Terrible battery drain - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

I can't say its because of any one app. I have all apps not in use hibernated. The battery percentage goes down about 1 percent per minute while I'm using it. Anyone have any suggestions?

No one else's phone has excessive battery drain?

New update available this morning. Did not fix issue

Keep things like location services turned off when not in use. Wifi should also be off for same reason. I turn off those plus data when I'm sleeping, and loose maybe 2 percent over night.

Clear system cache.
Reset network settings.
Hard reboot.
Clear system app caches.
If still doing it clear Google data. Recreate Google account.
Or hunt it down using Karma Firewall, Battery Tracker, Running Services, etc.

Tried to clear system cache but couldn't see the screen because of fade issue. Ended up factory resetting by mistake. Nightmare.

Oh my... you should have backed out if not sure.
Well nothing like a nice minty fresh OS load...
Play with the clear the cache thing as this is something you should do after major updates or if suffering erratic behavior. It can cure a lot of issues.
After a reload and installing all apps/updates I always do it as well as once every couple weeks.

I'd love to, but i don't know how far down it is (3clicks?) In the list since I can't see the screen. I've muddled through and gotten it back but I'd rather not have to go blindly through that again. Thanks for the tip, though. Is there any other way to clear system cache?

Not that I'm aware of.

Ok, well thanks for the tip. I'll look into some way to wipe the system cache without going into reecovery. Wish me luck!

Why can't you see the screen to do it?
If the display is blown you might want to replace it along with the battery if you plan to keep the device.
It's on the boot menu; on my devices the hard reset option is always directly below it, of course.
The warning 2nd click deal with clearing the system cache always makes wonder if I... really?
Who cares about clearing the bloody system cache? It's like a bad gf.
Good luck.

I can't see the choices on the screen in recovery mode because there's something wrong with the screen. I think you're right, time for ANOTHER new phone

Price the repair cost for a replacement screen/battery.
May not be that bad... if you like the phone.
That's running on Pie?
You might not like Q... I don't; still running on Pie.
You can still find some 10+'s with Pie but beware they may have been upgraded to Q.
The 10+'s are still pricey; demand is still high.
That tell you something?

I actually like this phone.. Sucks you can not root or unlock the bootloader. But it has been debloated updated and it runs fine.

It may not be the display, in fact I find that unlikely as it's an OLED. When it started was it gradually or sudden with no apparent reason?
Found this:
Colors are suddenly dull/washed out
All the colors are suddenly dull/washed out on my S9 and turning off blue filter seems to make them even more washed out, I checked the Red Green and Blue from *#0*# and Red looks more like orange, Green looks very bright and Blue looks more like...

You might want to chase this down. Could be a firmware issue. A reflash to the original factory rom it came with might be the fix.
Sammy can do this.

Really? Refresh my memory(it's been a while) what is Sammy, samsung? How would I do it? Odin? How do I find what the original firmware was? I really like this phone and fixing it would be great!

It was gradual. At first I would just close the screen and wake it up and it would be fine. Then I had to close the screen, touch the screen, and wake it up to fix it. Then it progressed to where there was no fixing it. Maybe a month in total.

[Q] 4.3 Update

Anyone who updated to 4.3 STOCK, let me know if your battery is running out faster. For some apparent reason, I feel as f mine is dying faster than naturally or ORIGINALLY!
<<Scary>> I just wanna know is it just me or is it this update
my battery life is fine after the update, bone stock on my end. my device actually appears to have BETTER battery life. if you aren't worried about losing anything you could always do a full wipe. and start from scratch.

You're not alone with battery drain. My battery is draining about 1/3 quicker than before the 4.3 update, and I also am running bone stock 4.3 unrooted. I have been extremely reluctant to do a factory reset, but it seems that I may end up doing just that. I have stopped about 10-15 processes since the update and haven't found the right one. I just stopped most of my Google services from syncing. Only the ones that I know for sure I don't use such as Google+. Just did that today. My display seems to be eating up a lot more of my battery than before. If you do a reset, please post here your results.

guys before wiping i guess try doing a clear data on "google play store" and "google services framework" see if that helps

Ok. I can help you a little bit.
#1: You have "airview" activated. Go to Settings-My Device-Motions and Gestures and make sure that Air Gesture is turned off.
#2: I have seen this a lot. But I don't know how to get it to work. Mine seems to work.
#3: No clue
#4: Settings-My Device-Display- Scroll down to the More Settings Heading and underthat the 2nd one down you can check to "Show Battery Percentage".
I hope these help. I just said [email protected]#K !T and did a factory resest over the weekend. Pain in the A$$ trying to get everything set back right. I still don't have it the way that I want it. It DOES seem to have helped with the battery.

