Idle drain issues on custom ROMs - Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Questions & Answers

Hello all,
I tried all the custom ROMs available and they seem to have a high idle drain. I am loosing usually 10-20% per day which is extremely high in my opinion.
The Paranoid Android and Arter97's software collection seems to be slightly better but that is Android Pie based.
Is Android 10 the actual problem for the drain? Do you have any suggestions on how to fix it?
I never tried MIUI so I do not know how is the idle drain on the official OS but I had a Lenovo Tab 4 8" plus before and it was barely loosing 1% per day.
I hope I can find a good setup because at the moment there are not many options for a good 8" tablet. Even the Mediapad M6 8.4" is not produced anymore.
Any feedback is welcome. Thanks!
Edit: I forgot to mention that I use f2fs partitions on data and cache. I am not sure if that could cause any issue but on other devices I never noticed battery drain because of it.

yes. I'm facing same issue too. performance is owesome but idle battery got problem. have been try all android 10 for clover. all of them have the same issue . I don't think android 10 causes the problem because my lavender on miui android 10 battery life very good.

Turning off wifi works for me. When I do not need the device I just turn it off and the battery lasts much longer then when idle. have not really looked into it but I guess it is related to data usage or device not going to "deep" sleep

Yes, I had this issue with many custom roms, except Carbon rom. I've been running Carbon rom since I found this rom didn't have that issue, though it has less features than most of other roms

Yup, I second that. Also using carbon rom and idle drain is good

If you're using magisk then v20.4 have higher battery drain during idle. Try v20.3

Issues with battery performance

I flashed a rom called nexus experience which appears to be based on cm13 for my kenzo 3gb
Everything works flawlessy but the battery is terrible it barely make half a day with medium usage
I tried greenfy, turned everything to the lowest but no difference
Is that a bug with nexus experience or all cm13 roms are the same.
Can you advise me with the best way to get maximum battery time
Thanks in advance
I have this ROM Nexus Experience 10.4 and battery backup is great and I have tried many ROMs.
I also use amplify module for nlp (allow every 600sec)
I get like 10hours of SOT, but info in battery stats is not showing correct..

Best miui version with best battery backup pure stock

I read some comments that they used to get 8-9hrs of SOT, some said they could manage to get 10 or more hours on SOT, so ive been thinking on creating thread to get some info on what version of miui is the best for battery backup, ive used miui7 and yeah i got 8hrs of SOT back then, miui8 is pretty fast on battery drain, so can i have something on you guys? what version is good on battery backup?
I don't think there's a simple answer to your question. Everyone's use of the phone is different.
Playing games uses more battery than browsing or watching YouTube.
4G uses more battery than 3G.
3G uses more battery than WiFi.
Bad mobile signal uses more battery than good signal.
Setting the brightness higher uses more battery than setting it low.
Overclocking uses more battery than running at stock speed.
MIUI 8 uses more battery than MIUI 7.
So there is really no way to objectively compare SOT between users.
I never managed to empty the battery of my phone in one day, no matter what I was doing.
And as long as you come home in the evening and still have battery left, you shouldn't worry about other people's screen on times.
But do you even need to use MIUI? I have used both MIUI 7 and 8, for many months and I used to think that the user experience was pretty great till I installed an Android 7 rom here from XDA, Slim 7. Only then I understood what a great experience this phone can offer. I have been using Nitrogen OS for close to two months now, and not only does it have all the customization options I need, my phone is smooth as a flagship and I get 10-11 hours of screen on time regularly, with heavy use.
You could use a Marshmallow ROM if you really need a perfectly stable camera, but the camera works 9 out of 10 times anyway.
Custom ROMs are better in every way than MIUI.
Now im on miui7.5.30 battery back up is pretty good. I love aosp based rom but suddenly my fp breaks on NOs, dont know why, since then i get bootloop when i installed custom roms so i settled now in miui
I love aosp to but alarm dont work when turn off phone. And that is important to me.

Why does 8.1 have so bad battery life compared to 7.1?

I've been trying various 8.1 roms the last couple of weeks but all of them are having a lot worse battery life than what I had on 7.1 roms. Is there some kind of bug which affects all roms or is it some feature that uses all juice?
Yeah...the annoying network standby drain
..
Most of the oreo roms are now on beta stage right. Maybe devs could fix it with future updates

Have you also tried the Pixel Experience ROM? From a quick search, I don't see as many people reporting about battery life issues compared to Cardinal & Nitrogen OS and one guy there has posted a solution to fix the network standby battery drain bug.

