Having a little difficult in where all my storage is.
You never get full use to all your storage. For example I get 238GB of usable storage on my 256GB card, 30GB usable on my 32GB card, 7.4 GB on my 8GB card, 58GB usable on my 64GB card.
I can pull up dozens of examples cause I own several memory cards or devices with nand flash. What I understand is the unusable part of storage almost never exceeds 10%
So I'm applying the same rule to the v60. 128GB should mean I should expect to have 115GB usable storage give or take of my advertised 128GB.
I just formatted my v60, and maybe it's because I'm on a fresh install, but my device is telling me I have 95GB usable with 90GB free.
So on a fresh format, no caches built up yet, only 90GB free of 95GB usable, on a 128GB phone...
There are 25GB of storage space I'm missing... Where is it?
Are you forgetting to account for the space used by the OS and related bloat? My Verizon branded V60 shows 37 GB used by system files.
Mine shows total memory 256GB, free 176GB, used 80.48 GB, where system only is 29GB on European unlocked model.

Im not forgetting, I want to know why 25GB is taken up for it.
The last LG device I owned was a G5, it's uncompressed rom was about 4GB. The most bloat-heavy rom I've ever encountered in my life was China's Miui 11, which uncompressed took up 7GB.
Just how much bloat does the v60 actually have to need a 25GB partition? Are you telling me the v60 rom really is that large?! Galaxy S20's compressed rom is only 3.8GB
Why is v60's Rom 25GB?

Just a guess, but probably related to the new seamless A/B updating, which takes up more space than prior versions of Android. It partitions what amounts to a second copy of the OS to your internal storage.

That and also the other partitions. You have vendor and oem specific partitions. Some of those also have A/B slots. They start getting bigger when a phone like this goes to many different carriers as the vendor partition will have folders that each carrier can activate for their own use through a config file and some may also be location specific. In all I'll bet there are over 30 different partitions and many of those are quite small.
See attached screenshot from xda. Shows the OnePlus 6 had 72 partitions when they implemented A/B OTA handling. Google introduced A/B OTA with Android Nougat. So has been around for quite some time.

I think it became optional with Android 7.0 (I know it was Nougat), but not every manufacturer utilized it right away. I'd personally rather the old way to save the amount of storage used, but the main benefit is this ability to roll back if an OS update glitches.

That's the first I've heard of this. I thought only carrier specific files for a given version were on the phone.

I have 25Gb of available space but less than 2Gb for apps? I'd like to use all internal storage for apps and the external card for media. Any idea how I set that up?
I have a Galaxy S2 Epic (SPH-D710) stock ROM, rooted with the zermax kernel and fited with a Sandisk 16Gb class 4 micro sd card.
Problem discovered while installing Navfree. Got the error message "not enough space". So I can't install and move.
Settings>Applications>Maganage applications>All shows
112Mb used of 1.9Gb available.
Settings>Storage>USB storage shows
Total space is 11.5Gb and Available space 11.5Gb
Settings>Storage>SD card shows
Total space 14.83Gb (aka 16Gb!) and Available space 14.81Gb.

That's perfectly normal dude.. The system uses a chunk of the built-in 16GB for the ROM's use (/system, /data, /cache plus a few other partitions), and the rest is assigned to /sdcard, hence the 11.5GB (I know, that's kind of like false advertisement but what you wanna do ? Sue Samsung ?)
And for the external SD, that's also normal. I'm surprised you didn't notice this detail on the capacity of your harddrive before : end-users tend to think in "base2" (whereas 1KB=1024 bytes, 1MB=1024KB, 1GB=1024MB, and so on), while media manufacturers count in "base10" (i.e. 1KB=1000bytes, 1MB=1000KB, etc). It's a cheap way to reach the symbolic "GB", "TB", "PB" (etc) landmarks more quickly (at least, quicker than the competition).
Do the maths, you'll see that over 16GB that makes a huge chunk of "magically" disappeared storage, but it never was there to begin with.. Also false advertising there, kind of.. But we're all in the same boat here. :S

