I suppose this could have been posted anywhere in XDA but since I just got a Pixel 6 I though I'd start here.
I'm using Mint Mobile and it's all good except visual voicemail in Google's Phone app won't activate. The My Visual Voicemail app activates and works fine. Calling voicemail works fine too.
The problem seems common for OnePlus users on T-Mobile's network but it's evident this is an old problem between lots of devices and carriers. And oddly, it seems to work or not under random conditions. When I sampled a Pixel 5a for a couple weeks using the same SIM, visual voicemail in the Phone app worked straight away and transcribed accurately.
So that nobody here wastes their time with suggestions, I've researched the problem and have probably already tried the most common suggestions short of factory reset. The only thing Mint Mobile can offer is resetting voicemail for a clean slate, which didn't help. Prior to that, network resets, clearing cache and data in both the Phone and My Visual Voicemail apps, rolling back the Phone app, many reboots and power downs... Whatever is tried I get the dreaded "Visual voicemail isn't working" error with or without My Visual Voicemail installed and activated.
I really like this feature in Google Phone when it works. I'm ok with moving on to an alternative like Google Voice for transcribed voicemail but I'm hard headed about getting something to work as designed. If anybody has figured this out I'd appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks!

I'm on TMobile and had the same issue. You need to remove all visual voicemail apps and carrier visual voicemail apps. Just uninstall them. Then go into Google phone and set up visual voicemail through settings and whatnot.

Thanks, but I tried that. Mint doesn't have their own vvm app like T-Mobile does and they recommend My Visual Voicemail which activates every time it's reinstalled. I'm talking myself into a factory reset but don't know if I should remove the SIM or leave it.

I'm confused. Are you saying you don't have any vvm apps installed already? If you do just humor me and try to remove all voicemail apps again and try Google dialer after. I had the same issue and for the life of me could not figure out how to use Google vvm, & it finally worked after all voicemail apps were uninstalled
Im on Tello mvo off t-mobile same thing T-mobiles app works but who want more 3rd party apps , googles never worked not on a pixel phone but its a common problem Ive flashed many roms currently on Arrow12 poco f-3 but it never worked on stock and all other roms ivied flashed so I just call VM its the best solution so far

No third party vvm or vm apps separate from Google Phone are installed. Whenever a vvm app was installed it was temporary. I understand that no other voicemail apps should be installed while using Google Phone's vvm.
First I tried getting Google Phone's vvm to activate. It never did after lots of trouble shooting (cleared storage in Phone, reset networks, rolled back Phone etc.). I installed My Visual Voicemail just to make sure it would activate. It does activate and works as expected. Knowing Mint's voicemail works fine with this app and probably others, and that calling voicemail works, focus is on Google Phone and/or the phone network.
The part that really peeves me is that Google Phone's vvm worked great on a Pixel 5a recently with the same SIM.

VVM works fine on Tello on my 3 XL. I just had to turn off wifi before I enabled the VVM switch, it wouldn't provision with wifi.
Wasnt working for me either. I decided to uninstall TMobile vvm and try it again and now the Google one is working. Maybe January fixed it for me.
I have RedPocket on AT&T's network. When I had the OnePlus 7t I had the same VVM issues the OP described. They reset stuff on my account & SIM with no luck. It had worked fine on the Pixel 3 I had before and it's working fine on the Pixel 6 I have now. It's probably as much a OnePlus problem then anything.

I read about trying this but in my case it didn't help.
I notice Mint Mobile's store recently added the Pixel 5a to their offerings but not the 6, yet. This has me wondering if there's a provisioning issue on the carrier side.
However, Mint customers in recent reddit posts describe a mixed bag that show no pattern at all. For some Pixel 6 users Google's vvm works but not for others.

Does the phone recognize your Mint SIM as being T-Mobile? I know that has caused problems before.
Honestly the MVNO situation with iPhone, Samsung, and Pixel can be really messy. My 12 Pro Max still doesn't get 5G on most T-Mobile MVNOs because T-Mobile moved them to new SIM cards that the T-Mobile bundle doesn't recognize (8901240 instead of T-Mobile's 8901260) and I've seen a wide range of complaints about MVNOs not working right on Pixels. I think it was Red Pocket that was being seen as "zipsim" or something on Pixels and broke a lot of features.
Buddy of mine got a 6 and he reported that Tello's VVM does not work so yeah, I guess I'll find out when I buy my 6 or 6 Pro in a few months.

Have you tried activating it over mobile data?
I switch phones a lot and have had your issue several times, most recently on my pixel 6. Disabling wifi while I opened the voicemail got it working, and it has in the past as well. (Might want to force stop and clear data and etc, maybe a reboot, then try on mobile data only.)

No, it's recognized as Mint in network settings plus the voicemail number that was setup is Mint's. The APN that's automatically configured is T-Mobile's but switching to Mint's wholesale APN makes no difference.
Doesn't mean you're not onto something. One difference between the Pixel 6 and 5a setups (again, Google's vvm worked on the 5a) is that Play Store installed a T-Mobile app on the Pixel 6 on its first day. I didn't think much of it until I saw a T-Mobile option under Default apps settings. Can't remember what that setting was but it didn't seem related to voicemail. When I uninstalled this app the setting under Default apps disappeard. Which was a relief because for a moment I broke out in a sweat thinking the T-Mobile model was shipped. I verified my phone is the unlocked model.
Over the weekend I may unlock the bootloader and root. Maybe wiping will make a difference.
Btw, Mint does in fact sell the Pixel 6, they're just out of stock.