[Q] Unresponsive

Every so often, my G3 will become unresponsive. Usually happens right after the screen comes on - the interface freezes. Pressing the power button does nothing, pressing and holding the power button does nothing. I have to remove the battery in order to reset the phone.
I did search the forums, but was not able to find any similar threads or posts, was curious if I was the only one having this problem. Any ideas what might be causing this? Anyone else have any luck identifying root cause and correcting the issue?
Appreciate any help you guys can provide.

If the problem goes away on Dalvik, I would suspect you have some app installed that gets activated on startup, and isn't 100% compatible with ART. While most apps work fine with ART, not all do. Google has made it clear that the version of ART on KitKat is experimental, and the version on 'L' will be much different.
I'm on dalvik and my phone has started this. Not sure what I've changed in the last days. Running alogcat but since starting I can't reproduce it.
I ran into this problem a while back. Since I never used the LG Keyboard I tried to freeze and/or Greenify the darn thing but that caused the phone to just pause for an extended period of time when waking up. Apparently it really wants LG Keyboard to be around. So I just made sure it wasn't the default keyboard. The phone never really became permanently unresponsive; after fifteen to twenty minutes it finally woke up. But who wants that?
Reverting back to Dalvik appeared to do the trick. It's been a few days, and my device hasn't locked-up/become unresponsive since making the change. Normally I would experience one lock-up/unresponsive event once a day, or every other day.

I have had Google Keyboard set to default input since I purchased my G3; LG Keyboard left a lot to be desired in terms of performance and functionality. I never witnessed my device "wake up" like you described, but to be fair I never let it go for that long, either. Usually after 5 minutes or so my patience would wane and the battery would be pulled. And to your point, no one, and I mean no one, wants to wait 15-20 minutes for their device to return to a usable state.

Why are you trying to use ART,moron? ART is explicitly experimental. Use dalvik (like you're supposed to) and see if you still have lockups (which hpu won't, if you use the runtime that is already long established for running android). Duh.

Many users have switched to ART and have seen an improvement in performance. It seems to be device specific as to whether you will encounter issues or not. That being said, I don't think it warranted the "moron" name tag. Just trying to keep the forum friendly.

HAM2 quick snow flash on boot

Hello! I just got a new unlocked HAM2 from B&H yesterday. It works really well, but one thing that is kind of weird about it is that when you boot it there is a very, very quick flash of snow (like when an older television has no signal or the HBO logo snow) right before the Huawei logo bootscreen. Otherwise, the device seems to be working normally. It has the latest stock firmware installed from box and I have done no modifications to the phone. I was just curious if anyone has this strange, seemingly harmless glitch on their phone on boot or reboot. Also, is it something to exchange it over? I guess I was just worried it was a hardware problem or something that might get worse in the future. I know I have had Linux machines that do strange things in the past when initializing video on boot, so maybe it's just a software issue with the stock ROM. Thanks so much.
Weird. I've never heard of this before.
If you just got it, maybe you could try doing a reset? Resets have fixed some bugs for me and possibly a few others.

Thanks so much for your response. I just tried a reset but no luck. I used the VOL UP plus POWER method on boot to do it. I just posted a few screenshots of a video I took to give you an idea of what it looks like. On the off state, two during the snow state, and one after the snow state (seemingly normal). Imagine it as a very, very fast flash. If you blink you miss it. Probably happens over the course of just half a second. Maybe it's something to do with the LCD panel initializing or something.
EDIT1: I also wanted to note that the screen does not do this when it goes to sleep or is woken from sleep. Only during the initial powering on of the device.
EDIT2: One more note, the device came with build MT2-L03V100R001C00B148 installed from factory.

By "snow", do you mean static or noise? The screen looks a bit staticy or noisy in those pictures. The only thing I can think of is maybe some of the animation images are somehow corrupted. The boot animation is just a bunch of .PNG images shown in succession pretty quickly. This might explain why you see that stuff in a split second every time you boot.
Same here, as of today. I've owned mine for about 3 months, and it just did the static-y flash thing you explained. I remembered this thread, actually, so when it happened I decided to come track this thread down.
Mine is rooted and tweaked, however. Stock ROM, unlocked bootloader. Everything has been mostly fine (except my phone learned a new trick it likes: "Flip the video orientation randomly when someone's watching youtube! Yay, upside-down!"
Other than the occasional tempermental quirks, it's been running smooth. So I'm not sure of what could be causing this. But if more people state theyre having this issue, maybe it'll be further looked into!

