Is it just me, or for the rating of (3.2?) the camera on this phone is terrible. Has such bad low light performance as well. Wouldn't surprise me to find that the 3.2 figure was achieved by interpolation rather than optical rating.
Any idea why it's so bad?
3.2 Mega Pixel is indeed the resolution for the camera, low light shooting is problematic with any phone camera regardless of the brand, if you want to take good pictures in low light setting you need a very good DSLR camera with iso 1600 upwards.

the camera is cheap because the phone is cheap with a 5.o mpx it will cost as much as a touch hd, but is a phone camera so it will work for quick pics not for lanscapes and sundowns

Get a decent digiatal camera to do your job right. Only case i''ll be forced to use it is maybe a car hit on the road just to prove facts . But then again i always carry my small camera with me so not even then hahaha
Funny that my k800i was able to provide much better pictures, not brilliant but far superior and acceptable quality for quick snaps. The tg01 quality is terrible, and gotta admit even in good light it's pretty bad. Even getting it without being blurred can be a problem sometimes.
I personally think either some compression is being used unncessarily behind the scenes or just the camera application sucks, well to be honest the app does suck, you can't even zoom (as far as I can tell), or change the amount of exposure. Changing the exposure is a basic feature.
For a while I was ironically carrying around the phone I used to own just to take pics with, I can't even take pics of car parts without thinking the quality is naff.
I realy regret passing my old omnia to my wife , it took great pictures for a camera phone and it also had exp+-, wb, iso setting eek and a bright very powerful and very usefull led light! Great phone allaround.
Camera sucks? Any phone camera (with it's small plastic lens) can take better pictures than the cheapest of the real compact cameras with true compound coated lenses...
I think that camera works quite well to use to take pictures of interesting items in a shop, books, compact disc, and the macro works really well.
Any photo camera under bad light conditions can't take good pictures.
On the other hand if you mean that the photo software is too basic, I agree. No white balance, exposure control, and so on. It would e great finding a camera software better for our TG01.
Hmm.. perhaps my complaint is really surrounding the software rather than the camera itself, although I still think the quality of pictures leaves much to be desired.
The notes camera is by far the best I've had on a phone. There are plenty of camera apps out there that supposedly improves the camera. I'm no camera expert so I need input from someone who is. Do any of these apps really improve the camera or just add effects?
The ones I've heard are the best are camera 360 and vignette. Anyway, input will be appreciated

For me there all the same some add more effects. Stock cam looks great just need right lighting and a clean camera lens.
You can ask in the note forums. They would know what works best for that phone. Us 3D peons know nothing

The phone takes great photos.
i am a professional photographer on the side from my "real" job... let me put it like this...
it is a small lens, a small sensor, small everything. it will never be DSLR quality as far as actual image quality goes. it is lacking hardware. and unless those apps are modifying the camera drivers built into the Linux kernel, they aren't doing anything buy adding effects.
the trick is to get a good photo editing app. that's where your pictures come to life. and again, with digital photography, EVERYBODY uses photoshop CS(x) after the fact - even (and especially) when shooting RAW images.
some photography theory for you, though, is this... what makes a photo a good photo? do people typically look at a picture and get a chubby over the hardware that went behind it? or is it the photo itself...
your photos will be better with some brighter colors, sharpening tools, and just some down and dirty photo editing with a good program to accentuate what you are trying to capture and show to the person looking at your pictures. having an artistic approach to taking pictures is what makes them good.. photo editing software helps you accomplish that.
Yep, unless your replacing the the actual hardware its just different effects...

Well put. I tend to like my photos natural tho with no editing you get to see the true natural and the beauty it has. Rather then a shot that has been edited and no longer looks real. Everything in life has some flaws just like diamonds.

this is true, its all about re-creating what you see with the naked eye. however, it is all dependant upon the photographer as well, and their taste. i take a little bit more of an artistic kind of approach to it... so, i think of it kind of like art. the picture being the canvas, and the post-editing like the paint i guess.

I will say that I like Camera 360. It's not optimized for our screen, but it takes nice photos. Images with my stock app were dark and unfocused, shooting the same thing a few seconds later with 360 they were brighter and clear. Give it a shot. <---pun
So I was going to test my Smartwatch ZGPAX S5 vs an old Fuji Finepix 2650 (2MP) and decided to just test the Xperia Z as well and use the NEX-6 as the control image if you will.
Nothing scientific..just me wasting some time for a quick experiment!
The images have been named to identify the device and which APP was used to take the image as well.
This is under a normal room lightning condition as going into even lower light levels I do not expect miracles from any of them aside from the NEX.
I did a quicker test before taking a pic of a violin on a wall and on that test the Xperia really looked bad so I would have to do that again to confirm if that is the case. In fact, it looked so bad that I was expecting it to be one of the worst during this Cobra Commander test but it was not. I think the A Better Camera did the best job for the Xperia although closely followed by Camera Zoom.

That's kind of an unfair test. The NEX (which I own and love) is a DSL class camera for semipros. The rest including the ZU (which I own and love too) is kiddie stuff in comparison. I mean, the Finepix is from 2003

hahah the NEX-6 was more of the Control image to see which one got closer to it
I would say if you want to improve the low light performance of the Ultra slightly from the horrible compression of the stock camera, either go with A Better Camera or ProCapture. Pro Capture has a noise reduction option which takes a couple of images and processes them, and there is something similar on A Better Camera as well.
Or get a NEX camera if you really are serious about your photos :victory:
i wasn't too serious either but getting a NEX is good advice anyway. best camera i ever had, including several large canons. you won't shoot a vogue cover with it but for everything else there's IMHO no better price-performance-ratio.
Oh yes, the NEX lineup is outstanding. I have seen some pros mixing their PRO camera pics with the NEX and you cant really tell which is which ...quite impressive!
BTW, I just tested a HTC Amaze with the 8MP camera which when it came out seem to have been received positively and dare I say the Ultra actually looks better!
Testing without the flash benefit of course which is sort of cheating I guess lol

Just added the HTC Amaze also an 8MP camera.
Just a small update.
Added another pic with stock camera but ISO 50 and I will say, it looks pretty good to me. In fact, when its possible to use that type of ISO without blurring the image, I would go for the stock camera.

