Hi all,
WorldMax TV 4K is a popular Asian IPTV set top box which was originally sold and advertised as a one-time lifetime activation purchase of $300. Customers who had purchased the device have recently found that the company have now without notice changed their policy and have force updated all devices requiring everyone who has had the device for more than 2 years to pay an additional $120 per year to continue using it. This is both illegal and unethical business practice in most countries.
You can read the hundreds of negative reviews here where people are expressing their anger:
https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/worldmax-tv
It looks like several customers are trying to take legal action - however it is doubtful that anything will actually happen as the company is headquartered overseas.
Unfortunately I fall into the category of customers who are in this situation and am the not so happy owner of a now useless set top box which has locked us out from use of any apps - by means of a popup that demands we enter a renewal code. I'm not prepared to pay $120/year to continue using it as this is not what I purchased.
With my basic knowledge of the Android architecture and having played with alternative custom ROMs - I'm taking to the forum boards in hope of finding a solution to bring life back to this box. Hopefully the solutions we come up with here can benefit many in this situation.
Here is what I've gathered:
- The box uses a custom 'Worldmax TV Launcher'.
- The box appears to have a box ID embedded which is linked to a registration date. The launcher locks out when the registration date is older than 2 years.
- By setting the clock back under time and date, I'm able to continue using the device momentarily - before it syncs the time again. Even after turning off 'automatically sync time and date', the device syncs automatically when trying to set it to a historic date.
- I have access to Android Settings, but nothing else if I do not renew the subscription.
- After carrying out a Factory Data Reset and then skipping the initial setup, I'm able to setup WiFI and enter the Playstore before the activation check takes place.
- I was able to extract the following Build.prop and CPU info:

Questions
Has anyone found a work around to bypass the renewal? Could the launcher potentially be modified to bypass the check?
I have found this thread which mentions that Aidan's Custom ROM for S905X worked through means of flashing via the SD card method. Although this would mean we lose the use of Worldmax TV streaming features. Link to ROMs: https://bit.ly/aidansroms905x
What other ROMs are recommended as an alternative to the above?
I'm aware there are a few alternative options for streaming Asian IPTV (for example - loading a custom ROM and then installing an app like LiveNetTV or Mobdro). Does anyone have any other recommendations in this space?
Update: Managed to root the device using Ezroot for all S95 devices by Finless on Freaktab.
Downloaded AF+ Firewall to block ntp servers from auto syncing the time. This has allowed me to use the device freely without locking out by setting the time to a date prior to the expiry date - although Worldmax apps fail to work as they report 'Could not validate box' when opening them.
This is still not a perfect solution. I'm looking at what alternative firmware options I have available to me other than Aidan's Custom ROM mentioned above.

i always recommend staying away from "Lifetime Services" but im impressed your box is still alive, often the boxes are so badly made a year is the expected lifetime of some
this looks like an s905x based device judging from the build.prop
you could try my custom Android TV 9 rom for s905x devices, there also a android tv 7 version to try too, check them out here

Your custom roms will definitely be the go-to if I'm not able to figure out how to get the box going otherwise.
@shakti_nz Did you have any luck with this?
Any update on cracking this box?

Hey @shakti_nz , I myself have had this problem now and I've been trying to get around the timing issue to no avail. And yes I don't want to pay anything extra as I paid for a lifetime $300 for the box so I should get exactly that. Looks like you've made a much more decent effort.
Would love to hear any breakthroughs you've had on this.
Question: when you say you got access using all the applications but unable to get a work around the worldmax app do you mean that the live, movies and vod options don't work?
I decided to take the plunge and install AidansRom V8 based on Android TV 9 and it works well. I can just go and install whatever apps I'd like to. Only thing is that the remote that comes with the box doesn't work anymore but I've heard that a Bluetooth Airmouse would work splendidly so have ordered one. For the time being, I'm using a wireless keyboard and mouse and it works well.

Can you assist by providing a step by step guide on how to install AidansRom V8 on this worldmax box? I could make use on my box as an Android box.
Thanks

Follow the instructions here:
Aidans Rom
Pro tip:
When you plug the USB A to USB A cable, plug it in the port closest to the back of the device.

