After looking at several posts in XDA and Reddit, it seems that the BLOD or BootLoop of Death is happening to devices everyday as we approach the 2 year mark of the N6P release. Seems like a hardware issue or maybe a combination of both. My question is that do you guys think that this issue is actually a large number of lemons or that there is really a design flaw. Will all 6Ps eventually BLOD? Is it a matter of If or When?
Also it seems that the batteries were indeed pretty bad, with 4 users that I know personally all experiencing the degradation.
Well, it's not all 6P's. I bought my 6P last January 18 months + and I still get 6.5 to 7 hours of screen on time. Using Accubattery my estimated capacity is still 88% 3,028mah. I can run my phone to 10% no reboots or shut downs. It's really in how you take care of your battery.
And before you ask, no I haven't changed my battery out. I've never opened my phone due to the fact I want to sell it soon and afraid they heat gun would warp things on the phone.

Curious if you've seen or heard anything that'd validate your fear... it's certainly reasonable to be cautious, and it does NOT look like an easy process by any means but why the heat gun? It's a very common tool to use for jobs like this.
But to be clear, I too worry the phone won't look/feel the same after a successful battery replacement.
Of course skill levels vary greatly.

I've seen or heard nothing, but since I'm upgrading to OP5 I was going to sell my 6P to help cover some costs. Looks like they are still selling for about 300-350. That's a nice chunk off the 540 of the OP5. My phone shows zero signs of wear and have never once dropped a phone. It looks like it came out of the box last night and plan to keep it that way for sale.

Gotcha. And thats a hell of a deal! I've been thinking of upgrading, OP5 is really tempting. If I got $350 for my 6p itd be like a 45% discount. Much better than the trade-ins carriers give you.
Edit-No it's like a 70% discount! $539 for 128 gb 8gb ram. For some reason I thought the base model came in at around $700

Really glad to see that you've preserved your battery well. I had to repair/replace my mobo and battery under warranty but I'm worried that the issues will happen again eventually due to poor manufacturing.

For those of you hit with this problem and who have been denied warranty or are having no joy with either Google or Huawei, I have found a solution, albeit not the best of solutions but one that will have at least have a 60% chance of bringing back to life your Nexus 6P.
So after running some solid tests over the last week and abit on a few Nexus devices hit with the BLOD, I have found the following:
* BLOD Issue is not a software related Issue, Well not in full only in part, 6.0.1 handles and reacts to the sudden voltage drop that happens with the shockingly bad battery in our phones, it reacts to the loss differently so something changed in the newer versions 7.X.X that must trigger the battery to do something different and then causes the phone to BLOD, though the 6.X.X train was not entirely immune from it, the phone would hold up longer.
* Through various tests both with electronic hardware and software on the phone, you can physically watch the battery health drop sharply on a daily basis, these batteries are really that bad.
* The OEM Battery is a POS, when it gets put under load the Voltage tanks and tanks sharply, when it is not under heavy load and running at <31deg/cel the phone will work but only if the following conditions are meet... (1) The motherboard has not been fried by the battery shorting it out, a small IC chip appears to get damanged by it from what we can tell when we did testing on about 4 phones, but not on every phone or (2) the battery health is well enough to keep powering the phone.
* Here is where the problem gets interesting, the more the battery gets put under load, the more it degrades and rapidly, my current Nexus 6P 128GB Frost White version which is getting replaced on Monday by Google is down to 36% battery health, meaning if it drops below 60% battery life the phone just shuts down, so to prevent it from going into bootloop I have to keep it above 60% and each day the battery health is dropping even more roughly a 1% very two to three days at the moment.
* So we decided to put in a Generic battery into one of the 64GB versions that is stuck on BLOD, and it was nothing more than a battery from HK some cheap no-name of eBay, and BOOM! The phone boots up and comes to life again...
* However I have noticed a pattern on three devices I tested this on over the last week, I think the original battery at some point ends up damaging the PCB (Motherboard) and from what we could observer this would be the norm, if your battery is spiking and doing all sorts of things it shouldn't be, it has the potential to fry other components. There isthree of us doing these tests with one being an electronics engineer and the other two of us just being tech heads who repairs phones as a hobby.
* Now if we put back in the OEM battery, guess what? The phone would not boot up, it would just BLOD and on the meters the battery would just spray out wild voltage and all over the joint, these are really crap and awefully bad batteries that Huawei have put in the Nexus 6P, In fact we are not sure why they dont blow up like the Note 7 phones did, given how erradic the voltage spikes are.
* I can safely say that the Huawei made Nexus 6P has a huge problem with the installed battery, which by extension is also causing electronics to fail if it gets caught in the BLOD for too long and overheats the phone. My advise, if your phone goes into BLOD then don't strain, stop using it stright away, dont stree the phone too much, get the battery replaced ASAP, find someone who knows how to open it and replae the battery inside of it with a $7-$16 battery that you can get of eBay, this will at least bring your phone back to life.
I have spent about $400 on testing this to get to the bottom of it, having to buy batteries, run multiple tests, and also buy broken Nexus 6P Phones, at least I can get some of it back by selling the phones that have been brought back to life I guess.
Good Luck peeps, and my advice is to stay away from any Huawei Phones, because if has happened to this phone which was supposed to be a flagship, then it can happen to other Huawei phones if they are using the same or similar batteries, unless they knew all along and have changed them.... Which now makes me wnt to buy other broken Huawei phones and see if they have changed them.