The problem is with my HTC One X+ not taking 8MP camera (and apps not recognizing the camera as 8MP)... including the main stock HTC One X+ camera app... or so it seems. I've tried Camera Zoom FX which recognizes up to 8MP and it went up to 5.1MP for my camera... a different app went up to 6MP, but mostly it's 5MP (as the best quality for my camera).
All my pictures that I take are very noisy and not clear (file size anywhere between .6 - 1.2MB)... that is not good. Resolution is 3264x1840 (or vise versa if it's vertical).
I don't know what the deal might be... is the camera failing on me (Camera on my previous Samsung Galaxy S3 failed completely... wouldn't open at all)... don't know how the cameras seem to die on me... I do take a lot of pictures, but most of the pictures I've taken are bad quality and very noisy... really really really disappointing since I value the camera a lot... I chose this phone for the 8MP (was afraid of the 4 UltraPixels of One so I went with regular 8MP)... now I regret, seen I'm getting a terrible quality 5MP pictures. (I've seen 5MP phone cameras take MUCH better photos then my "8MP" camera).

Also the noisy pictures thing may be caused by the fact that the back cover of the camera has a coating that gets scratched really easy and you should remove it, search in the Q&A forum on how to.
The "8MP camera bug" is one of many annoying bugs introduced in the only HOX+ update. The problem is that HTC messed one file in which there are available photo size options. That way NO external camera app will use full 8 MP. Only 5, 5.1 or 6 (square) MP. However, the stock camera should take full 8MP pictures, I can prove it. Check camera options.
This bug can be fixed if you have root access. I found a tutorial about this here at XDA, but after many, many google searches and I have no idea where it is now.
Install zero compression mod, lyaporta camera mod, 8mp photos are in 4:3, pretty sure widescreen or 16:9 option is only 6mp, as it crops the top and bottom instead of making the sides wider.

Sorry, I can't seem to find the lyaporta camera mod anywhere on XDA... I found a few posts that refers to it, but can't find anything else.
Is this the zero compression mod? If so, how do I flash it? Just put it on my sdcard and install it VIA TWRP? Also, how could I make a back-up of the current camera library? (I use sense 5 and the stock one that they offer there is for sense 4... or does it not matter and I can update it back to be compatible with sense 5?)

Well, I tried that zero compression mod thing that I linked above and it does make the file size larger (also changed crop to regular and resolution to 4:3) and the image seems to be a little bit better but if you zoom in it's so noisy, it's just bad...

Flash the zero compression driver that disables the noise reduction rubbish that HTC implements (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2339226). Camera Mod is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2221815, it`s in the modpack , you can install without other mods, it improves image quality by a good deal. How old is the phone, my phone started developing hazy, blurry photos that had a ridiculous amount of bloom in any lit area, I noticed how scratched the lens was, the fix, simply put a small dab of tooth paste and a drop of water on a microfibre cloth and rub the lens in a circular motion for about 5 mins, don`t use too much water cause it can get under the lens, now my lens is as good as new and the camera takes some darn nice photos.

The lyaporta camera mod breaks my phone... it's just stuck in the start-up HTC One logo screen and that's it... I restored to the backup I did before installing the mod, but it doesn't seem to work... maybe I just have to wait a little longer... I waited for like 1 minute on the logo screen before going back to the backup...

A camera is a very important factor for me when buying a phone,
I bought my Redmi Note 3 after reading some underwhelming reviews about the camera, thinking "oh well, how bad can the rear camera be?" - well, the camera is really under performing, very soft images, noticeable noise in almost every scenario, very disappointing.
My question is that,
Is it really a hardware issue, or just poor camera algorithms coding?
if the former, I will just look for another phone and sell mine,
otherwise, I will (try to) wait patiently until the appropriate software update will come

Camera is nothing but decent , specially at natural light conditions.it seems great at night condition without flash due to low aperture.miui 8 greatly improved my camera experience.i found alomost zero noise in night shots. Enough for a $200 phone
I think it takes good pictures but I found that any kind of motion will blur the picture (even just walking and snapping a pic), so motion sucks, try taking a picture of a moving dog it will just be a blur, low light also sucks, but if you take still pictures under good lighting pictures look great, I think there is a soft spot for this camera it's just hard to find, also lowering the resolution to 12MP will take 16:9 widescreen photos rather then 4:3 photos in 16MP mode
Part of the problem is it never wants to increase the shutter speed properly in order to keep iso low. It tends to take most pictures at 1/25th or so, which is great for static but not for moving objects where you need a faster shutter speed to freeze motion.

low light shots are average.
daytime shots are great.
did you tweak the default settings?
which ROM are you on?....try to be on latest MM dev or china rom
also try using open camera.
at this price range, show me a phone which gives better images?
I tried all the tweaks available including using Open Camera, nothing really helped.
I ended up selling it and buying an Mi4C - the difference in photo quality is unbelievable (at a price of around 90$ new)
Had 7 different smart phones this year, and Redmi Note's camera was the weakest among them, for me it's very noticeable.