Would you able to share the process as I was trying to root by this process but the link for download wasn't available and some are discussing about unplug the device wait for few seconds and then go to boot mode.?
Can you please enlighten bit more.
Much Appreciated

Hi rondo257, totally agree with your point. Unfortunately I didn't have much luck with being able to access the Worldmax apps (live, movies, vod etc) but was able to get the device working for use as an android box by rooting and then using a firewall to block it from talking back to the mothership.
My suggestion to you is actually to use one of the Aidan custom roms as opposed to going down the route I did. Why? It's much simpler to install the rom and this will convert your box into a usable android box. Please note, this process is irreversible - so step forward with caution.

I'm not sure where else you may be able to find the file sorry - I no longer have it.
I managed to root my box by using a 32GB SD Card (64GB didn't work) and copying only the ezroot.zip file onto it. You can then go to the update screen under Worldmax box settings and do a local upgrade via SD card. I had to delete the two other files as otherwise the local update method would result in freezing on the boot screen.
Thank you for response.
Do you come across with alternative way to root the box ?
I have tried to find but at the end everyone is navigating to Finless post.
Anyone can help me to root the Worldmax tv to copy all root directory file and built in apps to create other rom and use worldmax tv features.
I tried to install many of that apps on other box but they didn't installed. Because I think some of the worldmax services were missing.

Hi Shakti, were you able to put aidan's ROM on it? Can you please send me step by step instruction on how to do it? I am also a victim of this scam and had tried to even report them to ACCC but they were not able to find them. They run their business via international channels and only has agents here who sell it directly to locals.

Hi Joy_Rod21, I didn't actually install the aidan ROM myself - this is one possible solution though if you're prepared to just give up on Worldmax and want to use the device as a generic Android Box.

Just in case you are interested in your remote to work I found a video which might help
I will try to install my box with Aidans Rom later this week.
I have loaded T5 pro image onto the box and its working good. Luckily I had saved a generic Android remote from old MX box and it's working like magic. However the processor is weak and takes time to work. Loaded Kodi and Stb emulator on it. At least it is not buffering.

I've got this issue where incoming calls and texts are not matching to the contacts database when the international format is used (so incoming 01202 123456 matches if the number is stored in the phone book as 01202 123456 but not if it's +441202 123456)
Seems it's quite common with ROMs / Phones from China.
My phone is a Cube 5H A5300 (a remarkably good bit of kit for the money if I could fix this dam issue) , Android 4.2.1, and MIUI 3.11.15. I don't think this is a MIUI issue hence posting here.
I've been through the suggestions that seemed to offer the best chance of a fix :-
Changing the MIN_MATCH in framework.jar and MMS.apk, and checking that strict comparison if odd from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2268120
Adding ro.phone.min_match=7 to build.prop from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160343
Various other suggestions relating to stuff in settings.
So I'm at a lost to know where to go next.
Anyone got any suggestions about where number matching is handled in Android? Where can I look for places to check ?
John
Exactly the same problem, also UK
Incoming calls show up in the format 07785 nnnnnn but my phone book has the numbers stored in +44 7785 nnnnnn format, with the result incoming calls only show the number and not the detail in my contacts/people.
I also tried ro.phone.min_match= using 9 and 7 as variables but it made no difference
I have the THL W8s running Android 4.2.1
Brilliant phone but his bug is killing it for me.
Really look forward to a solution
I found the solution for bog standard Android devices, I have a THL W8s running 4.2.1 but it should work on Androids 4.1.x / 4.2.x / 4.3.x according to the threads below.
No credit to me, all down to the guys on XDA, but as a bit of novice it took me ages to trawl all the posts on this subject before finally finding the solution that worked - and easily. It will also avoid you installing lots of apps of playstore that for me anyway either didn't work or gave a poor hack of a work around. In addition, this solution provides a whole host of other fixes and enhancement, brilliant piece of work from the two developers.
Start by removing all your contacts, either export/delete from People to re-import or as in my case delete the corporate email/contacts account
Tip: Reboot after almost every step
1) Your device must be rooted
2) You must be able to install apps direct from your phone: System Settings / Security / Unknown Sources (Unknown Sources may be in a different place)
Then the heart of it:
Install the Xposed Framework
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401
Full instructions in the thread
Then install GravityBox it's not the a ROM, just the Xposed Framework Module
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2316070
Again, full instructions in the thread (Make sure you have a tick next to Gravity Box in the Xposed Framework and reboot)
Then: GravityBox -> General Fixes -> Fix Caller ID
Reboot, re-add or re-import your email/contacts, either add the account or import from contacts and there you go, fixed.
Here's one that didn't work for me but may be worth a try if your version of Android isn't supported with the above solution:
Search on: ro.phone.min_match= where you put a 9, 8, 7 etc after the =
I used ES File Explorer to mount /system R/W and edit the build.prop file, but as I said, after ages of hacking around to get the fix in it didn't work for me.
BTW: I bought the THL W8s after busting my HTC One and not wanting to shell out too much to replace it. All-in-all I'm very impressed with my cheap Chinese Android phone (£155 on eBay), and now that this bug is fixed I'm really chuffed with it. The dual sim/dual standby function saves me carrying two phones, another bonus.

