Increasing RAM size - Xiaomi Poco F1 Questions & Answers

Is it still possible to increase the RAM size of the Poco F1? I have the 6gb/128gb variant and I want to have maybe 2 to 4gb more RAM. I read around that it can be done with a swap file on older phones but I already tried that and even added up to 6gb but it doesn't seem to get used. Is there a custom ROM or magisk zip that can be used for that? My phone currently runs on Corvus with NGK.
The reason why I want more RAM? Egg NS. My phone frequently runs out of RAM and the game force closes.
Thanks!

What are these apps and games you use?
How do you fill the entire memory?

I switched to LineageOS + NGK because it's more stable. So far I only have DamonPS2 and Egg NS installed after flashing the ROM. Had no problems with DamonsPS2 even with stock ROM. Anyway, I said before the app in question is Egg NS, a switch emulator. The app needs 8gb RAM so the Poco F1 is short of 2gb that's why it force closes randomly. I get smoother framerates compared to stock but then I still run out of RAM.

Well, short of swapping the DRAM modules for bigger ones it would be impossible, and even then who knows if it would work?
Although now that you've posted this question, I'm left wondering if anyone has successfully done this… I know that Scotty from Strange Parts (and others) have swapped NANDs for bigger storage, but RAM I've never seen.

I think ram is included in the SOC, which means cpu, gpu, controllers, everything else will be also replaced if someone were to upgrade ram, basically changing the core of the phone.

I'm trying to make it work like this one. A really old post from 2012 so I doubt it'll still work for Android 10.

In that case why don't you try zRAM instead? Depending on the kernel your zRAM (or swap, for that matter) capabilities may differ, but give it a go!
IDK about other kernel utility apps, but EX Manager has the options.

Ok I'll give that one a try. Just tried Roehsoft RAM expander and it still works but the game runs really slow when it's already using the swap memory. At least it doesn't force close now. lol

[Q] Do we have enough ram?

I've noticed the higher version of android I go up on my phone, the more ram applications use and the system itself does.
So my question is, when is it that our phones won't have enough ram to handle more than one app running? The max my phone can handle with 403 system ram using the devil kernel on JB is like about 2-3, then the app restarts or refreshes.
What about you guys?
Hmm I've felt that the higher, the less ram. I was on slimbean and I had 180+ available ram all the time. Well, when playing music it would drop to 170 mb, but its still really good. Right now I'm on aokp and I have music, kakaotalk, Google services, lookout, android keyboard all taking up ram under running apps and I still have about 160 mb free. Aokp has this performance tweak that controls how much ram will be free on every reboot. That's why I have so much free ram even though my total is only 378 mb. You should try aokp. Its really nice

My phone's on Android2.3.6. It has 366M Ram, and I've no lag or FC.
More Ram means less sth. else, as the Galaxy S variants have only 512 ram.
The phone may lose 720P recording on 403 Ram, other weird things may happen too.
For daily use, I prefer 366M ram.

Haha, sorry I find that funny. GB has always been slow and unstable. Froyo was good thanks to Bionix and Fishman. Even though GB looked nice and was fun playing around with, (LOVED Sensation ROM and RevoultionROM JVQ) they began to lag after a while and unfortunately GPS did not work. ICS was really nice but it had the EU bug. JB is (obviously) the fastest version.
Also, the phone WILL lose 720p recording on 403 mb of RAM, but thats why you use 391 mb. I dont notice a difference between ~10mb of RAM. I dont know why you would prefer 366 mb on gingerbread, (which is really slow compared to JB) as opposed to JB's 391 mb.
Android has been trying to smooth itself out so to run the OS itself should be enough. You can freeze the system apps you don't need so they won't automatically load themselves. To run newer games you will need a device with more ram though.

I must ask this as you said you were on 2.3.6 but didn't give a specific ROM name. Does your phone have a stock front facing camera?
I approve this message.
But guys, for example try using some of the newer app, there is also lag for some reason. And when i switch between apps, they take a while to load. Maybe i need to use zram.

