I have a VS996 that I Frankensteined and WTf'd. I flashed it back to stock VS996 from US998 (still rooted) afterward.
I've been rooting and flashing my android phones for about 10 years now, so this isn't new to me. But this phone is confusing as hell to me.
My question is: Are there any custom roms I can flash over VS996?
[ROM][Joan][UNOFFICIAL]ResurrectionRemix v6.1.0[8.1.0] says it works, but in some of the posts, people say they are running on a VS996 that was Frankensteined. Does that mean they have a VS996 but are now running US998 and the rom? Or they flashed to US998 and then back to VS996 and are now running the rom?
Or do I have to reflash US998 and go from there? Do I have to Re-Frankenstein?
Thanks.

All current era (last six months at least) "H930" AOSP/Lineage custom ROMs work with all V30/V30+/V30S variants -- except for T-Mobile H932. This includes VS996.
Think of "H930" label for AOSP/Lineage custom ROMs as meaning it's not for "H932", but includes ALL others. Conversely, do NOT flash anything labelled for "H932" on ANY other V30.

Thank you. That's exactly what I needed to know.
Related question I think, what is the advantage of 996 if I'm on Verizon network? Just bloatware?

Verizon users can answer that better. Sometimes stuff like texting, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling can work better on carrier firmware. However I do not know if that's the case with Verizon. I think most Verizon users on US998 have workaround for all that, but I can't be certain

I've heard that you can't run Verizon's VOLTE on non-VS996 firmwares. Most custom ROMs also dont' support VZ-VOLTE because of this. I believe there's a thread with a reward for someone who figures it out, but bottom line is that it doesn't work today. For this reason, I have stayed with VS996. Honestly, it gives you everything you need... and you can easily freeze/disable whatever you don't want. NOTE, you do need the Verizon app to be installed and active for VOLTE to work, from what I've seen... but the rest can be frozen. Incidentally, it's better to freeze/disable than uninstall., because you can always restore it later if needed... too many people try to uninstall and then ask for the APK later to try to fix it...
I'm a Verizon user with a vs996. I have tried the different AOSP roms, and while they do ok, I have always had something not work exactly as it should, i.e., the texting, phone problems, or the quad dac, (depending on the rom) or some other just mostly little (not major) issues.
Last week, I finally tried the vs996 twrp rom, instead of the us998, that I normally run. After about a week, I decided that I did not like it quite as well as the us998 rom and so, yesterday I went back to us998. The vs996 didn't seem to work as smoothly as it should (I don't use some of the stuff people on here want that only Verizon has - - ie, wifi calling). At times I had to do double tap on things, just minor stuff. The other thing is, in order to use the Hotspot, you have to go thru Verizon, but, with the us998, I can use the included hot spot, if need be and not worry about Verizon.
So, I am very happy with the us998 rom. I would like to do more customization, but not a big deal if I don't. It runs the smoothest, for me, of all the roms I have tried.

I'm on Page Plus (Verizon service) and Volte doesn't really concern me. But I understand with roms not working correctly. I've flashed my fair share on my Motorolas. For the time being, I think I'm going to stick with stock since I'm still getting used to this phone. I just wish the recovery had rom slots like my old Droid Razr had so I could test out different roms without screwing things up, lol.
I do love this phone. Such a nice upgrade from the Droid Turbo. It was also nice to unlock it FOR FREE unlike the Turbo.
I did notice something with Titanium Backup (I used to use it on my Samsun Intercept and Razr). When I froze or uninstalled certain apps, they still remained in the App list in Settings as enabled or still installed. It caused havok when they'd try to run on their own (some Google apps). I had to unfreeze them and disable in Settings. Strange. All of the other bloatware still shows as installed, too.

I had the International version of the Moto Quark (sold under various names around the world: Droid Turbo/Moto Turbo/Moto Maxx) and yes the V30 is the phone I chose to upgrade from after 3 years. The V30/V30+ is the successor in spirit to that phone. It's the phone Motorola should have made if they had not lost their way with stupid mods.
For the record, I'm on Total Wireless (Verizon MVNO)... that's why I prefer to have VS996 for the wifi/volte calling.
I don't notice any lagging or slowdowns. I have disabled some of the VZ bloatware, so maybe that's what helped it. I was on US998 originally, but when I couldn't get wifi/volte working I knew I had to stick to this.
Keep in mind, I believe VZ will be going all volte in the near future? At which point, you may be forced to run a volte-capable ROM. Certainly nothing to worry about right now, but I thought that was happening in 2020 or something, so I figured I'd be ready from the start.

