Hey guys,
I think this is my first post on XDA
I have a UK H850, with TWRP and SuperSU and stock ROM. I have a very early version, something like version b.
Anyway, my reason for posting is I would like to update my firmware version because it is a year old to the latest version, or a custom ROM. I have looked around and I cannot seem to find a definitive answer on weather I can use flashfire app to successfully update and automatically reroot the device. If this does not work, what other methods can I look at? TWRP flash? Will I be able to keep my current data or will I have to restore from titanium backup?
Thanks :good:

Updating your firmware should be fairly easy with LGUP. (I've done it successfully several times with my UK H850.) Just find the KDZ files for your UK H850 here: https://lg-firmwares.com/lg-h850-firmwares/ If you're going to flash Nougat firmware, make sure you have the latest TWRP: twrp-3.1.1-0-h850. After flashing stock firmware you'll have a stock G5, which means no root and stock recovery. (I don't believe there is any way to retain root when flashing stock firmware.) The good news is that after flashing stock firmware your bootloader will still be unlocked, so you can flash twrp-3.1.1-0-h850 with fastboot and then reroot by flashing SU with TWRP. You have correctly deduced that retaining your data will require separate action on your part. And don't forget that if you want to remove encryption on your data you'll need to format (not wipe) the data partition in TWRP.
Good luck!

EE. The latest firmware I've flashed is H85020d_00_EEO_GB_OP_0403.kdz. I'm using the G5 in the US with a SIM card accessing the AT&T network, so I have deleted the EE bloatware that came with it. I bought it, of course, since it was a European H850 with an unlockable boootloader.

Have you successfully unlocked the bootloader on the ee variant of the h850?? If so I guess you could also flash other networks ROMs and also lineage os right?

Yes, the bootloader on the EE H850 is unlockable. I wound up with the EE H850 by chance; I was ordering a "European version" of the H850 online for the express purpose of getting one with an unlockable bootloader. I have been able to flash all LG KDZ firmware on it with LGUP, and have successfully flashed TWRP via fastboot and then rooted it. I've never had a problem flashing any ROMS, although I admit that I haven't tried all the custom ROMs out there. I prefer stock ROMs such as Fulmics 3.5 for the LG camera.
I haven't seen anything posted yet, but noticed that an update for the US997 was added yesterday (Nov 8) on lg-firmwares. I tried to see if I could get the update through LG Bridge, but it says I'm on the current version (15a). The update is still 7.X, and listed at 2.71G.
Has anyone successfully installed the update? If so, what is included in the update? TIA!
I just went to the LG Firmwares page https://lg-firmwares.com/lg-us997-firmwares/#firmwaresList and am downloading the 16a kdz. I'll flash it once it's downloaded. I'll reinstall twrp and root then I'll check out any differences.
Edit: The install went a little rough. I thought I wasn't going to be able to get twrp installed but I got it. Rerooted and all is well. It seems snappier. The camera seems faster too. But it's largely the same.

Yes.
Back up all your stuff first. You can use tibu or LG back up tool.
You'll have to reinstall twrp and reroot as well.
You should retain your unlocked bootloader.

It should but I'm not 100% sure as I have never used it. I use tibu.
But if you have twrp you can back up data that way too.

The person isn't rooted so neither Titanium or TWRP will be of any use.
You can use ADB and use the backup command.
That will get you about as close as you can get. unfortunately, if a device isn't rooted, backup kind of sucks.
Finally got around to updating. I used LGUP and Uppercut to flash the kdz. I chose the upgrade option and it did not wipe my data. Can't really tell any difference so I'm not sure what the update was for.

It will put you on early Oreo Sprint firmware with stock recovery. You can then take all the OTAs back to current firmware. However you will still have unlocked bootloader.
(The only way you can lock bootloader is to flash to firmware with fastboot flash commands, like US998. And then leave it there.)
____
Just to emphasize... Without TWRP and root, Sprint will again own your phone. You can't install wonderful stuff like Anxious V30 mod.
You'll no longer be able to make and restore TWRP backups nor Titanium Backup.
Thanks Chazz...I also donated to you
I have a stock US998 V30+ that is currently on Nougat. I am wanting to use LGUP to update to the latest version of stock Oreo. I am new to rooting and custom Android firmware, so I have a couple of questions about backups and firmware before I take the plunge.
1. I will probably eventually go to a custom firmware, but I would like to stay on stock right now. My plan is to upgrade to the most current version of Oreo through LGUP, create a backup there, downgrade to pre-July 2018 Oreo to unlock the bootloader and root, and then finally restore my backup of current stock Oreo. Would this allow me to root my phone and get the latest version of stock Oreo without losing my current phone data and apps?
2. Can I flash straight from Nougat to Oreo 20h? I saw in this post that it is recommended to flash 20e-20h individually through TWRP after root, but I wasn't sure if that applied to upgrading directly to 20h through LGUP.
3. Is it possible for me to create a full system backup of my Oreo install on stock before I root? I would essentially like to take an image of my OS and reload it after I root and wipe my phone.
Thanks in advance!

For bootloader, no need to update from Nougat to LATEST Oreo (20h), to then have to DOWNGRADE back to what you (temporarily) need for bootloader unlock and root (20a or 20b). Instead update to what you need for bootloader unlock and root (US998 20a or 20b), THEN update to 20h afterwards.

You can flash straight to Oreo 20h from Nougat, but if you need 20a or 20b FIRST for bootloader unlock, why would you waste effort doing it? That's having to backtrack.

