If you buy one from Best Buy (for example), they sell the 'Carrier Unlocked' version ($179). I got one as a backup device because the Best Buy display had the Google Fi logo printed on it. As far as doing the carrier unlock yourself, I have personally purchased Unlock Codes on 2 occasions from an online vendor. They send you the codes in about 5 minutes usually. Be sure you look up the codes before you buy the phone though.

For anyone thinking of buying this phone because they are using Google Fi, might wanna read this.
I saw this phone on display at Best Buy with "works with Google Fi" on the display. I needed a backup device so I bought one. I installed Signal Spy, which is an app that can detect and change between the 3 different services that Google Fi piggy backs on. Google Fi Network Switching does not work on this phone despite what Best Buy told me AND what was on their display. That being said, the moto g play will at least work on the T-mobile band of Google Fi, but for best performance there are phones made that can swing between the 3 service providers, Sprint/T-mobile/Us Cellular whichever has the strongest signal.

I looked up the app but after reading some reviews, can you be certain the apps report is solidly true? Can you verify with similar app alternatives? I'm also on Fi so 'm giving it a try with Signal Spy but I'm gonna check out other monitoring apps as well.

No H+ on UK 3 network?

After buying my One Max SIM free I switched over from O2 to 3, and then got my original number ported to the new SIM card. After the porting happened this morning I switched the 3 SIM card into the phone and thought I was good to go. However I'm getting terrible download speeds (~150Kbps) in areas which worked fine with the same handset on the O2 network. I've also checked with a friend here at work who's also on 3 but has a Galaxy S 4 and he's getting perfectly fine download speeds vs my terrible ones even when both handsets are sitting side by side. So the handset is capable of decent speeds in itself and the network is also fine with other people's phones. I noticed also that in the bar at the top of the phone display the network icon never cycles up from H to H+ (which it did when I was with O2) and I assume this is a part of the problem.
So, any other One Max owners here on the UK 3 network who can comment on their network speeds? Is it possible there's some incompatibility between the network bands the One Max supports and those that 4 use? That seems unlikely in this day and age but you never know. My friend did mention that our boss had a similar experience with his iPhone when he first switched to 3 but it settled down and was fine after a while so is there some weird 'bedding in' period when you first switch networks or something?
You could probably contact 3 support and check if your phone is supported

Aye, 3 themselves will be my next stop if things don't improve in the next couple of days but I was curious if anyone else was having any issues. Three do offer the HTC One so it's pretty unlikely the One Max wouldn't be supported but you never know I suppose.
Makes sense - Your case seems to be very similar to one i had with my provider. LTE wont work and i lodged a compliant to get it fixed

So did they manage to fix it from their end or did you need to get a new phone or something else?

They fixed it from their end. i had switched from HTC One to a HTC One X+ which did not have LTE and i unsubscribed by data package for 2 months which made the backend system de-activate LTE on my number and it could be only fixed by the tech team.
Cool, well, hopefully something similar can be done for me. I'll give it until lunch time tomorrow to see if it sorts itself out and if not I'll go into the store and ask them to look at it. The phone's basically unusable as it stands which is unacceptable so if they can't get it sorted pretty quickly I'll just walk. Luckily it's only a rolling one month contract I've signed up for, although I'm not sure there are any decently priced alternatives. I might end up regretting giving up my ancient and cheap O2 unlimited contract here...
What comes to my mind is that you could go to the phone testing mode and try to have a look at the phones capable network types and compare it to 3 network types
To go to test mode, you have to *#*#4636#*#* and there choose phone info.
Here is an example of what I see on my phone
Sent from my HTC One max using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
It was set to WCDMA preferred so I've changed it to GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto but 3 definitely haven't rolled out LTE and I don't even know if they have GSM on their network so I don't know if this'll make any difference.
Interestingly the phone number listed in that phone info panel is the original phone number (i.e. the number that was on the SIM out of the box before I ported my old number onto it) but that could just be hard-coded onto the SIM at some level and not really used for anything I suppose.

Nexus 6P on Three UK

Looks like, so far, Three are the only network not to have announced they are stocking the Nexus 6P.
I for one am hoping they are just delaying their announcement!
If anyone has any information regarding this matter, please post here.
Don't think three stocked the Nexus 6 at release did they?
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Three did not stock the N6 so very doubtful they will do the 6P
I think a few places never stocked the 6. This time however, everyone except Three are stocking the 6P.
They can't be the only people not to negotiate a contract to sell the 6P, surely!
Seems that way. No plans as yet to sell it, and as such I'd imagine it won't work with VoLTE on Three either.
Annoying as I've ordered one and am on Three.

