Can't stop phone from contacting google - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I'm using several non-root samsung devices (S8, S9, S10, S20) and I've been removing everything google related. On purpose, I've removed many features/services (NFS, GPS, etc) and I only want them to act as normal phones. I also test them to see how they behave when connected to a wifi, to see if they try to connect to a remote system. Based on my limited testing, the phones use amazon AWS to get version information for samsung updates.
Unfortunately, the S10 and S20 also constantly connect to google at
172.217.169.164:443
216.58.206.163:80
But I can't figure out which packages are to blame. So far, I've uninstalled everything related to google (framework, play store, services, apps, etc). Anyone knows how to figure out which apps are trying to communicate to google?
Thank you.
PS:
here is my blacklist, in case anyone wants to take a look:
https://gitlab.com/samcleaner/samcleaner/-/blob/master/assets/blacklist.json

I have reason to believe that the package "com.sem.factoryapp" is the one constantly accessing 172.217.x.x.
Still not sure about the other IP address, but if pointed to by a browser it comes up with google.com search page.

Hi mate , in my case I installed netguard to block the Google stuff from accessing the internet,,,
I have a question since you published this script you may have some knowledge about adb :
Can we backup a non rooted phone's settings using ADB ?
I want to backup all my settings in the settings app, and the debloated apps as well, because it's a real hassle to go all over from the start if we reset the phone.

@Maybeyou using recovery mode, you can backup user data, it backup all your apps, 2FA apps, settings, etc.. even sd card encryption key in case it's encrypted or you use the extended internal memory option using sd card on android 6
it will generate several high size files on your sd card, and you'll be able to restore you data using the restore function
next time, open your own thread though.

Of course you can backup a phone by means of ADB: this has the advantage the backup gets stored on your PC's disk space - you define the location., whereas Android's stock recovery allows you to backup the phone only to a SDHC-card inserted what must have a storage capacity of >= phone's internal storage size.

Install and run Network Connections app to see what apps are connecting to the Internet: app is free-of-charge & available off Google Play Store

Sorry bro for asking my question here in your thread, I still don't know how to backup settings and the debloated apps :
In the non rooted Samsung with android 9 stock recovery, there's "apply update from adb" options and it says " adb sideload" when selected , but I don't know what to do from adb on PC, and another option " apply update from sd card" . Is that what you referring to by using recovery? Can you show me how to proceed please
sorry again for asking here

Thank you very much sir, I did a duckduckgo search yesterday ? but didn't found anything useful
Anyway thank you , I'm gonna try to backup right now ?

Update after backing up my non rooted Samsung by using " Adb backup -apk all -shared .....".
I had to reset my phone so I tried " adb restore backup.adb " it didn't restored my debloated version of the firmware, it only restored the apps that I did install + medias like photos and videos .
Is there any solution for that deprecated command ?

this is getting annoying, just flashed lpD from scratch and yet again its happening again, what the hell is downloading here
Use other network monitoring apps like 3g watchdog and check the showing informations is correct.
also you can check with your Network provider, whether this truely happens or not.
Are you allowing google to sync your account? It may be downloading all your apps in the background (Or updating them)
I never tick any of the options after flashing/when setting the phone up...no background downloads
If it was me, I would be paranoid and think that somebody was hacking into my phone

err...why?
Sounds like your Play store updating your apps in the background. Put data or wifi on and open play store, press menu key and go to 'my apps'. If they're downloading click on the 'x' on the top right of the screen to 'stop all'.
You can also check settings --> Data Usage to see whats eating your data, its a feature of ICS
by the way how many apps u got????
what does the built in data usage app reports?? if the problem persists still after a full wipe then it may be (may be) a malware. so if you are sure its not because of sync or some other app then you can try formatting data, system along with your internal sd and external sd from cwm before flashing a new rom.
i agree with everyoen above. it might be google just syncing information
Ok here what happens, when ever I flash a new stock ROM after wipe, right after I log in using google, it start happening.
No its not my apps
As you can see its not play store either.
I checked it multiple times now.
Exact 90MB got downloaded every time.

Ok I'm trying it again, will full wipe, remove sdcard, flash using Odin, lets see what happens
No nothing changed, removed sdcard, full wiped, flash new lpd using Odin.
Right after I sign in though I have UN tick the auto restore option, it started and right nite its at 40 mb, it will stop at 90mb.
I'm assuming something got backup to google and now every time I sign in, it comes back like the contacts.
Is there any way I know what and where its storing the filles.
Does any one know a way to wipe google account from their servers, like the screen shot.
This is wiping some stuff not all, as after signing in, I don't get my last apps or stored passwords anymore but that 90mb still comes.

