After seeing the Flyer and knowing styli are not in vogue right now I got to thinking.I was wondering if it will be possible to create a Bluetooth battery powered pen that will output pressure information(which isn't supported by capacitive displays) to the OS.Will something like this require a serious rewrite of the API(meaning, forget I asked) or will it be possible to write a program that could just output to it?
I've never touched Android code, and frankly quite a noob in the code business in general and thinking aloud.I'll be happy for a serious, detailed answer.
If you're just gonna write "NO",please ignore the thread.
Uh? Didn't get you
Explain little bit more
EDIT: I've now saved up $400 for the person who can help me get this running. PM me if you're interested.
I'm finishing up my bachelors degree in electrical engineering. My senior design project is to build a ionizing radiation detector from solid-state parts. The hardware is coming along well. What we would love to do is write an Android app to track/record/manipulate the data output by the sensor (via USB port preferably). Long term, I'm thinking the circuitry is embedded a phone case (like PowerSkins, except circuitry instead of a battery) and you plop your phone in, plug in the USB connector, and boom, you have personal and mobile dosimetry at a FRACTION of the cost of what is currently available (see Siemens Dosimeters-$1,000+ and then proprietary software costs). My project partner and I are crap at java programming *read-ALL programming*.
If anyone is interested in taking on something like this or knows someone who might be PLEASE PM ME. The deadline is coming up (mid-Feb), and while the software would be considered beyond the scope/requirements of the project it would really make it great.
Anything helps, even if someone wants to give as a shell of the code we could start with that would be greatly appreciated!
I should be starting another part-time job this month and would be happy to make a donation to anyone willing to help out.
Thanks.
Mark.

That's quite an interesting design project you've got there.
My programming skills are quite lacking as well, so I unfortunately cannot help you directly.
Just one comment though; if you're going to be interfacing with an Android phone with an external accessory, I think you may need something like this: http://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/ArduinoBoardADK to handle communications between the phone and your sensor. Another option would be to use bluetooth as an interface.
Good luck with your project!

Thanks for the input. Ya, we're going to need something like that for sure. We're acctually planning on sending accociated energies with each event (in eV).
Ok I have a question... Forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong area. Here is the pitch: I have been looking forward to this phone for a long time (as most of you) I have been interested for a few years in developing an on the go platform for mobile entertainment. What I mean is just something I can use in my car to listen to music or watch movies. I know there are many things that exist that allow me to do this but I'm looking to develop a more all in one truly mobile solution and the Note might be the best option.
Without boring everyone with too much details- I'm hoping the Note comes with NFC for starters but does anyone know- will the usb host adapter allow the Note to charge and possibly use an external hard drive at the same time?
I'm in the R&D stages now for a car dock with software that will allow Note to just slide in and go similar to the newer mobile infotainment systems that are starting to show up in cars now but this will be truly mobile.

Omgosh what a great idea! Hooking up an externel hard drive may work, because you can plug flash drives into tablets and they work just fine. Hope your plan works, because if iit does ill be installing it on my stang
You posted this in an unrelated thread, so I moved it to its own thread. Your plan sounds great, I hope you can make it happen, I'd like a nice car dock for my future Note
Thanks for your interest guys! I will post some more info as the design begins testing.
As of now I'm using my Captivate for a front end... it kinda works but there's a lot of manual interaction which I'm hoping with the Note I can move away from. If this works out I can move to actually producing a full mobile infotainment solution.
I'm curious though... This project started out with just a personal want to make my long drives a little more comfortable. It has now turned in to something that I actually depend on and almost need. Do you guys think there is an actual need for something like this? Maybe this could be a start for a whole new "something" platform.

Personal need and an idea of how to fulfill it is how many great products come around. I really wish I had a decent dock for my Captivate (that's what I've got, too), but none exist - and I have looked. Go for it. See where it takes you. Might make you some nice coin, and make others happy in the process!

You heard it here first... Should have some renderings soon-ish. I'm a software designer that works mostly in MS technologies so this is a new avenue but with all the support on XDA it shouldn't be too hard.
I would be very interested in this as well.
Good luck on the R&D

Based on how the Galaxy Tab works the answer is no, you can't use the USB drive and charge at the same time. You will need to build a custom cable.

I hope to have a Note to test with soon... (pre-ordered) The cable isn't too much of a problem just one more thing to put on the list. I'm toying around with designs that will able to have upgrades/plugins via a usb hub.

I could use something like that! I am a road warrior covering two states for my employer and have a lot of windshield time.
When it is time to beta test I would like to offer my services.

On the infuse hdmi (output and charge) works at the same time and needs it. Maybe if you need a few "lines" frim it to get it working ill supply that . It may need a custom kernel though...

Thanks! I'm hoping that I won't have to mess with the kernel too much... Most of what I need is already open in the OS (I hope) and I will most likely have the hardware completed before the software pieces. As long as my wife doesn't kill me first for spending too much time in the shop.
i think thats a great idea. check out how i am doing it now, using a 8.9 tab lte:

Hopefully your contribution could be applied here? may I suggest you to take a look at the mp3car.com forums? there's an android section there, very interesting.
http://www.mp3car.com/android-tablet/
What's most needed i feel are the development of physical buttons to control the tablet/phone while driving. I envision using something like a bt version of devices like carpc joycon ex (basically a small device that turns your steering wheel buttons into a usb keyboard), or using modified bt headset buttons.

Nice setup! That is exactly what I'm looking for. The physical buttons are something that also crossed my mind. I will check out the joycon. I think with the USB host it will be a lot easier now. I do frequent mp3car.com they have helped with a couple carpc's I have built for friends and my own XBMC in my WRX I still use to play games while sitting in my car. This is the first time I'm traveling down the android path and I think it's going to be a better experience all around.
Thanks.
Now I think the note would be way more appropriate for my other car - the 8.9 is more fitting to a truck really.
Keep us posted!

