Hiya, when i play a game, PowerAmp and other music apps gets killed, here's the error message PowerAmp gives.

Please disable such optimization for Poweramp and Poweramp full version

This never happened before though, all i have changed since is, changed the launcher and the new launcher uses even less RAM :/

You always can use a certain amount of internal storage memory as SWAP memory ( read: virtual memory ). More info here:

IMO phone's Android must be rooted to set up a SWAP file. Reason is the SWAP file must get added to Android's system file named /fstab in order to get mounted when Android boots up. And operating on Android's system files requires root.

Yeah, it's a shortage of RAM. The Amazon tablets are great values but with only 2GB of RAM, it often kicks background processes out of memory.

1GB RAM on mine
although before upgrading to new launcher, it never did this before, and i found out the new launcher uses less RAM than the old one :/

I have a " samsung galaxy player 4 ". I was wounder how much memory ( RAM ) it has ?

The OS e.g. Android and Touchwiz use up about 100mb RAM for itself leaving only 300-400mb for the user. My HTC Desire S has 768mb but really i can only use 623mb hope this helps.

Is there a way to install a mod to free up some of the RAM the OS uses? Or a lighter android that doesn't use quite as much?

I would recommend a 3rd party launcher like ADW Launcher on Android market very light weight, also a app like memory booster which frees RAM. Their are no such mods to change the file system usage as changing the amount of RAM the system needs could result in a unstable device. I have a Galaxy wifi 5.0 with 512mb RAM and the 200mb left is enough for me without lag etc. hope this helps
I recommend using Advanced Task Killer. It has a very easy interface, and frees up ram quickly.
What does it say for ram on the player.... I have seen 377... and 345.
I have 345 and Im pretty pissed about it.
I have 342mb of RAM available. But I heard that around 100+ mb are dedicated to the gpu on the galaxy s phone, and the galaxy player has the same hardware so should be the same. So I think it still has 512mb of ram, but just 342 is usable by Android.
Have a look at the output of dmesg (e.g. run the following in a terminal and copy the resultant file to your PC to view: dmesg > dmesg_output.txt) and it tells you how much memory you have and how much has been set aside. Note you will probably want to reboot before you do this as otherwise the interesting messages have scrolled out of the kernel message buffer.
I've been using an app called Fast Reboot Pro. It appears to simply close processes that are running in the background. It then shows you how much memory was was freed. I hit every so often and especially when things appear to lag. Seem to work pretty well.

Gingerbread/Samsung has it's own task manager which in turn has it's own widget which does this. No need to install an app for this
I to use fast reboot, find it much more effective than what the player comes with. I also use ram manager pro witch is a very good tool to set different ram profiles, I like "balance (more free memory)" the best. I first select my profile, then I run fast reboot, very effective! The more you run fast reboot, the more memory it frees up, witch is great for big games like asphalt 6. Also, I use zeam launcher, very lightweight, perhaps the lightest, but still a great improvement over touchwiz. Another thing, NO LIVE WALLPAPERS is an absolute necessary! These things eat WAY more ram than they say on taskmanager. THEY CAN EAT 50+ MB OF RAM!! Also, services like widgetlockscreen and such will eat your ram. If you want to play a heavy game, go to running services and kill as many as you can, you can also clear cached apps by hitting the menu button in running services. Hope these tips help you to make the most of our small supply of ram!
Hmm, after more testing, it would appear that wifi burns around 25mb of ram when on! So, if your really short on ram, just turn on airplane mode to kill all antennas. I just played modern combat 3 with 25mb free ram throughout the whole level I had 190mb free originally, that game sure eats the stuff :s The CPU rides at 1000mhz through the whole game, lol, could always use some more of that stuff! That's what oc is for

I searched in other forums and found out, the "hidden" part of the RAM is reserved for the gpu. My question now: is there a way to reallocate the RAM and get some of the reserved available for user apps? Because i constantly get freezes wit oom.

i am running on cyanogenmod 7.2 , but if i use launchers like spb shell 3d , my free ram, even at reboot, max caps at 110 mb. thats nothing.

i think is possible but it will be worst! most of the phone speed is given by the gpu (example samsung galaxy ace has 800MHz but lower gpu alocated memory and the phone speed is a disaster)
I think the only way to 'gain' some extra RAM is enabling SWAP.
On my old samsung, I once had a swap partition of 256 to extend the memory.
The good: you have real extra ram
The bad :
-swapping is slowing down the phone, as the sd-card speed is never sufficient.
-SD-card will die sooner, as you read/write a lot to same partition.
So swapping is not advised to my opinion, and others.
Some way to make some memory free (and speed up your phone) :
Use a clean rom (like 4pda.ru) and with the "autostarts" tool, try to disable android apps that automatically try to start itself at boot, startup or other events.
I found out that a lot of android apps try to start themselves even when you plug in the power cable (google maps for example), or connectivity changed, application installed etc.
With the autostarts tool (or rom toolbox) you can influence these triggers to prevent apps to startup themselves in the background.

