Curious if anyone knows about hooking up a wired, usb controller to the TF while docked. I already own the wired gaming controllers that I use on my laptop for SNES roms, but wanted to use it on the transformer while I'm out.
android 3.1 supports the xbox and ps3 wire controllers...and i'm guessing other standard (meaning they work without custom drivers) gamepads.
i test an old PC gamepad i had, and it only partially worked. (some buttons aren't recognized, or recognized weirdly)
eitherway, it's trial and error.
but officially, Android 3.1 supports, at the very least, the xbox and ps3 controllers.
I can confirm ps3 controller works

Will give it a try
Sweet, well i have an older gamepad that once I get the TF I will give it a shot, worst comes to worst will just pick up an xbox controller and call it good
The Xbox 360 USB controller does not work with this tablet.
Are you using an actual USB 360 controller or a 360 controller with the charge and play cable? The charge and play cable does not transmit data, it only charges, so you would have to have the 360 controller synced through blue tooth to make it work that way.
I got one of these docks today so I can confirm that the following controllers work with the dock:
PS3 dual shock
Logitech Cordless Precision PS3 controller (Wireless!)
Mayflash Classic Controller USB adapter (this one surprised me)
HOWEVER!
I was unable to get any of the emulators to register the right analog stick, which for most emulators is not a big deal, but still not as good I think as just using a wii remote with a classic controller which seems to work for all the buttons and sticks and things.
Also, I was unable to get 2 usb gamepads to be recognized independently (i.e. as player 1 and player 2) so for me this is not good either. I am now selling the dock on ebay because the only plus for me was being able to have 2 wireless USB gamepads that are not tethered to something else (wii remote) and be able to play 2 player games. Otherwise this dock just makes my transformer less portable. I'm sure for some people it's great though, I'm not knocking it, it just wasn't suited for what I wanted.
Anyone try it with a Logitech gamepad (usb)?

Yes, I'm using an actual USB Xbox 360 controller not the wireless controller with the charge and play cable. This is an issue that if you search the forums you'll find others who have the same problem. I had emailed Asus more than a month ago about the issue and they finally responded and said:
Dear Valued Customer,
For the problem, currently TF101's dock does not support xbox 360 controller.
Sorry for any inconvenience. Wish you have a nice day.

And when I asked if it will be supported in the future:
Dear Valued Customer,
Currently TF101 does not support it, but I will pass your test result as a VOC(vovice of customer) to the related dept.

The wireless gamepad I tried was Logitech, so I would imagine that this would work as well. I have a couple of older model Logitech gamepads I can test later on if I get around to it.
I really am disappointed though in the fact that android 3.1 does not seem to distinguish between 2 different gamepads plugged in at the same time. I tried setting up a 2 player game of Contra by mapping buttons for player 1 and player 2 on each respective pad, but both gamepads controlled both characters at the same time. So it's fine for single player, but any kind of multiplayer is no go.
I take it back. It is something they are looking to resolve:
The next firmware update will support xbox 360 controller and the firmware will be released soon.

