how do I stop this? I am not even logged on Playstore and all these weird games like solitaire keeps installing on its own.
It's adware triggered by first setup of the stock ROM. I was surprised when I got a US998 that it had all this adware, which was never on my former H932. I guess LG trying to make a few bucks on their phones.
You can you uninstall them. They'll come back if you perform a Factory Reset, but otherwise they'll stay away.

I've never seen this and it's not on my wife's phone, my mother's phone, my sister's phone, my brother in law's phone, nor other friends.
What exactly are you seeing?
Now 30b -- U.S. Cellular Pie -- has games which I had trouble removing on my backup phone. But I've never seen any bloatware or adware on US998 Oreo KDZ. Unless you count social media stuff like Facebook.
It happened on both of the US998 (Frankensteined LS998) which I bought from YYwireless on eBay. Both came with Pie 30b. One I rolled back to Oreo 20h, and it happened again. I did a lot of Factory Reset / Master Reset on this phone trying to solve a modem issue after rolling back to Oreo, and these apps and games reinstall every time I go through first-time setup.
I cannot say why you don't get them. My first thought was it might be tied to the US Cellular 30b firmware, but again, I get it on 20h as well.
Edit: Oh, it's social media as well as games: Wish, Solitaire... at least a dozen apps, most are ones I never heard of. And they are NOT baked into the ROM, but rather downloaded and installed after first setup (thus easy to uninstall). These are in addition to the Facebook and Instagram apps baked into the ROM.

The social media apps, yes. The games, that's strange.
But I never did a clean install from 20h. On all the phones I mentioned, I either updated over the months with TWRP-flashable zip (mine) or through Upgrade mode with KDZ via Dev Patched LGUP (all my friends, family members). Many started with 20c or 20d and then I updated them as LG released KDZ.

I bet that's why: If you were to do a wipe and clean install on 20h, I imagine you would get them too. The only other explanation I can think of is that there are two different variants of 20h, one for US cellular and one pure LG. I forget if I downloaded from LG-Firmwares or from the mirrors in your your thread. But even on LG-Firmwares there is a dozen uploads of it, as I recall. Don't know if anyone eve bothered comparing them.
Edit: The MD5 of my 20h KZ matches the one from your AFH upload. I am downloading from LG-Firmwares now to see if there is a difference. The LG bridge link is broken, so can't check that one.

Also, on my wife's I actually started with Nougat. We both have genuine Open Market USS98. My mother also.
The other people have YYWIRELESS converted LS998. And they started with some early Oreo but were never Bootloader Unlocked.

I just finished downloading one of the 20h KDZs from LG-Firmwares, and it's the same MD5 as your AFH upload. Not a big surprise, I am sure you would have caught if there were two variants floating around.
So yes, I think anyone who does a clean install on 20h or newer will get this adware. My guess is that LG decided to leave the US998 to US Cellular at some point between 20b and 20h, and all new updates pass through them before being released -- and they are the ones inserting some adware to the ROM they get from LG.
I am curious, since you own some genuine Open Market US998s: Did you ever see an OTA offer of 20h? I assume not, since you were already rooted by then. But I am thinking that 20h may be just as much USC as 30b, and we're not going to get any "pure" LG Pie updates no matter how long we wait.

Thank you for replying. How do you fully remove this adware? The first app that mysteriously appeared is called Games(com.dti.folderlauncher) I disabled it in the settings then resorted to uninstalling it via Titanium backup. But the odd thing is that it still manages to install these random games and social media apps. At this point, I don't even know what's installing them all and I don't know what to disable. I mean what package even installed the Games(com.dti.folderlauncher) app in the first place? I have not logged to Google or LG even in the first place. It just installed by itself as soon as i connected to the internet.
I could also confirm that this Games(com.dti.folderlauncher) appears in 20e after my test awhile ago.