Not good, any more news on this??
No. I guess we can safely say VoLTE won't be possible on the 6P with Three. That is unless we get the ability to manually enter the relevant IMS settings (like APNs for data), in which case it should be possible.
I have heard rumours that the inTouch app may be updated to allow you to make calls over the app, just like you can use it for calling over Wi-Fi without 'proper' Voice over Wi-Fi support.
In this way, Three will then (apparently) give you access to the 800MHz LTE network (which is available in areas where there's no 3G to fall back to for voice) once you're registered and signed in.
That too could solve the problem, but it's a bit of a bodge and by no means going to happen for definite.

When I first ordered the 6P i went into a three store and asked about the VoLTE and they said they should support it.
Remember they dont brand/lock the phones they sell anymore. Can't remember if they put extra software on though.

They don't lock but they do brand. It isn't like the old days, with custom ring tones, colours, loads of extra apps (free trials of aps, or whatever) installed but it's still a custom ROM with settings unique to them, from APNs to the IMS settings needed for VoLTE (and Wi-Fi calling).
If you want to use VoLTE on Three today, or SuperVoice as they call it, you need to flash the Three ROM on your Galaxy S5, LG G4 or the other few devices given access - and requiring a software update.
Apple is the exception. These are never branded and the carrier settings are the same on EVERY single phone. I do wish Google would do something similar with regards to carrier settings, as then every phone on any network could be made to work properly with all the available features.
Given this is Xda, it's worth noting that there are sometimes other ways to get a generic phone to work with VoLTE but it's not something Joe Public would be able to do, or even know they could do. And Three stores have been saying some phones are able to work that can't (and never will, unless they do this inTouch update) as well as saying 4G 800 is a high priority, when the reality is that it's the lowest and you'll only ever use it when 3G isn't available.
There's a dedicated UK thread here,

Slow LTE on T-Mobile?

Has anyone else made the switch from the Moto X Pure to the Moto Z?
I'm loving the phone but I used to get amazing LTE speeds on my Moto X with MetroPCS and after switching to the Moto Z it dropped drastically. I thought it was congestion or something but it never picked up, I switched to T-Mobile over the weekend and I'm assuming since it's the same network I have the same exact issue.
I average about 4.5Mbps down when it used to be at least 3 times faster on my Moto X Pure.

Over 55Mbps on H3G ITA here...
Hmm, well apparently changing the SIM to T-Mobile changed my APN settings automatically, but under APN type the entry was strange. I put the usual there and so far speeds are now 8-10Mbps. Still not too great but much better than what I was getting...

Interesting topic. I'm on AT&T. When I purchased my Moto Z Play from Best Buy, I simply took the sim card from my Moto X 2014 phone that I used on the LTE service for 2 plus years.
For 2 weeks, I had full LTE service on my Moto Z Play, then it just quit. I called phone CSR, no help. I spent 2 hours on phone with AT&T. No go, went to AT&T store to reprovision phone with new sim card. All I was getting before going to the store was HSPD+, after wasting time at the store, still in H+. Went to best buy, kid at store spent 1.5 hours on phone with AT&T, no help, but AT&T will call me. Two days later, I get text from AT&T, call this number.
I haven't had time to call back. All I'm seeing for service is H+, no LTE. AT&T seems to say that IMEI seems "compatible", but you didn't buy the phone from AT&T.
So much for bring your own phone. I'm pretty pissed about it since I HAD LTE service initially. I feel like the phone is being blocked from full service by AT&T because MOTO/Lenovo didn't jump through AT&T hoops properly.

Probably you are right... carriers can enable & disable LTE on single SIM if they want to... e.g. H3G in Italy charge 1 EURO/month for LTE!
In these occasions the best solution is... change provider!
Not so much that they "disabled" LTE for my sim card. The new sim card works perfectly in my old phone, LTE all day.
Is more a matter of MOTO/Lenovo not getting AT&T's "approval" for the Moto Z Play IMEI range. What sucks is both companies will point the finger at each other as the problem.
I have a finger to point at both! I'm hoping this resolves itself over time. Unfortunately, I have a family plan, live in the US, AND I'M NOT CHANGING TO VERIZON. If it was my phone only, different story.
What I should try is a sim from one of the MVNO's to see if I can get LTE again. But I see it as an AT&T problem created by AT&T because they get no profit from a new phone sale.
Anybody on AT&T getting LTE service? Please post APN.
Many thanks.
Only double check that LTE/3G/2G preferences are OK and copy working fine APN from the old phone as last tryout....
Did that as well! Copied the APN from my Moto 2014 with the new sim card. Had LTE on the 2014 phone.
Swapped the sim back into the MPZ with the 2014 APN & all I get is H+ still. That's why I think it's more IMEI "approval" related.
I was also thinking maybe hardware related.
What are the dialer codes for the MPZ?

