Roku app with Expert Picture Settings - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So for the last year and a half or so, the Roku Android and iPhone apps just completely crash with "Operation Error" whenever you try to change Expert Picture Settings on them. Which makes HDR significantly worse on them, especially the 2017 models which need some serious calibration to look decent.
Roku keeps updating the TV software and the Android app, and the problem persists. They even have the gall to just close any topics made about this issue on their forums as "Resolved" any time they're made.
I'm guessing this is being done deliberately. Would anybody be capable of creating a custom version of the Android app that will let you use Expert Picture Settings?
Unfortunately, none of the older apps work. Any of them that don't immediately crash when opening Expert Picture Settings don't actually work with the newest TV OS updates.
No idea if this is the right place to post something like this. But since Roku is clearly not going to fix the problem...
EDIT: According to this Reddit thread
https://www.reddit.com/r/Roku/comments/jwg3rj
the problem appears to be the Android version. Android 11 devices will auto-crash. Older devices running Android 9 work fine.
I do not have a working Android 10 device so I can't test that out.
EDIT #2: Managed to raise my Pixel 1 XL from the dead. Android 10.... auto-crash.
Unlocked the Bootloader and flashed Android 9 to it. It works with even the newest Roku app! unbelievable that this would be the problem. Is it possible to fix this for newer Android versions, maybe?

Does anyone know if the official Roku Remote app works fine with an Official LineageOS ROM without Gapps, especially private listening
Thanks

Roku app version 6.0.7.241364-84 works for advanced picture settings and doesn't give the unavoidable "Roku app needs an update" message.

I'll try this out on my Roku TV. I'd given up on this completely after several years, honestly. Will update after I try

I literally just calibrated one of the Roku TVs in my basement. I also checked and there are a few versions after this one that let you access advanced picture settings and these versions also don't prompt you to update. I skipped ahead to 6.0.15 and that does prompt for an update so definitely not that version or beyond.
Anyways, I found the advanced picture settings page may have a never ending loading icon when you click on it with Android 12 (at least on my OnePlus 9 Pro). I dug out my old Nexus 7 and it worked perfectly. Also, I had used this on Android/OxygenOS 11 many months ago on my OP9Pro and it worked with no problems, other than the app sometimes wanting to freeze, but you can still get your calibrations in.

ah yeah so I have Pixels. I didn't have an unlocked bootloader on my main phone, but I happened to have my old Pixel 1 XL laying around. the battery LITERALLY died in under 5 minutes when fully charged, so it was worthless, but I kept it plugged in and figured I might as well try it out with this since some people with older devices said older versions of the app still worked for them.
On a whim, I tried installing older Android versions, and eventually it worked! The older Roku apps only worked if I had Android 9 on it. Android 8 didn't work with versions of the app that still worked with my model of TV, and Android 10 had the same "Operation Error" issue.
I'll give the APK you linked to a shot, but I have my doubts it'll work on my Pixel 4a 5G with Android 12, and I'm definitely not gonna downgrade the OS on my main phone just to get this one app working for advanced picture settings lol

Why don't you just use the old Pixel 1 and keep it plugged in while tuning the TV?
And the version I linked is confirmed by me to work on Android 11 (well, at least on OxygenOS). I have no clue if it'll work on your Pixel 4a 5g, but it had an indefinite loading animation on the advanced picture page on OOS 12.

No, yeah, I can do that. I'm just worried the phone will literally stop functioning at some point. I'm not exaggerating when I say the battery lasts less than 5 minutes on a full 100% charge. And any repair shop charges like $200 to replace the battery.
So I'm hopeful that I can just.... use my main phone, y'know?

Yeah. And I can understand the concern. If it does get unplugged in the middle of calibration, I will say that everything you entered into the TV so far is already in there...you don't have to save anything.
Lmk if it works on the pixel with Android 12. That would be even better!

