Can an app install ROM in my phone by itself? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I dont know this is right place to ask.. but i have no expert to ask this..
I think hacking app was installed in my phone. i clicked an app that i dont know in phone and a message showed up from that app . so i click that message and right away my phone was turned off and then started rebooting.
And when i get my phone back, everything was reset just like a factory reset.
I am pretty scared worrying my phone was hacked. And i want to know the app just did factory reset or installed RoM.
Cause i never rooted my phone, but my phone turned out to be rooted.. (knox warranty is broken) The app rooted my phone.
Btw my phone was samsung galaxy note4 and the bootloader was unlocked in the first place. (Like the other old samsung phones)
Can an app do this(reset and install rom together) by just one-click?
I heard installing rom can be done without connecting to computer.
Please would you give me an answer..?
I am so worrying..

If the app has root access and the bootloader is unlocked...Potentially. The TWRP app does this - the user can select firmware to flash, and when the device reboots to TWRP, that firmware is then flashed.
Rootkit exploits typically don't last very long in Android. The best way to prevent this is 1) perform a clean install of the latest factory firmware, 2) lock your bootloader, and 3) only install trusted apps.

Without su permissions (root), an app cannot change anything other than its own data.
Even if a custom recovery is installed, an app would still require root to instruct TWRP to flash something.

If your bootloader IS unlocked and your phone IS rooted, any untrusted app can be malicious on your device.
They do not need TWRP to reset your device or flash a new ROM.
All they need is a bootloader unlocked device that is providing root privileges.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S3 "Modified" Issue

Hello mates,i'm having an issue with my device, and i was told to ask here for help, first things first,I'm sorry if i'm breaking any rules, because this is a massive site/forum organization and I think i'm posting in the right place/section.
Okay, here's my issue, recently i've purchased a Samsung Galaxy S3 from some dude, and recently,i've decided to update it to 4.1.2 as i believe it is the official Samsung update. However, the previous owner seem to have done something to it and it says that it can't be updated because the status of the device is now modified. I've looked it up on youtube, and successfully "unrooted" it. After that i've restored the phone to it's factory settings, removing all my pictures, music and all data in general. However my device's condition remains Modified and unable to update. I was just wondering, how do i do that, without risking to break the device. Again,i don't care about the data on the device(none left) and I only want the official stuff from Samsung that is supposed to be safe. I apreciate any info on this matter and ask you to use simple words as i'm not a pro when it comes to phone software/os. Ty
i have nearly the same problem

The modified status is removed using an app "Triangle Away" BEFORE unrooting. Did the video mention that?

No,just "SuperSU" for unrooting. Is your "Triangle Away" Safe?
Edit: After fully understanding your comment, what am i suppose to do now? Root it again, then use Triangle then unroot it? If it is of any meaning,I also have this "CWM" Icon that stayed after factory reset, and i've had it since i bought the phone,it looks like a settings button, but doesn't really fit in the other icons, full name is CWM Manager and i believe i was able to open it,but now says. "CWM Manager needs SuperUser access to function ! If you have SU Installed ,make sure CWM Manager is not blocked, then reboot and try again", i have SuperUserSU but when i try to open it is says "There is no SU binary installed and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem" Both of these apps worked before the unroot so i'm thinking it's connected somehow. Noteon't need these 2 apps to work.just want android update

Well to get a fully Stock phone you can Root it, use Triangle Away like rootSU suggested to get the official Status back (also check Download mode), then Just flash a Stock Samsung Firmware via Odin. This will unroot your device since you are flashing the Stock Kernel with the Firmware. Afterwards you should have a unrooted Stock device with an official Status. Odin will also automatically Wipe your device`s Apps + Data.

Okay mate,i was afraid i was gonna destroy my device, but i overcame that fear, and watched a tutorial on youtube on how to root your device,it had 96% positive feedback (based on likes) and i felt confident. But when i entered the odin mode on my device, shortly after the begining a problem occured. Do you know that orange box that is suppose to appear in Odin on your desktop? The one that says COM5 or something? Well,I didn't get that,it was just an empty white box like the other 4-5 boxes next to it. Apreciate answers

Well that could be a indication that you either don`t have the USB Drivers installed or that USB Debugging isn`t turned on on your device.
Do you have the latest version of Kies installed?
Turn on USB Debugging on your device if it`s turned off and try again.

The FreeGee app will unlock your bootloader along with disable security check. Then you can delete any app you want to.

You can just root the stock ROM and from there install something like titanium backup (free) to remove the AT&T bloatware.
Unlocking the bootloader afterwards using FreeGee is optional. But I've come across a thread saying that if you root but don't unlock the bootloader and try to do a factory reset, it'll become softbricked until you use Teenybin to restore, so caution there before doing factory reset. Otherwise, root works just fine.
I rooted + unlocked my device yesterday after receiving it in the mail. I was on 4.1.2 JellyBean and FreeGee gave me a ton of warnings but I took a gamble and it paid off. Got bootloader and security check disabled and Sk8's CWM installed.
EDIT: Go to step #4 of the link to see which apps can be safely removed.
I froze all the bloatware (at&t and LG Bloatware.) I rooted and use FreeGee to unlock the bootloader. No security error. I did get a security error the first time though because i didn't use the bootloader and didn't know this could happen (the first day i got the phone.) It's really easy to unbrick it though. Just put it in download mode and use LGNPST.