[Q] where is stock apps being installed automatically after flashing

Dear friends;

BTW stock apps means system apps only... The apps u install from outside is third party apps... U asking abt the apps u installed before or installed after flashing?? Before means obvi it ll be in SD card.. After means it be ll in ROM...

I'm talking about this
that does nothing.
that screen only comes up, when you flashed a stock ICS 4.0.3 rom without wipe. it does not actually install apps, it just scans app folders like /system/app/ and /data/app for already installed apps to integrate in the launcher. maybe it also checks compatibility with android 4. but at the moment that screen shows up, all apps are already installed.
it is just a marketing thingy to pretend to perform app migration after upgrading the OS. if you upgrade through kies and had auto-restart checked and were unable to get to recovery to perform a factory reset prior to the first boot, you will see that screen appear after the first boot "installing" all your apps. then if you reboot into recovery, factory reset the phone and reboot, you will see it only "installs" the few stock apps and all user apps are gone.
this migration, together with not wiping your phone when flashing, will make it slow and unstable over time. it is the same thing with a windows pc. of course one could upgrade the OS, say, from vista to 7, and installed programs and settings might get migrated but in the end, everybody who knows, what they are doing, will still format c: prior to installing a new OS and install the programs afterwards for them to run perfectly.
and all stock apps, that survive a factory reset, wipe are in fact system apps in /system/app
they can still disappear when flashing a new rom.
your best bet is to backup all your apps with titanium backup pro and after flashing a rom or performing a factory reset, you select batch and restore all user apps + data. that way, you can simply install 100+ apps with a few clicks, and their respective settings (scores, customizations...) will be restored as well, which would not be the case with the way you suggested.
so, not only is your way not practical, it is also next to impossible. and it would make no sense, crumming all user apps in the 512MB system partition and leaving the 2GB data partition empty.

thanks for replying
sure I'll not put my all apps in the system/app. I made a rom and put my apps in the data/app and after flashing I got all of my applications installed and working too except some of google apps like google+ and drive. I think that screen shows us it's installing the apps not just scanning, because I searched the rom for these apps I didn't find it, so I think it's packed somewhere and I hope to find it

Brand new phone. System Data is taking almost 25% of the entire internal storage.

Hello guys.
I have recently got the V30 as my new phone. Really love the device so far. There is one problem though: when I look at a remaining storage I see that a huge 14.39 Gb is used for System Data. I suspect that this data is actually various provider ROMs (as I have purchased the phone at a third party retailer). In Canada, they used to lock the phones as soon as you insert a sim card (not anymore), and for that they kept ROMs per provider on the device. I do not have anything installed on the phone yet, so there is nothing I can really uninstall or tweak.
My question is : is there any way to access this "system data" and erase this bloat. 25% of the entire storage is very significant and I can't just ignore it.

14 GB is not that unusual. I have almost 20GB system data on my 128GB V30+ US998, which is my daily phone. See screenshot below.
I also have 64GB V30 US998 with NOTHING installed (not even my gmail address), and it's natively using 14.63B system data. I got a screenshot, but I need to transfer it off the phone. OK, just beamed it to my other phone. See 2nd screenshot below.
The carrier unlocked model doesn't have "various provider ROMs" sitting around doing nothing.

Thanks for reply. Well, ROMs is a theory. Most important question is. How can I see what is in the "sustem data"? Is it hiddem folder? Separate partition? How do I access it (preferably without rooting)? Should I use ADB?

Yes, you can use ADB to remove what you don't want --wallpapers, maybe LG Fitness and stuff you don't intend to use. But be VERY careful removing features as it's difficult to get back once actually removed.
For instance over in this thread below, there is/was apps to "disable" features (safer than removing, but it's still there -- just not visible) and people still messed up their phones. They went crazy disabling EVERYTHING. Some people in that thread also used ADB to actually remove/uninstall the features, not just "disable".
"Why doesn't my VoLTE calling work any more?" Uh, you disabled Wi-Fi Calling.
"Why doesn't Android pay work?" Because you disabled NFC.
"Why doesn't my microdSD card work?" Because you disabled external storage.
Even worse for people who REMOVED those features with ADB.
Read this post below, then you can start at the beginning of that thread for screenshots to see the various stuff you can remove. BE VERY CAREFUL.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74575467&postcount=154
Absolutely. Before I remove anything, I would like to know how to list/browse System Data. Is it a folder or a partition? Any ideas?

yes, you should be able to see it as soon as you open the app. if it isn't there you may have to enable "show hidden" in the menu. Also, in the menu(the 3 dots) there is a section "filesystems" and it shows you a list view of the folders and how much storage they consume. That only appears at the app's "home". so if you want to see "filesystems" in the 3 dot menu, you'll have to be at the starting point.

