Retrieve data from encrypted Samsung phone - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
So I recently broke my Galaxy A7 2018's screen... It is completely black and unresponsive. Since then the phone has turned off and whenever I turn it on it is encrypted as all Samsung phones do. My question is, how can I connect my phone to the pc so I can mirror it to unlock it since it is encrypted and it will not show up? Or, is there another way I can retrieve my data?
Thank you.

Ummm, encryption is not automatically enabled on internal memory or SD card storage by default on Samsung's.
Never encrypt data drives and when possible you a SD card as the data drive.
Your only hope is to replace the display or use ADB to retrieve the data. If that isn't already enabled in Developer options you're likely boned proper.
Note, any impact sufficient to damage the display may have also damaged the mobo.
A data retrieval service may be able to recover the data.

The phone is working normally. I know that cause when I press the volume slider, sound comes out. The thing with ADB is that it wont even recognize the phone so I cannot do anything, because it is encrypted.

It would if it was enabled.
Have you set it up and used ADB before on this device?
If not, it's too late now for that option.
Otherwise replacing the display is the best option unless the data was backed up to either Google or Samsung cloud.
Even if you replace the display there's no guarantee the data won't be lost.
Meh, always redundantly backup critical data to at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC.

[Q] How to copy the internal memory on a Samsung Galaxy S with a broken screen?

Need a little bit of help if anyone would be kind enough to do so.
My Samsung galaxy s screen is no longer working. But the phone turns on fine and i can hear people calling me, alarms going off, receiving mms etc. but i can't access any of the memory on the phone.
When i hook my phone up to the computer, my phone is set to ask which mode it goes into. So i haven't been able to access the files that way. Even though the memory cards show up on my pc, they just can't be accessed.
I've been told that if i return it to my carrier, they will delete all my files and reinstall the operating system before fixing it, as its policy. Is there any way for me to copy the files on the internal sd card to my computer?
I'm slight bit of a noob, so would need a little bit of a walk-through in how to do it, if its possible.

[Q] Totally braindead?

So let's start off saying I messed up bad. REALLY BAD. I'm not the one who is braindead, by the way. It's my vibrant.

I have an important recording in one of the folders in my internal data that I would be willing to go very far to restore. The recording would be impossible to reproduce, even under the same circumstances and people involved.
I've been able to boot up the phone (supposedly) because I hear the hardware battery charging sound. Only two of the indicator lights on the bottom light up. The touchscreen seems to be unresponsive, but I could be wrong because the sounds for the phone were disabled before the accident. "HEY MAN YOU SHOULD HAVE USED A CASE" - I did have a case on.
Anyway, when I connected it to the desktop (drivers already installed, done this dozens of times) it said unknown device. I tried other USB ports, still got nothing. I took it to the laptop, same issue. Tried to force install the drivers, that didn't work either. The battery is fully charged. I can restart the phone and the boot times combined with indicator lights at the bottom tell me the phone is "working"
I have Droid Explorer installed, the program I usually use to access the file system. It doesn't find any devices connected. Not sure about ADB. I read somewhere on the forums that you can get into recovery mode by pressing HOME+POWER+VOL UP. I'm not sure if the home button works but I tried this with no luck.
"HEY MAN WHY DON'T YOU BACKUP" - I do. On the first of every month. It hasn't been the first of November, therefore I don't have this backup.
Tell me my friends, is this phone to be euthanized? I would also preferably not want to buy a new screen. Any sort of help is appreciated.
Hey question, is the recording you want on the SD card or the internal memory of the phone, reason I ask is if its on the SD card, you can pull that out, mount it on your lappy or whatever and use the proper SW to explore the card, and retrieve your audio file you want, otherwise, if not then yes you still need a way to overcome the detection of phone to access the two drives for the internal memory of the phone, so you can retrieve your audio file. Yes drivers are the first thing that comes to my mind, however if the phone was being detected prior to damaging it then IDK why that would change unless there is a HW issue from the trauma of dropping it, was the phone detected prior to dropping it with 0 defects and since you damaged it that functionality is no longer working???? I mean your confident its fully booting up, and technically the phones functional except the screen is hosed, do I have this scenario right, and as such is the reason why you cant navigate to the folder you need in order to retrieve your file????
Look you also gotta find a way to see what your doing with the phone so you can get it into mass storage mode, then you'll be able to extract the audio and whatever files you want, BTW replacing the glass isn't that bad, unless your not confidant about doing fragile mechanical work on phones!! And replacing the capacitive glass face would restore the phone to an operable state where you could once again be interactive with it.
Of course if the recording was on the external SD card I wouldn't have a problem with it. It looks like the trauma messed up the hardware, but I can't be sure anymore. Of course If I fix the screen and connect to wifi I can recover it but a screen would cost me another $150 and I'm not sure if that's such a good idea. If only I knew someone else with the same phone, then I could borrow their screen temporarily!
I sort of know exactly everything that you're saying, it's just that there's no solution to the problem so I'll have to either get an expert to recover my files or buy a new screen. Looks like I will need quotes on this.
I have a phone with a cracked screen that still works. That screen with your mobo could be used to at least get a display and pull the files you need. PM me, and I'm sure we can work something out.

