A few questions to build ROM

I am in the process of building my own rom, but have a few questions for some devs that have built theirs.
1. When I use dsixdas kitchen, when it unpacks system.img with ext2explore, the program crashes after it finishes. I do not know if it is fully unpacking the img file as it is 800+mb and the system dir is only 600+mb (dont know exact numbers off top of my head). Does anyone else have this issue? Can I get a directory listing of all files from someone the program did not crash on?
2. Can the weather*.mp4 files be removed from system media? What about the image files in customize/resource? wtf is the sound in the mms folder of system/media? What about removing languages from tts?
Sorry for asking so many questions, just figured they needed to be asked. I will try figuring this all out for myself, but am going to backup my wimax keys first, dont want to lose those, though I guess TEP would fix it for me. Anyways, thanks for any help

[Q] CM7/9 and Motorola WidgetClock

Trying to find a way to get the WidgetClock that runs with NoattachTrix, GingerMod roms and i think most blur based roms to work on CM7 or CM9 roms, I have looked for the apk files and this is all i can find
com.motorola.widgetapp.worldclock.tar.gz
com.motorola.widgetapp.worldclock.apk
com.gusya.android.dockclock-20120227-230831.tar.gz
com.gusya.android.dockclock-20120227-230831.properties
com.android.deskclock-20120227-230432.tar.gz
com.android.deskclock-20120227-230432.properties
com.android.deskclock-7b6e38e70c532142663ed413bdfce579.apk.gz
com.gusya.android.dockclock-7a7a35ecd86184b1c03a211a78c9c4a.apk.gz
com.gusya.android.dockclock.apk
anyone know the specific file or files i need to move over in order to get the desk dock to use the correct widget while docked.
The latest titanium backup for the .apk files are inside the .tar.gz files.
I would extract them, then add them one at a time (rename your originals on your phone to something else) and see which one is the correct one.
Now that's only if they are compatible with CM7/CM9. You might end up with FC's. If that happens, just delete your copy and rename the original again.

[Q] How do I Customise My MX Android TV Firmware (Zip.File)

Hi guys im a noob to the forums and to rom customisation in general so im hoping someone can help me.
I have a generic MX dual core, and have been supplied a flash firmware and image from the supplier. This image is basic and does not contain all of the repos that i want, nor the apps that I require.
The image supplied is a zipfile and contains:
factory_update_param.aml
hd18d_mx4.zip
recovery.img
I am able to successfully restore my box with this image (so I know that the image is working fine).
Within the hd18d_mx4.zip there is:
Directotories: data, META-INF, recovery, system
files: boot.img, bootloaded.img, logo.img
I can see the all the system APK files within the system/app folder. The problem is when i try to add another APK file into this directory within the archive (in this case videomix.apk), I am not able to restore the image to the MX device.
Can anyone help me with a noobies guide to do this. I have read that the apk file has to be signed, and the zip file has to be signed also?? But im not quite sure what this means, nor how I go about doing it.
Any help or tutorials will be much appreciate. I have downloaded the APK-multi-tool but dont have a clue what I need to do
Look forward to your replies.
P.S. Im using a windows 64 bit machine and not Linux (if that makes any difference).
I'm facing the same thing, did you end up having luck with this?
If not is there anyone that can assist?

Samsung Rom Marshmallow/Oreo - can I use different file types?

Ive been doing some reading on creating your own rom using samsung stock. What im wanting to do is use the system.img from marshmallow, and combine that with the rest from oreo (to get around the downgrade disable). Knox is already tripped i dont care about that...
both roms have the 5 tar.md5 files when extracted, AP, BL, CP, CSC and home CSC - however, to extract those once again, marshmallow contains regular disk image files, .img while oreo contains bin.lz4
Can I either, leave these different compression styles within the tar.md5 files, replacing the oreo system.bin.lz4 with the system.img from marshmallow, compress back into the tar.md5 and try flashing. Or, is there some clearcut way to convert either the bin.lz4 into .img , or the other way around? Has anyone done this before?
I was able to extract the bin.lz4 using diskinternals linux reader which produces a single file, simply labelled as "file" under the file type (windows 10). but what i cant figure out is if that is correct, and if so how to turn it into a regular .img file. the file sizes, between the bin.lz4 and the "file" ones are the same, which makes me suspect that this isnt correct. 7zip wont open the lz4 files at all.
Id love some advice from here. I know this is alot of work just to downgrade, but I am determined. Id love to figure this out! It would be my own personal way of saying "screw you" to samsung for locking things down so hard... also Im looking for that full touchwiz experience, for anyone whos about to suggest a custom rom. maybe its "chunky" but i love it.

Can we still do old school android custom rom style zips?

Im trying to make port a rom for my MI9 and I am having a hard time understanding the new android system of this system.new.dat thing. afte ra series of steps I got it extracted back to way system folder and made my edits but I cant get it back into a format that new androids can take (something along i cant generate a transfer list) the last time i made custom roms was back for android 2 & 4. I also tried making a img file (which worked) but its over 4gb so i cant get it in my phones storage and even if i do it complains about source is bigger then target. in all ways im stuck.
