I am about to buy this phone on ebay ... but I have some questions to you who are the experts and you have at least a month with this phone
1. in my country there is no AT & T network so I need an unlock him to accept the sim from my country ... is how you do it???
2. I see that there are many roms for this device, but do not quite understand whether the differences ... I come from using a Motorola Xoom, which was my only android device ... and as there is only the rom and kernel Tiamat and Rogue ...
for mobile phones is that this CyanogenMod, but I see several ...
which do you recommend?
I want to do is, to be root, a kernel that allows me to do the overclocking and have a rom that optimizes the cell and is stable ...
Truly thank you for reading this post and I hope not cause any upset ... I hope to be in this subforum soon ...
You need to unlock the Sim in order to use it. it can be done in 2 ways, either get the unlock code from at&t or a 3rd party (they will need the imei code of the phone), or root the phone and then use the app "galaxy s unlock" by Helroz.
Read each ROM's thread to see what they offer. Each one is made by a different user with a different goal in mind. Some already come with a kernel which may provide overclocking abilities.
Please note that if you install a custom ROM directly, you might not be able to verify if the phone is unlocked. There it's a code you can dial in the dialer of a stock ROM. Root to a stock ROM first, unlock the Sim, then install a custom ROM (if you want).

Hi Looking for a bit more information after reading for a few days on rooting and unlocking and best rom for telus i717d.
Ok 1st off ROOTing, do i really need todo a nocount root on the telus i717d? as a JIG will reset count anyways? i know its easier todo now. on 4.0.4 now so can use the nocount method. Just wondering if the need for odin, or can use sd card to root.
As for unlocking, is there a way for free, I know i can download from marketplace apps for samsung unlocks ( mostly galaxy, some say works others say no--really don;t wanna waste 2 hours than finding out have to buy ) but 90% plus posts here all point to provider or a reseller of unlocking codes......Anything Bell/Telus seems to be around $20 on ebay.....
Also, what is the best ROM to use, CM seems like standard for any android phone, looking for performance and most tweaks.
I also read that the i717d from telus has issues when unlocked keeping APN settings for certain providers ( koodoo for example ) ( is there a known solution for this ? )
Thanks in advance.
You do need odin to root. As far as nocount....it is up to you. But Canadian phones usually require another step in getting the custom recovery to stick. Look here:

If you want to sim unlock your phone for free then look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2124544
Best ROM is whatever works for you. Could be stock, CM, or whatever. 10 people will give you 10 different answers. Best to experience for yourself.
If you want to not have issues with your APN then write it down and you can enter it into the new ROM if not included.

Thanks for the info, didn't see custom recovery to stick issue in my previous research so will read up more on it.
The unlock linked looks easy enough.
I know what you mean about ROM's but seeing as so many out there I guess I will have to play with them each for a while.
Can you flash I717 ROMs on the Telus I717D? I'm having a hard time finding any ROMS to flash on my buddy;s phone. I use Nexus devices, myself so this is never an issue. So far I have rooted his phone, added CWM recovery and SIM unlocked it. I also flashed a baseband from the TMO S2. (Someone in another thread said it works really well for them, and it seems to get good 4G signal, though it also seems to have wifi issues now lol.. but I'll come back to that when I see him again)
Anyway, if you can't flash these ROMS on the Telus variant, can someone point me to any that you CAN flash on it? Thanks!
I must tell him to stick with Nexus phones lol

Will this custom ROM unlock the phone?
I have bought this phone from T-Mobile, but chose the wrong option when buying (not the unlocked one) and now the only way I could find to unlock the phone would be paying for the network unlock code (around $30).
Would anyone know if by flashing this ROM it will unlock the phone to use another carrier's SIM card?
Any other option on how to unlock the phone using another method would also be greatly appreciated.
No, the custom ROM will not unlock the phone

Already found the answer to my own question. I flashed the custom ROM to the locked phone and tried to place a SIM card in it, but still get the Invalid SIM card message and it requests the network unlock code.
I can also say that kitkat metropcs twrp backup works on the Univision variant and it works with a sim card from another country, thanks!!
EDIT: This ROM won't unlock your phone, this is another part of the device that is not dependant on the rom, to unlock you'll need an unlocking box like z3x, or pay for an imei unlock code, mine could be unlocked with 13 dlls from unlockscout, samsungs made in china.
What is the version 4.4 or 4.2?