Verizon says LTE and VoLTE only after December 31, 2019.

There you go. So, it's better to be prepared, and tweak now rather than having to do it last minute... at least that's what I'm doing...
quick question:
I bought a frankestensteined US998 that was a LS998. It was bought running android 7.0, i updated it using LGUP to US99820e Android 8.0 Sept 2018 Security.
I have not rooted (checked it and it not rooted)
Bootloader, i didn't unlock it
I have dont nothing to the phone other than just update it from Android 7 to Android 8
I am running stock US998 and woud like to flash vs996 as i'm on total wireless (i have read about that and know how to do it, easy upgrade)
Can I return to US998 from vs996 just as easy, in case I want To go back to us998 what would i have to do?
thanks

Yes. You can flash VS996 KDZ via Frankenstein instructions. You can return to US998 also via Frankenstein instructions.
I had a question for all the rooted/unlocked VS996 users. Im currently running US998 because of the tethering function. I'd rather be on VS996 for the Volte features and just debloat. Has anyone figured out how to get around/disable the tether check Verizon has on this rom? Is there an easy way to get the tethering to work? I even tried the magisk tether module with no luck. Thanks for any suggestions!
I own US998 and the general consensus say that Stock Oreo is more stable than stock Pie in US998.
However, is it the same for H932?
BTW shoutout to the people who still use H932. We still exist lol.
So you own both US998 and T-Mobile H932?
Not to be confused with the H932PR. That's why I always state fully T-Mobile H932.
I used to own an H932 on Oreo, and my wife still owns one on Pie (unrooted, OTA updated). She has not had any stability problems.
I got a replacement US998 on Pie (from YYwireless) and also had no stability problems. I've since downgraded it to Oreo, mainly because some apps I use don't support Pie.
I also got another US998 to use as backup phone (same seller). I've left that one on Pie and use it when my primary phone is charging. Otherwise mostly same setup and apps. No stability problems.
I've seen all the same reports about Pie instability, and have to wonder if they are mostly caused by the upgrade process. Again my wife's OTA updated phone is fine. And the two US998 on Pie I received from YYwireless are/were fine too. (They're converted LS998, but he described them as processed in batches, I assume with Octoplus or similar direct flashing procedure.)
It's true that Pie is a bit slower than Oreo, even after my usual debloating. I never understood claims that Pie is smoother, I'm not seeing that. There's a tiny lag compared to Oreo. But I'm not seeing instability. Battery life is fine too, thanks to the Adaptive Battery feature on Pie.
And as I've described elsewhere, I find the US998 Pie modem a lot better than the Oreo one.
Again, that's my experience
If I decide to upgrade my Oreo phone to Pie again (say to get the better modem) I will definitely heed ChazzMatt's advice and Partition DL it down to Nougat first.