Thanks so much for the info! But would you be so kind as to check with the older model Logitech gamepads (with usb)? I'm looking to buy the one that I linked you earlier and this would definitely be a deal breaker if it didn't work.
Hello,
Does anyone have a fully working cheap game pad? I want to buy one but I don't know if a PS2 pad for example would work fine, or even a compatible one.
Any experience with them?
Thanks!
I dont know exactly how cheap you want to go but i got my Sixaxis off eBay for 20 bucks shipped. If you look for the old sixaxis controllers wthout rumble they are pretty cheap. Then you can either plug it in with a usb cable or purchase a 2 dollar app that lets you connect it wirelessly. (sixaxis controller in the market)
If you have the keyboard dock you could also just pick up a 3rd party xbox 360 controller. Im not 100 percent sure about compatibility but the Agterglow controller i have works great (lights and all). I think its made by PDP and I got it for 20 bucks at gamestop, where they have a great selection of used controllers too.
Other than that Im fairly sure that after 3.1 most usb gamepads should be compatible. If you want really cheap head down to your local thrift store where i sure thy have an entire wall of ancient usb gamepads.
Good luck an happy gaming!
I have a couple cheap ones and some work better than others.
SNES style controller with USB that works fine on Transformer
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002JAU20W
$9.15
If you want something with analoge sticks (note one of the two sticks will not work on transformer) then I went with a wired xbox controller
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ZSN600
$29.96
I went with the xbox bc I have an xbox already, if you have a PS3 you might want to get one of those so you can use it on more than one thing.
I also have an xbox 1 controller with a modded USB cable (just cut the wires and match up the colors) and it works great. Since they are so old they are pretty much free and have actually more buttons to map then the 360 controller.
I also have a NES Style controller like the SNES one it was cheap but for whatever reason it does not work on the transformer but I use it on my PC all the time.
Be careful buying cheap controllers, they are cheap for a reason. They cheap controllers (and sometimes the expensive ones) almost never compare to genuine console controllers.
If you can stick with PS3 and 360 controllers, they work and they work great. Just buy used if your looking to save some money. I have both a wired 360 and a wireless PS3 controller I use with my Transformer.

I think you're right. I'm going for the ps3 original. Thanks everybody!
For my Galaxy Nexus, I use Sixaxis to connect my PS3 controller. This app requires root access to work.
On the Transformer Prime, how would I connect my PS3 controller through bluetooth? I understand functionality is natively supported, but when I Scan for devices in the Bluetooth settings, it does not find my PS3 controller. As I do not have root, I cannot use the Sixaxis app. So how do I connect? Thanks in advance.
I don't have a ps3 controller to test, but I believe the native support comes from plugging in the controller via usb. I saw a review video that demo'd this with the controller plugged into the keyboard dock.

I am using this with the USB on the dock. It works on the desktop; left, right and it goes from one icon to another and to the next or previous desktop. But within android games not working mostly. I havent tried it yet with the emulators where you can map the keys. Why, why did I sell my GTab 10.1???? Everything was working including GPS and hdmi with an adapter.
So the kit from gamestop that comes with the controller includes this usb dongle then? Or, are there some controllers that will work but just not the Sony brand one (which I assume probably feels the best)

Supposely this app works for the Prime and even in the Video it has him choosing Wireless XBOX 360 controller...
I emailed him to see if it works for this tablet and the wireless controllers via Bluetooth
I have the dock and loaded a Warhammer trial on Onlive hoping it would be plug and play like it mentioned in the video demo I saw. Sadly, that is not the case so far. Will have to do some digging to see how to get it to work with Onlive since that is the main reason I was looking into that game service.

i just got back from game stop and this controller links via blu-tooth it only charges via usb, gamestop is now selling the controller for 39.99 standalone.
i think it probably has the option to make it visible to blutooth networks where there may be some security measures on the ps3 controllers blutooth to prevent it from being seen by anything non-sony, i don't really know, just taking a wild stab at it here, but seems logical to me.
i can;t personally confirm this, but this is what i was told by the guy in the store that seemed to know about the tf201, at least more then most people i've talked to IRL....take that for what it's worth....
You have to be rooted and you need the app sixaxis controller. Then you download and install the computer client, plug in the PS3 controller to the pc and enter the bluetooth address from your phone (located at the bottom of the sixaxis controller app) this syncs your controller to the tablet.
here is a compatibility checker for sixaxis controller (my prime is on it's way so I'm not sure if it works yet)
https://market.android.com/details?...kaW9zLnNpeGF4aXNjb21wYXRpYmlsaXR5Y2hlY2tlciJd
If it's compatible here is the paid app
https://market.android.com/details?...udios.sixaxiscontroller&feature=search_result
I got my ps3 controller working once i finally rooted. It works well with shadowgun and FPse... I just wish you could map the buttons to what you want, kinda awkward using the analog press button to fire...
Anyone know how to change this? No matter what I set my buttons too in the sixaxis app it doesn't seem to change.
But overall its not that bad, and its really fun for shadowgun.
If your thinking about getting the Gamestop bluetooth controller, dont... its a POS. I had it bundled with my first prime and the controller (and the GS prime) was a POS. It was ugly and the only game I could get it to work with was shadow gun (not as a real controller but just like the sixaxis app, keyboard input override).