I literally had this same problem. I'll tell you what I did. You need to set up adb on your computer. There are plenty of instructional videos on that. Once you have adb setup for sure, then connect your usb and power the phone on. You should hear your phone recognize your device. Open up cmd on your pc and type in adb devices. You should see your phone listed. Now download a program called "Android commander" it's for windows. Android commander uses adb features to see, copy, erase, and basically manipulate all the media on your device without being able to see your screen or enable mass storage. I used this trick to pull pictures of my daughter being born off my vibrant before sending it back to Tmobile for my replacement. I also was able to delete su and any traces of being rooted or having custom roms on my device thus avoiding my warranty being voided. Hope this helps. If you need further help, feel free to add me on google talk. I'm happy to help. I know how I felt when this happened to me. [email protected]

[Q] Access phone memory? Screen broken - can not input security pattern

Ok... first, I have researched this exhaustively and can 100% say that this is a real problem and not someone trying to access data on a stolen phone.
A car ran over my phone (no not me) and surprisingly it still works! But I enabled a security pattern (I still know it) but since the screen is cracked I can't access one of the dots needed for the pattern. Is there anyway that I can hook this up via USB and access phone memory (contacts, pictures of kids, etc.) It does not look like the phone memory is backed up to the SD card but perhaps there is a way to remote force it to do so and then I can just retrieve the data from the SD card... Who ever can solve this can have the phone for free! It still works, receives, texts, etc.... (I know because I keep seeing text messages notifications appear)
From other research it looks like you can do a hard reset and force it to back up to the SD card but F***ing ATT disabled this feature on their OS...any way to get this feature back?
Thanks,
HTC Aria / HTC intruder
Android operating system
Pictures are stored on the SD card in the DCIM folder, so you shouldn't have an issue with that. If your contacts are saved to the SIM card or stored in the cloud via Google Contacts, you can access them from another phone/computer -- it's only an issue if the contacts are stored to internal memory.
Is your phone rooted? Do you have USB debugging enabled on the phone?

Thanks. No it isn't rooted. I'm most concerned about getting the contacts off of the internal memory. I wasn't always smart about making all new contacts "google" contacts. I'd love to see the text messages that I haven't sen yet as well as export all my text message threads to my new phone. I don't have USB debugging enabled as I believe that AT&T took this option away. Suggestions?

AT&T did not disable USB debugging. It's a setting found under Settings > Applications > Development. Unfortunately, it's not enabled by default. If it is enabled, then you can access the internal memory by connecting your phone to a computer via USB.
Outside of that, I'm not aware of any way to access the phone's contacts or text messages except replacing the digitizer on the phone.
You might be able to get the contacts off with HTC Sync, but it needs to be selected when the phone gets plugged in... Pretty sure it does that by default, but if you've changed the default to USB storage or something this might not work...
Worth a try I say

If you are talking about doing this via adb, the screen needs to be on and unlocked.

[Q] Recovering data from a Galaxy S3 with damaged screen?

Yesterday I dropped my Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 softly on the floor, but immediately I noticed that there was a problem with the screen: the glass was not broken, but colours were abnormally green, with a horizontal white line at the top of the screen, and a little circular dead zone in the upper left corner. I could still use it. But a few hours later, the light intensity of the screen had progressively and drastically decreased, and the phone could no longer be used. Today, the screen is totally black…
All data was saved on the external card, and I thought that Gmail synchronization would have saved my agenda. So initially, it did not seem like a too big problem, except for the cost of screen replacement, but when I realized that my calendar synchronization had not been not properly configured, the problem suddenly became more serious! My main problem is now data, not screen!
When the phone is on, and connected to my PC via an USB cable, I can only access two folders on the phone: “Card” and “Phone” (the external card is still in the phone). I have the original ROM, the phone is not rooted.
Do you think that my calendar data is there somewhere? I don’t know where to find it.
I’m afraid that all data will be lost if I send back my phone to the reseller's after sales service.
Alternatively, is there a mean, with an HDMI adapter and an external screen, to use the phone anyway: only the display does not work, the rest of the phone seems OK. The touch screen still worked fine yesterday, when I could still see something. Will I see anything on the TV when touching the phone screen? It would be wonderful if I could just reconfigure my synchronization, in spite of that black screen, and thus recover my agenda data via my Gmail account, before sending the phone to the after sales service.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Search exact same question been asked before and i believe a workaround was found .

You can use ADB to make a backup of all your apps + data. However USB Debugging must be enabled for this to work. Is it enabled on your device?
If yes, there are a lot of guides on how to backup your phone`s content such as Apps + Data.
One such guide is this: http://www.thesuperusersguide.com/adb-backup--restore.html
No, I had not activated "ADB debugging" and without screen, it seems a little bit difficult to do it now, thus precluding "ADB" use. That's why I was wondering if there was a possibility to use the phone with an external screen via a MHL-HDMI adapter, assuming the touch screen still works… Any idea?
yes, just do that. you can also access adb from recovery without having to enable anything
I am now pretty sure that touch screen is OK. Even if I don't see anything, swiping the screen to unlock it produces the usual sound. So I won’t do anything until I get a MHL HDMI adapter. I think it is the simplest way, if that works… I keep you informed in a few days. Many thanks

[Q] Recover data from a dead screen device

Hello,
My friend's Z2 was faulty and the screen died while taking a picture underwater.
The device appears to still be running normally but the screen is completely dead, no display, no touch response.
The device has a swipe lock code set which is preventing her from accessing the data when the phone is plugged into a computer.
Sony is saying they can't fix it without clearing the data and local fix-it shops are saying they can't fix the screen.
Is there anything that can be done to remotely unlock it so we can access the data from a computer?
Cheers for the help! :fingers-crossed:

Hm, quite a conundrum.
Well it depends what you mean by "data"
If you mean the files on the internal drive and not contacts or any user data at all.. You should be able to flash a new ROM using fastboot mode. How to do that is here.
Important information to avoid formatting internal sd card: This process will delete the internal SD Card if WIPE (USER)DATA or any PARTITION option is chosen.
After doing that, when the device restarts you should be able to simply connect (or keep connected) the microUSB cable and it'll show up on your PC the files on the phone.
Provided of course you have all your drivers in order, if you don't... Well here's a few links: 1 2