Yes, many times usually connected to 5G. Tried setting LTE as the preference too.
I'm resigning myself to an alternative like Google Voice or Youmail. A friend with a OnePlus 8T TMO variant has never gotten native vvm to work with T-Mobile's network. His unanswered calls go to Google Voice and the Phone app's vvm works well with it.

Thanks for chiming in. Parts of that subreddit are informative while most of it repeats other articles I've seen. It's a mystery wrapped in a riddle but one thing is certain: if T-Mobile boffins can't figure it out no point in asking Mint about it unless we want the usual "Don't support it" or "Can't guarantee it" nonsense.
Interesting that there's a Mint voicemail number (18056377243) different than the one assigned by my Mint SIM (18056377456). We could try different numbers but the setting is greyed out in the Phone app. Changing the number would require removing the SIM to make the field editable but it'll probably revert back to the original number when the SIM reconnects.

Just FYI, the one Tello uses where my VVM works on my 3 XL is the same as Mint is using.
At this point it seems like an issue specific to 6/6 Pro because I have confirmation of VVM working on T-Mobile MVNOs with 3/4/5 and two people I know could not get it working on 6/6 Pro, both with Tello, who had it working on their last Pixel.

I don't think that's the case and for some Pixel 6 users it's working. There's no logical pattern except that OnePlus models on T-Mobile's network stand out the most. AT&T and Verizon customers have reported the issue too.

OK, I know I'll probably get slammed, but I searched and searched and can't find the answer...
I'm coming from the Nexus One on ATT where google voice worked flawlessly. Now, on Verizon with the Thunderbolt, it's a nightmare. Incoming calls don't get my Gvoice message, just a notice saying to enter a PIN. Also, Gvoice isn't showing the correct outgoing caller ID... even though everything "appears" to be setup properly in Gvoice settings and on the Thunderbolt.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!! Any ideas?
The information on the Google Voice Settings page didn't work for me. Telling you to dial some crazy * #### blah blah blah.
So I did some calling to Verizon and dug deeper. In order to get GV on your VZW, you need to do these steps:
*71[Google Voice Number]
*90[GVnumber]
*92[GVnumber]
Then GV should work.
I was in the same boat as you. Upgraded from TMO Nexus to this and was going crazy trying to figure out why GV wouldn't work.
Hope it helped?
Why don't u just fork out the money for Verizon's awesome visual voicemail! What a joke. Don't think Verizon likes gv.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I just installed the app, dialed *xxxxxxxxxx (whatever number i was told to dial by the app or site) and it seems to be working fine. I've never used it before though, so I'll update this if something goes wrong.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I did that and the voicemail still were intercepted by Verizon
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I just followed the directions on google.com/voice and mine worked fine. My voicemail gets picked up by GV.
i had previously set up gvoice with sprint so what I had to do in gvoice was delete my cell number and re-set it up so it would register with Verizon. Works fine after that.

Thanks for the post, let me try it out. Also, after digging more at Google.com, I found these bonus codes depending on what network we're on...
Verizon (CDMA network): *71[GVnumber] AND *90[GVnumber] AND *92[GVnumber]
Verizon (TDMA Network): *74[GVnumber] and *73[GVnumber]
What net are we on with LTE?
Worked! THANKS!
Worked fine for me with just the *71-XXX-XXX-XXXX code BOTH times I had to set it up (thursday new phone, last night after rooting). I just called myself from my Skype out # and it rolled to GV voicemail.

That code only sets up forwarding for one group of calls. Unfortunately, you need to setup GVoice on the Thunderbolt to properly forward BOTH unanswered (missed) calls, and ignored (intentionally declined) calls. The two different actions are handled differently by Verizon - hence the multiple dial-in codes. Although I don't know what the third code is for.

I'm not going to get into a huge back and forth over it, but I just tested my Thunderbolt phone both ways...I called it and let it go unanswered, and then I called it and hit the decline button on the screen. Both times it rolled to my Google Voice voicemail. I only set it up with the *71 code.
I'm not disputing that your experience may be different, but that's how it worked for me.
Whenever I try to add my new Verizon phone number, it shows up as a Gizmo account no matter what I select (Mobile, Home, or Work).
Just what I was looking for, thanks!
works the same as it did for me from my og droid. i wish there would be an icon telling me what number the people are calling me on. i have a bunch of people call the wrong number and i never know what line its on.
I had Google voicemail set up on T-Mobile with my N1, MyTouch 4G and it worked perfect. Tried to set it up on my Thunderbolt with Verizon and I went thru the set up procedure, dialed the *71 and my google # then *90 and finaly *92. When I was done I tried to call myself and see if it works, I get a message asking me to put the # I am trying to call and hit the pound button. Please help, Love Google Voice and I tried Verizon tech help and absolutely useless, tried to sell me theirs.
Please anyone, I want that Google voicemail app working.