Maybe you need CM7 and glitch kernel. Seriously.
The thing is Vibrant doesn't have enough memory to smoothly handle multitasking and avoid casual lag (especially when pressing the recent apps button) on v4.x.x OSes.
It's great that a lot of developers spend their time porting ICS and JB, but actually I need a working and responsive phone.
Think about it, if it were false then we wouldn't have any need for newer models.
Why buying a GS3? I can run JB on my Vibrant! wooo!
Of course this is just my humble point of view, I'm not partecipating in a political debate.

Yeah, I find it funny too... somehow.
By the way, there's a huge difference between 2.3.4/6 and 2.3.7.
Obviously the vibe isn't packing 2gb of ram like the US gs3 and note2 but I've been running PA JB for a while. The only thing that seems to lag is Google search/now/browser. Other than that it runs smooth! I have about 30+ launchable system and user apps. The key is to kill app back and minimize background processes
(mines set at 3). There are other ram management choices as well.
As I said, its no gs3 but for an almost 3yr old device this vibrator is buzzing strong!

I agree... for a three year old phone these things kick ass. Im running SlimBean 2.8 which is insanely stable and responsive and quick... I have no lag issues and no force close issues and my RAM is 277MB used and 132MB free, give or take, thats with Update Me, Google Services, Keyboard, and Facebook running. I can use FB, Slacker, any browser I want... never have issues and the phone feels smoother than stock GS3 IMO... I have processes set to 3 as well and have never had a problem. Just remember we only have 512MB to work with... :silly::highfive:

[Q] ATT HOX+ Available Ram?

Loving my device so far figuring it all out for a first time Android user, very happy. Just one main concern besides little petty ones is the available ram? Even when i first booted this thing up out of the box with nothing installed by me the Available Ram was only like 300mb out of 1gb! Telling me a couple apps running stock (which is only like 20-30mb total anyways) and the Operating System and Sense eats up about 700mb of Ram upon a fresh Boot? Damn that's pretty sad, no wonder why the industry standard for these devices should be 2gb! My iphone 4 which i came from only had 256mb of total ram installed. With all my apps installed, using up about 15gb of hard drive space out of the 16gb model i had, i still had a solid 210-220mb of FREE Ram upon Boot Up! Apple is still very behind in this cell industry but at least they know how to create an operating system that doesn't kill your Ram.
Anyway to have more available Ram on this thing? Figured 1gb would be more then plenty when purchasing this device, after using it now i guessed wrong. Now with most of the basic apps installed i average about 250-270mb of Free Ram upon Boot Up. Still think that's pretty sad when it comes with 1gb of ram built in :fingers-crossed:

Android takes apps out of memory when another app needs more ram
Trust me... 1gb is fine.. no need for another 1gb of ram
If you really want more ram either make an AOSP rom or desense your phone

So basically don't even worry about what the task manager shows as free Ram because the OS will make it work basically? Makes sense but still seems pretty hungry to eat up so much. Really love the Stock JB 4.1 and Sense 4+ so really wouldn't want to get rid of any of that just to free up some Ram. Would just think factory though it wouldn't eat so much. I'm sure once i can get this device rooted though and flashing a custom rom should help?

i think that´s because of android´s ram management.
Android doesn´t allow that there is too much "unused" RAM because "unused" RAM is useless RAM... (hope i understood that right as i read something about it some weeks ago)
but wait for a detailled explanation of someone who is fitter at this topic than me

Android does not use ram like windows. In android, having low free ram is a good sign that android is working properly. Does your device lock up or feel laggy? Exactly so don't worry

It's not eating the ram, the ram has been set aside for rapid access by apps. read this webpage, Its about task manager but explains how android utilizes ram. http://lifehacker.com/5650894/andro...ed-what-they-do-and-why-you-shouldnt-use-them

Oh ok, thank you. Learned something new today, really had no idea and makes perfect sense now. You're right though, no lag at all. I mean i don't know how to compare this device but running the game Bard's Tale with the HD download version on all High performance and having a few apps also on in the background, zero lag while playing the game! Really am impressed with this device thus far, just was worried about the Ram appearance as I wasn't aware of how Android utilizes it, thank you.
Is your phone lagging? Android does an amazing job at providing the RAM required to function properly.