Thx for posting this, but didn't work for me. Hope it works for others as this is a great bunch of apps.
I'm wondering if my issue is related to the phone (Cube 5H which is a MTK6589 product) or the MIUI ROMs. I'm getting to the point where I think I might need to give up and get a different phone, but I feel the same way about this phone as you do aout the THL - if I could fix this issue it would be a great value for money phone

I'm surprised because the Garvity Box solution was designed around the MT6589 products (I think I read somewhere), my phone is MT6589T.
I did read somewhere that the solution wouldn't work on highly customized ROMs and I think that included MUI. Did the phone come with MUI factory installed, if there is a standard AOSP build for your phone it is probably worth a try using that.
Pity, I nearly threw a party when it worked for me, I'd been hacking around for days.
The phone doesn't come with a full MIUI ROM, just the "themes" part of it. But I really wanted to give MIUI a shot hence me putting the whole ROM on. Good point though - I've been toying with putting the original build back on to see if it fixes the issue. Then I'll know if it's a phone thing or a MIUI thing.
Glas you got yours going though. I crossing my fingers for that party moment!

Strangely - just noticed that numbers in "recent" are now being listed with the correct name matched to the phone book. If I turn off Gravity Box this stops happening, so Gravity Box is having some affect. Just a shame it's not on incoming calls.

Can anyone identify this Android Head Unit? I am trying to find out if I can install 5.1.1 on it. It currently has has 4.4.4. The model number is AC8317. Kernal version: 3.4.35 [email protected] #51 Thu Apr 28 10:41:26 CST 2016. I am not to familiar with android because I always had apple devices but I got tired of them. I am trying to learn how to customize these. The home screen widget cannot be moved or deleted. It is stuck in KPH and 24h time and wont change even thought I changed the setting under car settings. It has 1gb of ddr3 and a 1.6ghz quad core A9 processor and 16gb Nand, not sd card slot.
ebay item number is 272278514841, Sorry I cannot post links.
https://m.alibaba.com/product/60330991765/Car-gps-navigation-mediatek-AC8317-1024x600.html
According to this site, the head unit can only run 4.4.4. Sorry, out of luck there :/
Are you sure that means I cannot upgrade? I saw posts about updating carjoying radios to 5.1.1. They had MTCB and MTCD model numbers. I do not know how you know if you can upgrade or not? Do you know how to edit the homescreen widget? Do you know where I could find the stock rom?

I am certain that if you keep your device under the stock rom and kernel, your device will not update.
In other words, unless you root (same as Apple devices' jailbreak utility) you may not edit your device.

I am merely using common sense. On that page listed above, the maximum OS is 4.4.4, which means that your device does not SUPPORT that which is beyond such a level. It either does not support it because of hardware or software restrictions, or your specific device was left out of an update.
Another thing. No, I do not know how to move your widgets on your device. However, you can try a tap-and-drag method (put your finger on the widget, hold it there for half a second, and slide it. If you wish to remove the widget, a "Remove" box should appear on screen. Drag the widget to the box and let it go to remove) but I don't know if that will work, since I have a phone, and you have a head unit in a car.
Perhaps your car may restrict the use of the unit while moving. If so, do not move your car and try using the unit. If that doesn't work, try using it when your car is in park.
Again, thank you for your time,

