed is the jpg compression used for the camera. It's good for the small screen and web, but too heavily compressed for anything else.
Then there's an issue of when you half-press the shutter button, it focuses (good) then press all the way it re-focuses. The proper way this should work is focus on half press, snap photo without another focus on the full press.
The shutter lag is awful too, but I guess it's pretty much the norm as far as phones go.
Of course I have a wishlist of things to be added *cough new mytouch camera cough* but someone needs to figure out this green flash problem first...

i have very little professional photography experience and def don't have the eye to pick up on the color differences as they appear very subtle to me.
are there any camera apps in the market which implement some of the features you've listed?
as far as modifying the htc camera apk file, it is not open sourced so all work will have to be done through reverse engineering.
the compression setting was mentioned a few days ago in a thread here and i did research it in the AOSP version of the camera apk which is open sourced. i was able to find the line with the compression setting and it should be fairly simple to modifying the settings panel to provide an option for the user to adjust this. all the info is in my post on that thread.
if you wanted to post up your wish list of camera features, or contact some of the camera app devs in the market with your feature list, given you have a professional photography background, i would think they would be open to your suggestions.
Thanks for the reply. I didn't realize it would take so much reverse engineering there. And yes, some photos with the flash are harder to tell the off white balance, but I stopped using the flash and never taking night pics with this phone... Day time photos are awesome if not for the compression.
I haven't had much luck in finding any camera apps yet, hasn't occurred to me really. But I do love HDR Pro for the hdr pics - if anyone's interested in experimenting with that (takes a couple pics in dif exposures then combines them for a more natural and detailed photo)
I guess I'll have to wait to see if HTC does anything more with it or search for an alternative. Thanks though.
It's a phone. You'll never get true professional quality photos from a phone no matter what app you use. As a photographer you know that...f-stops, aperture, lenses and all the other stuff that photographers talk about can't really be changed on a phone's camera. To really get professional quality photos and video, even though phone cameras have gotten very good, you need to use the right equipment.

You're right but that's not my complaint. As I stated, my biggest gripe is the green tinted photos with the flash and compression. There are features I'd like to see from the latest mytouch camera (native hdr, no shutter lag - which is done with a constant image stream or something like that, etc)
you can have some things improved with the software side of things, but yes, hardware is a limitation and I'm not expecting this to replace a professional camera.

I've used HDR pro. I've also used Vignette which was my favorite camera app on the EVO 4G. It works on the 3D but of course you can only take 2D pictures with any of the third party cameras...so far.
On the HTC website/forum they do acknowledge the issues with the camera and say they are working on an update to correct them. I guess we'll see if that ever comes to fruition.

[Q] SGS2 camera F/W and its related issues.

Hello!
The story begins with my defective camera - it had the stuttering/lag problem when i was making 1080p and 720p videos, so i took my phone to the shop where i bought it, they sent it to make investigation. Few days later they called me and approved the issue that the camera is defective. Right after they called me i went to the shop to get the new phone, but they said that the WHITE one is out of stock right now so i had to wait 3 days. After talking some time to the seller, I achieved that i will be able to open as many new phone boxes as i like till i get phone with the correct firmware (ofc i will have to turn it on and check the F/W)..
I know that the best one out there is OMEF01, but it will be a small chance that ill get precisely this one F/W..
The worst one is SCEF02 that i had on my old phone and the videos were very bad, cuz of the stuttering problem..
So now my question to u all is: WHICH are the best F/W for SGS2 i9100 that doesnt make LAGS while taking videos at 1080p and 720p quality? Are there any other except OMEF01?
I know there are many discussions about cameras, but i havent seen one, where all the camera F/W of SGS2 are in the same thread, and i believe that those mentioned before arent the only ones that are out there..
So this thread could show and give information to all SGS2 users about the bad and good F/W.
Lets start it like this:
OMEF01 - no lag problems (while making 720p and 1080p videos), some got pink spot;
SCEF02 - stutters (FPS drop on low light conditions), got pink spot;
...
Thanks.

Camera issues

I got the HTC One Max in Feb and I liked it even though I knew the camera wasn't that good because it was missing ISO (hardware, not software). Updating to 4.2.2 with Sense 6 pretty much broke the camera for me. When trying to zoom onto an object at close range, it'll focus and then distort and the camera keeps making a buzzing noise like it's trying to keep auto focusing but it passes the point of a clear picture and never fixes itself. I never rooted, unlocked bootloader, or S-off this device--everything is stock. It's frustrating that I'm spending so much money on a phone for it to just mess up like this. Any advice or something for a fix? Can I install the old camera APK from a previous version of android?
RMA it....hard ware issue it appears
agree, sounds like an RMA to me too. I have had the one max since launch day.
the camera is great. I dont use the stock camera app because its limited in what it gives the user, but i have taken good images with this camera.