Yeah, fortunately I haven't had any issues with hardware on my phone. I'm curious if we'd ever see numbers hardware failure rate.
I've loved my 6P. I'm gonna miss the front facing speakers and QHD display. I may not notice the difference in 1440p to 1080p done I don't need with VR.
I share the same experience as Eric214, I have the phone since November 2015, my Accubattery show 93% 3191, I have all update installed thru OTA. Never rooted or installed custom ROM, here is my stat from Accubattery

I have literally never gotten that much sot on this phone, I feel like even if I didn't install any apps and left it in airplane mode I still wouldn't.
My new s7 edge gets me crazy battery life, but the 6p has been disappointing as far as battery life goes.
I think the bootloops and battery dissipation are caused by overheating of the 810, though that's just my professional opinion. Components don't like heat, especially when packed so closely together.
I had this battery issue after 14 months, replaced it 10 days ago - AccuBattery said my battery had something about 40%, now it says 101%. Everything back to normal.
Funny thing is: a month ago, AccuBattery showed 88% as well, everything working fine. Suddenly, 52% and the shutdowns began (no BLOD). I lived with this scenario for 15 days (battery health going down fast), almost bought an iPhone to replace it. Digging around I found a post from a Brazilian dude that brought its N6P back to life buying a battery from a given seller in a known online platform here and I decided to give it a try - battery and replacement costed 12% of what I paid on my phone. I expect to have it working until Pixel 2 pops up.
I'm in the group that after just 14 months my battery is at 67% of it original capacity and my SOT is around 2 hours. The worse battery performance of any phone I've ever owned. And I take care of my battery rarely will I let it drop below 60%, as I try to avoid deep discharges that harm battery longevity.
But no boot looping thus far.
as for the long post mentioning updates from MM to Nougat, i believe that the only thing i defintely did notice was with the battery behavior, the first weeks it took much longer to fully charge the battery , and it freaked me out.
now it is kind of normal again, i rooted my 6p the day i have got it haha.
i love flashing custom roms/kernels.
had the 6p for about 10 months now, i love it and really hope that it won't let me down quick.
at least another year would be nice, or 2.
So according to what @cyberedward mentioned from Google tracker replacing EOL battery with new Huawei made battery is like setting timer in a time bomb to another value ...
I don't know if they'll all bootloop but the battery is crap. After my experience that I documented in another thread, Id doubt anyone who's used the phone for a year has a battery thats holding anywhere close to full capacity.
Mine also shuts down at 20%. Now 4 days out of warranty. I'm gonna fight with the people at Huawei to get it replaced but best case scenario, I have to find a temporary phone for however long it takes to get it fixed.
3 year old phone?-I guess cut your loses.
But within a year?... complete BS! It's defective and they should recall them all.
***And to the OPs original question--what sucks is theres no known cause for the bootloop so you could get the battery fixed and within days, weeks, months you might also deal with that.

