unlocking bootloader and wifi - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Numerous HowTos say you must enable wifi to set the OEM Unlocking in the Developer options. Why is that? I have a new Pixel 4a that is supposed to be unlocked. The OEM Unlocking is grayed out, so if I enable Wifi it will magically ungray? I also have a Samsung S9 that does not even show the OEM Unlocking in Developer options. If I enable Wifi will it show up? (the phones are not with me right now or I'd try it) I'm curious as to why enabling Wifi allows for unlocking. Does something get sent out to the manufacturer?
Thanks.

i enabled wifi and let the 4a connect to a hotspot I created on my other phone. Now I can OEM unlock, so I guess it is some networking magic?
fwiw, though I still cannot get the OEM Unlock menu option to appear on my S9. I followed the instructions on https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/unlock-oem.3899297/ but the option still does not appear in the Developer Options. Maybe the date changing trick doesn't work anymore? I do let it connect to the internet through the same hotspot I used for the 4a so I know the networking works. Maybe Samsung does things differently? Is signing in to a Samsung account required? I added a google account in setup after Factory Resetting but still not seeing the OEM Unlock at all in the menu.

Jetstream hotspot?

I know this is not allowed by att, but is this something that can be hacked, or is it a hardware issue? Or at least tethering?
Guess it should be solved as a voice call functionality block. S-OFF + simple property modification. Without custom ROM.
I'm sure a hack will be found for it, once the device is rooted and such. Much like the Sprint device ROMs come with the Wireless Tether application, there will likely be one for the Jetstream once we can get the device rooted.
Greetings... Believe it or not, I "accidently" found a way to activate it, without root. I installed super box from the market, and when I was in the power save menu, the hotspot line said off, but clicking it took me to the regular settings menu and the menu to the right allowed me to turn it on, give it a name and set security! The odd thing is that the list of menus on the left is not highlighted as to which one you are in, so you can't access it through "settings," only superbox. There may be another way, but this works!
HI,
I am new to Android with my first device being the Jetstream. I would love to have hotspot capabilities, would it be possible for you o provide a stepwise outline of how you gt this feature to work?
Thanks so much.
Ok, I downloaded the program and as you said, I was able to turn on the wi-fi hotspot capability; however, even when I changed the SSID name it showed up in other devices as "HTC Portable Hotspot" and even if the security was left open it kept asking for a password. I changed the security to require a password, but when I entered it it did not allow me to connect.
Did you do anything else?
I think you are on track.... The password is your choice, and is only an option if you pick one of the two security protocols. The password would be entered on the other device trying to connect to the jetstream. If the name is fixed, I'm at a loss, didn't have that issue...
any luck with this?

[Q] WiFi Credentials Storage Requires Home

I noticed that when I upgraded to a new phone with ICS that I now have to enable lock screen security in order to store WiFi credentials. I know that this is an enhanced security feature, but I would still like to be able to bypass it. I'm not rooted at this time though. Is there an app or another work around that would allow me to bypass this security feature and not have to use the security feature from the lock screen?
Thanks,
Kevin

Where is option to set trusted devices/networks?

When I first set up my H850 I was given the option to set up trusted wifi networks and bluetooth device which would keep the phone unlocked. I want to change those options, but can't find that option in the settings menu. I'm running build v20s-EUR-XX. Can anyone direct me to where that option is?

Disable turning on bluetooth/wifi without unlocking?

One can enable wifi and bluetooth without unlocking the Huawei P20 Pro via the drop-down. How can I disable this?
Under my Galaxy S6 I have Settings>Lock Screen and Security>Secure lock settings>"Lock network and security" but I don't see the same or similar option on the Huawei P20 Pro.
Does anyone know how to set this so one can't enable Bluetooth while my phone is locked?
My phone with bluetooth enabled allows to unlock and start my car, so it's kind of a big security issue

USB Debugging settings wont save! auto reverts to disabled

When enabling the usb debugging option in developer options, the setting visually is enabled but doesn't technically enable as ive tried connecting a usb cable between my pc and the phone at this moment. When simply backing out and going back into the settings, the usb debugging value is returned to being visually disabled.
I have never come across this problem before and cant find any information about this online. I've tried using multiple different cables.
If anyone has any information or advise on how to deal with this issue I would great appreciate it!
I Solved the issue....
disable OEM unlock.
revoke usb debugging permissions.
exit settings.
return and you should be able to enable and disable usb debugging.... OEM unlock seems to lock other settings changes from being saved while it is enabled..
