need some help troubleshooting network issue - Sony Xperia M4 Aqua

Hi
I bought a second hand Sony Xperia M4 Aqua E2303 and I'm having trouble making and receiving calls. I'm hoping someone can shed some light on what may be the problem.
The phone recognises each of the different sims ive tried (showing the network name in the top info bar) but none of them are able to make calls, the call just times out and ends without any dial tones.
The signal strength is always very low for each network so I wondered if there was a hardware issue with the antenna. While searching for some information I ended up on the Service Menu > Sim Lock screen. As each of the sims I've tried have been recognised, I assumed the phone was unlocked. However, the SIM Lock screen details are confusing me. This is what is displayed -
[X] Network: 0
[X] Network Subset: 0
[X] Service provider: 0
[X] Corporate: 0
]X] SIM: 0
From what I've read so far, when an "X" is next to either Network or Service provider, along with a number, the phone is locked with a certain amount of tries left to unlock it with a network unlock code. If Network or Service provider is marked with an "X" and has a "0" after it, the phone is hardlocked to a network.
What is confusing me is that every sim I've tried in the phone has not asked for any network codes, so again I am assuming the phone is already unlocked to all networks, but why is every line of the above info marked with an "X" and a "0"? Every screenshot I've seen of the SIM lock screen only shows an "X" next to Network, but why does every line of my phone show an "X"?
Thanks for any info you can provide.

It could be that the phone u bought was a defective one. But I will try to do some more research into that issue as it a unique issue and I never experienced this.
Update:- It might be locked to a carrier of some sort or it just could be some antenna cable inside the smartphone just came plugged off or its just some software bug.
Also have you tried resetting your phone like wiping the data completely from your Xperia? If not try that or you have reset it but its still showing that issue, well I cant help much after because I have ran out of what could go wrong on your device.

ROAMING while not ROAMING

Hi to everyone,
it happened something strange to me since I first switched on my SmartFlip:
while being in my country and using a local operator SIM, as soon as I switched on my phone, the ROAMING icon appeared and I was not able to let it go (it is present even while using GPRS connection as a G and a filled triangle).
Yesterday I had to move to another city (our Capital City, ROME) and when I switched it on again after the flight, the roaming icon was gone, even during GPRS connection.
I thought I somehow solved my problem, but after switching it on again after the flight back, it appeared again and is still present.
I've contacted my operator, but they say it has to be something within the phone (and I believe them as I've used that SIM with many other HTC phones with no problem at all).
A friend of mine which has the SmartFlip too but a different operator (TIM), has no problem at all.
Does anyone reports the same problem, or ever faced such a behaviour ?
Thank you for your help.
Ciao
ROAMING: SOLUTION FOUND (but not solved !!!)
Hi to everyone,
I don't know yet WHY this happens to me (and not to other people, for instance...), but...
Well, I reported my phone always getting to "ROAMING" while it was not.
I've found that IF I place in the phone one of my two SIMs (I have two with the same phone number, provided by my phone operator VODAFONE ITALY, which gives this as a service) and the SIM is PIN LOCKED, then, after unlocking it, the phone reports being in ROAMING.
If I just remove the PIN LOCK from the SIM, then the ROAMING ICON is not appearing anymore.
I have to switch the phone off and on again to see the results, but till now (more than 10 tries), I haven't failed one.
I've asked some friends of mine with other operator's SIMs to try the same, but they do not report the same behaviour.
Is there anyone else reporting this ? And with which operator ?
Thank you for your help.
Best regards.
I found this nice little registry tweak to remove the roaming icon (triangle) on HowardForums.
HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL\DisableRoamingIndicator
Set 1 to disable the triangle
Set 0 to enable the triangle
I now have a square E or G icon instead
same problem
hi mix,
i have the same problem. this behaviour happens only with sims of vodafone (128), with old ones (64) no.
this happen also with qtek 8310 with the same sim vodafone 128
Hi Bostik,
I've finally found (some time ago anyway...) that this is due to the fact there is the PIN code activated on phone startup...
If you remove PIN code lock on phone startup, then the ROMAING triangle disappears...
I believe this is a O.S. fault, not within the phone itself...
Should be checked with other machines with WM5 PHONE on (but may differ due to OS different builds...).
I decided to risk removing my PIN code... (I can recognise my phone being lost within minutes usually and I can then block SIM and phone very quickly).
It's annoying, but this is our life... ;-)
Happy new year.
This occurs when swithing from 900 to 1800 networks of the same operateor, its a bug

Been driving T-Mobile crazy about this Roaming Icon and its gone. Worked for my T-Mobile SDAII aka HTC Tornado and following this simple instruction( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1717878&postcount=3 ) now I don't get the Roaming Warning and Outlook works fine. )

I tried applying this trick to my Kaiser. My provider (Telfort) got bought by another (KPN) so now all Telfort users "roam" on the KPN network. Anybody know any other tricks I could try to get rid of the roaming triangle icon? Thanks so much!!