okay i used the app : Sixaxis Controller, (Dancing Pixel Studios) and used this controller setup:
dpad center is for fire i set that to both R2 and R! plus the start key to be able to select menu options.
7 is for reload and i set that to L1 and L2
J is for analog 2 left
L is for analog 2 right
I is for analog 2 up
K is for analog 2 down
dpad left for analog 1 left
dpad right for analog 1 right
dpad up for analog 1 up
dpad down for analog 1 down
back for select which pause the game
now for the weapons. (only figured out for two)
A is for shotgun set that to square
D is for SMG set that to x
W is for Shotgun and i have that at Triangle
guessing S is for the 4th weapon but will verify if need to

I also use sixaxis on my prime to connect a PS3 controller.
It will work with ANY game that supports gamepad input and...brace yourself, ANY game that supports touch screen input!
Took about 5 minutes to set up and now im playing games on my tv from across the room.
*on bluetooth
You dont need any special dongles to make it work. You can either use your dock to pair, or you can do it on a windows PC.
You only need to pair it once, but it becomes bound to your device, so if you want to do it on another tablet too you have to re-pair it.
The instructions on the website are extremely easy to understand. I was happy to shell out $2 for the app.
Yes i spent the $2 on sixaxis app on the market and its well worth it.
No matter how i setup my buttons on sixaxis they remain the same...
IE: Setting fire (dpad center) to L1 or R1 doesnt set them to L1 or R1 I still have to use dpad center to fire on my controller...
Any idea what i may be doing wrong? Thanks for your button mapping setup. I will try more to get it to map out for me.
also how would you setup the controller to work on a game such as samurai II vengeance?
i think this is whats going wrong. You need to change the default input method its always on asus keybord. you need to change it to sixaxis controller you can do this in the sixaxes app if you have done that make sure you restart the game. and should work with the keysetup i posted. hope this helps.
Have you tried plugging your PS3 controller into your computer and changing the Bluetooth address to the same as your prime. Then searching for it on your prime?

Hello
I have MHL adapter and its working fine with my SGS2 but i want to play games on the TV on Wifi/BT Game PAD.
I don`t have any game pad so this is open.
In theory I have rpogram to chose:
a) USB/BT Joystick Center - for any OTG controllers
b) Sixaxis controller - for only original PS3 game pads
I don`t want to buy the PS3 game pad as its expesive a I additionally I want to buy next year the new XBOX.
Best choise for now would be a cheap wireless controller with the program A) which dosen`t need to be plugged to the phone with OTG cable.
Is this possible and is there such a hardware to buy?
Any ideas?
Use a cheap usb (pc) game pad and use it with A program.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
how to connect it when I have the MHL adapter in the USB port ?
the sixaxis controller and the sixaxis app are your only options.
let me explain:
if you want to use mhl, you cannot use another usb device, which excludes xbox controllers, because, well, the wired one needs a usb port of course, but the wireless needs a usb receiver as well (since it is not bluetooth). also, i never got the wired one working, it seems to consume to much power for the phone and only works on tablets.
then there is the wiimote, which works with bluetooth, but to my knowledge, it does not work with the bluetooth stack on the s2. the consequence is:
either you use an aosp/aokp based rom (which uses a different bluetooth stack), then you can use the wiimote, but no mhl, or you use a stock rom, then you can use mhl, but no wiimote.
since you need the usb port for mhl, all "cheap pc usb controllers" are out as well.
then there is the phonejoy controller, which works as a native bluetooth controller, but costs way too much for being just a sixaxis knock-off controller (it is like 60eur here).
so, if you go with the original sony dualshock 3 controller (for about 30eur) and an additional 2eur, you are better off. also, besides being able to pair the controller as a native controller, it can also be connected as a native keyboard or using touch profiles, which means, games without controller support will also work. and since this works with a fairly regular bluetooth connection, there is no cable issue there.