The ones I get are just plain apps being downloaded right after setup, even if I don't log in with an account. They're not from Play Store. I can uninstall them easily, either from the apps menu or from the launcher (Nova in my case).
I wonder if you're seeing something else than me: Anything you can Disable has to be a system app (baked into the ROM, still there ready to be enabled). But none of the ones I see are system apps: You uninstall them, and they're gone. That's why I am not overly concerned, just a slight nuisance.
I wish I could remember the exact names of them. If you list more app names, I can confirm if they're the same I saw.

I can uninstall all the apps except the Games app from Digital Turbine, I had to use titanium backup to uninstall it.
The apps that got installed automatically in order: Games(Digital Turbine) Delta Browser, News, Raid, Pandora, News Break, Wish, Pop! Slots, TikTok, SmartNews, Bingo Blitz, Board Kings, King of Avalon, Caesars Slots, Solitaire and Slotmania.
I have another question, do you have an idea why busybox is not working for me? I tried it on 20e and 20h and it shows (no info provided) on magisk. I downloaded it straight from magisk too.
Mobile Services Manager is the nasty little culprit!! Settings/ Apps&Notifications/App Info, you may have to turn on system apps, I have the app disabled for the moment!! :good:

Thank you! I remember seeing that and wondering what it was! What a nasty piece of crap, including its legitimate sounding name. Right out of the spammers playbook. Shame on LG for allowing this.
@noddledizzy: Yes, that's the list of apps. All of them can be uninstalled, then disable that Mobile Services Manager. I don't remember a Games app, but there is a Gaming system app, which is legit and unrelated to these -- although I have no idea what it does.

If you remove it, it would have to be as a TWRP flashable zip, only for rooted users. We cannot create updated KDZs, they're signed and encrypted.
I don't think it's that big a problem: It's only once after clean install, and you just uninstall the downloaded apps and disable Mobile Services Manager.

Most Android phones seem to have it but can be used in nefarious ways by carriers for bloatware. The article recommends you disable it immediately.
I checked and I already have this frozen in Titanium Backup for some reason. Who knows when I did that?

Yes, that's the one.
What's interesting here is that US998 was supposed to NOT be a carrier device, so one expects it to be free from crap like this. Which again leads me to believe that there hasn't been a "pure LG" US998 update since 20e. They're all US Cellular now.
Edit: I used to own a H932, which I am sure didn't have this. To confirm, I just checked my wife's H932 (all stock, not even rooted) and it's not on there. I don't think the article is correct that most Androids have this. Certainly not higher end phones.

I'm one of many people experiencing issues with the Moto Z (Force) move to Nougat. In doing so, I have choppy audio, tinny sound, popping and crackling as well. When contacting Verizon, they claim that nobody else is complaining about this to a point where their company is notifying its CS reps with a resolution. When contacting Lenovo/Motorola, they claim that they've received a ton of complaints since the Nougat release, and suggested that I bring the phone back for a swap since I had only just purchased it. I did just that, and followed their additional instruction for not updating to Nougat. The only problem is that the freakin thing downloads automatically while on wifi within a day and no way to prevent it that I know of. Now I have this aggressive attempt of the OTA management to get me to start the process. I don't want to, but neither do I want to manage having to ignore this update every day, nor do I want to accidentally initiate the process. I'm looking for a bit of help.
I thought that if I disabled the Motorola OTA service that it wouldn't push. But it did push even though I stopped the service under developer options. And even now that it pushed, I hoped not to get the message, but there it is. And since I don't want to root yet, I can't clear the space in cache where the update is to prevent it from updating accidentally. I'm looking for the names of any other Moto services that might be related to the OTA that I can disable to prevent this from happening. I don't mind factory defaulting my phone and starting over to clear their cache, but once the update actually executes, I'm hosed with crappy audio again. My wife has the same phone and we have one day to get her a new one for free within our return period. We like the phone, do not want to get a different brand, and hope that we can find a solution to this. Again, I want to do this without rooting.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Hi,
I myself greenified the app called "Motorola-Updateservices", package name is com.motorola.ccc.ota, apk name is 3c_ota.apk
Since then I never had another notification that nougat is available and I didn't search for updates either of course.