Is there any method I could unlock the bootloader and root my phone without losing any data?
And also don't tell me that I need to buy any paid programs, I don't want to pay to unlock my bootloader.

There is no way to unlock bootloader without wiping data.
I really am surprised sometimes that people prefer to write some new post that is the same as other posts 89653654645762 instead of using a search engine and finding a topic that interests you. It is like a factory reset - the phone goes back to stock, no user installed apps, no user files, no user data, no user settings. Do a backup first (google or MIUI).
I want to ask another question: what is the best free backup tool that I can install on my laptop and connect my phone so I can backup EVERYTHING, like the data of the apps, all the files, all the setting and everything!
And also: Will it erase data on the SD card?
I don't have a need for backup other than built-in Google. There are other solutions, you should use Google search or Forum search for that.
Regarding SD card - if it is setup as removable storage then it should not be erased, but to be safe I always remove it b4 factory reset. If SD card is setup as phone storage, then it will be erased.

That looks like portable storage. To be sure, unmount it, remove from phone, attach to computer and check you can see all the content in a file explorer.
Hello, guys, this is an update, I removed the SD card from my phone and now I'm using Xiaomi cloud backup tool. What will it backup?
I want to backup Apps, The entire filesystem, app data, settings, and everything.
Will it backup all of that?
Edit: It finished backing up and it's the total size of 3.9 GB but I have 74.43 GB of space occupied by the filesystem, what did it actually back up?
I know that google play store can back up you installed apps, but not the data! Please tell me what did it back up.

[QUESTION] How do I restore a Google Backup after a device has already been setup?

Hello there!
I just recently wanted to switch from my old Huawei P20 to a Samsung S10. I went through the whole setup with Smart Switch during initial startup etc. and assumed that this would also transfer app data, WiFi passwords, etc., but it doesn't! This is an exclusive feature of the Google One backup!
Sadly, during the whole file transfer process from old to new, I wasn't notified of the fact that I had never actually run a Google One backup on my old Huawei P20. It just transferred all apps and pictures etc., but never any app data and all that important stuff!
Now, I did a lot of complex things to my new Samsung phone (such as rooting) and I would not wish to repeat all of that!
How can I restore a Google One Backup even without being in the initialization process?
According to Google:
When you add your Google Account to a phone that's been set up, what you'd previously backed up for that Google Account gets put onto the phone.

I do not believe that. I made the backup from my old Huawei P20 a while ago, my new Samsung S10 hasn't adjusted anything. The Google One App also doesn't show any known backups, which makes sense as these are entirely different devices.
Now, my whole goal is to simply transfer the data from my old Android phone (Huawei P20) to my new Android phone (Samsung S10). The Huawei P20 is not rooted, the Samsung S10 is rooted. I have made backups using Huawei's own software of the phone, which I do believe includes app data, but I have not yet found a way to restore a Huawei backup on a Samsung phone.
The USB-C port of my Huawei / old phone is broken, so it can be charged, but no data can be transferred, hence not even Titanium Backup, Helium, or oandbackup which could backup app data through USB debugging and a computer, would work.

Is there any way you can imagine that I would be capable of restoring my Google Backup or something of equal effect (make a backup with app data, WiFi logs, call history... and restore it)?

This is a lie! This has never happened to me. My new phone simply claims there has never been a backup.

To restore a previous phone’s backup to a new phone, you need the PIN, password, or pattern for your lock screen.
After resetting your phone, tap Start. Follow the on-screen steps.
Connect to a Wi-Fi or mobile network.
When you see "Copy apps & data," tap Next > Can't use old phone.
Under "Copy another way," tap OK > A backup from the cloud.
Sign into the Google Account that has the backup of your data.
Follow the on-screen steps.
Strongly agree! However, your phone needs to be rooted for this which my Huawei P20 sadly isn't! For the future, these options, as well as Neo Backup, will be super helpful to transfer my data!

Good idea! Sadly, only possible when resetting my phone and doing everything again, which I will sadly now do. Wish me luck, folks!