I really want to edit the deadzones on the ipega 9023 telescopic bluetooth controller. I have seen very little information regarding this gamepad (and if it is even possible to adjust the deadzone successfully at all).
All I know is that I have to edit the .kl file for the ipega 9023, but I can't find the .kl file for this device at all. All I have to go on is the following:
First download root power explorer
Mount rw
Go to root
System/usr/keylayout
Search for your controler id vendor if u cant find it just go through all of them till you find this
# Left and right stick.
# The reported value for flat is 128 out of a range from -32767 to 32768, which is absurd.
# This confuses applications that rely on the flat value because the joystick actually
# settles in a flat range of +/- 4096 or so.
axis 0x00 X flat 4096
axis 0x01 Y flat 4096
axis 0x03 Z flat 4096
axis 0x04 RZ flat 4096
I wnt to the directory above and found nothing for the ipega. I also installed a terminal emulator and typed cat /proc/bus/input/devices to see all connected devices. I saw info on a device called "Broadcom Bluetooth HID" with vendor 1949 product 0402, but I saw no .kl file at all with that vendor id or product id.
Has anyone successfully calibrated the ipega 9023 and edited the deadzones at all? Should I just give up and deal with the deadzones?
Search this thread here https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2033780
Just search for your specific controller. I'm sure someone has already configured your controller, also with the correct vendor ID and product ID as they did mine, the file I found also had the Vendor ID as 1949 and the Product ID as 0402, but my controller is the iPega PG-9021.
I also read somewhere in that thread there is a tutorial to make your own .kl file. Worth a look!
Ok, thanks for the info!
Don't bother, the dead zones on the Ipega controllers are hard coded into the microcontroller on the gamepad itself. Yes Android keylayout files can then add their own additional deadzone, which is what you're looking at, but lowering it from 4096 won't do a damn thing because the Ipega's deadzone is already MUCH larger than that.

It'll be coming from China, so it'll take more than expected (should arrive by the end of the month, I could swear it was a Prime product so I thought it was a next-day deal, but oh well).
The main thing is that I fear it could be a rebrand of another pad I tried in the past, the STG-ONE (look for it on Google) which was utter **** as not only it had the same deadzone troubles, it also didn't record analog sticks clicking (L3 and R3 inputs, in other words) even if the sticks clicked themselves, and bluetooth connectivity was completely unreliable.
Sure it looks identical, but anyway for 30 euros or so it's a test I can undertake.
EDIT: I've tried the STG-ONE again just to be sure and it's not as ****ty as I remembered, the deadzones are a bit better than i remembered (but still difficult to use in aiming for FPS games, tried on Dead Trigger 2), but the L3/R3 thing is a bummer. I'll try again the PG-9023 as soon as it charges enough, to see STG-ONE deadzones are at least better than its ones, or if they're the same.
Plan is to use with my Galaxy Tab S2 with Moonlight to stream PC games on it, the streaming works surprisingly well and is almost completely lag-free (works better on my S9 but i prefer the bigger screen). Also emulators, of course, MAME in particular, but such old games don't usually need analog sticks so the pads I already own are more than enough for them.