[Q] "Restricted access changed" + "Voice call service blocked"

Hi,
I purchased a Chinese Android mobile which has the MTK6573 chipset. It is called a Star A3.
Love the phone however I regularly see the alert/error "Restricted access changed" in the status bar and the signal drops off both SIMS. If I pull down the status bar and check details it says "Voice call service blocked".
What is interesting is that it is always the Vodafone NZ SIM card even if I swap cards between SIM slots. Other SIM is 2Degrees.
I've searched the internet but there seems very little info on this subject other than to say that some HD9 users have had the same issue and have Spice Mi 350n users.
Some suggest it could be a IMEI issue but I'm not so sure.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Can provide more info on request.
Thanks in advance.
*** Additional info... I've turned off my SIM data connection which was linked to my 2Degrees SIM and now both SIMS manifest the same error. If I re-enable data on the 2Degrees SIM only the Vodafone SIM gives the error ***
I have the same issue on an IHTC HD2 bought on fastcards with the same chinese android. I don t know what the problem is. Everytime I turn the phone on there is available network, but after 5sec it gets blocked for good. I only have one SIM card and data connection doesn't work. This is freaking annoying ...
Thanks for the attention
Sounds like a slightly different issue than the one I have as my phone will reconnect and I can use it but it frequently drops off.
Perhaps turn your phone on without the SIM card in it and get your IMEI numbers.
You can google websites to check your IMEI numbers are valid. Perhaps they are not valid and your carrier blocks the phone?
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Have found one other thing...
If you go into mobile network settings and change the network mode from say Auto to WCDMA only or GSM only you receive the "Restricted access changed" error notification immediately so I'm guessing it is related somehow?
It would appear the "Restricted access changed" notification appears whenever the network mode is changed from 2G to 3G either automatically or manually.
Images attached.
Occam's Razor strikes again
I had this same problem with an unlocked phone on AT&T network. Seemed to happen totally at random. It was driving me nuts, and nobody from AT&T could figure it out.
It occurred to me that the problem might be physical when the phone failed to recognize the SIM at all one time. Seems to be that the SIM card wasn't making good contact with the socket. I put a few pieces of scotch tape on the SIM card so that it fit a lot tighter and made really good contact, and I haven't had a single problem since.
(I don't know enough about it to explain why this worked for me, but I theorize that a loose or weak connection somehow fails out and introduces some kind of garbage data that the phone and/or network doesn't like, and it gets blocked as a result.)
Thanks for the post.
The problem is that between me and my friends there are about 5 of the exact same model all doing the exact same thing.
And ALWAYS when you go into network settings and change from say AUTO (WDSA/GSM) TO GSM ONLY.
Cheers
I'm curious to know if taping the SIM card so it makes better contact solves the problem for you. Does this problem happen with different SIM cards of different brands and networks or do you and all your friends have the same?
Hi again, tapping the SIM card does not appear to make any difference. I've also tried thickening the SIM card by sticking a layer of tape to it.
Seems to happen in low reception areas where the phone may lose signal and then reconnect to the network... I guess similar to how it is replicated by changing network mode.
Can you repliacate it on your phone by change the network mode? e.g. auto wcdma/gsm to gsm only
Hi i had the same version Star A3 iam frome Egypt and had the same problem i tried to put different sims from different agents but the same problem any person can tell me how to connect my android mobile with pc or from where can i get its driver
Thank you

I just changed my htc desire to a one S. Same Sim. It keeps popping up 'preparing sim' and 'restricted access changed'. Never did this in the desire. Only the handset has changed. It's not a poorly fitting sim. You can shake, bash, etc. no effect. It'll happen quite often. Could certainly be as others state when switching from 3g to gsm etc.
It seems I spoke too soon. My phone (Blu Studio 5.3) started doing it again. I can produce the "restricted access changed" message by switching from WCDMA/GSM Auto to GSM or WCDMA only and from WCDMA to GSM or vice versa. It's something with the switchover.
I have noticed that I get Restriction Access Changed message only when 3G is turned on. I turn 3G off and the phone does not lose the network any more. Yet to figure out why it happens...
This started happening to me today and like the post above mine only after switching 3G off does the restriction go away. This is annoying but I'm about to reinstall my rom and see if that helps.
Just had the same problem on my SGS3. Only thing that fixed it was a powerdown and a battery pull. Hope it doesn't happen again.
Same problem
I have tried putting in 2 different sims. i bought a fake iphone 5 from china. it is saying no service: restricted access changed. Please help!!!
I'm getting this today with a Nexus 4 running on O2 UK. I've never seen it before on any phone and have been on O2 for years.
I sometimes can't dial out and calls in are going to answer phone. Also, texts are not getting through.
Airplane mode off/on seems to work.
The weather is appalling here today (Snow) I wonder if it is to blame.
I have contacted O2 and spoke to a guy (who knew a lot less that I did about the device/network). Anyway, a new SIM is being sent out. We'll see.
---------- Post added at 03:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:06 PM ----------
Update. My wife's phone also not working (O2) although she is not getting the "Restricted access changed..." error in her notification tray.
I can confirm this is happened on my Nexus 4 also. cell reception disappears for a moment then comes back. after that all seems to be working as normal and hasn't caused any problems with me, except for the mystery and intrigue. does anyone know what causes it? I receive the notification "restricted access changed" and then when i pull down the notification bar to look at the notification, the notification is GONE ! it does not stay in there.
I'm definitely putting my Nexus 4 issue with this down to the heavy snow that day. It hasn't happened since.
New Nexus 4 here with t-mobile prepaid. Had it happen last night when I got home for the first time. It was showing 2 notifications, one for voice and one for data. When you click them, they go away. Saw them appear a couple more time through the night and this morning they were also showing.
No snow here though...