Official ArrowOS (10.0) still being built regularly

Hi everyone,
I wanted to put this in the development section because it would get more notice, but I know it belongs here. I haven't tried ArrowOS for a while due to the build thread being closed/locked. Anyway, I've been playing around with different ROMS lately trying to find an android 10 version that gets the very low deep sleep battery usage that android 9 used to get. So on ArrowOS (android 10) I'm getting approx 2% battery drain per day if the device isn't used at all. Awesome.
I've been using CarbonROM and CRdroid which are both awesome ROMS btw, but on both of these I get approx 8% battery drain per day if the device isn't used at all.
So this thread is really just any FYI for anyone else out there like me, that thought Arrow wasn't still being updated. I've been using it for a day or so, and everything is working great. I haven't included the website link but any search will find it easily.
Hi ! I'm using Crdroid. The rom developer is already working on 11 androids. There is a future.
I can't write statistics. I installed the Hibernator apk. Now the battery is good.
In which version of the ArrowOs did you get these %2/day battery drain?
I'm using pixel experience plus for low standby battery drain. But it is Android 9.

I'm using the gapps build 2020-10-02, from arrowos . net
Should have mentioned this first post - I've got the wifi only version, and I use tasker to turn wifi on/off with the screen. No other battery optimisations etc
This weird battery drain start to affect roms from March onwards. Hope the developers nailed down the cause in the kernel sources soon.

Been running carbon rom for a loooong time. If left I lose 4% per day. Not bad at all. That's with WiFi and cellular signal on and always connected, plus Bluetooth. Seems fine to me
Maybe that has something to do with it - yours is 4g, mine is the WIfi model? Are you running a recent build of Carbon, and do you have gapps installed?

Yup, updated regularly with the weekly builds. Have gapps installed. Not too sure, but as a guess I would have thought the 4g+WiFi would consume slightly more power than WiFi only as it'll be searching for/refreshing signal.
Also with the Bluetooth always on, whenever I watch TV it connects and disconnects to my Bluetooth speakers that come on with TV. I'd have thought that would add to consumption too.
Definitely would think that wifi only models should use less battery. Still tho, others have the same battery drain as me.. .

@Wizballs Wow, thanks for the tip! I've been having the same problem, also with a WiFI-only miPad 4. Even with MIUI from Xiaomi.eu had the same problem. I also tested the latest LineageOS 17.1, CarbonROM, and crDroid. They all lose about 5% during 7 hours of standby with WiFI and Bluetooth turned off. Whereas the latest ArrowOS lost 0% during 7 hours. Quite impressive!
There are a few disadvantages though with ArrowOS:
- The system theme color, it appears there should be a dark orange color available (something like #e74e1b) but it is not available
- The AOSP keyboard has no top number row. This is something that crDroid has, also with the AOSP keyboard.
- The default camera app has no panoramic mode. I wish they could include the MIUI Camera app that Carbon ROM uses, While also keeping the default camera, which is better for most things..
- The LED light does not turn on while charging.
Cool I just thought it would be good to share. You are right about no led light while charging, I never noticed before. I use gboard for number row, and Google camera installs from the playstore, seems to work fine for panorama shots. Also haven't noticed any issues with theming, bit I've just left it on default.

I installed it too. Seems pretty much like the last build. Still no LED notification lights during charging or when notifications arrive with the screen off.
Might be enough to annoy some people I guess. I just keep using it because Android 10 plus great battery standby for wifi only models.
I've just installed the official ArrowOS 11.0 build. Dirty flash over AOS 10 successfully. Will test and report back, especially regarding battery life on wifi only model
Reporting back on Arrow 11.0 builds (wifi only model)
- Standby battery approx 3% per day
- OTA update works
- Charging led not showing
- Nutflix not in playstore. Probably side-loadable, but haven't tried

I also just dirty-flashed ArrowOS 11.0 (from 10.x) on my WIFI-only model. Also confirming that the LED does not appear when charging or for notifications. It has settings now to enable/disable the LED, but they make no difference.

Stable ROM for ANE-LX1 to be used as daily driver

How does LiR 18.1 GSI compare to official lineage 16.0? Are there any major bugs in either? How do they compare in regards to battery life and overall performance? How is performance compared to stock EMUI?
I am running LIR 312 as a daily driver. It the first few days the battery usage was enormous, it did not last a full day. That may be because of all the app installations, setting tweaking, downloads, etc. Strange thing was the battery usage was huge even when I did not use the phone. But after a few days everything went back to normal, battery usage is similar than in stock. For my use the performance is similar than in stock. That said that is enough for me.
As for stability and bugs I did not yet find anything that would affect me. After installing NFC patch I have working all of my banking apps. I do not need super-fast charging so I did not test that. The offline charging does not work, but I can not see why would I need that.
While using CAOS11 I noticed that sometimes I lost all phone connections. That did not happen using LIR, but on CAOS it started appearing after several weeks of usage, so I have to wait a little longer to be sure.
As I am not power user, perhaps somebody else could give a more detailed answer...