[P4Wifi] Android 6.0.1,latest update of Subway Surf fails to run & Flashlight flash
So I wanted to report 4 problems with this rom, that I found while testing it, since yesterday.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-10-1/development/rom-android-6-0-marshmallow-t3266663
I am using an Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wifi only tablet with this rom the camera works but the flash does not work that is the first problem I had tried to turn it on, or set it to auto but it does not seem to be able to flash the light on at all so far under this build of the rom, I understand that these problems will be fix as the rom makes updates to the software.
Second thing is I tried to run the game called Subway Surf which displays a message saying it can't run, on the hardware it reads failure to initialize! Your hardware does not support this application, sorry! ,
The last version that worked on my hardware is 1.47.1 on 11 26 2015, the Christmas version displays an message saying it does not support my Samsung galaxy tablet 10.1 it has an failure to initialize! Your hardware does not support this application, sorry!. So I can't use the Christmas update. the app problem has to do with the update not the aosp version, sorry about that I downgrade the app and it runs again the last version to work on this hardware is 1.47.1 from 11 26 2015 .
this app was working under aosp-5.1.1-p4wifi-20151031 on the Subway surf version 1.47.1 from 11 26 2015, the Christmas update gets the message saying failure to initialize! Your hardware does not support this application, sorry
their is an bug when the tablet is shutdown and is pluged in charging the normal percentage numbers don't show up anymore since going to the 6.0 version, this bug I am guessing will also be fixed when a new build comes out. otherwise I have not yet found anymore problems that I can think of besides these 3 things during my trying the new build.
1. Camera hardware flash is not working at all on the build, so you can't really take night photo if you wanted to, their going to look dark with the flash option.
2. 3D video games like Subway Surf are broken and will not play. that one game called Fruit Ninja Free plays but it seems to slow down at times, making me think that its 3D related.
3. Kindle app had crashed on me opening ebooks a few times on aosp-6.0-p4wifi-20151211 build.
4. the charging icon when tablet is off, is missing its charging numbers that show the percentage of the charge, pluged into the usb port of the computer, have not tried the power plug but I am guessing it also would lack the numbers from this build.
5. it would be nice if kodi app could be made to work on our hardware , since you can install it from the play store, but you get an hardware message on your tablet saying its not supported has to do with no support for Tegra 2 based hardware.
weblink here, http://kodi.tv/download/ , their used to be an old version of xbmc app that worked on version that came before 5.1.1 before it changed its name, an port of it worked but crashed on 5.1.1 and maybe on 6.0 I think didn't test it on new version. our tablet needs a version that supports Tegra 2 support for kodi to run.
you can read these about why they say its not supported. so the builds that had Tegra 2 support under xbmc only worked with android before the 5.1.1 version, it always crashed under this version. not even sure anyway has an working version of kodi app that runs under this tablet, since I can't find unofficial support for it at all besides the forum links to the old xbmc app with Tegra 2 support that no longer runs with current android versions.
http://kodi.wiki/view/Android
anyway I hope reporting these helps the build so these things can get fixed for aosp 6.0 p4wifi models tablets. I can't seem to post under the topic page
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-10-1/development/rom-android-6-0-marshmallow-t3266663
So that's why I am posting this here instead, So I hope they read this and can get at least the 3D games working in the next build if possible, otherwise I may want to go back to 5.1.1 until I can play games again on the tablet, I didn't try to see if the camera can take the pan scan mode photo yet with the google camera app, but not if that's working under 6.0 or not, but sometimes I do need the flash so that why I may downgrade my tablet until this gets fixed, but I hope future builds will get these things fixed I hope, its good a good job getting the rom working in the first place, but you know I can't really tell the difference between 5.1.1 and 6.0 they look almost alike just one can play the 3D games, and the other one needs work, its a good start it seems stable and that's also a good thing about the 6.0 version.
This is the one that I installed onto my tablet below
p4wifi: WIFI only tablet
aosp-6.0-p4wifi-20151211.zip
I was using [ROM][Unofficial][AOSP] Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on version aosp-5.1.1-p4wifi-20151031.zip
before I did a clean install of aosp-6.0-p4wifi-20151211.zip the camera flash I think was working with that version, so when I clean install the new one I think that's when the flash stoped working.
to my tablet, it does run ok besides these small problems and the Bluetooth sort of works if you turn it on, you can connect to an Bluetooth audio hardware, my sound bar works with 6.0 on connect to it, at least on my tablet that worked, but on reboot of the tablet it does disable Bluetooth by default.