Phone recommendation (just bricked my V30)

Just bricked my V30 of a few years. I was really happy with it and I -really- love the community that's still on this device. And I love the DAC (esp after the community fixed it after release lol).
Trouble is I understand it only works on T-Mobile towers when used on Google Fi. I wanted to switch because I personally have a venge against AT&T and Verizon, and I've actually had no cell provider for over a year as a result. I probably should have one though even if I'm on wifi all of the time
So... should I stick with another V30? I love this phone, but is that love blinding me to an option that might serve me better? (hackability, DAC, removable SIM and accepts an SD card). I just haven't been in the market for years and now I've gotta get it together in the next week before I travel to see family.
Thanks everyone <3

So you have Google Fi as your service?
Because I know the US998 V30/V30+/even the US998 V30S gets T-mobile VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling on US998 firmware, even rooted stock firmware, with a T-mobile SIM card.
Plus, Sprint no longer exists. They were the OTHER Google Fi provider. T-mobile bought them and threw the Sprint brand name in the garbage. It's only T-mobile now and T-mobile sub-brands like "Metro".

Thanks for the reply, ChazzMatt. Ngl you're a big reason I love the V30 forums.
I don't currently have Fi service. And ok, I was thinking Google Fi service still switched between multiple providers' towers and that the V30 wouldn't work out with those features. According to fi.google.com/compatibility the V30 ranks as "compatible" but not "designed for," which means (according to the tool):
"Stay on the best connection by transitioning among multiple networks"
"Automatically connect to secure, high-quality public Wi-Fi networks"
"Switch faster from Wi-Fi to data when Wi-Fi is poor"
"Protect sensitive information through a Fi VPN"
"Make Wi-Fi calls"
In conjunction with some older posts that were referencing Sprint I conflated the two. So what is there no effective difference between functionality of, say, a V35 on Fi (rates "designed for") vs a V30?
Either way sounds like the V30 is still the device for me. Thanks

For Google Fi, here's an explanation written back in early April 2020 before Sprint disappeared from this Earth:
In Google Fi's case, a trio of carriers are used — Sprint, T-Mobile and regional carrier US Cellular. For Fi-certified devices, Google says its cellular services determines which carrier has the fastest network where you happen to be and connects you to that one.

As they note, U.S. Cellular is a regional carrier. Most people aren't likely to encounter it. Sprint/T-mobile are the same thing now. So, realistically on Google Fi you would be using Wi-Fi + T-mobile.
My point about the US998 in particular was since you hated AT&T and Verizon, and their carrier branded V30 phones (AT&T H931 and Verizon VS996) work best (like to get VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling), the US998 was better with T-mobile service. For T-mobile, you can opt to get T-mobile H932 (but harder to root) or you can get the US998 (easier to root) and as long as you stay on stock rooted firmware you would still get T-mobile VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling. This would be with a T-mobile SIM card (actual T-mobile customer) and possibly even with Google Fi. But I'm not completely sure about that as I've never used Google Fi. But I know as a true T-mobile customer, the US998 is as good as the T-mobile H932 EXCEPT it doesn't have LTE band 72.

Question 5G on ATT/US?

got the phone yesterday. I really like it. I know it has support for ATT 5G based on some information online (1 out of three bands).
I have tried all the tricks in the book, changed the APN every which way and then contacted ATT to get 5G. They have tried all kinds of things but apparently it's not working.
Anybody else here from the US with 5G success? Curious to hear your story, better even if it's on ATT.
cheers

the answer is no. Maybe there are areas for which this phone might work, definitely not here. ATT support tried all their tricks with the IMEI but they couldn't get past their stupid regulated 5G certification I assume. I am switching - Any suggestions? I know that OnePlus Pro works on T Mobile.
cheers
I had similar problem. I htink that AT&T has done a huge bait and switch, and taken any phones not sold by them, and classified them as 3g phones.
My redmi note prog (1.5 yrs old) just went into this 3g mode, and AT&T support claims they cant do anything for this...
very frustrating.
any lawyers around for a class action suit!??????
I couldnt even get my problem escalated... they said forget about

Wow, I'd definitely report this to the Consumer Court. I just went through an ordeal with Samsung and they were responsive. It's a decent amount of work to go through this. If they truly move these phones to 3G that's a big foul. I would definitely switch. I returned my Xiaomi and switched to a Pixel 5a which works under ATT.
good luck

Setting aside for the moment the ATT tricks (left them in Feb 2020 glad I did)....it depends on what bands are actually being broadcast by the carrier in your area. LTE-wise I remember ATT in my area would only broadcast on bands 2 and 17. 5 was almost non-existent...4 was not at all available. Tmobile on the other hand is big on band 4 in my area, 66 and 41 (due to Sprint) and also on 2. I had a mi max 3 some time back and since it has 4 but no 2 and 17 it did not get LTE on ATT but would have worked fairly well w T-mobile in my area (then I was with ATT)