You can not remove the homescreen widget, because it is integrated with its Launcher. You may try another launcher then use Quick Short Maker (or another similar app) to link oem Activities (FM radio, Music Player etc)
com.ts.launcher (TengShi Launcher no available information on Web yet.)
Hello all, I have a Zaap TV HD509 Android Box that was purchased a few years ago. Unfortunately this company was a scam and basically now forces you to pay a subscription fee, otherwise you can’t reallt use the box. When I turn the box on, I’m not able to see an “apps” area. The only way for me to see what apps I still have on the USB stick/SD card in the box is by going into the settings but I can’t launch the apps from the settings. Because of this I can only launch the 4 apps that have custom buttons on the remote control, such as YouTube and plex.
Anyways, I have used my brain for hours to think of a way for me to get Kodi to launch since I know it is installed because I can see it in the settings, but I came to the conclusion they purposely set it up this way so that I would cave in and pay their $150 yearly subscription . I know there are other ways for me to use Kodi but for reasons that aren’t relevant to this question, I specially want it on this android box. So I did some more googling and I come across a post on these forms, specially a reply by the OP to a comment left on his thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2257331&page=26
I’m not sure if the OP was telling him that he can do that to make the ZappTV work, and if he was, I’m not very skilled and I have no idea how I would go about any of this. I just want to flash firmware onto that zapptv android box so that I can actually use the box, without The company blocking my box. Thank you s o much in advance if anyone is able to help me out
I have the same here, I would suggest you pay 1 month to watch subscription, then you can access the box.
install custom app store from the web browser.
install new launcher special for TVs from your choice, and make it your default launcher. then you can start your box every time even when the subscription is expired.
install perfect player for IPTv, and make another subscription with other providers from your choice.
Hello, I have bought TV Box from China,
Model Vontar X3 Amlogic S905SX3 4GB/64GB Android 9.0.
I have a few problems with this TV Box:
1. I cant install any apps from Google Play Store. I dont know why...
2. There is problem with overheating.
3. Software installed in tv box comes from 2018 year. There is newer version on local disc. Should I update to new version?
I hope that someone help me
Regards
Hi, you may need to update google play services and the play store, you can find the apks on apk mirror,
What are your overheating symptoms and temps?
Where did you obtain this updated firmware, issue being sometimes these devices are clones and dont work properly so there is always a small risk when installing a firmware, I would reccomend using a usb A male to male cable & usb burning tool and read about Mask Rom Mode as this makes these devices recoverable from a bad firmware or flash, means you can try custom roms for S905X3 too, often the aweful factory firmware is aweful, I have my own android 6 s905x box running the official Android 9 Mi Box Firmware (with my modifications) and it makes these devices very usable, performs like a proper mi box, no lags ect, point is firmware can make a world of a diffrence

As my threads, topics etc here are unreachable for the moment (due to the forum changes) please go here to see about the playstore problem (Note2 of 1st page): https://forum.freaktab.com/forum/tv...-transpeed-x3-air-bqeel-y8-max-amlogic-s905x3
For the overheating just place your box above a USB fan base. That is what I use for all my TVboxes and I get a temperature 10-15 degrees Celcius lower, which is more than enough. You can make it by yourself or buy a ready made.
Installing also a custom rom will give you "another" box (meaning with more capabilities).
Have a look at my custom rom, especially if you need a preinstalled Magisk and TWRP.

Hello, I ve found solution for overheating problem: Its Vontar C1 cooler. I get a temperature 20-25 degrees lower. It should be enough.
How to update google play services and play store in Vontar X3?
I can make update here: Settings -> System Update. I have XR1.180610.011_release_keys(20200822_0033). X - I dont know what sign is before R.
And there is another problem: some channels in smart TV are in 16:9 forrmat. In Vontar the same channels are in 4:3 format.
And frame is cut on the left and right. So for example, number 123 - I see only 23. Just like XR1.

Probably you didn't read my note 2.
Install the latest app of Playstore from apkpure https://m.apkpure.com/google-play-store/com.android.vending
Reboot and try again.
Also try in addition this : Playstore-Settings-version number and click upon the version number 7-8 times. You will become a developer and probably get even newer updates.
You may have to reboot again and click once more upon the version number!!!!
As far as your mother I have ginen one to my mother (she is 87 years old !!). Having Launcher Square Home she is happy/and easy to use !!!

First of all look at Settings-Device Preferences-Screen and look/change what it is in "Screen Resolution" "Screen Position" (you can make smaller/larger the image shown).
Also you may have to alter something in your TV preferences.