Yeah I own the T-Mobile variant too. One is my personal phone, and other one is my backup and my DAP where I install third party apps and privacy invasive apps. I only install open source apps on my main phone which is the US998
hmm It's been a months since I use US998 on oreo 20h but I have noticed that it had trouble multitasking. All the apps will refresh and lose whatever progress I am doing when I switch window. However, this is not present in T-mobile H932 running on stock OREO 20s. @ChazzMatt Do you have an insight about this? I did everything you told me to months ago when installing US998 20h, I made sure to flash the previous versions before flashing 20h to avoid issues.
I'm on US998 20h and I am NOT seeing this. And I switch a lot back and forth between apps with texts open. For example, between Keep, XDA, Gmail, Timesheet (time tracking app) etc.
If you're in Battery Saver mode, Android is quicker to flush an app after the phone goes to sleep. But I use Battery Saver mode a lot, and even then I only experience it on things like UAPP (if I pause music playback and come back 15 mins later). And I could avoid it if by Excluding that app from Battery Saving, but of course it will use more battery then.
But it sounds like what you're seeing is more basic. Like something is hogging all the memory so that Android has to flush whenever you switch between apps.
Restart the phone if you haven't already (you probably have). If that doesn't fix it, you may have to do a Factory Reset (or TWRP wipe if you're rooted).
Maybe Chazz has other/better ideas.
welp, I have already done a lot from completely removing battery saving entirely. I restarted and went to recovery to clear dalvik and cache. still nothing. It could be US Cellular giving US998 aids to my US998 . Remember how old US998 users like you and @ChazzMatt is not having any trouble with US998 because you got your devices way back before US Cellular got hold of US998 . But someone like me who go it recently, had this app from Digital Turbine that install all kinds of crap in my phone is happening.
meanwhile, I am trying the T-mobile H932 20s port for US998. Because 20s works perfect on T-mobile H932. I really need a stable phone right now.
Actually I got my US998 just a few months ago, and it was on Pie when I got it. I rolled it back to Oreo after about a month. It has been clean flashed numerous times, both on Nougat and Oreo, and both as US998, H931 and H933.
I had an H932 for 2+ years before that, which I also kept on 20s.
But I never had the problem you describe on either phone or either ROM.
@TheDannemand
I finally figured out the problem days later. Because even after flasing the T-mobile port rom for US998, it still displayed it.
You suggesting that the memory is getting hogged really helped me diagnosed the problem. So I uninstalled some apps, and the culprit was Energized ad blocker from Magisk. I did remember that it warns you that if you used their ultimate pack, it might impact your performance. So yeah this is what causing issues for me on US998 stock rom and to now the T-mobile stock rom port for US998.
but.... oddly. I did not have this problem in my T-mobile H932 on 20s stock rom with Energized using ultimate pack. hmm does this mean that H932 is actually superior in performance than US998?

Glad you finally figured it out. I use AdGuard on mine and my wife's phone and free Blokada on my mother's.
The dev who rooted the T-Mobile H932 is of the opinion the US998 is better.

Yes, good detective work there. Glad you found the culprit.
I use Blokada with the Energized Blu list. Works well for me.
Generally speaking, US998 is a better device because it's not as locked down as H932. In the beginning, we thought H932 would be the most likely carrier model to get root because of its readily unlockable bootloader. But of course it turned out the opposite, thanks to WTF. H932 is easier bricked too. And don't even get me started with TMO's fascist SIM unlocking
But when it comes to performance of the ROM itself, I can't say I noticed a difference once the bloat and tracking services are trimmed from each model. H932 has one more tracker than the others, while US998 has that nasty Mobile Services Manager, but both can be easily removed.
While I haven't compared the two side by side, I honestly don't think there is much difference in the core OS or how they are tuned. I could be wrong, of course.
I'm running rooted stock 30b (US998), and it's been running solid for years until lately. Now it seems it's starting to lag and slow down to the point of near unusability.
Want to try using a custom ROM to see if that will alleviate the issue, but due to my carrier (MVNO of T-Mo), I need VoLTE. Normally LineageOS is my go-to, but the 19.1 build doesn't support VoLTE and it says it probably never will.
I see other ROMs as well, but if they're all AOSP/LineageOS based, then can I safely assume they won't support VoLTE either? Or are there any custom ROMs out there for the V30 that DO support VoLTE?
VoWiFi would also be nice
Thanks
As far as I've seen, no custom ROM supports VOLTE on this phone. Maybe other phones have it, but not this one. There was a "reward" post for someone finding a way to get it working, but it never happened.
I've heard issues with Pie ROMs on this phone, as the released version wasn't done very well. I might suggest going back to US998 Oreo as this may resolve the issues for you.

Not for custom ROMs. In fact that's why we created this other thread that by 2022 all U.S. owners of V30 would have to go back to stock ROM -- due to 3G bands (CDMA & HSPA going away and VoLTE being necessary for phone calls with carrier numbers. You can ROOT the stock ROM to still modify stuff, but only stock ROM allows VoLTE.
All U.S. V30/V3O+/V30S will need stock firmware, not LOS-based custom ROMs. When?

3G CDMA and HSPA is going away. U.S. users will NEED VoLTE and/or Wi-Fi calling for carrier phone calls. V30 LOS-based ROMs do not have that and will never have that.

I started that thread back in mid-2020 to warn people in plenty of time. AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile (which includes former Sprint) delayed their timelines a little but still the admonition is true. Users in other countries that still have 3G in addition to LTE can use custom ROMs.
The caveat to that is unless you are using a VoIP phone number (which uses data) -- like Google Voice -- and don't need carrier based phone calls. But most people only use carrier calls.