Tried it. In hindsight, they pretty both suck. Will update when the PG-9083 arrives!
Hello everyone,
so, the PG-9083 arrived a couple days ago, but I've found just now the time to write here.
TL;DR: The analogs still suck, unless you connect the pad with an OTG cable and your phone supports Xbox 360 pads
So as soon as the package arrived I connected the pad to an USB cable coming from my PC, and I noticed the pad got recognized as an Xbox 360 controller. Didn't care much about it at that moment, but it actually was an important detail.
So I bluetooth connect the PG-9083 to my Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 and after many tests the conclusion is that the analog sticks still suck. I even rooted the tablet and tried messing up with the keyboard layout files, but even changing the deadzone settings there didn't improve anything.
Then, I don't even remember why, I connected the PG-9083 directly to the Tab S2 with an OTG cable. The tablet didn't recognize the pad (for some reason Samsung didn't include Xbox 360 gamepad drivers in its Tab S2 and its Galaxy S9, which are the two devices that I own), but then I tried starting Moonlight (which is the main reason I'm interested in an Android pad) which has an internal custom Xbox 360 driver, and lo and behold, it worked like a charm, with the analog sticks performing perfectly.
So some final considerations:
- It seems it's a software problem rather than a hardware one, although it seems to be on the driver level and not on the keyboard layout one
- Even when using the faulty bluetooth mode, I achieved some good results in Shadow of War (again, streaming it from my PC by using Moonlight) by reducing the stick deadzones to zero in the game's settings. Why does it work when changing the settings in-game, but not from the keyboard layout file? No idea!
- Can't exclude it could be some quirk in Samsung devices
- I've tried the OTG method just with Moonlight, can't say if the sticks would be fine also with other apps or with devices that natively support Xbox 360 pads
- The sticks are fine when connected to PC, both via USB (in which case the PG-9083 acts as a standard Xinput, Xbox 360 pad) and, surprisingly, via bluetooth (in which case the PG-9083 acts as a standard DirectInput pad, I had to try this with the first Dead Rising since most recent games seem to accept Xinput pads only)
- So which other Android pads can work as an Xbox 360 pad when used via USB? Our old friend the PG-9023 doesn't, and neither the STG-ONE (surprisingly, since the PG-9083 seems a relabel of it). PG-9055 also works via USB (but the USB cable must be placed on the left handle, making it impractical to use when connected). Good old PG-9037 also works via USB. Mars Gaming MGP1, nope.
So I hope this was useful and maybe could shed some light in how Android handles gamepads and maybe inspire someone to write some custom driver to fix everything?
Cheers!
I wanted to post up on this thread that I too just received a pg-9083 and tried it out with my nvidia tablet.
It is exactly as brigcam says. The bluetooth mode on Android has the deadzone issue but the PC usb method does not. I did not try PC Bluetooth or Android OTG.
So who would need to fix this??? I emailed iPega but don't expect a helpful resolution. I will try tincore with a rooted tablet i have to see if it can change the deadzones, but I don't want to root my k1.

Anyone try an Xbox one or other "good" controller paired to their tablet or phone using bluetooth? In words is the deadzone problem android based foe any controller over bluetooth or specific to the ipega controller?

So, I have tried the Nvidia Controller 2017, and it works great ofc. Don't have any other controllers to try unfortunately.
Other weird things:
1. If I open up my gamepad tester app I can see that the hardware is registering the axis values of the sticks with no deadzone, so the hardware is working properly. So I don't get where in software the deadzone is being enforced. Earlier posters said that changing the .kl files do nothing, and anyways I don't want to root the tablet and lose access to other apps.
2. I connected the controller to my clamshell Nvidia portable and there are no deadzone issues! Admittedly there's no use for the controller in this context but why does it work on this device and not the other??? Is it because of the Android versions?

The only reason I can think of is that its trying to emulate a keyboard WASD instead of a joystick or its in some conflict with the keyboard selection when connected via bluetooth. The DS4 controller has no issues with deadzone on the gamepad tester via Bluetooth. Its actualy detected as a wireless gamepad and has a gamepad logo on the bluetooth screen. That being said I can be totally off and android has other issues with bluetooth

Its an ipega issue. With xbone controller over Bluetooth there are no analog stock issues. Games control like being played with gamepad on the PC or console.
I'm now using my Shield K1 with a clip that attaches to my xbone controller. Too bad since I like ipega form factor.

I see that iPega have released an updated version of the PG-9083 controller. Any improvement with this dead zone issue?
I got the PG-9083S (which I assume is the updated version) this afternoon and the dead zones are massive and not configurable in any way obvious to me. Galaxy Tab S6+, tried a bunch of FPS games with steam link and game pass cloud streaming. Playable but very much still an annoyance with this hardware.