Mi5 Pro with locked Bootloader not working with Android Auto on 2016 Civic! Help!!

Hello ladies and gentlemen,
This is my first looong post here. This is my journey with the new Mi5. I own it for 3 days now and I desperately need help with Android Auto.
After 2 weeks of waiting, I finally received my White Mi5 Pro from AliExpress. I love everything about the phone, the design, the build, the weight, the ceramic glass... For your information, I have been a fan of OnePlus and I'm currently using OnePlus 2 as my daily driver. It runs Hydrogen, because I hate the OxygenOS. In the past I flashed MIUI6 into my OnePlus 2 and I absolutely love the UX. I think this is the how all Android ROM should go for. So I didn't want to buy the OnePlus 3 when it came out, and ordered a Mi5 Pro instead.
My Mi5 Pro came with a Chinese stable ROM of course with loads of useless Chinese bloatware. After booting it up, I immediately checked for ROM update and did upgrade to the latest version (MIUI 7.5 | Stable 7.5.6.0 MAACNDE). Then I realized I need Google Play Store to download all my apps. As an Android developer, my life has been with Google since forever.
So of course I searched everywhere on the internet for ways to install Google Play Services. I did find the package that would allow me to use Google Play Store. The package is at http://en.miui.com/thread-285420-1-1.html. I managed to install it successfully and got all my regular apps downloaded from the Play Store. So far so good. The ROM still has the some Chinese in there but that's OK, as long as I have all the apps I want.
Did I mention I'm an Android developer? I need to go to work to pay for this wonderful device if they come out with another model next years right? I can't live without Android Auto and this is the main reason I bought the Civic. So I got in my car, a new 2016 Civic EX-T (T is for the Turbocharge FYI) and wait for the ANDROID AUTO to come up. It never came. OK, maybe the permission issue? I granted all permissions to Google Play Serivces, Android Auto, Maps etc. Didn't work. I turned off Permission completely. No hope too.
To debug more, I notice that Android Auto works with the OnePlus 2 when the device is connected in the USB MTP mode. By default, when I plug my phone to my laptop, the default connection mode is USB charging only. I knew I needed to change the default USB connection mode. I searched around and found this wonderful app MIUI USB Settings https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.vincze.usbsettings&hl=en as it is highly suggested by a lot of people. Plugged in the phone to my Mac, launched the app, it showed a white screen when it's supposed to show a Setting page for me to select the USB connection mode. Nice, I guessed MIUI7 changed this page to another URI so the app couldn't find it. I searched again and found that for Android 6 device, the USB Configuration is inside the Developer mode. I went in there and changed it to MTP protocol. But after I selected if from the list, it came back to charging only. Is this the bug right there??? I tried to select PTP, and it came back to Charging only too. Looks like MIUI7 likes to be charged so much. This is why everytime I plug the phone to my car, Android Auto can't launch because it's always in charging mode, meaning no data communication between my phone and the car. Why are we not able to set the default USB connection mode to MTP?
I then decided to manually change to MTP after connecting to my car. The car shows "Loading...' (yes! it recognized there's an Android Auto device connected) but that's it. Android Auto was not loaded in my car's touch screen. I looked back to the phone and saw "Google Play services has stopped".
Being an engineer, I did not give up. I thought it's due to the ROM issue. I went back to the download sitehttp://en.miui.com/download-299.html#435 and downloaded the Developer version (which is MIUI 8). Re-installed all the Gapps and restored all data. Everything worked. However I Android Auto didn't show up in the car touch screen when connected. I saw the "Android Auto connected to car" notification on the phone but that's it. I thought the cable had problem so I tried with the OnePlus 2 and the car show Android Auto after 1 second.
Again, I refused to give up. In the past I flashed so many ROMs onto the OnePlus 2 so I wanted to flash the global version onto Mi5 to use the gapps coming with it with the hope Android Auto would work. I researched more and knew that my Mi5 Pro came with a locked bootloader therefore I can't flash anything nor root it. So I searched more and knew that the only way to unlock bootloader is to apply for it and wait for the approval. Seriously Xiaomi, why do you make the process so hard? I applied a few days ago and now I had to wait for the approval? Why can't you automatically approve it and not manually? If the Xiaomi team is reading this please could you approve my request? My UID is (catennacio UID: 3262109).
So I'm stuck now, can't do anything with the locked bootloader. All the Gapps I tried (including the ones with Google Installer v2) crashed when connecting to the car. Then I searched more and found this http://en.miui.com/thread-299790-1-1.html . Huraaayy! I can still flash Global ROM to a bootloader locked device? Nice. I read the article just to know that I need a god darm Engineering cable!!!! Where can I get it? On AliExpress! When will I get it if I order? Another 3 weeks!!! Oh god why!! Why do you make my life so miserable?
So I'm really stuck now! I go back to my OnePlus 2 and it still works with the car. The Mi5 is not bricked but it's sitting on my table as a brick to keep my papers from flying. I can't use it without Android Auto working. All I can do is to wait (which I hate) for the bootloader to be unlocked, flash the global ROM and pray that Android Auto work.
With the new MIUI 8 Global Public beta coming out on Jul 11, I hope the dev team could take a look at this before releasing it, because I can't wait for another 1 month for the Stable release:
1. Please fix the USB default connection mode to be MTP, or at least allow people to change to. In MTP it's still charging. For a developer like me it's very annoying to see ADB doesn't recognize the phone because it's in the wrong mode and I have to manually change it to MTP.
2. Please really take a look into the Gapps you are puting in. I've been through a hellish experience trying to find a good Gapps package that has proper contact sync, supports multiple Google accounts well, and has PlayStore download apps on LTE. I have an unlimited package data but somehow the Gapps I use "Waiting for LAN to download because of the package size". More importantly, could you please test and assure that Android Auto will work? Because if not, after my bootloader is unlocked, I will have to install another ROM that supports Android Auto properly.
I'm sorry if this is too long, but my original excitement with the new device is now gone. I have to go back to my OnePlus 2. If you want to help, please approve my bootloader unlocking application so I can still keep trying...
If anyone knows a way to make a locked Mi5 work with Gapps and Android Auto please let me know!
Thanks for reading. Peace!
I haven't tried Android Auto (and don't have a car anyways) so I can't confirm if my Gapps work with it. Some people on the MIUI forums claim that it works on their phones here: http://en.miui.com/thread-249360-1-1.html, so it may be a Gapps issue. I personally downloaded an auto-installer off the Mi App Store, which seems to work fine with the exception of my Google Calendar facing sync problems.
However, I have unlocked my bootloader, and if memory serves it took less than 10 days for the request to be approved. Check the MIUI unlock application page--if it redirects to http://en.miui.com/unlock/download_en.html, you'll be able to download and use their unlocker. You could also download the application first and try your luck, it will have you log in to your Mi account then verify if your account's been approved.
Additionally: the "Waiting for LAN..." message appears because MIUI's download manager has a limit set for mobile data downloads by default. Go into the downloads setting page and switch the download size limit to unlimited.