You actually have more free, but the android has a lot of it saved for caching, etc. For example, Facebook takes 40 mb, but when I open it only like 5 or 10 mb of the ram shown as "available" is taken away because parts of it are actually open already.
But yes, if you root it, and a developer adjusts the Minfree to a large amount you will have more free but your phone will probably be slower.
Folks need to keep in mind, that keeping RAM free as you would with a Windows based OS, is NOT ideal in Android. Android uses RAM completely differently and it is perfectly okay for your phone to make use of RAM, even for apps you are not currently using.
There's a fair amount of documentation out there about this - do some Google-fu to deep dive further.
Actually I ask because when I was trying to send a picture in whatsapp it kept sayin "try again" but when I closed all tasks in multitask the picture did send. So I'm guessing it is a ram problem.
Also take it easy on Mr. This is my first android phone, I've been using iphone since the 3g and don't know nothing about android..... yet

You don't really want to much free ram. If there is to much free ram it means apps are not going in to cache witch will mean really slow app loading times. 200-300mb free is ample for new apps to run, if the OS needs more then its auto memory management will come in to play to free up more if needed, android is a very smart peace of kit

if anyone were to choose pre-caching order for faster load times ( usually just by seconds than non-pre-cached) to no random force closes because there is more free memory, they would chose more free memory.
but since the experts have already said android memory doesn't work the same way like windows does, then the best would be a balance between cache and free memory. right? right. that's where official updates and dev fixes come in.
I use my Z Ultra mostly for playing games, especially Summoners War. And because I'm a guild leader, I use LINE to coordinate attacks with my guildmates so I switch between the game and LINE in certain occasions. The moment I updated to Lollipop, I noticed that I can't do that totally anymore. Once I press home to minimize my game, write a message in LINE then get back to the game, it's already gone and it restarts. It also happens in Kitkat but not only when I have too many background processes running (Email app, Facebook, Messenger, etc.).
I heard there's some memory leak issue with Android 5.0, is that the case here? Is there a way to prevent my game from closing?
If you are using the stock ROM it isn't about the memory leak because Sony has fixed it, it is about Sony services and apps are very resource hungry and they are eating the RAM. You can disable some apps or services (be careful!) which you don't use and thus save some memory. There is a guide in Themes & Apps section with apps that can be disabled, you can follow it to free some RAM.

... which ones and how much? Because i see here >800 MB reported as free. I suspect neither the game and the messaging software do not use that much.

I don't know exactly which apps and how much RAM they use because I don't use stock anymore but facebook and messenger combined can use about 300 MB, not mentioning the game. That 800 MB (although I don't believe it, hard to achieve even on AOSP) is "free" only by its name. More than half of it consists of cached apps which can be closed to free more memory, but it is still being used. You can see it when you go into settings > apps > running and switch the view. And about the memory leak, it is somewhere in Cross-dev section, a thread by Iagucool I think, he had compared some smali files and Sony apparently had fixed the leak in their firmware.

Erm sorry but no, cached memory is used memory but it can be freed when system is running out of the really free one, so it has an ability to be freed whenever system wants to, thus labeled as "free".

i checked, when i normally play [without virtual] my free ram is :700+- [not accurately]
but when i play in virtual space,*my free ram is :500+- [not accurately]
i edited*LOW MEMORY KILLER*- VISIBLE APP to 0 mb, so that virtual doesnt crash... but yet, it crashes...*
i checked many popular & unpopular virtual... some crashes at loading point | some crashes at gaming period

App's name is errleading, IMHO. Virtual Space (VS) is simply an app cloner what puts a copy of apps / games into an isolated / separated space in your device's storage memory. VS is a hacking tool.
VS can be considered as an Android emulator where you can launch apps from. VS itself eats some MBs of device's RAM ( as you noticed ~200MB ) because it's merely an app like any other Android app. COD eats ~1.5GB RAM. Thus running COD via VS takes at minimum ~1.7GB RAM.
My suggestion: Completely clear phone's recent list to ensure no apps are running in background.
BTW: Android OS ( depends on version ) takes ~500MB RAM.

normally, when i m in home & not running anything i have 1300+- mb free...
btw another thing, i saw a thing... when the match started & i m just standing...not moving at all... then games run...
but when i move... within 5-6 second, game crash...
so, i thing this is codm protection, right?
