Question Fingerprint - Google Pixel 6

I have come to the conclusion that Google gave up on the under the screen optical fingerprint reader. Tried with out a screen protector, tried turned on off touch screen sensitivity. Any idea?

It's a known issue ever since launch and nothing seems to be working out. I've enrolled 6 fingerprints and success rate is less than 50% first time. I gave up on this after using it for couple of weeks and accepted the fact that there's no solution.

I'm on a P6a but probably similar situations. I was even worse with about 25% success rate and couldn't even add a FP. I signed up for QPR1 Beta 1 yesterday and the FPR is flawless. 100% in the time I have it running (other than missing the sensor half way once). It basically fixes it. FP added as well and it works.

Thanks for the update. I have beta update available but haven't installed it yet. Let me do it over the weekend.

FWIW, I have been using an IQShield screen protector on my Pixel 6 without issue. Close to 100% success rate for fingerprints. I'm really curious what causes some people to experience problems, and others not.

I'm starting to wonder if this is a per-device thing or something. I got mine a few days ago and have been using it constantly, and it hasn't missed a fingerprint read yet.
Out of curiosity, do y'all have dry skin or something? I wonder if it has anything to do with how well your fingertip flattens against the glass.

Well, after installing the latest beta QPR 1, this issue is resolved.. 100% success rate

No dry skin or other issues coz I've been using onscreen fingerprin from ages but definitely device issue i guess, which is now resolved.

I took advise on the beta. Opt in. Fingerprint works great. Never ever use the privacy screen protector either. That blocks the fingerprint, and enrollment.

Since the June update, never had any issue with the fingerprint again. Before it was hit and miss.
You guys have the Pixel 6a?
Cheers

The two best tricks I am aware of are:
-Registering the same finger more than once
-Using hand lotion frequently to avoid dry skin

Well, looks strange, is ultrasonic so has nothing to do with the case... i think is fake but who knows
I'm calling BS on that story. How can a case affect the workings of the fingerprint reader?

YEAH, that was my first thought also. I could almost see it if it was a S10e but there'd have to be some serious crap going on for a case to defeat a screen reader.
Well only one way to find out buy $3 case and do it our self....

This is an old problem, which occurred 2 month after the official release of this phone to the market. I was able to repro it back in April on my S10, but after 1/2 months all had been fixed.
In every case remember that protective glass not compatible with ultrasonic fingerprint require more pressure on the screen, and this translates into less accuracy in saving and reading the finger data.

(Updated with new link.)
So it wasn't a gel case then and a screen protector. That makes more sense now as you can see how the screen protector can affect the fingerprint reader. Just tested mine to be sure and only the registered fingerprint can unlock it.

Same here. I tried all my fingers and only the 2 registered fingers can unlock my phone. I kept the factory installed screen protector on for a day before I finally couldn't stand it anymore and removed it. Even with the factory installed screen protector, I still could only unlock my phone with the 2 registered fingers.

I don't see it as a big problem when the phone first came out. If XDA is a good representation then the fingerprint reader didn't even work for the owners own fingers, much less a stranger's. ?

This. Sad, but very true.

S10e unaffected?
If I understand the reports correctly, the following has happened:
You install a screen protector and THEN register your prints. The sensor "reads" the structure of the protector, not your prints. Hence, it does not matter, what finger is used as the protector unlocks the phone. However, this also means - as I understand it - that if you register you fingerprints with Samsung's or another protector that does not have the problem (or without any screen protecor), you are safe. The reports sound as if anybody could just unlock your phone by using a $3 screen protector. That is not the case, as I understand it. So basically, just try if you can unlock your phone with fingers you have not registered. If that does not work, you are safe.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
EDIT: The videos in the link below seem to suggest otherwise...

It effects the Samsung Galaxy Tab s6 which uses an optical fingerprint sensor. The ultrasonic and the optical sensors are entirely different. So it has to be a software bug. Which can be patched.

Just tried this with mine using two cases and thankfully it doesn't unlock. Weird bug
I've disabled fingerprint authentication for my payment & banking apps just to be safe and set them to use the good old pin.
Samsung will start rolling out the fix for this issue within the next 24 hours apparently.
Got the update!
I'm sorry, I posted this in another thread, but I will also ask here.
Does anyone know this:
If you are with the factory applied screen protector, do you have to also remove it and re-register your fingerprints after updating? Or this is only for other screen protectors (silicone)?
It's not very clear from the update explanation.