So I placed an order yesterday for a $900+ phone. I wanted it. The anticipated lack of supply elevated my desire. Frankly, I was stoked when I saw the Oct 17 ship date. I probably would have had it the same day, as I'm only 30 miles from the drop ship location.
But this morning, I looked at the order again. $914.79. $914.79. For a phone. And it doesn't even have Band 71 (I'm T-Mobile).
I recently found on eBay what was held out to be a true factory OEM battery. I had intended to keep my 6P as a backup after I got my shiny new Pixel XL 2. This morning, I looked up who Google uses to do their repairs. It was UBreakIFix. Went online, there were 3 stores withing 15 miles. Called them. $45 to replace the battery as long as I supplied the battery.
The tech was knowledgeable. As in he took one look at my battery, still in the anti-static, and could tell it was true factory OEM. Said he has replaced the battery on tons of 6Ps in the last three months. He said that they normally use factory OEM for 6P replacement, and the batteries aren't hard to get. I did not ask what they would charge for the battery (I paid less than $20 I think, eBay).
So I left it there. Used my Nexus 5 as a temp phone.....and dammit if the battery wasn't WAY better than the 6P.....but oh such a small screen.
The phone was done in about 30 minutes. I picked it up. My phone is good as new. I could immediately notice the difference.
I just cancelled my $914.79 phone. I'll wait for the XL 3 unless the phone dies before then. I have my Nexus 5 as a backup.
So, if you're like me, sitting on the fence on the XL 2, debating whether to replace the battery or get a new phone.....replace the battery.

I just checked and there are no more left.
Honestly, UBreakIFix was way more on the ball than I had ever anticipated. Your mileage may vary.

You know what, i just cancelled my order too. Seriously, $900+ for a phone. I realized how good the 6P has been even after two years. There is nothing new that i can do on a pixel 2 that i can't do on my 6P. Going to replace the battery and ride it out until the phone dies at some point. Thanks for the sanity check lol
Yeah a few months ago I contacted Google and they said they'd send a replacement 6p. After a month of nothing, I talked to them and they said it was on backorder so they'd just refund me my money. I thought "cool, I'll use my M8 and spend the money on a pixel XL 2". Then a day later my refurbished 6P showed up.
Battery life is pretty damn good again, especially on Oreo.
As much as I like the way the XL 2 looks, it's not that amazing to me to justify almost $1000.
I'm perfectly fine using this thing for another year.
Which ebay battery did you buy?
I may wind up doing the same thing. I got a quite from UBreakIFix with a new battery from them for $89.99 which I couldn't quite stomach.
Unfortunately right now its a shot in the dark with eBay batteries are there are no known good sources still available.
I may be tempted to try this one as a $45 ish repair is a lot better then $90.

Was thinking of getting Pixel XL 2 as well , but since my 6P performs flawlessly, I'll stick to it for the time being.
I love the xl2 myself but the 6p has always been my favorite device for a reason. The phone is still today one of the best phones you can buy so I'm with you guys. No way I'm spending that much on a phone.

It's really not lol and that's coming from a big fan of the phone.
When do they usually have sales on new devices? I may wait until they have a price drop or sale on the XL. My guess is after the new year we may see price cutting.

Doubt Google would actually lower the price until after the XL 3 is on sale. What they would do is throw in more and more valuable add-ons, like a full size Home, or, depending on sales of both, even a Home Max after a few months. Free VR Googles, anyone? And any combination thereof.
Third party vendors will likely have them for a cheaper price after a couple of months.
My 6P is still under warranty. I sent it in for dying at 15% and it went to a Huawei authorized service. Came back after a week, the report says they changed the battery, the pfc board (it's the board the charger plugs into) and main camera (which i had no issue with). It's been two weeks with it and the battery is just as bad as before - still dies at 15%, AccuBattery says 2233 mah capacity and I get about 2h screen time. I'm not sure what to do now.. Is it possible that a new original battery would be this bad? Should i just give up on it or send it in again under warranty? I was really hoping on riding it out another year at least..

What, the 6p you don't think is a worthy device even today? I do. I think it's a great device for what you pay for it compared to 900 dollar phones that it can easily keep up with.

It's not cause it's hit or miss. So many problems plague this phone and it comes with one of the most half assed processors ever. The op3 is a much better buy
I went to a local shop in Toronto, near Kennedy and Highway 7, and paid $50 cash (no tax) for the battery, and I had them replace the rear glass as well due to a scratch on it for an additional $20 cash (also no tax).
Finished in about 30 minutes, has a 30 day warranty and was done on Oct. 3rd. After 3 drain/charge cycles (apparently required for warranty to be valid... how they'd know I did it or not is not known.. did it anyway) my battery life has doubled.
Before fix, I'd get the early shut down at 50ish percent, but now I get a full battery charge to 0.
I'm pretty sure I have some knock off as the temp sensor remains a constant 30 degrees Celsius, even after I put it in the fridge for 3 minutes to test it out, but I'm not too worried. I don't use rapid chargers, so it's only ever charging with 2.4A.

Your current battery is bad at only 65%. Whether they changed it you will never know. Like many others here, I would order a battery from a known good source and pay a local repair shop to replace it. Then it should last a good long time.