[Help]Phone Not Allowed MM#6

Hi Guys,
My friend has asked me for some help with his x10i.
He's purchased it from a market, and it was locked to T-mobile.
Its since been network unlocked by a local store, in theory to allow use of any network sim card.
However when you boot the phone with a sim card in, it comes up on the notification bar
"Phone Not Allowed MM#6"
It will show the little signal bar full.
Checking phone status it shows
Service state - In service
Mobile Network State Disconnected.
It appears to register onto a network, be that orange o2 ect.
But we are unable to make outbound calls, receive calls.
Yet browsing via gprs is working.
I have checked the IMEI with the T mobile. They advised that the phone is clean and not barred.
I have Tried different Sim cards i know are working.
I have Flashed the Firmware back to Stock, Tried the Latest Firm and a few other different combinations.
I am now Stuck.
Any suggestions?
Thank you

No Network Operator List and No Connection

Phone specs out of the way first: GT-i9300, Android 4.3 (via OTA), sim unlocked, not rooted, Baseband i9300UBUGNF1, Kernel 3.0.31-2320216, and the IMEI matches the frame.
So I've got a problem that's very similar to a lot of other people with one or two exceptions. I get the "Mobile Network Not Available" error message and I've tried the suggested fixes except for the Ariza patch and I haven't tried changing my modem. I don't want to jump into either of them yet because I'm not sure my problem is the same as all the others. Here's why:
When I go to set the network manually via Settings > More Networks > Mobile Networks > Network Operators > Wait till your device is searching for operators. Once the search is done it will show a list of Network Operators ... Nope, not mine. Mine shows nothing and goes right back to the menu showing Search Networks and Select Automatically. Tapping Search Networks brings the same result. If I set the Network Mode on the previous menu to GSM only, it takes less time to search, but still returns nothing.
Also, I don't have any bars. Not as in having bad signal, but as in there is no signal strength indicator in the status bar. Instead, I have a circle with a line through it next to the battery level indicator. I can not even make emergency calls with the phone.
I haven't found anyone with this particular problem yet, even though I've been searching all day. Perhaps I'm not searching for the right thing?
I've tried an old ATT sim and an active GivMobile sim, both with the same results. Both sims will register networks on other phones. I started out on 4.1.2 and did the OTA updates to get to 4.3 with no change in symptoms. I did a factory reset before doing the updates. I've never had a custom ROM on the phone. The IMEI doesn't show up as blacklisted on any site I used to check it. I even went as far as replacing the SIM card reader.
Could my antenna be bad? Could I have the wrong modem for the networks I'm trying to get onto? Any opinions or direction would be greatly appreciated.

"(via OTA)" means you have samsung's original ROM?
Reflashing a Samsung-based ROM fixed my IMEI problem some months ago. I don't know if you are on a custom or original ROM, if it is a custom ROM I believe that you already know the process...
Revolution HD 53 is a great custom samsung-based ROM and fixed my issues. Be careful on what you flash, if you're going to do this
Im having the same problem as you had. Just wondering if you found out how to fix your phone. Ive a samsung j3(2016) SM-J320FN. Got a new sim the other day and have been trying everything to get service, restored to factory setting but nothing seems to be working. Like you nothing came up in network operators. Sim works fine in other phones. If anyone can shead some light on the suituation please feel free to reply

Can't make calls (3 UK) - Solved

I just got a P9000 today and after a quick setup of the device via wifi I proceeded to inset my sim card from the uk network 3/three.
Now my network shows up when doing a search, and in the SIM settings it shows 3 UK for all options, but only the calls option is greyed out, and I am unable to make any calls with the phone whatsoever.
I don't get the no network message error (except when I am in an area with no coverage i.e. in my house) .
I've tried the sim card in both slot 1 and 2 to no avail.
I get 3 showing up in the notification tray icon which toggles data, plus it shows 3/4g next to the signal strength bar when I'm somewhere that gets a mobile signal.
It even show the correct network in the SIM status within the about phone section of android settings with the correct IMEI number.
Does anyone have any idea on my issues and any potential fixes/test/things I can try in order to get calls working?
Seems like my problem solved itself and I can now make calls.
Don't know what was/is wrong but calls option is still greyed out, though I made 2 test calls this morning (to Landline and mobile) which worked, then later on I made a call of a few minutes which worked as well.