Not before you root, no. That's something like TWRP or Titanium Backup does. When you unlock your bootloader your phone will be Hard Reset. Even AFTER that, you will purposely re-format your entire Data partition as part of the TWRP installation steps.
Having said that, Google DOES make backups of your apps and settings (if you have that option enabled) in the Cloud, and when you switch phones or make major updates like this (which is essentially a "new" phone), Android asks if you wish to "restore" the most recent history of apps and settings if possible. Say yes, have a good Wi-Fi connection, sit back and relax -- and all your apps and settings will restore.
After you go through all this, in TWRP yes you can then make a backup (RECOMMENDED!) for future use. In fact, you should always have a recent backup stored, just in case. You can also use Titanium Backup to make backups of all apps and data.

Ok that makes more sense. Thank you for clearing that up. My main reason for the suggestion about backtracking was because I thought that it might allow me to keep my current setup and data if I was already on Oreo to make a backup before unlocking the bootloader. It appears that won't be an option though.
Does flashing a stock kdz through LGUP without rooting format the device?

Depends on which LGUP option you use. Upgrade keeps data. Refurbish or Partition DL of all partitions does not. There are times you HAVE to do that.
You can plug in your phone to PC and transfer off any files you wish -- music, pictures, video, etc. Save as much stuff as you can, then transfer back later.

Great, I will probably do that. Thank you for your help on this thread and on all of the other V30 tutorials and topics!
I have an unlocked AT&T V30 H931 that I've been using on Verizon with a stock Verizon Oreo ROM. I got a prompt this morning saying System Update 14 was ready to install, so I accepted the update. It proceeded to update until it got stuck on the white Verizon boot screen with the animated dots. I left it here for a while in case it would eventually make it past this, but I gave up after 90 minutes.
I can reboot, go to download mode, bring up the recovery menu, reset, choose safe mode - none of these change anything. Whenever I try to boot, it just hangs at that screen. I've tried using LGUP to revert to the Oreo ROM I had, but I get an error with that. To top it all off, my brothers have the same phones and ROMs and they're in the same boat I'm in after accepting this update.
So, what can I do at this point? I thought maybe I could install Pie via LGUP, but I haven't been able to find a place to download the appropriate files from.
Use newer Dev Patched LGUP that can handle Pie (some stuff changed before aborting, so you may have partial Pie).
Go into Download mode manually, Refurbish to most recent Oreo KDZ.
Master Reset.
See Instructions in post #3 of this thread, about downgrading to Oreo...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/development/vs996-lg-v30-vs99630a000704arb00-kdz-t3952254
Use the newer Dev Patched LGUP from that thread. Uninstall any prior version. Read the installation instructions.
______
Then wait for Verizon VS996 Pie KDZ to be released publicly.
Use same newer Dev Patched LGUP to install that, when available.
Great, it's working with the dual mode LGUP. Thanks!
Do you know why the OTA upgrade didn't work? I haven't had any trouble with previous OTAs, but of course this one is installing Pie.

Glad you recovered!
You aren't the only one who got bit by this. There's another thread going with almost same circumstances. Originally I thought he tried to install OTA with TWRP custom recovery still installed, but he was full VS996 stock (from US998), and he knows what he's doing.
No, I don't know why -- but I'm very distrustful of any partial image OTA updates. Learned that from Droid Turbo forum. I always prefer to manually flash full image, as it gives me more control.
Full image Pie KDZ for VS996 should be released publicly any day now.

Ok, I see. I'm making a mental note to wait for KDZ releases in the future.
One more question: my brother's phone, which has the same issue, has data on its internal storage that he hasn't backed up. Is there any way to downgrade without having to wipe the internal storage or perform a reset?

Probably won't work, but using Dev Patched LGUP he can TRY to use "Upgrade" mode to go back to most recent Oreo. It's not really Upgrade but if successful, it would keep his data.
If that doesn't work, then he needs to use Refurbish mode.
You're lucky, I lost download mode and the ability to LGUP and kdz. I've never had any problems using an OTA update when on stock firmware but I sure as hell learned my lesson. I feel sorry for those poor people that don't understand these issues and just take an OTA update because they don't know any better and lose features on their phones. Perhaps ignorance is bliss.

Yeah, on stock Verizon firmware, update restarted the phone, booted to a failed update screen, then back to the normal OS. But I don't see my unlocked bootloader warning screen anymore, and when I tried to use LGUP, I found I didn't have download mode anymore, so currently unable to flash any kdz.

You still have unlocked bootloader, but Verizon firmware doesn't have unlocked bootloader warning.
Some people in the past would flash parts of Verizon KDZ to get rid of the annoying bootloader unlock warning. But that's dangerous to mix and match.

He Frankensteined to full stock VS9996 to see the Verizon Pie OTA. It didn't successfully install. He somehow lost Download mode and doesn't have fastboot flash commands -- since he's on VS996 firmware.
He DOES still have unlocked bootloader, but it can't do any good without being able to Frankenstein back to US998. He needs Download mode for that, to use Dev Patched LGUP.
If someone can capture the OTA .up file, couldn't that be installed with LGUP in FOTA mode? If the update succeeds, it should restore LAF.
I understand that's what H932 users who lost their LAF do to restore it. Haven't tried it myself, just pointing it out. Check the H932 lafsploit root thread for details.
Heck, try updating with LG Bridge. If it works, great, otherwise it should at least provide the OTA file. Again, as I understand, haven't tried myself
Edit: Even better, don't try to install the Pie update, but rather install the last security update with LGUP FOTA mode, if you can find the OTA file. Again, that's what H932 users do to restore a lost LAF partition.