Bump.
I'd like to know how much ram is available to the user. Can someone with an AT&T One X+ download Android System Info and share what the "max" is for ram? For example, on my 1GB GS2, it shows 836mb (user available).
It says I have 950 mb Ram on the android app management screen.

let's talk about ram management on Kenzo 2 gb

Hi,
I used to love my Kenzo 2 gb version, untill I found out that his 1,8 gb of ram are so so low. But, is that true?!
I mean 2 gb are the minimun requirement for MM or NG I think, but with miui, miui port, NG based rom (didn't try oreo, or lineage MM), custom kernel, anything the ram management is really really bad.
After only two days of usage, free ram became 200mb or even 100mb with no social media app (just telegram and instagram with no notification allowed) or anything. Doze, greenify, clear ram or not clear it, doesn't change the situation, used ram increase day by day untill the phone is laggy and unusable.
So you have to restart the phone at least every two day. It's crazy today.
On custom ng roms the situation is a bit better but on miui, damn, the ram is so full that sometimes I can't even open the keyboard or camera.
Every 2 gb phones has this issue? is an MM/NG problem? or is a kenzo problem? is there something I (or we) can do to menage ram more efficently (I don't want free ram, I want a ram used in the correct way).?
thank u
Very good question, i suggest you make manual tweaks to lmk (low memory killer), it has helped my rn3 2gb multitask better on oreo
Sent from my Redmi Note 3 using Tapatalk
I have too faced that problem. It's mainly due to ROMs. Some ROMs have lag no matter which kernel you use or how much tweak it. I have literally tried each and every custom rom which are updated and found only some ROMs which have less noticable lag. Default miui rom, aex, RR by movzx, nos some builds and Oreo, and slim rom. On other rom I tried different kernel and when tweaked it to max but still lagged as hell. Even opening dialer app sometimes froze the system leave aside heavy gaming. This is really serious issue on 2gb because of which we are restricted to certain ROMs.
I too have a 2GB kenzo, but never had such problems...currently using NOS Oreo and it is fluid & fast. Same on miui.
Right now system occupies around 700MB + around 400MB apps, rest is available. Never had RAM problems myself...luckily.
Buy MI device unlock bootloader next day > Flash custom ROMs > RIP ****UI
That is the main reason why I've changed my Kenzo 2gb. I wasn't able to use miui at all with this phone, app killing and lagging was a daily basis. So I used the most Ram friendly rom with this phone, but still keeping more than 3 apps in the memory was a problem.
Idk, but maybe it's because of the x64 architecture (similar to pc, this architecture uses more ram). I had many phones with 32gb and x32 architecture and ram was never an issue.
So trust me, I've tried everything to improve the ram efficiency, but not much has changed. The only solution for me to change the phone.

3gb ram 32gb ROM vs 4gb ram 64gb ROM

There's this 2 versions of Redmi 5 Plus ...
The 4gb version worths the invested money?
My doubts are:
- The 3gb ram can handle reopening browser (mainly Opera to me but could be Chrome aswell just for the sake of testing) without reloading the webpages each time??? If so please tell me..
- Should I choose the 4gb ? It has some other major improvements over the 3gb ram ?
I just don't want to waste money for no significant improvements. Thanks! :fingers-crossed:
I think it's more important 64gb storage than 4gb of ram
For me 32gb it's not enough.
There are many videos showing the miui memory management problems on YouTube. (look at the comparative VS videos).
3gb is fine with stock Android. But miui has very bad ram management. It closes background apps much faster than stock Android. So, if you need multi-tasking it's advised to go with the 4gb version.
(4gb on miui seems worse than 3gb on stock.)
I'm on 4gb and happy with it so far.
Edit: That being said, if you come back to your browser after open perhaps 4 or 5 apps you should be fine with 3gb. But get the 4gb to be on the safe side. The price difference is only 20 bucks anyway, so definitely worth it).

