Unlocked Burner Phone for Teaching Android Class

I want to teach an Android class which includes rooting and rom'ing. What unlocked "burner" Android phone would you recommend. I see some interesting phones here https://www.walmart.com/c/kp/unlocked-android-phones?sort=price_low but searching the internet tells me that some may be difficult to root and rom. What phone would you recommend? I would probably need phones that cost $50 or less.

Could Samsung provide an easy root tool ?

Would Samsung be able to develop an easy tool to root old, outdated phones and tablets without their having to invest a lot of time or money or would it be just as difficult for them as for hackers? It would be good P.R. in that they do not provide many updates.
I have two aging 10.1 tablets (p600) and would love to have an easy way to root.

Samsung won't do that sort of thing, no. The trouble is it would cost money that they wouldn't get back and it could potentially make them liable for any problems that people cause by modding something they shouldn't.
Samsung would much rather people just invest in a new tablet or handset instead of keeping old ones.

Anyone tried the bootloader unlock service?

MOS claims that they support Mate20Pro Chinese model. Has anyone tried this?
https://ministryofsolutions.com/huawei-bootloader-unlock-service-all-new-models-new-firmwares
Thinking of buying a Chinese version since the price is more reasonable and I am going to China next week. But I think Magisk or global ROM is needed for using Google Pay, otherwise, it fails on adding credit cards.
I am just wondering if it is possible or there is another way to use Google Pay?
The Chinese ROM gets updates much more quickly and often partly because they don't have to be certified by Google but because the ROM is uncertified Google Pay won't work. Getting Google Pay to work on an uncertified ROM requires root so it isn't possible on this phone.
Huawei Mate 20 PRO of Chinese Origin
Hi Maxzhx, I have been using the bought in China LYA-AL10 Mate 20 Pro with 256/8 ROM/RAM in Dubai (UAE) since last one month. From screenshot settings, I can see the Google Pay is available, however, I use Samsung Pay here so I have not activated.
Buying a custom unlock would be cute, but what then? No one is going to develop anything for this phone. You would have the most crude 'root' there is, with all the security stuff shut down that comes along with it. Sadly, unless a full bootloader unlock is discovered (hopefully one that works with all variants) there wouldn't be any point because you wouldn't have a properly setup root to begin with, you certainly wouldn't have Magisk, and it would be utterly pointless to run custom roms because NONE of the proprietary hardware goodies would be supported.
That's the price we pay for this phone, and we better be happy with it. So far, I'm not going into seizures over not having SU, but honestly I find the phone kinda boring overall so I don't really care.

But you're missing the fact that this is a treble phone. All the roms are readily available. All you need is to unlock bootloader then flash a system image.

What are excellent smartphones I can buy for the purpose of installing custom roms

I'm at a bit of a stand still at this point. I first bought a Nexus 5x, but that ended up with dead pixels within a week. 5x's are so old now, I just don't know which merchants I can trust buying them from. I don't really want a phone that's going to last only a month or two when buying it supposedly new. It said new, but I'm more inclined to think used and old and sort of refurbished is more accurate. I mean, it looked new, but so does every barely refurbished breaks down in a month product.
So, I thought I'd get the Motorola Moto G7. It's a new phone. LineageOS has a custom rom for it. It's within my price range. It has better hardware than the Nexus 5x. I had my mind made up and everything, but now I'm reading that it may be more hassle than it's worth because as far as I can tell Motorola doesn't even provide stock roms for G7. I was also reading in some forum that Motorola has their own fastboot version for their phones? Judging by my adventure with the Nexus 5x, and it was a fun adventure, I may need to flash the appropriate stock rom before I can even install LineageOS to the G7. Also, Motorola likes to threaten that the warranty is nullified by unlocking the bootloader. So, now I'm thinking why do I want to spend $200 on a maybe might work, maybe might not be able to get my money back.
That was my first thing, LineageOS on the Nexus 5x. I'm not stuck on LineageOS, by the way. I'm willing to install anything else pretty much. LineageOS was just the most simple one, so I figured it was a good learning tool for me to try first.
So now, I don't know what to do.
Can you all give me some "yeah, this phone is great for custom rom type things" type of list or something?
My ideal is $0 to around $200, but if I need to go for that $400+ range to get phones that are more or less great for custom roms type of stuff, then I am willing to go up there.
So, when I was having this adventure with the Nexus 5x, I discovered, and correct me if I'm wrong, that Nexus 5x must be one of the best smartphones for custom roms things. Google provides the stock roms and simple fastboot flashing commands for any mistakes you make, and the phone just never really gave me problems when I was trying to learn how to do everything. Really. the tutorials were much worse than the phone itself. It was really really simple, and the tutorials all make it look really really hard. Of course some of that was inaccurate information, which again, with the 5x it wasn't a difficult matter to figure out that a tutorial is saying something inaccurate.
I realize every phone will have its own level of difficulty and learning curve. I'm looking for smart phones that do in fact work that most who do this stuff seem to like using. I will be buying the carrier-unlocked version of whichever phone I buy, as those seem to be the ones that manufacturers let us unlock the bootloader of.

Easiest budget device to root in 2020

Hello!
I need to play around with IMEI numbers (that is, changing them) on several mobile phones. It's legal in my country AFAIK, so no worries for that
The point is, I'm an absolute rookie on, as in: I never did anything of the sort.
Apparently the first thing I need to do is rooting the phone, then get the right software to change the IMEI.
Reassured by the plenty resources found online, I just went to the first shop and bought a brand new Cubot J5 and a second hand Samsung SM-G532F - Galaxy Grand Prime Plus.
Then I spent 2 days trying to root each one of the devices to no avail. I swear, that was 2 days straight.
Maybe I'm not skilled enough, maybe I'm just too stupid.
So I decided to post for your help, and ask the question in the subject: I need to buy more than one device, so budget is of utmost importance.
What is the easiest device to root in 2020, that I can buy on a budget, with enough resources to get to my ultimate goal i.e. easy and repetitive IMEI changing?
I'm too stupid to do anything complex. Rooting straight from the developer mode on the phone would be the best solution. Anything above that causes headaches
Thanks for your support!!
