broken screen: recover data/change usb settings/getting device recognised by adb (?) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
i broke the Display of my ZTE Axon 7 mini on stock ROM and without USB debugging enabled. No custom recovery or anything done to the device. The touch interface of the screen is at least partially functioning, i'm able to boot it, unlock it by guessing where to draw the pattern (i know bc the fingerprint sensor is working afterwards) and power off as well by clicking on the spot where the button should be. I've read some threats about tools to access your phone with broken screens, but nothing worked. Thing is, i think i set the usb-setting to "charge only" when connected to my pc. So the device won't be recognizedwith adb fastboot. Which means i cannot use the method described here for instance.
So does anybody know how i could change the settings or get at the data generally? I'd be really glad if someone could help.

[Q] Rescue S3 with broken display and digitizer and without USB debugging

Hi guys!
I have a Galaxy S3 with broken display and (MHL tested) broken digitizer.
Device works, I get home screen but can't unlock.
I would rescue the smartphone and I think that the way is using ADB (with [email protected], screencast or similar).
I don't have alternatives right?
The problem is that I can't use ADB cause actually it does not have USB debugging enabled.
Just a couple of questions:
Can I use ADB in recovery mode (without USB debugging)?
With MHL I get broadcast in home screen, not before, is that normal? How about MHL in recovery mode?
I can only imagine a solution: Go in recovery mode and execute a "no-look" change of ROM installing something with USB debugging option enabled by default.
Do you have other solutions?
Who can help me doing this? Does exist a "how-to" somewhere? Which ROM?
Thanks!!
Hello,
i had the same problem, i could solve it. Here is how i did it:
Click.
I first had to root the phone and also get a recovery on it (i think it enabled ADB).
The problem is the broken digitizer. You can't use the USB-Debugging because you need to confirm a popup from Android (i think it depends on the Version of Android).
Hope it helps.

Broken Screen and a pattern i cant unlock

Hi everyone, i got a pain in the ass problem that i cannot fix. I've been looking for 3 days in a huge labyrinth of forums before posting this.
The screen of my phone got broken and half of it doesnt respond, and i cant unlock the pattern screen because part of it is on the damaged part. I dont want to reset the phone, just try to skip the pattern screen or use it remotely on a PC, and seems very hard to achieve.
The phone is from a low-cost brand i bought in Mexico, the model is Vios 502015. The android version is 4.4.2. I think it is not root, but right now i dont know how to check it.
I tried using the device manager of Google to block the phone and change the pattern to a password that i can type with the unbroken side of the screen, but the phone has the wifi off and no sim because i lost it and till a couple of days i wont have another. Also tried to put a friend's sim in the phone for if the conection was on by magic or something like that. Didnt work, anyway new sim doesnt work.
I tried connecting a mouse with OTG and doesnt work either. It has not enabled the USB debugging mode and I ve been looking these days how to enable that option wihtout using the screen but it seems imposible.
When i connect the phone to the pc is only available the mass storage option. Also tried with adb commands but doesnt recognize any device using "adb devices".
But in recovery mode, if i select the option "install update from ADB" it does recognize it with the command "adb devices". The status of the device is sideload.
If i try the command to disable the pattern lock it returns error:closed. And also try to find the solution to this error, but nothing seems to work. Tried "adb usb", "adb kill-server" and "adb start-server". Nothing.
I dont know what else to do. Im starting to feel ill, haha.
So the question it would be: what can i do to skip the lock or a way to tun on the wifi mode or... i dont know, please help!!
Thanks to all of you for your time
Cheers!

Edit: i just noticed! i can write the pattern if i find a way to turn the screen upside down, any ideas?
FIXED: i used a program called gsm aladdin. I can use the phone again!

Access phone with broken screen and touchscreen

Hi all,
I wonder if somebody could help me.
At the moment I have a Z5 compact with a broken screen (totally black) and touch. I know it still can boot, because it responds to my fingerprint when booted up. However, it does respond to my finger, but still needs a patern on first boot, which I cannot do on account of the broken touch screen. Also, my computer detects the phone.
I want to access my data, but for that I would have to use the onscreen menu which pops up when I connect the phone with usb. That's impossible.
I looked around on the internet and it is possible to remotely control the screen or access via adb. However, for that I either need to install some app on the phone, enable usb-debugging or authorise access via adb. All of those are impossible.
My phone has un unlocked bootloader and is rooted, so as a last resort I've tried to flash a modified kernel to enable usb debugging by default. This fails. Probably because I make some mistake in modifying the kernel, but I don't know. There's not a lot of response from my phone, as you understand ... Besides, I've absolutely no experience modding myself.
Anybody any idea, please?
So I just fixed the same issue you're having this week. It required opening up the phone.
Basically the ribbon cable that connects the screen to the motherboard had become unseated and needed to be plugged back in for me.
The Z5C isn't the easiest phone to take apart but it's not that difficult either. Just requires some basic tools (Hair dryer, tweezers and some precision screw drivers). There's a bunch of videos showing you how on ifixit or youtube. You just have to go all the way to the part where they flip over the motherboard and unplug the two ribbon cables, one of those two will be the culprit.
This is the first and only phone I've taken apart so any amateur can do this.
Boot to recovery and connect your phone to PC

Yes, actually I've had problems with a broken backlight before and opening the phone and re-adjusting the cable solved that. Not in this case however. Thanks for your suggestion, anyways.

