Can we still do old school android custom rom style zips? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im trying to make port a rom for my MI9 and I am having a hard time understanding the new android system of this system.new.dat thing. afte ra series of steps I got it extracted back to way system folder and made my edits but I cant get it back into a format that new androids can take (something along i cant generate a transfer list) the last time i made custom roms was back for android 2 & 4. I also tried making a img file (which worked) but its over 4gb so i cant get it in my phones storage and even if i do it complains about source is bigger then target. in all ways im stuck.

[Q] Making updater-script... doesn't make any sense!!

I was tying to make a fancy updater-script for an add-on for my ROM, but I kept getting a Status 6 error when flashing, so I stripped it back to nothing, just the most basic commands, and eventually got it to work. I made a copy, tried editing it to add the fancy stuff back in... broke again.
So I stripped the copy back to the basic commands... and it still breaks .
As far as I can see, the two files I have attached are identical in every single way, but one fails with a Status 6, the other flashes (BattMod works, update doesn't). Both are edited using gedit on Ubuntu, both zips are created in Ubuntu, neither are signed.
Can anyone see why, I am really tearing my hair out here... all I want to do is add some ui_prints and some progress bars .
I haven't looked it them yet, but make sure you are using the correct update-binary. Different ones support different number of parameters in the mount command.
Don't leave junk files in the update like updater-script.old, it's bad practice
My guess would be that since it's named update.zip, it's looking for a signature and it can't find one. Try renaming update.zip to battmod.zip and see if it works, or sign it first with testsign.

With what are you editing it?
I've found out that editing it with notepad or any program won't work even if i'm using the right commands, so i decided to use amend2edify, you select an update-script (an update-script you can edit it with notepad without any problem) and it converts it into updater-script, updater-binary, but you have the possibility to edit anything in the output that you want and save it, or just copy-paste into the output the commands in your updater-script onto output by overwriting the converted output.
Don't know if i explained myself well.
Good luck
Try This One
Blank-CWM.zip
It's made for the Moto Photon, so you will need to:
1) Replace the update-binary with one from your phone.
2) Copy the file you wish to flash
3) Delete the txt files in it as well as any folders that you do not need to use in the process of flashing
4) Be sure to set the permissions to target the folder or file you are flashing. If you do NOT update this, you will end up in bootloops (Don't say I didn't warn you)
5) Flash away
Cheers!

Flashing 4.2 ROMs moves sdcard to /0

When i flash a 4.2 rom, my entire sdcard is nested in a /0 folder in my new sdcard location. From what i understand this has to do with the new users feature. Its pretty confusing and if i don't take the time to move my entire sdcard back from /0 (takes some time) i end up with nested folders like /sdcard/0/0/0 and everything is hard to find. Is there any way to avoid this other than manually moving my whole sdcard every time a flash a new ROM? I know im not the only flashaholic here lol

You need to update your recovery... the newer version of TWRP & CWM don't create nested user folders!

Well, i use the CWM touch 6.0.2.7-i9300 (latest version on cwm site) and the issue stay. All roms bases on the latest cyanogenmod (4.2) have this issue too, or because in that is common have a modified recovery, or because a issue with recovery + new kernels (seems to be related with multi user, i never try this feature and probaly never use, my phone is just for me).
Being a work really hard test new roms, especially with software that seek its parameters to specific folders without option to search / select the folders.
a good update would implement a feature to let the user choose a folder where the files are, like nandroid backups, seems to be possible in TWRP, but not in CWM.
This is one, but still have to move the all other files to see them properly in all apps (yes, i know, titanium lets to choose where the backup files are) but with only 16GB (most common models) the storage is quickly filled with duplicated files/folders and cause confusion to the user where to look or put your files.
realy hard ...

[Q] LG Realm Stock Recovery

Ok, I have root and have used it quite effectivly as well as the apps/programs available. That is, until now. While tired and foggy headed, I went ahead and copied a file into my System folder. However, the way I did it was oh so very stupid. Instead of actually copying the file itself over, I decided to copy the System folder that 1 file was sitting in over onto the device. Oh lucky day, doing that wiped everything but that one file from the System folder so that my phone had a heart attack and I had to pull the battery. Saying a prayer to the Root Gods, I turned my phone back on and, you guessed it, it went to the recovery screen with the happy Update Android sitting there. Due to not having a recovery image or file to be able to recover my phone, I am in need of some assistance. I hope someone out there can help me. Any further questions for me, please ask.
I really hope someone can help me with this.

Don't have an LG Realm myself but I couldn't really understand the problem. Is it a Qcom or MTK device? Can you access recovery? Can you access ROM? Can you access Emergency/Download Mode? Does the device turn on?
I am attaching a pocture of the screen. After i wiped out the root system folder, the phone had to be hard restarted so i pulled the battery. When the phone went to restart, it didnt go to the loading screen. It went to the Android System Recovery screen. The android Installing System Update screen is there and all i can do is use the volume keys to go between options. One of them is Apply Update From External Sdcard, the rest are to apply from inside the phone, which cant happen because of my goof up. It also says E:missing bitmap stage_empty and missing stage_fill.

What happens when you are pressing power button when on reboot system now?
I have actually tried all the options. Reboot brings me back to that screen after the LG splash screen. The other options look for the recovery in the phone, which is not there. That was why i was looking for a possible recovery file to put on my sdcard and use the external sdcard option.

How you managed to delete /system partition describe me please. The thing is that I don't find any Stock Rom you can flash... Well tell me how you got it deleted and if you made a backup somehow first.
Like i said in my op, i never did anything this stupid before. I ended up copying another system folder on top of the original. The one i copied only had 1 file in it that was for my signal. However, when it copied over, it replaced the folder with everything needed to keep my android phone working with the folder with just the one file. And like an idiot, i never made a backup of my phone after i rooted it. Like i said, i am actually not a beginner at this, just made a big mistake of instead of just moving the one file over.

It's **** we need to flash a new Firmware on your phone nothing where I can fine one there is a way though. Give me a pm with this:
Your IMEI
Your S/N
the name of phone (EX. LG P710) the number and letter if there is not Realm. Ofc IMEI S/N of the phone. Not here in pm .
this sounds exactly like my problem. I have two LG realms. I was messing around with the build.prop on one of them. I saved the original but somehow when I copied and pasted it back into sys file, the phone gets a black screen of death right after the boot screen. I am able to get into the stock recovery, but no further. I'm thinking that a copy of the stock firmware is my only help.
Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I have the same problem. Come on, don't leave us hanging please!

[Q] Ellipsis 7 Default ROM?

So, I dun goofed trying to change the default font on my Ellipsis 7 after rooting it, and now it won't get past the Verizon boot screen. Since it's such a cheap, generic tablet that no one wants to make anything for, I can't even find a stock rom for it. What should I do? Is there even anything I can do?
I used Root Genius to root it and I tried replacing the Roboto fonts manually. I have the fonts backed up on the internal storage in the fonts folder, and I've backed up my data to an SD card and wiped it off of the internal memory. That didn't affect the system folder, though, so I still can't do anything. I really don't want to buy another tablet, but it might be a better idea to do that since there's practically nothing out there for the one I have.
UPDATE: Since no one has said anything, and I can't find any roms online, I'm looking for anyone that even has an Ellipsis 7 so I can make a flashable .zip from another tablet's /system folder.
Did you ever get this fixed? I have a rooted Ellipsis 7.
If you can post a firmware file for from your device that will be great. Cannot find stock from anywhere to reflash device

possible bios firmware dump "HP Chromebook 11 G1"