The initial statement from Samsung that I read said it was only for third party screen protectors. I did see another one that said all screen protectors, so yeah that is a little confusing.
The initial story I read said it was from a cheap screen protector then there was another story that said it was a cheap silicone case then it switched again to a cheap screen protector. Then the statement from Samsung was about screen protectors. Definite confusion. I removed the factory installed one after a day because I could feel the edge every time I swiped up or from the side and it annoyed me.

S21 fingerprint sensor reliability

I have recently got an S21 Exynos version and the fingerprint reader is useless.
I have the standard screen protector it came with on it and have tried training it multiple times and even doing the same finger more than once and the best I get is sometimes it works 80% of the time and then at other times of the day it'll fail 100%.
I'm not sure if it depends on if my hands are cold or warm and looking at my fingers my fingerprints don't look particularly pronounced but as it stands the phone may as well not have a fingerprint scanner.
Previous phones with dedicated fingerprint sensors have been better but never perfect.
Is this just me or do others have lots of problems too?
This is my first phone with an in-display fingerprint reader, and I certainly prefer ones like the one on my old Note 9, which were literally flawless.
That said, I would classify this one as "serviceable". It doesn't always work, though some of that might be my dry fingers/hands from all the washing and drier winter air. It seems to be improving in reliability as the weather warms and the air gets more humid. I do occasionally fail enough on the fingerprint that I have to enter my password, which is annoying to say the least.
Blowing warm, moist air on my fingers does tend to help, but then I tend to smudge up the screen a bit more. Oh well. Something I'll have to live with.

Sadly this doesn't seem to make any difference.
It's very erratic, sometimes it works several times in a row but at others it doesn't work at all for multiple attempts.
Very odd.
I've recently got my S21 and rather quickly found out that I have to push the screen very lightly and it works almost every time. To begin with I assumend that I had to push quite hard, but doing that it didn't work very well, so I stumpled on the light press tip. Anyone else with the same experiences?

It worked with the factory protector on it every time. No need to press deep or medium even. Just worked. Soon as a o removed this for some glass protection, boom. It simply will not work. And I've blown way too much money on protectors that do not work! Really sad, since I came from multiple Chinese budget flagships that do this perfectly. Since they use light instead of sound/vibrations.

I've switched from my trusty old Oneplus 5T to the S21 Exynos version, and I'm seriously regretting it. The fingerprint sensor is useless with or without a screen protector, and with Settings -> Display -> Touch Sensitivity turned on. I've deleted all fingerprints and rescanned them in multiple times (obviously after removing/applying a screen protector) and nothing works.

I've gone back to thin film for the display. It will not provide any drop protection but this way the fingerprint works of the time. Like it does without the protector. First time in many many years I'm skipping glass protection. I actively avoid curved displays and one reason for that is the glass protectors are horrible compared to flat display protectors.
I don't have any kind of screen on my S21 and so far (only had it a couple of days) the fingerprint sensor has been pretty reliable. I've even almost got to the point where I can wake up the phone by putting my finger in the right spot about 50% of them time (other times I need to tap the screen so it will show me where to put my finger).

Question Fingerprint reader tip

If your like me and have struggled with the reader try this method.
Place finger on read and slowly move it up.
Works for me everytime and merry Xmas to you all
Being required to do anything "slowly" isn't a tip. It's a bad reader, and Google needs to acknowledge it. Bad design and implementation on their part. That's it.
never had a problem with mine using the wiping forehead method for the enrolment. Slower than my Oneplus yes, but never failed

I have no problem with the fingerprint reader and I'm using a 3rd party screen protector on the display.
I just got the TOCOL screen protectors after having the phone for a few weeks. Once I put them on I redid my fingerprints for fun and it seems to work just as before. I didn't boost my sensitivity either.
Still no luck for me after adding the screen protector
Zero replies actually acknowledging the advice.
After trying this it seems to work!
I do:
Place
Move a few mm
Stop.
Works great!
I have a Zagg and am still not impressed but this is helping a lot!!

Try the Gadgetshieldz screen protector which I'm using for a month now, I have no issue with the fingerprint sensor as I mentioned before.
Oddly, while the reader is slower than the one on the back of my Pixel 2XL, I've had no problems with the reader at all unless I move my finger while it's trying to scan. When you guys set up your fingerprints did you follow the advice given and moved your finger so the scanner could scan different portions of the fingerprint during the setup?
Got a Spigen screen protector on and the right thumb is more hit and miss than the left thumb. Unlock rate is about 6/10 for left and 4/10 for the right thumb. They need to fix this issue, little things like this can get annoying. Came from FaceID which was instant no matter in day or total darkness.
I set my phone up straight out of the box and I haven't had a single issue with the fingerprint reader at all. Idk if it's my skin, how I place my thumb on the phone, etc.. I was honestly prepared to have it be awful from everything I've read but mine isn't

Tocol completely destroyed the ability of my FPR to recognize fingerprints, with or without sensitivity enhancement, with or without forehead fat, etc. But I do have very dry skin.
Thanks - tried and so far seems to improve pass rate....not 100% successful mind you.. Maybe I am moving the finger too much..