Yea, I understand that, that why I put "(aka 16Gb") as I'm referring to a 16Gb card but listing 14.83Gb available. It was to not cause confusion, guess I failed there!
The problem I'm having is, I need around 4Gb (apparently) to install Navfree. I only have 2Gb available to apps even though I have 25Gb of storage.
People must be installing Navfree, so I must be doing something wrong.
16GB is 16000000000btye/1024/ 1024/1024 = 14. 9GB.
So it is 16Gb and not 16GB.
No such 4gb large program for android. The program is maybe 10-20mb. And the 4gb is the DATA. You can store the 4gb in your SD card.
Accidentally sent from my Google Nexus S using XDA Premium
I just tried again and it installed with a file size of 15.53Mb. Weird, Oh well, thanks anyway.
yeah i was gonna say : you might find some bloatware on the android market here and there, but by and large it is still pretty much immune to this phenomenon..
A 4GB program is something you might encounter under Windows, but Linux ?
Sorry that my first post is reviving an old-ish thread, but the initial question asked hasn't been answered (and a search of the forum didn't help me)..
Is it possible to resize the partitions of the internal storage on my s2, and if so, how?
And whilst on the subject of the internal storage, can someone please clarify if flashing a custom ROM will affect files on the "USB storage" partition, or only the files stored on the "internal" storage partition?
Sorry if these seem like noobish questions, but I am new to this customising malarkey, and want to make sure I don't lose any data unnecessarily, like I did countless times with my iPhone...
nope, flashing a rom (either stock or custom) *should* not alter usb or internal sdcard storage. If it does, that's a surefire sign that the guy who cooked the said rom has no friggin clue whatsoever about what he's messing with and to steer clear from this particular rom...
It must be possible to alter the partitioning scheme to resize the internal storage. At least that's the theory, we're dealing with a flavor of linux here, and everything is doable with linux -and enough effort and dedication.
However, as this partition lies on the same emmc chip as the system, data, cache and kernel/recovery/bootloader partitions, I highly recommend *NOT* to mess with it in any way -not unless you have another smartphone lying around that you could use as backup while your borked SGS2 is shipped back to the samsung service centre, and you're prepared to spend some $$ over the repairs (since rooting is absolutely necessary for this kind of manipulation, your warranty would theoretically be null&void in the process)...
Hello,
I recently started getting not enough space when updating my apps, etc and when i go to storage i noticed that the internal storage seems to have 2 partitions.
- One with 1.97GB
- The other one with 11.36GB
Besides that i have a SD card with 32GB.
I am using SuperNexus Milestone 1 and it is great, but this running out of space is not working right for me... Shouldnt the entire internal memory that comes in the Galaxsy S2 be used as 1 internal storage...? It's been so long since i rooted my phone that i cant remember if this was how it was originally setup...
Any ideas?
Thanks.
That's how it was out of the package.
The 11.36 is for data storage, pictures, videos, random user data
The 2gb partition is where apks and config databases get installed.
How much free space do you have on that partition?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Right now it has 200MB free, but then it shows Internal storage 7GB free and SD card 20GB free...
I was just hoping that the ROMs would use/see the entire internal storage as 1 and the actual SD card as another one. But it seems like this is how android is...?
Is there no ROM that uses the entire internal storage as 1?
Its not how android is. Its how non-nexus devices are.
Nexus devices utilize one large partition for /data and storage. But with the downside that there is no external SD

Notice the part where I said DEVICES? Yeah that part.
It has nothing to do with the ROM you are on and everything to do with the damn partition table which you should not mess with at all.
Go to the ROM's topic and see that everyone else has the same layout as you.

Hello.
My Father has a Galaxy S II , and he is always complaining that his phone is low on space.
The phone is 16GB and has another 16GB MicroSD card.
Most of his on-board integrated 16GB is free, and his MicroSD card is almost completely empty, the problem is that this phone has a very small Android OS 2GB partition, and every time he installs an app it always leaves something on the OS partition (even after manually moving every possible app to SD using the built in Move To SD, and placing all photos and videos on MicroSD). So even with very few Apps installed his phone is always begging for space since essentially he can only make use of 2GB of his 32GB of storage.
So I have considered maybe the best way to fix this his issue, is to install a Custom ROM on his phone, which only contains 1 Single Partition for the integrated 16GB of storage space, and another partition for the 16GB of MicroSD storage.
Thus eliminating the limited 2GB OS partition. (basically make it like every new Android phone since the galaxy S2)
I have never used a custom Android ROM so this is new to me ( i am more familiar with PC's).
So my primary question before I start looking for info and procedures on rooting and custom roms for this phone is as follows:
IS it possible to even install a new android OS on this phone which will have only one primary partition, or is this phone forever destined to only work as it is now with a small 2GB OS partition? In other words is there a hardware limitation which prevents this phone from addressing more than 2GB for its OS partition?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