Done basically install the apk see if it works or not
You should change "60p" to "60 fps". I think you're confusing vertical resolution with fps.
Regardless, I'm glad we're talking about this. 30 fps video is dumb and objectively much worse than 60 fps. Google's priorities here are totally wrong.
Btw, video preview is running at around 5-10 fps, and app FCs when you start recording. That's on a non-rooted 6.0.1.
I totally agree, having 120/240 fps options but 1080p60 has been left out?
Thats really, REALLY stupid. Ive been wanting something like this since launch, too bad most people dont care for it - otherwise I'm sure google would have done it way earlier.

You are mistaken, google doesn't care for it either.
Which, reading their reply, is total BS.
Theyre focusing on making it stable? They've had more than enough time to do that, it's plenty stable - given their resources and the fact that they designed it on their own platform. Not to mention the existence of 120/240 fps making it painfully obvious that this is either laziness or an oversight (neither are excusable) for not having included a 60fps option, my S5 had that for gods sake, a phone that launched in April of '14 had this ability. Along with each successor to the Galaxy line, iphones, LG, I cant think of a flagship that can't do it?
Maybe I'm (we're?) in the minority in believing that it's pathetic to have a phone with the capabilities this one does, but lacks a function that very few - if any - new phones also lack that would really make the videos taken on the device a lot better. I'ts getting frustrating that Google, and the Nexus brand, are supposed to be top of the line and cutting edge - for the most part - but have, seemingly on purpose, chosen to exclude some of the key desirable components that customers want. Wireless charging (i know it was left out to make it thinner) but still... and these were two things I really hoped for, I think the 6P was a step in the wrong direction. Huawei really treated me like **** when they sent me the wrong 6P (the bastard model that excluded band 10 for some dumb reason) and refused to allow me to exchange or return it no matter what.
If Huawei makes the 2016 Nexus, I will gladly wash my hands of it, there's no way that company will ever get my business again.
I think you guys are mistaken here, its not like nexus is the only one without 1080p 60fps, out of all latest flagships only s7 can record 1080p 60fps, htc 10, lg g5, oneplus 3, mi 5 and so on also cant record 60fps, only 30
I've pushed modified blob and app source to git @ https://github.com/defcomk/c2Vid as stated I have no camera 2 device so I go by logcats .
Anyway the source is there added some log lines as from the crash I could not see what exactly caused the crash

From the leaked Qualcomm camera source code it looks like 60fps comes part of most libs and oems remove them for what reason I dunno but if you can find a device with same sensor and 60fps all that is needed is the registers for timmings and clocks and res entry but the later can be calculated.
There is hope for LG G5/One Plus 3/Mi5
HTC I tried but could only get it to 40fps in camera 1 mode Camera 2 mode the target fps range stuff maxed out at 30 perhaps when ae turned off in full manual it will work .in Camera 1 mode its another mess by htc where they broke qualcom video-hfr parameter in favour of their own video-mode which seems like a copy paste job from htc one m9 half then they broke it.
I patched hal as far as to allow fps range up to 120fps but the code that switches between the different sensor out put res mode was crippled.
I dunno if Camera2 was intended to even support 60p the only method I see is using HighSpeedCapture mode which only recognizes >=120 .
So in the blob pushed to git 1080p is set to max fps of 120 so it shows up in The high-speed mode .
In the root of the repo is text file showing imx377 configs

Oh yeah I know. I get where youre coming from for sure and I agree. It is a shame more dont do implement it. I dont think there should be hate directed towards them alone for it, many companies do not take advantage of the full hardware ability. I do wish they would implement it already though. Both the n6 and n6p and the capability but they dont take advantage of it. If they ever release a explanation as to why, id be all ears.

They kinda did release an explanation, dont remember word by word, but sounded something like they dont really care about 60fps, all they care about is stability, performance, bug free expirience and start up time of camera app. So i guess they suspect these things could get worse if 60fps was implemented. Oh and if samsung can do it, so should others, unless samsung has some kind of superior developers, of which i really doubt lol

I mean most people complain about slow start times of the camera on tge n6p anyway so I'd hate to see it slowed even further. While Samsung isn't exactly the best developers, they have a massive amount of devs I'm sure. But I still agree. If they can do it, Google and others should be able to also.
Just to clarify, my dislike for Huawei stems far beyond this issue. I will link to the thread (if anyone wants it) where I outline the month-long ordeal where they constantly lied to me about having a tech call me back, refunding my purchase, allowing me to return my 128GB 6P - all because they sent me the A2 style 6P, not the A1 style which everyone else on this continent got, and I purchased 4 other identical 6Ps in that same order, but one was a bastard model that lacked band 10, a band that is necessary for it to work for me on USCC (works on everyone else though) - Google NEVER sold the A2 style, only the A1 (which included band 10) and works perfectly fine. Of the 4 phones purchased, 3 were the A1 style, 1 was the A2 style, and this was never an option when ordered since...there was never more than 1 style that was publically known. They gave me a phone with missing hardware, refused to replace/return/rectify the situation in any form.
Anyway, THATS why I will never do business with them again. Their CS is absolute bull**** and they lie to their customers when they have legitimate issues that THEY caused.
The 60fps issue is on Google, it would be sweet to have, and I can't see any reasonable logic to not including it with the app on the phone? Thats all.
Cleaned up the bickering, let's all play nicely together please.
Hope you have a good day!