About to download and try it out. If it works, I'll be back in a couple days to report. If it doesn't, I'll be back sooner. Thank you for the suggestion.
Also, if you can provide any specific configurations to manage the OTA, I'm at your disposal.
SuD
PS I won't be searching for updates either, but I will be bugging Lenovo/Motorola to find out when the bug is fixed.
I'm rooted, have xposed and the donation version of the app.
As the OTA app is a system app you can't greenify it without having xposed installed and the donation package of Greenify.
Try to just disable the app with the normal app manager.

It worked on 6.01 but no longer on 7.0. If you debloat on 6.01 and take the OTA to 7.0 everything you've debloated stays that way unless you do a factory reset.
for some reason google took away the ability to use the adb commands in 7.0
Almost like they want us to be stuck with bloat lol.

I just tried it and I get some permission error. So it seems after the Dec patch it no longer works on '6.
I have Moto Z Play -1.
any suggestions for someone who might have accidentally downloaded the system update, but hasn't installed it yet? It makes me nervous, having that "new system software is downloaded and ready to install" message b/c I know one day I'll probably accidentally click on it and there won't be a way to go back.
I am a Z play owner.
By installing Z (not play) apps I believe I have disabled the OTA. But I have no nagging update to test it's functionality on.
To my point, if this does work then the reverse should work also.
I will up my apps if anyone want to try it.

Same as me on my z play.
The last patch did this.
I keep getting an error whenever someone sends me a picture message, saying the message was not downloaded, tap to retry. Tapping to retry does nothing, and then I'll get the same error notification several times a day, until I just go and delete the failed picture download. In many or all cases tho, the picture actually does download. I'm on T-Mobile but haven't had this error for years on several different phones..... just the Tmo V30. Anyone else?
I'm getting the same thing on my T-Mobile V30+ is super annoying. I have no idea what is causing it.

I had disabled Android Pay for some reason, so i went ahead and re-enabled it. I had only used the settings within the phone to do that tho. Do you think it could be something like that?

No, disabling Android Pay by using settings in the phone wouldn't cause that issue with texts.
The only reason I'm asking if because a few times when people have complained about stuff not working -- like Always On Display and other things -- turns out they used package disabler or ADB (using the same vague package disabler descriptions) to disable/remove what they thought was "bloatware" but was really stuff they wanted to work.
Or caused severe lag, because the phone apparently looks for what's missing before giving up. It's ironic people are slowing their own phones down...
1) a lot of things are interconnected.
2) true bloatware isn't labelled "this is useless", with important stuff labeled "this is important".
Right now there's a case where a guy and his wife both have T-Mobile LG V30, on T-Mobile with the same plan, same exact firmware. But one has VoLTE grayed out while the other doesn't, and one dialer doesn't show voicemail icon while the other does. He used the package disabler to disable some services and apps, but we don't know why they're different if he disabled the same things? He also doesn't know what to re-enable to get everything back.
But it sounds like that's not the reason in your case.

Right now there's a case where a guy and his wife both have T-Mobile LG V30, on T-Mobile with the same plan, same exact firmware. But one has VoLTE grayed out and one dialer doesn't show voicemail icon while the other does. He used the package disabler to disable some services and apps, but we don't know why they're different if he disabled the same things? He also doesn't know what to re-enable to get everything back.
But it sounds like that's not the reason in your case.

Yes, gotcha. I've kinda been there, done that haha. In the past. These days I don't do much to my phone, just let it be and work like normal. Well, hopefully it works anyway
Same issue on T-Mobile v30+.... sometimes MMS/photos fail and offers "retry" only to fail again.... doesn't happen all the time....usually on 5 or more mb images.
What's strange is that it seems like I sometimes get the picture AND a failed message. Like if somebody sends me two pictures, I'll get the two pictures and two failed messages. So I'll I wonder if maybe they sent me four pictures, but when I ask they tell me they sent me two. Weird
YrrchSebor said:
I keep getting an error whenever someone sends me a picture message, saying the message was not downloaded, tap to retry. Tapping to retry does nothing, and then I'll get the same error notification several times a day, until I just go and delete the failed picture download. In many or all cases tho, the picture actually does download. I'm on T-Mobile but haven't had this error for years on several different phones..... just the Tmo V30. Anyone else?