Sounds quite odd, never read about this until this thread.
As for the upside-down video, check your root tweaks or display settings.

It is odd, hopefully it's nothing serious to worry about. It'd be a shame if it were to become a problem, as I've really been enjoying this device.
And I've been checking about the video orientation bug, but I can't think of anything I may have changed that would alter it. It's very random, and seems to only occur within MX Player. May be limited to that app only. A reinstallation might fix that, but configuring the orientation to "force auto-rotation" within the App Settings module has ceased the issue.

Extreme Lag with Galaxy S6 edge - TMobile

Hi all. I am hoping you guys an help as I am about to go back to my Nexus 6 at this point. I got a 64gb Galaxy S6 edge shipped to me at the end of March. On the first day I activated it I got the pop up that there was a software update so I did that. Every single review I've read talk to how the lag is almost gone, no overheating issues, etc. I stayed away from Samsung for so long because TouchWiz completely destroyed the Android experience for me, causing intense lag and slow down. If there is anything I can't stand when using a smartphone it is lag. Anyway, it seemed to work ok at first but I quickly noticed that it would get extremely hot for absolutely no reason at all. It will also completely lag out for no reason. For example. I'll go to unlock the phone from the lock screen and the animation will show it was swiped but it will just sit there for up to 20 seconds before doing anything. Often it just goes back to a black screen and I have to press the home button to try and unlock it again. If I try to use Google Maps many times it just hangs there for what seems like forever before it will move forward to actually start the navigation process. Navigating between music apps is painstakingly slow. I have powered off the unit multiple times, closed all open apps multiple times, etc and it doesn't seem to do anything. It will work better for a short time and then does it again. When I try to launch the camera it is supposed to launch super fast. At times I just sit there and wait. It is extremely frustrating. The longest I've had it sit there and freeze or lag has been close to a minute.
It also always seems like it is reallllllly warm, even after just a short while of using it. Again, it isn't every time I use it but more like 70% of the time. It could be resting in my pocket and get really hot, for example. It makes no sense.
Is my unit boned, or is this a common issue? I asked my developer friend and he suggested I turn off animations, etc. but why would I need to do this? I bought the phone with some crazy octa-core processor and tons of memory so it should breeze through all of this like nothing. My Nexus 6 almost never had any lag whatsoever and I would really like to think this phone is capable of more than what it is doing right now.
Any suggestions you guys have are more than welcome. I really like the phone but am at the point where if I can't get this awful lag/hanging issues fixed it is going on eBay =(.
Thanks for your time .

Quick answer factory reset see if that helps if not take it back to the store
I have no lag at all
I do have Lookout Mobile Security enabled, but it is only using like 7MB of ram. That wouldn't be causing this would it? I checked online at forum sites and it doesn't appear as though it would.
My first (S6 not edge) was like that. Turned into a handwarmer, got so hot it was literally burning hot! Took it back to the TMO store. Manager could not believe how hot the phone was, the box was warm and the phone inside was like a hot potato! Still frozen on the white TMobile splash screen from where it locked and stayed for hours. The phone was never really right. Got it exchanged for an Edge and it has been problem free, hardware wise.
Sounds like you have a bad one.
The Nexus 6 is a good phone, was going to sell mine but I need it to work with Google-Fi.
As suggested above, I would try factory reset first. Mine is very responsive even in power savings mode. It's just fast. I leave animation on at the default 1x. Did you look to see which apps are running the CPU up?
before a factory reset, try to go into recovery mode and clear cache. I've found on the tmobile version that once i got into recovery mode it did something of a small update automatically (in reading the scripts) and that doing that and then clearing cache really helped my battery drain i was having- might fix your lag too.
Clearing cache and factory reset after the update stopped my lag.
The battery though, just sucks. I'm down to 35% in 6 hours with less than 30 minutes of use.
I'm missing my nexus 6 at the moment. I hope I didn't mess up buying this.

Guys I'm fairly certain this is just the typical 5.0.1 problem... I'm experiencing it too and factory wipes only fix temporarily.
Had same thing on my Moto X 2014 and went away with 5.1 update.

Hi there. Thanks for this tip. I went ahead and did this and it did a software update as soon as I went into recovery. I cleared out the cache as well and it seems to be much zippier now. What I have found with Samsung phones, though, is that usually they work fine for a few days and then end up going to hell. Thanks for your help and I will keep an eye on this. If it keeps ending up working poorly I will go back to the Nexus 6.

Guys I'm fairly certain this is just the typical 5.0.1 problem... I'm experiencing it too and factory wipes only fix temporarily.
Had same thing on my Moto X 2014 and went away with 5.1 update.

