Hello, I am a beginner to modding Android and I want to get a cheap tablet to mess around with so that I can gain modding experience and knowledge before I do it on my main phone (LG G7 ThinQ [T-Mobile])
Here are the things that I'm looking for in the tablet:
-under $200 USD
-beginner friendly for modding
-good modding support/documentation online or within the XDA forums (things like articles or tutorials on how to root the device and solve common issues with it)
-good custom ROM support
I know of the Fire HD 8/10 and the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite. I've turned away from the Fire 8/10 tablets because from what I've seen online, you would need to take apart the device and temporarily short something on the device in order to root it or unlock the bootloader. It is also easy for someone to screw up the exploit that is needed to unlock the bootloader, which requires something (i think preloader) to be temporarily bricked. For the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite, trying to root it and tripping Knox would void the warranty, which I would like to keep just in case i need to return it to Samsung for a RMA or something. If there is a way to root and install a custom rom on the tablet without tripping Knox and voiding warranty, let me know!
bump for attention

Hello
My friend is gonna unlocking his Sony Xperia Z2 tablet SGP511 but he is very afraid that unlocking a bootloader bricks his tablet because his tablet is 2 months old. he don't use any Sony apps so he don't care if he lose his DRM key. i really need your real answer and a explanation about why it can brick or why it can't brick. thank you
bump. i need answer
It can brick the tablet, but it does not have to. Otherwise no one would do it...
He just needs to do it properly
If he follows the instructions properly then it can only brick if there is a hardware fault.
OTOH what he does with the unlocked bootloader afterwards ROFL... plenty of brick-able things you can flash!!!!!
If he's that much of a n00b that he has to ask, I would advise him to stick with stock. if he wants to mess around with ROMs etc. get a Nexus, that's what they're for.
Any other Android OEM (except for Xiaomi I believe) unlocking bootloader and custom ROMs involve extra complications and / or loss of functionality / loss of warranty.
Hello everyone,
I just received the z2 that I purchased a few weeks ago. It is the D6503 and it should be running 4.2.2. I am coming from the Galaxy line, so I am a little unfamiliar with the nuances of the Sony software. While I do not need to install a custom rom just yet, I am looking at rooting it and running lollipop on it. However, I do not want to lose the stability and ability that comes with having my DRM intact. Can someone provide me with a little guidance on the direction to go with getting rooted and on lollipop?
Thanks everybody for your help.
Downgrade to 4.4.2, then install the XZDR. That will give you a working recovery so you can install a prerooted firmware in .zip format.
It will not be modified, just plain boring firmware with root and recovery.
Thank you very much. I know the stock will likely be boring, but since I just got the phone, I want to keep my warranty within reach until I am sure there are no issues with it. Plus, it does get bothersome losing the benefits of DRM, so I want to at least see what Sony's hardware has to offer before I take it down a notch.
Hey everyone
I'm new here. So I repair mobile phones, tablets, Apple products, computers for a living. So I'm very familiar with the hardware side but I'm completely new to rooting. I'm also familiar with Jailbreaking for iPhones but from what I can see, it's a bit more complicated maybe?
I have a galaxy S6 Edge (Model SM-G925W8) with Bell, in Canada. I'd like to root it but I'm so afraid I'll brick it and then they won't cover it under warranty. It's still under warranty. The reason I'd like to root: I wanted to backup my current, original version of Android BEFORE I upgrade to 5.1.1 in case I experience problems with battery drain or I just plain don't like it. I've heard, to do that, I have to root. Once I root and do that, then I may look into doing other things.
I've been reading mixed reviews on reliable roms? for this version of the Edge. If anyone can point me in the right direction and tell me , step for step, what I have to do to successfully root this and 'jailbreak' the phone, that would be great. thanks! !
Even if you do you won't be able to restore it with that type of backup. You will have to flash a stock firmware.

And flashing a stock firmware means I could go back to the previous version of Android? Where or how would I obtain the stock firmware? I know with Apple products it kind of goes by the serial # so someone e'se wouldn't work. For lack of better terms. Like I said, I'm completely new to rooting and a new Android user. Thanks.
Hello there my Aunt bought a Samsung S4 in the UK for a friend and it is locked to the Verizon network. I built my own wee PC so I won't need kid gloving through the whole procedure, but what I would appreciate is some advice on what I might need to do in terms of effecting an unlock so the device can function on the UK networks. Will I need to just Root, or will I need to Flash an alternate OS to remove all trace of Verizon software, and then Root the new OS if I wish?
http://www.xda-developers.com/root/#samsung
I found this page, relating to the S4, will this do the job? If so great. I don't have an SD but I do have a wireless connection on the phone but I might need the memory on the SD to apply the root or the Flash as I understand. A little basic advice in terms of hardware required and recommended actions would really help a lot.
Android Version 5.0.1
Baseband I545VRUGOC1
KERNAL 3.4.0
SEC SOFT MDF v1.0 / VPN v1.4
HARDWARE I545.06
My Aunt also has a OnePlus One (Cyanogen) bought on my recommendation, I think rooting might be wise to allow me to lower the CPU clock a little and eek more battery life out of it, do you agree and do you find rooting to be beneficial without overcomplicating things?
Many thanks in advance
Sincerely
Lumpy

First of all, I don't know about the UK, but make sure your carrier has the same antennas as the s4.
Second, since you have OC1, you need to use the Desktop King root, google it(its chinese, all we have)..
Third, The only ROM that works on OC1 is Stang5litre's ROM and his Phoenix Port.
Fourth, as far as the CPU clock, someone else can answer that.
Fifth, for the kingroot, you need your PC and a USB cable.
TBH there are kernel editing apps with root, but the s4 charges in one hour and has a replaceable battery. Using xposed greenify and stang5litres rom lasts me the day with spare. AFAIK the Phoenix port is mdk/safestrap only, and the albe65 s6 port is also an option. Another root gaining method is wondershare, which is in English. Stang5litre's rom gives a huge boost in battery life and is bloat free, so I recommend rooting and maybe flashing. If your feeling savvy maybe even try xposed(use the one modified for Samsung). The s4 without root is good but to truly have the full power, use root. Unlike some devices, rooting and flashing won't void you warrantee atleast with wondershare for root and flashfire for flashing. Just flash stock with Odin if you send it for repairs.
Hello,
Newbie Here. So, this might be a stupid question.....
I recently installed lineage 14.1 in my Nexus 7 and followed up with installing addonsu-remove-arm-signed, which allows me to unroot and root pretty freely. I have pretty simple needs with my Nexus 7 and root mainly to get rid of bloat, but keep it unroot almost all of the time (security?). There are some very nice performance apps for rooted androids that don't work after I am in unrooted mode.
Is there anything performance oriented that I can do to improve my pad in root that would continue to be effective when I unroot the device?
Thank you very much,
Tam