Would recovery provide me with some way to enter my pattern via a PC, e.g. with ADB?
Actually, I'm not sure I had any recovery installed at all. I've tried this before and just tried it again. I press the on/off-button while holding volume down. After that no response whatsoever. My computer does not see any device when connected. I suppose my recovery does not work properly, but without screen I can't be certain.
mlleemiles, you are a _hero_!
After reading your post I decided to try flashing another recovery to try if that might work. Now I can access my files without ever having entered any pattern .
Nevermind that it turns out my files weren't encrypted and I thought they were.
If anyone has a similar problem in the future, this is what worked for me:
My exact situation:
- My phone runs a stock rom (downloaded from XperiCheck) with version 32.4.A.1.54. When my phone was still running ok I had the bootloader unlocked and my device rooted with Rootkernel.
Working solution:
- I downloaded Twrp, version 3.2.1, from this page:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-compact/development/twrp-twrp-3-2-1-z5-compact-t3748952
- Shut down my phone by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it again
- Started my phone in fastboot mode and flashed recovery to my phone with:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery_suzuran_220218_2.img
- Booted my phone in recovery with volume down + on/off-button.
- Connected my phone to my PC, et voila.
Turns out I can also access my phone with ADB as root, so after backing up the entire internal memory, I might try to get some remote screen tool working.
So thanks for the help and if I find something interesting and new, I'll post that too.
Small update:
After successfully flashing Twrp I backed up the internal memory, so must of the important stuff was safe by then.
However, it turned out that my phone now wouldn't boot into anything other then Twrp. I decided to flash my rom again. First I installed my apb keys using Twrp:
Code:
adb push adbkey.pub /data/misc/adb/adb_keys
It turned out I already had usb debugging enabled.
I then flashed my original firmware again, and connected with adb. This time it connected correctly, without me having to click any dialogue on my phone. I fiddled with several remote control Android tools most of which didn't work. Finally, it turned out Vysor does exactly what I want to do. It is a bit unstable, but workable.
Anyways, I've finally managed to copy all the stuff I wanted from my phone.

HUAWEI P9 Lite - deep **** problem - any way to recover data?

Guys, sorry in advance if this question is kind of a duplicate, but really I spent hours here to find some solution.
I am affraid I am in a deep ****, but I need your confirmation, 'cause you are the experts.
Will make it quick and simple.
Model: Huawei P9 lite 2016
Physical Status: damaged black display, not reacting. New display(s) not working at all. Buttons are fine.
Logical status: USB debugging and other stuff is OFF, OTG is even maybe not supported. I was using HiSuite only and I had to everytime manually confirm that I want e.g. FileTrasfer. Noq I can start up the phone (even log in I think thanks to FingerPrint) and HiSuite partition appears (but not the one with data of course).
What I already tried: I installed ADB and FASTBOOT to my PC. I am able to see my phone in FASTBOOT mode only. I am starting the phone with VOL- and insterting USB cable. However due to all the functions like USB debug off, I am not able to finish any task to unlock anyting or to load another image etc. All is forbidden. When running ADB.EXE, no device is found, no matter in which mode I boot up the phone.
Again, I think this is because of disabled USB debugging mode and I have no chance to change it using standard GUI.
Any hint or am I really done?
Thanks a lot.

Question How to access cracked black screen Redmi Note 10

Hello guys.
I have a unique problem here. I have a Redmi Note 10 with a broken black screen. I want to access the phone to be able to backup all my files and if possible to use it with my PC with Vysor or Cast. Because I am still not able to repair the screen right now. And I would also like to have backed up my files before it is repaired.
So I've tried many youtube tutorials to access the phone but it seems none of them can help me because not only can't I see anything on the screen but also I have a very complicated pattern so it is impossible to guess the pattern with a mouse. The screen itself is dead so it doesn't respond to touch.
But I want to believe that I can be able to access my phone because my phone is rooted with Magisk and I'm running a custom rom - Crdroid version 8.9 Android 12. I also have a PC. I am able to get into Crdroid recovery when I press volume up + power button. I am also able to enter into fastboot mode when I press volume down + power button.
I'm stating all this because I want to know if there is any way I can be able to backup my files or access the phone with my laptop. I saw that one can be able to access their phone if Developer Options are turned on. Mine were turned off before the screen broke. Is there any way I can be able to turn them on in my situation?
Please help.
try to boot twrp in fastboot.
fastboot boot twrp.img
i think mtp is activated automatically. problem is if it will ask for the unlock pattern on twrp
Okay

So if I boot into TWRP, the computer will be able to read my files automatically?
i think there is no hope in your state...
complicated screenlock + fully dead screen + developer options turned off
if you had USB Debugging enabled you could use this software to use the phone on the PC like in the picture because i have a phone in the same status like yours but USB Debugging was enabled.
with twrp you can save your internal storage files but it will ask for pattern and you won't be able to access those files without unlocking it.
so i guess the only way is trying to guess the pattern with a mouse... i know that will be really hard but is the only thing i can suggest.
otherwise just take your phone to a repair shop

Okay. I guess I'll just take it to the repair shop then since it's impossible to guess that pattern. Thank you for your reply.