I really hope that's not the case since Samsung takes 10 times longer than any other OEM to update Android
Encountered a bit of lag again earlier. Cleared out cache again via recovery and resolved it. Definitely think I have a bum unit or something with this version of Android

I thought the main lollipop memory issue was tracked down to boot up animation and Touchwiz devices are not meant to have this, therefore the fix Google has made to stock devices has no bearing on Touchwiz. Basically the issues we have are Touchwiz related not Lollipop specific, though Samsung must be delighted as we all throw blame at Google it diverts blame.
One such bug is the*boot animation memory leak*bug which consumes greater amounts of memory during boot forcing the kernel to kill few process (might be core services as well) causing severe lags.*arter97*of XDA has found a work around for this issue and according to him*“the current Lollipop boot animation implementation does not releases the resources held to*playprevious frames”*which might be the root cause of the issue.
According to the developer’s research, almost all the devices (except for the Touchwiz based Samsung device) fall prey to this bug causing highly unstable UI.

Factory reset did it for me.

Question Battery draining bug (or pocket warmer feature)

With the latest firmware (61.0.A.15.35), having Gestures:Tap to show lock screen enabled causes the lockscreen to display continuously while the phone is in your pocket and you're walking. You can feel the warmth of the phone as the battery drains. Running pulls up the emergency dialer.
If you're wondering battery drain is worse when you're busy and using the phone less, this is it.
Lol, might even get warmer than my Zippo hand warmer
Seriously turn the display facing away from your skin. I disable emergency dialer... don't need that kind of excitement.
This phone has a pretty big camera lump.
A case might help. Yeah I don't like the phone hump growing trend.
I probably shouldn't say this but maybe those Samsung jeans might help...
I have horrible battery drain with the phone sitting on my desk (4-5% an hour). It's so bad that I tried to remove the SIM card to see if it's reception related, but it drained at the same rate over the day. I guess, the next step is to factory reset, and see if that happens with stock apps...

Try disabling all power management.
Clear system cache.
What you got now?
Try temporarily disabling Google play Services.
See what happens.
Try rolling back system apps to their factory versions if updated.
Unless you did a major firmware upgrade a factory reset will likely solve nothing as the issue will likely reoccur. Find the root cause(s) and correct them. This is a common problem on many Androids and is correctable. It will take some time, trial and error, deduction... to chase them down.
Each user and device variant are unique so there's no one solution that fits all even on the same device.
Why factory reset would solve nothing? I did not say I'm going to restore my backups. I was planning to let it sit for a day with just logged to my Google account to rollout hardware defects like a bad battery.
I'll try less intrusive things like cleaning system cache first though. Thanks for suggestion.
I don't see any crazy wake locks in better battery stats.

A factory reset may well get rid of it or maybe not.
If it does, what keeps you from recreating it a second time? Factory resets are useful for boot loops, large firmware updates, malware, and apps that altered hidden user settings.
For too many "techs" a factory reset is a painless way (for them) to solve a problem.
Once you do a reset you lose the opportunity to find, understand and correct the root cause(s).
You know the definition of insanity, right? It applies here.
My current OS load wasn't always smooth running. It needed to be optimized. If I do a factory reset, I know what to do now... otherwise I'll have a bandwidth/battery eating, hot running hog in my hands.
Or you could waste hours of your time going app by app and they realizing you have a hardware defect. Factory reset rules out a hardware defect.

Not at all. It could still be firmware or software.
All a reset does in put user data settings back to default. A clean slate for what you, apps or malware screwed up.
Any original factory load defects will remain... or if you reload, update or misconfigure settings and create the problem again. Which is likely if you don't know what caused it to begin with.
Putting it in safe mode helps to rule out 3rd party apps but not system apps.
Hot running Androids are common and it's rarely hardware. If the device has a specific known hardware issue then it may apply.
What I meant to say it's not user's fault if it's behaving like that with the factory reset. It becomes Sony's fault either way (whether it's factory software or hardware).
I was thinking about using safe mode as well.
Looks like HookMsgTunnel is the culprit. It's part of com.sonymobile.hook package.
BTW Sorry for hijacking the thread!
Data encrypt on new android could also be at fault.

Same here, battery life has been utter pap in the last few weeks and I can't work out what has gone wrong as it was fine before...drained 20% overnight on airplane mode the other night

Could you explain further please, what should I do with that "file"?
Thanks

That's the package name (essentially long apk name).
You can disable any package in android via adb shell https://www.xda-developers.com/disable-system-app-bloatware-android
I don't know what it does btw, so disable at your own risk, but my battery drain has improved.