With 120fps 1080p we could set fps range to 60,60 allowing 60p video.

i still don't understand what the apk is supposed to do. does it modify the camera app? does it replace the camera app? does it introduce a new fps mode? did you modify the 120fps mode to be 60fps even though the option still says 120fps?

I do believe thats what he's saying, his mod would (if the hardware is capable of it) allow 1080p video to be shot at 120 fps. The app wouldnt change or have an additional option, what would happen is when you select 120fps it would default to 1080p rather than 720p.
Basically, if this works then he now knows how to correctly mod the file to function with the phone without crashing and bugging out, this is something that until now only LCamera was capable of, but the development of that has come to a grinding halt. If this works, then he knows how to add, remove, change values in the camera software to allow 1080p60, 1080p120, 4k60 and potentially more - although the bandwidth for 4k30 is quite high, if the phone is capable of 1080p120 then it theoretically is capable of a hell of a lot more than what BS options Google has in it now.
BTW, found THIS thread, where a google rep dances around others who want this, making **** up as to why this wasnt implemented in the first place and how they dont plan to add it.
I'll test this in just a sec and report back, need to update my rom anyway, so idc if it borks the camera.
EDIT:
Tried flashing the zip, that didnt work - extracted zip, will try installing the apk. Will advise.
EDIT 2:
App opens, video passthrough is laggy - very laggy, when i hit record, it closes the app, and now it wont open back up. :/

did you modify the 120fps mode to be 60fps even though the option still says 120fps? It's more complicated than that, and OP is still working things out.

-That app was created for another device so the lag is expected and Yes defcomk is creating a software mod and will enable the FPS we deserve. some good progress but nothing solid yet. (patience)
-This won't bork your camera lol
-Regarding L Camera, it was capable but was more of a test being that it got the job done on the Nexus 5 but with lot's of sacrifices and such. hence the reason it was more of a way of just testing camera 2 api. The IMX377 sensor on our phone is more than capable but defcomk is still deep in testing.

well, it does this for me too which is unfortunate.
I don't really understand what's the problem? Can't someone just make a camera app that records at 120fps and just saves one frame and throws away the other? There you go 60fps.
Or you could edit the video yourself and remove every second frame?

review required : current status of the phone

I am on the lookout for best VFM phone(with 820 chipset, decent camera), currently. I am a power user, hence, flashing/rooting is good with me.
My budget is INR 20K. How would you rate LEMax2 ?
With CM13 ROM, are all issues hw/sw resolved ?
please let me know since I am buying for wifey. And she is not techie.
Thanks for your time.
I am using Cm13 (Mokee) + pixel Launcher, about 2 days and everything is working fine.
on cm13 camera is pretty bad, everything else worked for me (except IR, but i'm not using it)
Buying for wife and she isn't a techie? Then just stick with the latest stock Indian firmware and put Google Now, Pixel or ZenUI launcher on there. Everything works fine, it's fast, stable and has Google services properly preinstalled. The way eui has the notifications is clean and easy to use, and having the quick toggles in the multitasking shade is fine once you get used where they are. Battery life is good. She won't really gain anything from CM.
If you're going to review it, then I strongly advice to mention about the fingerprint issue, it is really hit or miss. Mine worked for 14 days and now is kinda dead, I even flashed 3-4 Roms, but still I can't get it to work.
EDIT: From what I read in LeEco forums, fingerprints issues seems due to faulty hardware, but I guess no one really knows if it is HW or SW related. I tried MoKee, CM 13 and EUI (Cuoco92), and none of them worked so far.
Camera is little above average, you can take pretty good shots with enough lighting, otherwise it's not that great in darkest places.
I really enjoy the screen, IPS panel and QuadHD resolution make everything sharper, with well balanced colors and more over has good visibility outdoors with sunlight.
I don't like AMOLED screens, they have way too saturated colors for my tastes, but that is up to your personal preferences.
I would recommend it, given a few flaws like no expandable memory, no jack audio, software support uncertain, fingerprint not that great.
But after all, where else you can find a device with 4GB RAM, Snap820 and QuadHD 5,7" screen for less than 200 €?
Hi, thanks for the feedback. Is fingerprint issue h/w or s/w issue ?
I thought it might be s/w bug, which would be resolved thru update to stock/ CM rom.
Also, how is the camera, screen. Do you recommend it as the best VFM phone ?
Thanks,
Thanks, I like to keep phones updated to latest android version. I saw some activity related to CM13/CM14. Is it a dead/slow end ?
I would like to buy the phone only if there is sufficient support for the device. And if there are not h/w issues. fingerprint works well ?
Thanks @Star_dust6, thanks for the update. I should be good to order it then
Honestly on the ROM it shipped with I did have some hit or miss issues with the fingerprint sensor. Since flashing the official indian ROM I've had zero issues. Only when my hands are dirty, but that is to be expected.
