My Google Maps blue dot has a pretty wide beam, and when I first start Maps it never seems to know which direction I'm facing until after moving 50ft or so.
I learned about the method to calibrate the compass by tapping the blue dot, selecting calibrate compass, and doing a figure-8 motion 3 times. However, it never changes out of "low" no matter how many times I've attempted it.
Additionally, Google Maps speedometer always shows 0 or --.
I have a new Samsung A50 Verizon with all the latest updates.
Is there any way to find out whether my compass hardware might be bad, or any other suggestions on what I might be doing wrong? I currently drive for a living using rideshare/delivery apps, so this is extremely frustrating for me.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm not sure if the A50 has the edge app.. If it does you can try installing the "tools" app. It has a compass and at the bottom there is an option to calibrate. This works for me.
For some reason calibrating the compass from Google Map Doesnt with for me.

What is the edge app? Who is the publisher of the app? Seemed too broad of a search on the Play Store

It's edge panel.. Part of the functions of the phone. I'm not too sure if it's included in A series but it is present on s and note series..

OK so this is completely new to me. My current location for weather has changed. Any ideas? It almost looks like Arabic text, however the location weather is correct. Any ideas? Driving me crazy.

i would try rebooting, if that doesnt help maybe turn on gps and fiddle with maps until you get a location for yourself then re-sync the weather.

tried it all man. I've rebooted, restored various roms and they all switch to that as my location, tried maps too. no dice on anything.
like i said, the weather condition and temps are correct.....UGH!
I think it looks like its from around Indonesia or Malaysia? Maybe your phone thinks you are on vacation in Kuala Lumpur
Hah well glad I know what locale my phone thinks I'm at. Driving me crazy though. Between this and my new found poor bluetooth A2DP streaming I think I may be heading towards a replacement phone.
In case this comes up with others, it's a bug with VZW's location services. Make sure to not have that turned on. HTC apparently acknowledges this bug with their weather widget and the service. Google and GPS are fine to use.

Following up more. I'm rooted and this only seems to be affecting custom ROMs. Stock sense does not have this problem. Not positive now what this is, but it is still happening.
Having the same issue on my phone. Running Bamf 1.3 and the 1.76ghz kernel and apparently my phone things i'm in Iceland, when i'm really in Florida lol. Weird as heck bug.
Hey Guys,
Its a great application landing to NOTE 2
Most people make do with a PIN or pattern lock to secure their Android devices. If you need something a little stronger (or just want to feel like Ethan Hunt) EyeVerify has just released the beta version of an app that uses honest-to-goodness eye scans. Eyeprint takes a photo of your face, then matches the pattern of blood vessels on your eyeballs to a previous photo to access locked apps.

Technically, Eyeprint isn't using the classic retina scan to grant access - that would require a small amount of infrared light to illuminate the membrane at the back of the eye. It uses the same principle of amazingly unique vein patterns, but it picks them up from the corners of your eyes. Users need a front-facing camera of at lest 2 megapixels. To create the baseline, you'll have to follow the instructions while using the rear camera, looking to the far left and right to let the camera pick up the veins on your eyes. After that, a quick scan of your eyes looking left and right from the front-facing cam should do the trick.
EyeVerify hopes to expand its services to other developers on Android and iOS through an SDK. At present, the app can only lock other apps - you can't actually unlock your phone with an eye scan. (There's a quick "lock all" option for the truly paranoid.) Early feedback from the Play Store indicates that it's very efficacious, so hopefully more devices will be enables as the beta program continues. The Eyeprint App Lock Beta is free to try for 30 days.
Play store link
looks promising..
Anyone have the apk? google says not compatible with note 8, I say 'let me try'

Hello everybody,
i noticed an issue this morning with google plus.
As i think you know, latitude is going to disappear and i activated the location share on google plus.
But when i go into local, i can see all my friends sharing their positions, but the map doesn't show... as a matter of fact, i see icons on a empty display.
I tried to reboot, to clear cache and dalvik, also to remove and re-install google plus app, but nothing changed... have you some idea? what kind of problem is this?
Thanks,
Claudio

Hello Diablo67,
thanks for your answer.
But in this case, i should have also some problem with maps and latitude, don't i? But maps and latitude, they work fine
Moreover, my position in Google+ is good, i am tracked well... just my icon is on a blank screen, without any map under it

same here. are you also using maps beta? the new maps preview ?
The workaround for the problem is to make Google+ a system app.
I had the same problem before and it helped me.

Thanks for the link. I have an interesting issue with my HTC one: everytime I make Google+ a system app everything is gone (app & libs) after the reboot. It doesn't matter how I copy / move the files: adb, ESExplorer or Titanium: after the reboot the files under /system/app & /system/libs are gone.
Struggling to get Redmi Note 9 Pro to store my Google Maps history.
I used to have it quite smooth in Samsung A8 and other devices, but here I only get a couple dots connected with straight lines. Mostly these points are from the moments when I unlock the phone. Locked phone doesn't allow G-Maps to get the history right.
Some exclusions: when I use Maps navigation, timeline stored is very precise.
What I have tried:
- "lock" maps in task switcher
- set permissions for Maps, services, other location-related apps - to "Allow while in use" or "Allow always" (when this option is accessible)
- disable batter-saving for these apps
- share my live location permanently to my friend through Google Maps. He can see the location, but at the same time no history/timeline stored in a smooth way.
What I would like: have the Timeline with much more details stored.

Same problem here. Very annoying!
My workaround is using http://gpslogger.app and letting it locate once per minute and upload the data to my Google drive. Thus location timeline becomes reasonable accurate.

How much battery drain does this cause? (How much more battery life would you get if you disabled this)?

Hard to tell as I'm very much confined to my home at the moment and only leave for some hours. Whenever I let the phone just rest on the table, It doesn't even locate or send the location. The other problem (random freezes and reboots) didn't happy any more since I set my 2nd sim card to 3G.
Hi all,
Need some help on the compass app. I a not able to calibrate the Compass. Calibration will start but after some minutes it seems to drop the data and start to circle and shows in all directions but not to the north. I am on the actual C.16 version in Germany. Any ideas ? I already cleared all data and cache from the compass app.
Regards
Flummi
Can you make a video recording of the screen how it behaves?
here the video
Try the calibration outside, I didn't use the compass application, I had it disabled, if it looks like it works
Spoiler: Video

Has the compass also stabilized?
I got the same problem, when using gmaps, walking it works perfect at start but suddently it shows wrong direction and if i reset the navigation and start it right away it works again but later on gets crazy again... Must be software related...
PS: im on latest eu rom
On my gt2 pro calibration does nothing. So the compass app does not even start. Also gdpr version of the phone.
The manual test is not a calibration, it is a test of the Magnetic Sensor. If the value is stable in the manual test and the needle flies in the compass application, then the problem is with the compass application.