The typical way to get rid of this is to call yourself and leave a voicemail then delete that voicemail. I've had this problem on Android devices in general on the last few iterations of the OS. The problem with the Mediapad is that most of us have a data only plan on our tablets.
I had a similar problem when I asked T-Mo to disable voicemail on my prepaid SIM. Ever since, any device I plug the SIM into remains convinced that there's a new voicemail. This has remained the case for 1.5 years now. Perhaps this is an overall problem with their provisioning of accounts that don't have voice/voicemail.

I doubt it. For an unrelated reason I had to do a SIM swap on one of my trips to the USA, and the VM icon problem persisted through to the new SIM.
I think it's an issue in the way the accounts are provisioned. And T-Mobile hasn't managed to figure out a solution because I tried with them several times.

For me at least this won't work because I have neither a phone app or a dialer app. Nothing to clear, I personally think this is a provisioning issue that T-Mobile needs to deal with.

The only problem I see though is if I turn the device completely on then turn it on again the VMail icon appears again. But that's okay. At least I know how to clear it when I'm working on my tablet so that I don't accidentally touch it again (which I've done many times).

Yes, it's working for me on my Sprint Galaxy S8 +. I did have trouble were it wouldn't work right away, had to wait like 24-48 hours after I activated the phone on my line for the system to provision it or whatever. Just keep trying and eventually it should complete and go through.
I use Android Messaging because the Samsung app supposed to have RCS and play nice with Android messages but when Ive sent messages from the Samsung app it acts like I dont have RCS at all
Doesn't work
I have had my phone for a few weeks but it still doesn't work. Every time I try it, it tells me Excuse the wait... Messages will let you know when this step is complete but it never completes.
Strange I was able to enable it on my wifes S8+ but mine will not enable. Tried clearing cache and uninstall and reinstall. Anyone else had this issue?
I chatted with TEP and Sprint, they sent me a new sim card and that didn't resolve it. I factory reset the phone twice and that didn't resolve it. I called Sprint and Sprint said to call Samsung.
Here is the definitive answer from Samsung "It is being rolled out in batches and certain versions of the phone have not received that update."

WHAT!!!!! NICE....thanks alot:good::good::good:
I discovered how to activate T-Mobile visual voicemail on a Mate 10 (non-pro). I read it on a T-mobile forum so I cannot take credit. I will say this first - even though I can get it to install, and activate, it appears to be causing my phone to not have data/internet access, unless I toggle mobile-data. Then it will continue to work until I reboot the phone at which time my data access/internet access stops. I have all 4G/LTE/ APN's setup correctly so I am not sure why this happens. I have since uninstalled the T-Mobile version of visual voicemail and the problem is resolved. GO figure!
Now here is what you need to do to get it activated in the first place. If you have the app already installed I recommend that you uninstall it before we start. After you have it uninstalled go to settings > wireless & networks > call settings > (under SIM 1 which is the only one I use) tap on additional settings > voicemail > toggle OFF visual voicemail. Now you can install T-Mobile visual voicemail and follow the prompts to allow access to contacts, etc., etc, and it should activate without issue.
Now if anyone can get it to continue working after a reboot without having to toggle mobile data then please let me know.
Also...does anyone know what the default, built in visual voicemail even does on EMUI 8.0, or how to access some app for it to work? Seems useless to me other than to block the T-Mobile app from activating.

GO figure!

Sounds like you are having the same issue as the guy in post #2.
I am very happy with using Google Voice instead of visual voicemail. Wouldn't go back even if I could get it working. In addition to everything VVM does, you also get free voice-to-text on voicemail messages, as well as automatic caller ID lookup.
This is so weird, after installing and activating tmobile visual voicemail the data/ 4G LTE shuts off and won't come back until Immediately after uminstalling visual Voicemail. I've tried wiping cache and resetting network settings. Doesn't help. I can't imagine it's just my phone. Also, when I uninstall visual, I don't get any notifications after receiving a VM to check the old fashioned way by dialing 1. So strange.

I'm on AT&T and I installed their VVM and it was OK afterwards, afterall, it's just a file download from their servers.
I know on AT&T that when I make a voice call, the modem kicks down to HSPA+ (lose the LTE logo) for the duration of the call. This is because AT&T does not support VoLTE on these phones. I don't know the technical details of why.
Sometimes after the call ends, it takes a while for the LTE mode to kick in again. I wonder if something like this is happening on your phone ?
Yeah i know I don't have volte on tmobile either but it's definitely something with VM app that's screwing me. I'll hope an update fixes it either from tmobile or. 146. For now I'll just have to check VM manually. Also when I finish a call the LTE comes back very quickly so Im happy with that. Data seems to work pretty fast browsing internet while on phone call so that's good too.
Anything else with this? I'm thinking about getting one as I hear the battery is unreal along with the camera. Those 2 things are huge for me. If I could get all day with battery I'd be so happy. I'm a power user and can't get all day on any device.
Any news on wifi calling?
TIA