Do you have any update, I have the same problem.
Hi there. I'm using MIUI 8 global developer with Gapps preinstalled on mi 5. I tried everything you tried on a CLA 250. LOVE IT BTW. I'm suspecting it could be the cable. I will try and let you know.

I have a Kobo Vox Tablet, Its running Android 2.3.4 with a 800 MHz processor and 512MB of RAM.
I've been looking into various forums and sources to root and/or create a custom rom for the device.
I did try gingerbreak and one click root and both failed after multiple attempts.
Due to Android 2.3.4 the limitation of apps is ginormous
Basically, all I want to do with the device is have it setup on my desk, to play a few apps such as YouTube, Spotify, Twitch, Vlc ( potentially a controller for my pc)
YouTube is working. an old glitchy version, but it works, Could use a tweak to increase the buffer size though, Some stuttering on playback
Spotify is installed and works fine, however it is an old version which locks me out of the only feature I wish to use. I wish to play the songs on my computer, and use the remote on the tablet to view, change volume and skip songs.
Twitch. Google play store would not Install this. period. I had to get an apk of Twitch, I think it's version 1.4. It is not bringing up any live streams. So it doesn't really work. This is perhaps the main app I want to get working. If YouTube is working, Pretty sure Twitch can as well.
The tablet Runs fine itself. As soon as I turn off background data and keep closing Google Framework apps it runs significantly better.
Someone recommended that I would find a solution on xda forums, so here I am.