I'm gonna try using a Seagate goflex satellite hard drive as a media center for my note in my car. It's 500gb and produces a Wi-Fi signal that the phone hooks onto, you then use the Seagate app to access all the hard drives music and movies. I plan to hardwire the hard drive into my cars power along with a micro charger to plug into the Samsung note car dock. I'll let everyone know how the hard drive works out. It could be an option for your project too, although the hard drive is rather pricy.

Yeah, I have considered that, but I've seen less than stellar reviews on Amazon and I balked. Price is not a concern, as long as it works. The reviews stated that the interface was very poor and buggy. No playlists, no thumbnails, no folder support, IIRC.
Seagate, like Samsung, is not known for writing sleak software. So the fact that I must depend on their updates (will it work with ICS? Will it work in Landscape mode? etc.) is a concern. They should release their APIs at least, or source code.
I'd rather something like a NAS DLNA server. With DLNA, I can choose a bunch of compatible apps, I believe.
Also, about the Seagate's wifi connection, is is ad-hoc? Would it prevent the tablet from accessing the Internet? I suspect not, if you're using the note, but if you're using a tablet tethered to the phone...then this wouldn't work.
I have seen a couple lack luster reviews on the satellite but my friend is offering it to me for $75 because he never uses it anymore so I figured I would give it a shot. If it doesn't do what I need it to in the car I will either just use it for my tablet in home or sell it as Im sure I could recoup at least $75 from a $200 hard drive
Great, please report back your findings.

In this set-up, is the music coming out of the car's speakers or the Note?
Hi all .
I've gotten quite interested in those android dongels that you can buy to make your TV smart, but I was wondering if it's possible to make your own dongel?

You do know that these dongles are (a lot of the time) small computers with phone processors running on them? It's not as simple as putting some software onto a usb stick... After all, how would the TV become more smart just by adding a normal usb-stick?
With all due respect.. If I'm not mistaken, the original poster did not mention anything about a 'simple' USB stick or simplified schematic device. He simply inquired about whether or not it was possible to create/design a homemade version of these smart TV dongles. If I'm putting words into the mouth of the OP I apologize and if I am mistaken, disregard my post.
In regards to the thread starters inquiry - I am personally unaware of any existing methods, means or instructions pertaining to the assembly of these dongles.

It would be quite difficult. Is the OP interested in this for the economic benefits or just as a project to learn?
Because it is likely much cheaper to buy one of these devices as they are mass produced.
Building one yourself would be extremely difficult and would more than likely take the form of a box rather than a stick. There is a fair bit of engineering put into these sticks.

That's it. Actually, if the goal is use it to learn, it's better get a development board (as the allmighty Odroid-U2 )

It's just a project to learn but now I realize that it may be just too much effort to do it because I'll be buying a normal one anyhow.
When I buy one is it possible to flash another firmware on top of it if it's tweaked to work on a big screen?

This may look nonsense a bit , but can i turn my android phone into one of these dongles, like install an app or flashing a whole package to change the function of the smartphone and make it work on TVs. Since those dongles have a phone processor, why not use the phone processor .
Ok ,but if you have an old smartphone that's don't make easier build it? Can you use the motherboard?
You can use an old smart phone. I wouldn't use anything older than kitkat, anything older and the processor may not be fast enough. just use a media streaming app, for example Kodi. Connect your phone via mhl to hdmi cable, with power source, to you flat panel tv. Also check out these threads:

I bought a Plum Gator 3 phone roughly 3 years ago, because as a rugged phone, it was described as being more durable than other phones on the market (which I now know is true, and its why I love rugged tech). Unfortunately, because of Google Play being bloatware, and because of Google itself being known to do some pretty insidious things, I now want Android off of my phone. I've tried looking up tutorials on how to root it, but its as if most information about this phone has disappeared off of the face of the Earth. Any help?

Missed the [developers only] tag when you decided to post here? Welcome to XDA but please read up on some rules first. The thread will probably be closed soon but let me give you a quick reply nonetheless.
Replacing it with what? A Linux distribution like that doesn't even exist for your device? Mind that you have a Mediatek processor, which has the worst support already. Let alone a brand that no one heard of and 1GB of RAM that would bring you nothing but trouble if it were possible to install something else. If you want to avoid Android, I'm afraid your only options are iOS (as if Apple doesn't participate in insidious practices) or going back to a Nokia 3310 (yay, Snake!) or similar.
Another in my opinion better option, is going for a device à la OnePlus, Pixel or Poco that has an established development community and patch the heck out of it to block out anything related to Google. You will not achieve this on your current device, ever. Sorry to disappoint ya [emoji52]

I was informed by a private message from some guy named Matt that my post was moved to Android Q&A, Help and Troubleshooting. Also, my answer to your question about what I'd replace Android with would've been Ubuntu Touch. Not to sound like I have blind arrogance, but reading your response made me wonder if it's possible to replace the processor with one that has much better support, and replace the ram with one that has more gigs? I understand that every piece of hardware has to be compatible with each other, and sometimes you're lucky enough to find replacement parts that are. Other times, it ends up being a waste of time and money. If it is possible, I also understand it will be more of a pain in the ass than it needs to be just to replace the parts and then see if I'm lucky enough to even root it, but if it allows me to be one step closer to accomplishing my goal, then all I can do is be cautious when seeing what happens. However, if, in your expert opinion, it isn't possible, I'll just dump it and use the Alcatel Go Flip 3 I bought yesterday as a back up phone.