I was not able to receive any mms messages until I added my phone number in the advanced tab of the stock messaging app.
If you haven't tried this, maybe it's worth a shot.

It's a carrier locked phone from Claro latin America. They seem to be using mostly stock google apps except for the dialer. Gallery and music have both LG and Google versions.. I have not used any other V30 so I thought all other carrier versions were the same.

Same thing here
Hey all. I have had the same issue from the first week I got both my V30's and I am on T-Mobile as well. I went to the store and they tried every troubleshooting step they could and tried every combination of settings. I am using the stock messaging app and even with a third party google messages app, it still happens so I think it's a T-Mobile issue. They had tech support call me which was not very helpful because they tried doing the same steps the store did and I should mention I worked for Verizon Tech for ten years so I kind of know my way around a phone. I went and completed a master reset and restored nothing at all, and it still happened. I changed the sim like T-Mobile said and still the same. I connected my phone to my PC and used LG software upgrade and repair tool after the new software was available and still the same. Went back to the store and they are going to send me a warranty replacement even though it is happening on both my phones. T-Mobile is not acknowledging this issue and if this warranty replacement has the same problem, I will take it to the next step and report it to the BBB.
Any updates? Having same issues. Changed sms to mms and vice versa but still no change. Picture messages fail to download regardless of size even at 900 kb. People say they get my messages 5-10 minutes after I send to them. My group messages seem to be on a huge delay in receiving and sending.

Hello ladies and gentlemen of this forum. Firstly I'd like to say the availability of substratum has made this less painful I do not like being unrooted and locked out if my bootloader. I desperately Miss my V4A ARISE SOUND. After leading Verizon and going to Sprint because I can get four unlimited phones for the cost one or two at VZW. I had a Motorola Z2 and it was bootloader unlocked and I had Viper audio And root but I turned it into a paper weigh when trying to take oreo update. The whole A/B partition was very new to me so now I have this V30 plus.
Has anybody discovered a great sound mod or work around that is compatible with YouTube and Google play music?
I got an app called power amp and it works great for anything in my library it sounds amazing Poweramp is a great app with many features and great sound adjustment.
I'm looking for any kind of hack or non root modification or application that will allow me to have great sound quality all through the device.
Thank you for your help and support LG is new to me I was very big on the Nexus 6 and Nexus 6p forums. I feel a little handcuffed now.
Thank you for any direction or idea!!!
I know right, and it would be awesome if we could use convolvers (.irs profiles) outside of viper4android.
Yeah no kidding, I actually unzipped an ARISE FILE AND INSTALLED arkamys but I cannot tell if it makes too much of a difference the file below Works only for Google Play music but it's pretty awesome Dolby Digital I cleared my data for Google Play Music then installed this file then you reboot don't open the file whatever you do. After the reboot go into the menu of Google Play Music tap on equalizer and Dolby will pop up and it sounds really really good... MAKE SURE ALL FACTORY SOUND MODS ARE DISABLED.
If you like Google play music this works great man

I've tried it, and I have to say I feel like it's nothing special. I find the poweramp's 10 step equalizer much more useful and powerful. If it worked system wide it would be cool, but I'm not impressed right now.
Yeah Poweramp is a lot cooler I just thought I'd post anyhow. There's a lot of settings in Poweramp I found some that control gain and if you mess with it a bit and then close the app then open YouTube I was able to get it to control you tube... It's pretty sweet they give you a trial offer that long I'll end up buying it
Day 1 with this phone and no root. Ahhhhhhhh. Withdrawl. I removed the bloatware and got substratum working but I'm missing my magisk and viper4android bad. Not sure I can handle this. Did just read on another thread that a root exploit might be happening and this time people will want the sprint version. Imagine that. Hope it happens. Its a cool phone eithet way. But could be so much more. Like with Ressurection Remix!