Hello, I think that you must update your play store, it happens a lot when Chinese dud taps a standard google android system. It's outdated and reconfigured for first use. Chinese craps. One thing you need to do is update play store as a .apk . Download it on your PC and put in SD CARD or direct with USB cable and transfer and install in device. Restart system and you should have a updated play store and no limitations.
I know this is a month old topic but maybe it will help others.
Hi, I didn't see this guide anywhere so I thought I'd make one, this is my first so please reach out if you have any questions or need help.
1. Root with magisk.
2. Install busybox and props config module
3. Download a terminal emulator such as termux
4. Open emulator, type su press enter
5.type props.
6. Goto device finger prints
7. Pick a certified fingerprint
8. Find Nvidia and select it.
9. Find shield tv pro 2019 and select it
10. Reboot device when asked.
11. Open magisk and hide Pokemon go, you may need to enable this feature in settings.
12. Reboot device.
13. Hide magisk in settings.
14. Reboot.
15. Download safety net checker and make sure u pass.....magisk checker does not work properly.
16. Download ADB on your PC and run it.
17. Attempt to connect, once failed u will find a folder in documents called .android
18. Open that folder to find your adb keys.
19. Take adbkey.pub, open in notepad, copy and make a new text doc and paste it in, delete the .txt at the end and rename to adb_keys
20. Download a Root Explorer from play store
21. Copy adb_keys to root/data/misc/adb change the permissions to 770
22. Enable ADB over wifi.
23. Connect to your device, ADB should say success!
24. Follow this guide, you're device setup 2.

Enjoy some pokemon go! I used the GPS spoofer in the thread and it has worked since the original Android launch on Switch.
I have to shout out to the devs, this was an amazing release, waaaaay better and more stable than the original. I have had it running for weeks now, no issues. Stadia and steam link are awesome.
This also gets stadia to work, I noticed that if a joy con isn't responding, just remove it from switch, click a button then reconnect it to the switch.
Troubleshooting tips:
1. If ADB doesn't connect, recheck the permissions, I found root Explorer doesn't work 100% of the time when changing permissions.
2. If smali patcher doesn't work, and ADB is connected. Close smali patcher and reopen as administrator.
3. Flash the smali module via twrp. I couldn't get it loaded through majisk. After its flashed, make sure it's active in majisk modules.
Or simply install PGSharp and you won't have to do any of this.

Yes you could but that runs with risk of being banned my method has a zero risk of being banned unless you're an idiot and show up in Canada one day and Europe an hour later.
FYI Banhammer is on the way for pgsharp, they do it once a year around oct

Yes and no. While PGSharp can get you banned, it will only if you do are, as you well said, an idiot. If you respect the cooldowns and are smart using it, you can play forever on PGS.
If you play every day in a different country and have 100+ 100IV mons from different countries, of course you will feel the hammer. Play smart and you will be perfectly good.

Hmmmm, I'd rather play it safe and use this method as it's undetectable, the other method is detectable l, and there are lots of reports I find online about bans this you won't find any I would also prefer a method that works forever and not dependant on updates to be released.
I'm glad pgsharp works for you, but this is a far superior and safer way.
This also has the added bonus of enabling stadia amongst other features

Actually, both methods are equally unsafe. As long as the mask is not turned off by mistake (from the app and/or the user), PoGO won't recognize the root.
On Sharp, as long as you don't abuse, you'll be ok. Those who were banned are jumping from one country to another all the time, even ignoring the black wanings. And, if you do it too with this method, even if you don't use Sharp, you will be banned as well.
The lesson here is be smart when spoofing.

That's good to know but based on the data this is still a safer bet as there's been no band hammer, ever, with PG sharp the last one was in August 2020
PGSharp vs Smali Patcher & Pokemod (March 23, 2022)
No Root PGSharp vs Rooted Methods Comparison (March 2022) https://www.reddit.com/r/PoGoAndroidSpoofing For discussion of this, see Which one is better: PGSharp (no root modified app) vs. Smali Patcher with joystick app and Pokemod (rooted device required)? This is a Reddit post for this top...

I'm with johneyap, long time smali patch user and have never had problems when sticking to cool down timer. This is what the Reddit pogo spoofing community recommends hands down.
I installed android on the switch yesterday so I could try Xbox game pass and it's worked great. I remember installing lineageOS when it first came out for the switch and it was painful having seperate SD cards, but with hakete and switchroot it's gold.
I saw this post and thought do I need another device that's smali patched? I have a device with SD845 and it runs unreal so I won't struggle with lag and low/stuttering frame rates.
But great effort for the in-depth guide.
I tried with PGSharp but all it does is give me a black screen after the Niantic logo. Any idea anyone?
EDIT: Fixed it by using the ARMv7 version.