Man congrats!! That's a good story indeed. I don't blame you for cancelling your order. I personally could not believe of all companies that Google would leave the headphone jack off the phone. Being a purist company I mean you gotta include the headphone jack. It's a nice phone but I can tell you from experience coming from the Samsung S8 which also had the 18.9 ratio that it was way too narrow. The proportion was way off to me so I sold my S8 and was able to locate a brand new Nexus 6p 64g that I ended up buying for only $150!! I got extremely lucky on my deal. I couldn't agree more with you as your 6p will easily last you another year if not longer and is every bit just as good as a phone as the pixel 2 and my Samsung S8.

Is this really impacting a big percentage of phones? I'm based in EU if the EU version is more or less impacted. Any other major issues I should be aware of before ordering? Oddly enough the Moto Z Play is more expensive so I can the have the regular Z and the battery mode for the same price as the play.

Modern battery will be soon or late degradate. Its normal. Dont think about it. I have bought moto couple of month and didnt see anything like that. Be honest, I am dissapointed in android phone with that price. Come from wp 640.

Yes, but on this phone it degradates really too early, well before ONE year of normal use, when all my previous phones had this issue after at least two years.
It works fine for about 7-9 months, then it degradates very fast.
Even worse is the fact that for some bug in SW, when it begins to degradate phone is unable to start (or restart) even with 25% or more battery level....
The battery in my phone has started to die without warning between 5-40% charge. End of the line? Options? Thanks.
My ok, it still reach 2 days (or 1 day with full use) you can try to replace just the battery youll need heat gun, suction cup , and set of mini screws, you can find alot of tutorials on you tube,
if it worth for you (battery cost about 30$ i think)

What water resistant? Mine after a brief exposure to rain had water in the headphone jack and for 2 days was vibrating like hell and messages with "headphone connected" / "headphone disconnected" .
The so called "water resistant" is a piece of crap and a big lie!
Also my battery is going to hell, but not like yours. It just go to 0% much faster than before. After two years of normal usage (with bootloader locked btw) i hardly get one day of battery. When it was new i was getting two days also.
I have had a long series of Sony Erricson phones, but the Z5c is the biggest failure until now. The previous phone (a Xperia SP) still works perfectly with battery still going for 3 or 4 days (normal usage and almost no gaming), and this after approximately 7 years of usage and hardcore gaming in the first 4 years of its life.
I was a big fan of Sony Ericsson phones (since the T28) and loved them since the P900, but now i`m seriously thinking to switch to Huawei phones. They are a lot better then Sony right now, in every way possible (yes, including cammera ).
I'm in the same situation: after 3,5 years the battery is slowly diying, sometimes the phone switches off at 10%.
When i use Maps, the battery goes down 1% for 1 minute. Apart from that, the phone still works fine and it's in good condition but Sony wants to charge me 75 euro for just replacing the battery! My 7 years old Galaxy S2 has had a much longer battery life compared to this Sony...
The problem is that i don't really trust third party batteries from ebay or chinese sites. Has anyone had a good long experience with batteries bought online?

Same problem: my battery was dying, could barely get it to do one full day (basically, only by not using the phone).
Replaced it myself with a Chinese one from Amazon at about 18€: so far everything's good. Can't vouch for battery long-term duration, of course, but in 15 days it has shown no visible degradation - and I have longer SoT than I used to have when the Z5C was new (to be fair, now I'm on LOS with kernel undervoltage optimizations, and not on stock OS).

My N6 is almost four years old. Running LineageOS 15.1 for now.
1. Screen-on time is awful. OK, if I have 120 minutes till it dead meat.
2. Less than 50% battery results in very likely self-switch off. Sometimes it can be rebooted, sometimes not. Power connection resolves the problem.
So I decided to change the battery. It took 2 hours. 20 minutes of the actual work and for about 100 minutes I looked for a proper T4-screwdriver I put somewhere.
New battery = same situation. Nothing changed. The battery I ordered from the USA and it wasn't cheapest on eBay. I ordered two batteries actually.
Resuming I see the problem, not in battery or not totally in the battery. Looks like the problem in the aging power distribution subsystem. Capacitors etc.
This phone may be cleverly designed to hold a very specific timespan. It's time to retire.
Thinking about OnePlus 6?