Well, it's not that people WANT the Sprint version. Any version except T-mobile will do for this exploit. It's better if you already have a US998 or H930. It's just the Sprint version is dirt cheap on used market because no one else wants locked down Sprint phones. This method not only carrier unlocks the phone but also bootloader unlocks and roots them. If you absolutely need Sprint, then you can flash Sprint modems and firmware back if wish.
I picked up two mint V30+ for $325 and $350, and I already own an open market US998 V30+, but the price is too good and I will keep them as converted US998.
US998 firmware works fine on Sprint. Just need to flash modem from recovery using adb. You need to add the apns but that's about it. I did edit the build.prop because the notification drop-down was showing roaming indicator off. I changed ro.build.target_operator=NAO to ro.build.target_operator=USC so drop-down will show sprint. You CAN change to ro.build.target_operator=SPR (but it will lock your apns so edit what you need before changing to this) all is well even have the Sprint lte bands
I was using the Sprint stock rom but switched to US998 rom as there is no carrier bloat. They seem very similar anyways
Here is the proper apns for Sprint. The previous post forgot to include mms.
how were you able to input dun,

this update (V30 to pie, recieved today) just destroyed all of my home screen configurations (folders, arrangements, widgets, links to websites) -> really annoying.
Also my navigation bar cannot be set to black anymore -> any help?
system seems very laggy, hope that sorts after all app updates are through.
this is not a nice expierence.

From what I noticed, the navigation bar can be set black with a black theme, however, it still becomes white in certain apps (eg. Chrome).
I didn't see a way to make it black universally.

After a big update like from Oreo to Pie is always very advisable to factory reset the phone. You'll be surprised.

surprised of how awfull it is to restore an android phone?
there are so many apps (like home banking) that are linked to the phone and cannot be backed up... I try to avoid that. But I guess it is time to switch to Samsung S10 soon was hoping to wait a little longer till the prices go down.....
but the pie update also seems to drain my battery even faster. what a mess

Well, the battery drain is just another reason to factory reset and it's kinda ironic that you'll have to set your new phone anyway.I told you to factory reset because I solved a lot of problems on my phones through the years after major updates. It's not mandatory but very advisable. At the end it's your phone and your will to do it and set it again.

it is probably what I have to d. but it sure makes it easier to move away from a 15 month old phone.... I just didn't expect LG pushing me away. I was loyal for some time, and I really think this is one of the most beautiful phones of its time; but it sure does not perform well (anymore).
is there any "small" cache reset that will not delete everything?
in case it is interesting for someone:
Last SOT test from a few days ago (before the update) was 4:45 with normal use, mostly indoors, which is not great, but good enough, since I use my phone alot and sometimes charge 2-3 times a day.
will try a regular test with pie in a few days, but I am too busy to have it under similar conditions...

a clean install is actually difficult; (as well as to switching to other brand phones)
- my messaging apps loose all there messages (some have manual backup)
- banking apps loose there unique keys -> need to be reauthorized with the bank
- two factor auth apps need to carefully be restored
...
of course if you have a few plain games that are cloud synced, this does not matter; but if you actually use the phone it is not so easy to restore all data; (especially ensuring that nothing of importance gets lost)
I will go as far as wipe cache partition i/o factory reset. Every phone has it flaws at some point.
sure.
its just bad that there is not a streamlined backup method; LGs "mobile switch" is a mess, and gets stuck regularly on messaging apps with many files(?)
best results with preinstalled apps was actually with Huawei/honor; they seem to work quite well (but I don't like there aggressive power management)
I don't like to reset a phone before I have everything setup in a different phone (2 factor etc...) because I would hate to loose data and money.
so now I either get a cheap crap phone; or another LGV30 (cheap as hell at the moment, but getting old), or a new samsung, which I didn't plan on before autumn and new phones released....