Phone is now unlocked and updated to Kit Kat
Indeed, the part of the phone responsible for the network lock is not messed with by the custom ROM or the update to Kit Kat method, but I actually found a way to unlock without a z3x box or having to buy the unlock code online.
The phone I was trying to unlock is a friend's phone, but I have my own phone and it was bought already unlocked, and is the same model. The trick here was to find out that the network code lock was part of the EFS partition. I made a full backup of my phone (unlocked) through TWRP and restored it in my friend's phone. It did unlock. Then it was just a matter of resetting to factory defaults and performing the procedure to update to Kit Kat and it now is unlocked and updated. \o/

Heres my question, if the phone is from tmobile how did you get kitkat? Unless you did it with the METRO backup
cm version
Thanks. Looking forward for that CM ROM.
One potentially noob question: cm11 is based on 4.4 while this device is officially still 4.2.2. Would that be OK?
Yes thats why people started making xustom roms

I read somewhere that someone was trying to download KK update from T-Mobile this could be just a 4.2 update or they could be pushing it. Maybe new lights are shipping with KK as well who knows

There are many phones who are stuck on outdated firmware. Gnex, nexus s, htc mytouch 4g/slide all running kit Kat. Many many more examples. The Roms may not be stable due to various reasons (no source, outdated hardware, lack of Dev etc) it is possible
Is there a test that will show if a phone is locked or not. I hosed my efs partition a while back and had to format it, change permissions, and reset to factory default to get my Galaxy Light to boot. Does that mean that my phone is unlocked?

Yes, I did it with the MetroPCS backup. Tried to flash the kernel of KitKat straight from the T-Mobile system on 4.2.2 but it did not work.

The work I'm doing is based on the metro PCs released kernel source and device files which are 4.4. They have the same everything just different bloat from carrier.

I believe you are looking for an app that is able to test if the phone is network locked or not. I do not know of such an app. The basic test you can do is try to insert a SIM card from another operator and see if it allows it or displays the message of it being an invalid SIM, asking for the network unlock code. And you don't need to buy another SIM, just borrow a friend's, it will only take a minute...
Thanks, that's my little problem in that I don't have access to a micro or mini SIM like the one in this device.
Anyone know where the boot animation is? Or how to change it?

Greetings XDA Zombies!
Got the T399NUVUANH1 working on my T-Mobile T399. Having issues getting ViPER4Android FX drivers to work. Have BusyBox Pro and seems that it wont install property. The ViPER4 2.3 version says the drivers are installed but actually not working, and the ViPER4 4.x version I keep getting the drivers failed.
Appreciate any help.
Footnote: X Tether works!
Bummer. Think TMO watching XDA and clamping down on whatever loose ends they can bind.

Will this work on a galaxy light with Android 4.4.3? Does the build have to be the same?
I own an international version of the General Mobile Discovery, which has a vast array of ROM's to choose from. Mine is a version sold in Portugal, which works with all of GMD's 4.2.x ROM's, but not with all 4.4's, throwing an error when I insert the PIN code for the SIM. I have only found two 4.4 ROM's that worked, this seems to have something to do with the baseband.
Now, if these two ROMs work, I should be able to make other (and better) 4.4 ones for the GMD work, and my question is, what files from each ROM could I replace so the baseband (maybe?) matches and I will be able to use the phone normally, without the Telephony service crashing as soon as I confirm my PIN code? Flashing another baseband is not a solution, as this phone was based on the Gionee Elife E3 and then "converted" to a GMD via some flashing, which makes all its ROMs work on it. But if these two 4.4 ROMs work correctly with my SIM card, there should be a way to make the other 4.4's work aswell.
Thanks.
I've tried all the ported roms for the one max and they all are making my phone lag a lot and take all the memory for running, so I just wanna return to the stock
I installed a stock rom and it worked perfectly well except that it was made for the Chinese dual sim variant and so the sim card wasn't recognized..
So now I'm stuck with a phone with no sim card, if anyone here have the stock rom (rooted or not) please upload it here or pm it to me
Thanks!
EDIT: it doesn't have to be a Lollipop rom, any stock rom would be great.

There are a variety of these in the Development forum here. I could send you links, but you haven't said whether your Sprint, Verizon or other, so take a look there. It's only 4 pages. You should be able to find something. I'm assuming, of course, that you're bootloader unlocked and S-OFF.