As of now, over a month later, I'm trying again, because I have a big road trip in a few days.
I had it all set up and was working on getting a charger when the device suddenly would not boot and now it factory reset itself and I'm having to set it all up again.
supposedly it will charge with 2A chargers, you just need to reboot it so the battery % "refreshes"
so I had it supposedly charging then the device farted and now I'm ready to throw it.
contacted kobo support, huge waste of time.
Rooting would be nice, but getting those apps to work is all I want.
Have you tried the kingroot app ?

I think so, but I'll try it again later today.

Easy Projection and huge fonts and icons - wrong DPI

Hi,
so I've switched recently from Samsung S8, when using DeX mode quite often and today's tried EMUI Desktop for the first time from my new LYA-L09 (UK EE EMUI 9 version 122).
And was really disappointed seeing huge icons and big fonts, which almost renders EMUI Desktop useless. TV shows 1080p (same resolution as for S8, hub Ewayfa). Even tried to wipe cache and finally restored factory settings with no joy.
Also spoken to Huwaei UK support line and was advised there is incoming heaps of fixes within month.
Anyone having the same issue?
Thanks
i want to try it with the HP elite x3 Lap Dock. Can say more on saturday.
Did you manage to fiy it?

Updated in a meantime to 146 and still no joy
Same for me
Hi
It all seems to have started after updating from emui 8 to emui 9... It was not like that in emui 8
I agree. Happened to me immediately after I upgraded to EMUI 9. Having said that, when I FIRST plugged my HMDI into my device after the upgrade I had an option pop up onscreen. It asked me if I wanted small, standard or large Icons. Having zero point of refernce, I chose large. When I saw that this was clearly a mistake, I decided to go back and look for an option to try the other sizes to no avail. There was no way to retract that fateful first decision. Never saw that option pop up again-- not after a restart, not after trying 2 other monitors and a TV.
Hi, no changing that has no significant effect, to get that popup again right click on free desktop point, 'change size' or something similar.
I think the only way, at least for me knowing too few on how the desktop mode works and which system files it uses, is to make the customer care aware and hope in a future update.
Upgrading to EMUI 9 - lost 1080p on Desktop mode also

2021 - Are there any stable ROMs for the Tab S3?

If I read the right page, LineageOS never officially supported the Tab S3 and there don't seem to be any other official ROMs judging by this thread. Are there any stable and/or well maintained Android 10 or 11 ROMs for the SM-T820 worth abandoning the dated but stable stock ROM?
I tried a few - no real use.
back to stock.
after setting everything up from scratch, meaning no userdata or such, it felt a LOT faster than before.
What helped me a lot was removing all google play services (with link2sd, I just uninstalled everything with root) and switching to vanced youtube (so I still get to watch yt).
For google drive and such I can use the browser versions and now without a trace of google the tablet is a lot faster. I'm sure that properly set up microg wouldn't affect performance at all but I don't have the time to reset again. If I manage to do it some day I'll post a tutorial, and in the mean time someone else can try this method.

Giving my Google passwords to a 3rd party app doesn't feel good to me. I switched instead to watching YouTube on Firefox some time ago, with the ad blocker plugins. The only downside is that on mobile, after a video ends and the next loads, the video goes out of full screen.
As to removing bloatware, can the device be rooted without causing issues with Samsung's stock interface?
I noticed there's an official Pie release. Unfortunately, I don't think I qualify for normal OTA upgrade as I have a Wifi only tablet and no carrier. Also, this is a demo tablet not intended for sale, so additional lockouts might apply there.
Does anyone know if the official Pie upgrade should work with the demo model, and have any experience with the Android 9 firmware from Samsung?
At the moment I'm away from my PC so I can't flash isn't Odin. I'm kinda itching to get the upgrade on my tablet and wondering if there's a way to reliably flash without even a PC to root my tablet.

Eventually, I figured out how to flash a Wifi-only SM-T820 LDU (live demo model) from Android 7.0 to the last Android 9 firmware Samsung released for the model. A good upgrade and very stable.