Question FingerPrint Reader Woes w/Whitestone Dome Glass

Sunday night updated to the Jan security update on the Pixel 6. Prior to that, the finger print reader was working (but barely). I got distracted and forgot to check how the fingerprint recognition was working. The next day, forgot completely about the update and installed the Whitestone dome protector (which went mostly good but I've got three small bubbles, but that's another story).
After installing the dome, they recommend retraining the reader. However, even after training with multiple fingers, the reader, very, very rarely works probably less than 1% of the time if even that. Any ideas what I could try to improve the accuracy? The January update seems to have improved accuracy for most people. I just wish I had tested out the January update more thoroughly before adding the screen protector.
I bought the Dome glass, too. After replace it with the old glass protection the fingerprint was worse than before.
I trained the new, but not better.
What helped for me was to train the FPS again with more pressure of the finger on the FPS. Now it's working almost like the old protection.

No, I never activated it...
I just installed the Whitestone Dome yesterday. My fingerprint seemed to work the same but I went ahead and did a retrain. I think it is still close to without it (WD) except for 1 finger. I had an issue with that same finger on my old OP6T. Good Luck.
I also installed yesterday Whitestone Dome, the fingerprint reader works just like before almost every time. I never had any problems with the FPR, it only failed when I lifted the thumb to early. I did not retrain my thumb, increased Touch sensivity is still disabled. I don't know if it matters, but 4 finger profiles are my thumb.

General Feb Google play system update

I just saw the new Feb update for Google play system come in. I don't know how but after the install my fingerprint scanner speed is significantly faster. As in 0.7 seconds before registration where is was previously about1.5 seconds. I am super happy!
Is this just a placebo effect or do more of you experience a more responsive fp reader?
Placebo. Your finger is probably just more oily/moist than usual. The sensor on this phone hates dry fingers.
I removed the tempered glass protector and re-enrolled fingers which took forever. The fingerprint sensor became stupider. Is this placebo?
No I installed this a few hours ago and tried it myself and I see a 100 % improvement over what it was before. My fingers are not oily actually they are pretty dry. Now if they could just fix this mobile network standby using 30% battery I would be happy.
And as a side note does anyone know if the Google store unlocked version of pixel 6 is working with Verizons c band?
It's very weird I remember in 2016 my buddy was on Verizon and his LTE was 100+ Mbps download. Now I don't get anything near that. 50 at most on LTE. If I get 5g it's between 80 and 100. I was hoping c band would give me 300 but I don't know how to test c band. Verizon clamis my town gets c-band but I haven't seen it yet. Maybe I need an update to activate it. I see on Verizon website that pixel 6 is supported but that's the Verizon branded one.
I wonder if I sideload and install Verizon specific builds for this phone if that would work.
fingerprint seems better for me as well. i'm on t-mobile getting 600+ Mbps down in boston
Just updated and from initial impressions (about 10 unlocks) it seems more accurate than before.
Edit: After being out and about today, which was a chilly day in England, I found the sensor almost 100% useless and had to use pin unlock most of the time.

I think this is common in cold weather even with reliable fingerprint sensors, especially if there's bright sunlight to confuse the sensor more.
A sysinfo app called DevCheck detects a Goodix fingerprint sensor. When I looked it up I came across an article saying these sensors are high quality and used in other phones with in-screen fingerprint sensors. Point being that software ought to be able to fix Pixel 6 problems. I'm confident it'll get ironed out eventually but for now I've given up on mine. I don't mind using a PIN. Mainly I'd like fingerprint access to Keepass2Android which worked fine with my old $200 phone.

I agree problems will get ironed out. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with the sensor as it works 100% successfully on banking apps. It is only the initial unlock where there seems to be a problem. My Oneplus 7pro never had a problem whatever the weather conditions though.

A friend with an 8T tells me the same thing about cool weather but he fumbles if temps are "really cold". I would think this is normal but I really don't know. Pixel 6 is my first phone with an in-screen fingerprint sensor and whatever I know about the tech I've learned in the past month.
In my case enrollment barely works so I've had limited experience unlocking. Maybe it's my imagination but it seemed slightly better while on the January update. Other than that, no other gripes and I consider myself lucky.