It would be nice if I get paid in dollars, lol.. 20$ turn into 100 R$ (my local currency) .. comparable to 100 dollars to someone who lives abroad. It worths the investment anyway..
I have a Xiaomi Mi Note 2 (but it fell off to the ground yesterday and stopped working :crying .. Before I had a Lenovo Zuk Z2.. both with 4gb ram... I ditched MIUI in favor of Resurrection Remix .. What I can remember is that disabling MIUI Ram Management in settings it can hold a lot of apps in memory.. but as I said, my experience was not with 3gb ram..
Those comparison videos are not clear if they disabled the MIUI Ram Management.. so it would probably hold the apps opened in background (even with 3gb ram)... With 4gb it's garanteed to do the job..
If anyone here with 3gb ram can tell us your experiences regarding ram management and disabling that option, I would appreciate..
For those who are in doubt over prioritizing memory VS storage.. I would go for memory.. as the storage is upgradeable (with sd card).. memory is not.. and it gives you more time range to spend with the chosen device :good:

Dear seems rom post has been deleted don't know the reason but the rom was super awsom May be some one have its link today I accidentally deleted the rom other wise will upload on some sharing site.
been using the 3gb for some time now... it good for multitasking. 4gb is an overkill. you should go with the 4gb variant mostly because its 64gb memory, I don't think you'll notice a performance difference in because of the increased ram, tho it's always nice to have more ram; you never know when you might actually need it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thread was closed because the Rom contained a pirated warez app.

Which one? Can you elaborate
I don't know, never used the rom. I've just read that some xda crew member closed the thread because of warez.

RN3Pro consistantly lagging, no matter what rom it runs

Hello!
Recently I have been having issues with my phone. I have already tried multiple oreo roms from "The best gaming rom" thread, but none of them worked perfectly for over a month. Every one started to lag, and randomly crash/restart without SIM PIN input (right to the lock screen) when I am not aware of it at all. I am also having issues with camera which almost always crashes, when taking pictures - could it be related to lag? ... Anyway even with custom kernels, clearing cache and many other RAM management (greenify) apps, I am without succes. I own 2/16 model, but I always have at least 300 mb free RAM. Is my phone dying? Could it be NAND storage related?
Best regards!
Try with 1gb or 1.5gb of ZRAM
Ps: do you try update firmware with fastboot?
2gb ram phones just don't cut these days. The UIs these days are becoming very heavy, and too much for 2gigs of ram. Having owned 1 myself. I know they're only good for sometime.
Hey,
I own 3GB model and its lag hell on every oreo ROM. I did little research and come to know that most oreo ROM fails to get deep sleep. I tried Greenify but its not working. Then I check RAM usage and after opening few apps it express 2 GB usage and only 300 to 500 MB free left. So may be this is reason your phone lag on every oreo as It always use up to 2.1 GB RAM (as I remember, before it was around 1.6 GB on nougat)
I've got an aging Redmi Note 3 16GB/2GB RAM that has started lagging. It's just that 2GB RAM phones can't keep up in 2018. Your best bet would be going back to official MIUI 10 or old Nitrogen 7.1.2 Nougat for the 2GB variant.
Thank you for your answers. I guess there's no good ROM for oreo (yet).
+1 for the ones said before me: 2G of RAM is nothing, that was nothing when this phone was launched, sometimes I feel 3G is still not enough for everthing but I would be crazy if I had only 2G of RAM. If you go back to the original miui of RN3, that might be optimizd for the config, but forget any hope for using oreo or pie.
I own a 2gb kenzo, staying on a good N rom with zram at 512 mb, never had lags (I'm not a gamer).
I've sometimes faced some lags in O (rare) and P (more frequent). My impression is that 2gb varian has to run N roms.