I had the same struggles you have.
Ultimately I had to give up and switch back to Android Messenger. It backs up all messages. For 2-factor authentication I use Authy so it can restore my codes from the cloud. But you are correct, I use Android on my Chromebook and setup a 2nd two factor method (email) in my accounts before I reset my phone. I'm annoyed by games, I had to restart so many already even though Google Play Games promises to save the progress. Hope you find another way.

This is pretty much mandatory on any device. When flashing a new OS zip in TWRP, it's always a clean install. 7-8 and 8-9.
Even if not rooted and take an OTA, you either have to let the update settle or just factory reset. I've seen MANY people throughout the years on XDA complain about the newest OS version.
The general reply will always be factory reset.

I noticed that the PIE update fixed issues with the camera; that pictures would not get saved, when closing the app (too fast) after taking a picture.

And we told you to stop doing that. The fix for that was to leave the camera open in the background, until the camera finished its process.

You are misinformed because pretend this is a new phone you are setting up.
How would you go about that? You would use the same two factor authentication on the new phone. You can't say two factor authentication wouldn't work on new phone or nobody could ever get a new phone...
Plus, there are SMS Backup and restore apps. WhatsApp has cloud backup if you turn it on Many messaging apps like Hangouts sync across different devices.
If you're rooted, there's TWRP and Titanium Backup -- where you can restore data to ALL apps.

1) I use Nova launcher and periodically export configuration backups to Gmail or Google Drive. You can also store them on your device, like microSD card. At any point in time, on this phone or another, then you can download and restore those home screens/desktops. I have 5 screens with apps arranged by most use (home screen), spreading out then by categories.
2) A little too late now, but Google also makes backups of your home screen configuration and when you Factory Reset your phone or buy a new phone, and you first sign in, Google will ask if you wish to restore that most recent configuration remembered from your most recent device. However, by this point in time, Google has now backed up the "new" Pie configuration you do not want. This is why you should have factory reset at the very beginning.

If it downloads the update clearing the system cache should purge I've been told but not tested it!
More than one way to skin a kat.
If you're rooted use one of the rooted apk blockers; I have very little knowledge in that area.
You can block the update app with ADB if you want.
Karma Firewall can be use to block the app itself from internet access, Karma uses almost no battery, freeware, an excellent apk. Can be set to run at bootKate.
Your carrier can also disable them on their end if it's a carrier phone.
I use Package Disabler on my 10+ to block the garbage. Use the none Samsung phone version.
Home - Package Disabler
The only NON-root solution that let’s you disable any unwanted packages that come pre-installed / installed with your phone / tablet.
www.packagedisabler.com
Updates break phones.
Rule #1 if your device is running fast, stable and fulfilling its mission... let it be!
I'm still running on Pie. My current OS load is over a year old, still fast and stable in spite of heavy usage. Very low maintenance.
Security is generally just not an issue unless you do something stupid with Pie and above.
As course there is no saving dumb bunnies... even with the latest updates
do you know how i can block it in ADB?

I don't use it. There are tutorials here though.
There are a bunch of system managers for rooted phones that should lock it down.
This one does I think:
Autostarts - Apps on Google Play
Keep control over your phone: See what applications do behind your back.

i will give it a shot. There's an option to block updates?

In developer options is a toggle for automatic updates. Turn it off.
With that deactivated, it'll give you a notification prompt about new updates, but won't force the update like it usually does when you reboot your phone.

Yeah if you can flip it off in Developer options that is sweet.
Google Services also pushes updates, and last night it managed to get through - usually it whines there is an update, and even if I let it, it crashes... figured no worries then. Well... it (or something, every other OTA service and option is off that I found) made it through and unrooted me last night.
See https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...can-meet-up-with-a-terrible-accident.4281293/ for OP
Luckily, bootloader still unlocked, updated to latest TWRP and reflashed Magisk and all seems to be OK.
Reflashing stock 14.0.11 gives a bunch of loop errors, working on that.
Anyway methinx time to get rid of G/S and replace with the Gapps version....