I recently bought a N6 in great condition because I was refunded my money for my Nexus 6P. The phone did need a battery replacement though. It throttled under 40% and had early shutdowns.
I changed the battery (Cameron Sino) and modded my frame and back while I was at it.
The phone does run smoother (although no matter what rom I try, it always slows down to an unusable pace after a week or two) and stopped throttling.
I however do not get anywhere close to the SOT some of you guys are getting.
The most I could get is probably 2h30m if I'm lucky. Mostly I get around 1h30m to 2h.
I really want to get this fixed because I plan to use my N6 until the new Pixels arrive (which is still a long time).
I do have my Moto 360 connected but this is not the problem. I ran a clean rom install without my watch connected and bluetooth disabled and did not get more battery life out of it.
Edit: I'm running Nitrogen OS at the moment.

I'm deep in concern Moto implemented the N6 radio module or the radio flash or vendor or any other proprietary in the way to interfere with a proper day to day work.
Artificial aging promotes us to buy new devices every 2-3 years. But from the performance point, our 32bit N6 is still adequate.
Would be happy to get it to my kid instead of buying another device for him. He already killed my old Note 2 and close to do the same with J7.

I had a similar problem on the Nexus 5 a while back. What I did was to put the phone in recovery and let it drain till the battery wore out then charge it back to full while still in recovery. It took a while but seemed to stop the battery from both shutting down early or reaching 0% prematurely. Sounds weird I'm sure but it had an affect. Nothing to lose to try it.

I had a similar experience, changed out the battery in my device back in March. Performance is marginally better, but it still turns off at or around 15%. Nothing new out there to entice me yet, though Best Buy does have a great deal on the Pixel 2 XL with Verizon right now.
I was thinking about what it is about the Nexus 6 that has kept me with it for longer than any other phone. I decided that one of the many things I like is the 16:9 aspect ratio. The phone is thick, for sure, but 16:9 is just right. Not sure if I am ready for the 19:9 or 18.5:9 or whatever else is going on out there.
I just keep my phone plugged in at work, helps me get through the day both battery and performance wise.

i was having that problem on nougat around 40% ( pure nexus), used it for over 6 months, moved to oreo for couple of weeks. both aosip and lineage os. its worse. i am afraid to let it go bellow 70 because its my daily driver and i don't have a back up phone right now. i am not even rooted now because it adds to instability.
Update:
Within a week of my last Post it was so bad that I had to have the phone plugged in all the time. If unplugged phone would turn off around 95%. If I pull down quick setting bar it would shut off immediately. So I get a battery and replaced the old one. Took me an hour and half to fully charge more than 2 days ago. I'm not really using it. Off and on I would turn it on to check emails, browse little bit, play some videos etc. I'm at 11 percent now. Battery saver turned on at 15%. More than 4.5 jour sot.
At 9 percent now, no shut down yet. Not even one. I'll plug it in now.
Another thing I recently discovered is that revootimg into safe mode and then rebooting back in to regular mode clears up some issues. Anyone having random shutdown issues might want to try this. It seems to have good results so far for me. Phone is now more fluid than it has been since I bought it.

Donated my N6 to my kid. Bought OnePlus 6 for myself and 5 for my fem. My old N6 reflashed stock and it looses battery pretty quickly. Will try to do all those recommendations from above...
have any of you tried rebooting to bootloader, selecting Bootloader Logs and holding the power button down till it reboots trick?
For my N6 i put 2 battery in parrallel, and i got more than 8hours screen on !
But no more back-plastic-plate..
At least, i can handle a big day
For charging i'm force to use only fast-charge charger, under 800ma it take 20hours for full charge ! (5h in 5v1500ma and 1hours at 9v2A )
Lineage 16 - Popcorn Kernel + undervolt cpu -30mv*
Problem solved, at least 1more year with this phone for only 15$

Just buy 2 new battery, verify the voltage (they have to be the same before soldering) on one diconnect the BMS and use your soldering tool to put the two battery in parrallel
Keep using one BMS for connecting to the phone
You'll have to cut the plastic to fit the two battery, and you'll never be able to put the battery cache again of course, use some tape of your favorite color to protect the back ( if you don't put tape you will cut the BMS cable or damage the button connector )

Just want to share my experience...My nexus6 used as backup phone got same problem. I only use to stream live video and need to connect it to charger or powerbank to avoid random reboot. Then, last month I accidentally found e-commerce shop sell N6 battery around [email protected] and I tried my luck to change the battery... after changing to new battery and used almost 3weeks I found no more random reboot but battery life is not great in idle (using android9 custom rom) then I switch to android 8 custom rom..idle is improved but sot only can get 3hours only. Check with accubatery shows 3100mah...