You can repartition the phone using a modified PIT file. You will be able to increase the Data partition to avoid the "out of space" when installing or updating apps. The tradeoff is to have a smaller internal SD partition.
I have done it to my S 2.
There is a thread with clear instructions on how to do it. You will have to learn to use Odin, but that will be very useful as long as you have Samsung phones.
Here is the link: [MOD][GUIDE]Partition your internal memory for better App management (Pit Files)

Thanks for the info.
Would it not be easier to just format the phone and start from scratch by installing a new custom Android OS ?
Will starting from scratch with a new OS allow me to set my partitions (just like on a PC) ?
Thanks again.

No. You must use the Odin / Pit file to modify partition sizes.
And yes, that assumes you will flash a new rom.

hi,
I flashed xiaomi.eu rom on mido of my uncle, it shows around 25gb of usable storage space.. is this correct?
on my redmi note 3 with slimrom I got 29gb free.
second question .. I flash the rom in twrp and wanted to delete the rom file after that. but I just can't find it? might it be that this file still uses space?
In the 32gb storage, system, data, and other things use it also. It's not only the space for media etc... And don't even compare other devices, because they are all different with different size ROM's etc..
Here it is lol i have only 1.5 gb left
Anyone know why if we install a custom rom, it's still missing 6GB that goes to "System"? I get around 24-25GB after installing RR.

Install the app "DiskInfo" and it will show you how much space has been allocated to each partition. On mine (Slim) the system partition is 3GB, and the data partition is 24GB.

Yes, mine is similar, but there's missing space. There's still 5GB that's "System" but we can't use it and it's not being used by the ROM. Should be leftover from MIUI. Trying to figure out how to get back that space.. because 32GB isn't really that great when it's really 27GB (then less system, giving 22GB usable).

I am not sure why the space is not being recovered. Perhaps if you posted a screenshot of your disk map, as reported by DiskInfo, someone might be able to give helpful tips.
On the other hand, you can try installing Slim. It might well recover some of that space for you. I went from stock miui to MultiPro, to OctOS, to Slim. Clearly, somewhere along the line, something recovered all my space for me. By the way, when I refer to installing Slim, I mean a clean flash.

So, I ran Disk Info (thanks btw, great app) and I'm thinking the problem is the TMPFS mounts that are taking 2x1.5GB = 3GB away. Everything else looks normal. 3GB system, 24GB user.

No, that is not a problem. Everything looks as it should be (exactly the same on mine). I wouldn't worry if I were you. But if you want to try something else, then perhaps you can try cleaning your installed system with SD Maid. It is likely to recover some space from app corpses, etc.
In Settings > Storage, "system" is using 25GB of storage. Does that seem excessive?
Running stock EU ROM.
I am not sure how it can be 25Gs. Mine shows 12 being used by system.
Mine is 15GB, but I always thought that it's mainly size of /system and /vendor partitions and that should be the same for everyone. Maybe it's time to dig into the Android source code to see what is being counted into the system category..
For me using 128GB global stock rom, with Dec patch, uses 11GB of system only. I don't sure if it includes both system and vendor partitions, or just system partition.
A slight difference in system storage size between Global and EU rom is normal, but in this case, it is quite abnormal. I don't know what the cost either.
Do you do any kind of modifications to your device before? Like unlocking bootloader, rooting, etc.
PKQ1.190416.001.v10.3.13.0.PFQEUXM - 64GB version, Dec patch: 11GB system
The answer is probably really in the source code:
https://android.googlesource.com/pl.../storage/StorageItemPreferenceController.java
"Everything else that hasn't already been attributed is tracked as belonging to system."
@barth2 - you'll need to figure out which files don't fall into any of the available categories..

I am rooted and have a few magisk modules. They are all small, a few megs at most.
Solid explorer shows my root is 2.9gb total and internal memory is 48.33gb total. I'll be curious to hear that other people get.

Any bug this build version.
Mine is taking 20GB
Follow up: I inserted an SD card and moved some of my files on to it and now system is down to 10GB. So it was just miscounting my files as part of 'system'.