It doesn't take a factory reset to get security error, a reboot or powering phone off then on will cause it.

We really seem to have failed in helping people to understand this, as Towelroot users are now bricking phones right and left by people who root bootloader locked phones then use Goo Manager and the like to try to flash custom recovery and fail.
If your bootloader is locked, you can't flash custom recovery or custom kernel. It doesn't matter if you're rooted or not.
"CUSTOM" Software
Does anyone know if the triggers the "Custom" and the unlocked padlock when rebooting?

It DOES trigger the Custom padlock. With root access you can install Xposed Framework and one of modules allows you to reset that back to Original boot screen.
I think triangle away will work also. I haven't tried yet, but removed the custom screen with the mk2 build after that was rooted with saferoot.

If it really happened out of the blue, without installing or reconfiguring anything, your issue will probably be fixed with a power cycle. I would try a battery pull, holding down the power button for a couple seconds without the battery in place (to drain remnants of electricity), replace the battery, boot, reboot, soft/hotboot. If that doesn't fix it, you must have done something to stop it from functioning in the first place.
Yes that also happened to me.. Not sure if it was related to towel root or something I froze. I unfroze everything and uninstalled towel root still had issue..ended up reinstalling oem firmware and everything works normal now. Wondering if the samsung servers know the phone is rooted and refuse connection?

Doubtful; people saying "Hi Galaxy" is free advertising for them. If it occured after freezing tasks I'm sure that was the source of the problem. Must be SELinux related. Next time, just redo your root; you probably didn't need to forfeit data.
I unfroze everything and it was hit and miss if it connected or not. Reinstalled android problem was gone. Just thought I would offer my experience on this..
On NC5 it was the fastest and easiest root ever.
One of my phone's is a Galaxy S3 using NE1 and since i couldn't unlock the bootloader but, i had successfully rooted it using towelroot.
It has been about 6 months and i never had issues.
Not everyone with a matching phone has the same issues when it comes to Rooting as well as Bootloader Unlocking.
One's bad experience doesn't always mean another will have the same. This all depends on the expertise and know-how of the user as well as the reliability of an individual who provides the information and/or files accomplishing a Root and/or Bootloader Unlocking.
Just my opinion :fingers-crossed:

[Q] Removing Root to do OTA Lolipop?

As per the title, I read something somewhere to the effect that from here on out, OTA updates will fail on most phones if they have been rooted, and this seems to be true for the Z Ultra GPE. So, what changed when I rooted my phone, and how do I undo it so that I can do the OTA update? I have looked through the forum, but nobody seems to answer it. I am rooted with Supersu using the Towelroot method. I am hoping to not have to unlock the bootloader or anything, just want to do this the official way. (I did backup my TA partition though).

If your GPe is rooted only, the OTA should install just fine. If you made any system changes, you'll need to revert those though. I ran the OTA while I was rooted and didn't have any problems.

Not so. See:

well at the moment that doesn't effect the GPe, and may never. There will have to be a system image flashed to put the block device in a known state before the new way could ever be used, and if there is a system.img we can always flash that to get the OTA to work... no big deal I don't think.

First of all, BGR is a garbage site, and I wouldn't believe anything they say, ever. Second, that article is talking about avoiding root AFTER Lollipop is installed.
Having root will not cause the OTA to fail. If your OTA is failing, it's because you made a system change on your device.
*edit
If you were using Xposed, then that is more than likely why your OTA is failing.
What is Xposed? How would I check to see if it has affected my device? Only thing I did was Towelroot and running SuperSU. I may have done something to allow writing to the external SD card, but forget how I did that. I was intentionally trying to keep this phone basically stock so that it would easily update to Lolipop. I did a Titanium backup to the externalSD card and reset it to factory and the OTA update still fails though. I assume this was due to the fact that I rooted it. The bootloader is still unmodified, secureboot is still green - yes, lock state is locked. Only other thing I can think of is I installed an app that allowed me to set permissions by app (turn off location settings by app, etc) Sorry I can't give any more details than that...

If you can't figure out what system change you made to your phone, just factory reset it, and run the OTA again. There was multiple people(me included) that took the OTA successfully, our phones were rooted and SuperSU was installed.

As mentioned before, I factory reset this and wiped the cache from the stock recovery mode. Update won't take, stops shortly after it fails with "system update error". Since my last reset (been done a few times) it won't prompt me to get the OTA update, after my last reset last night. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

The only fail-safe way I can see is to:
root
back up TA
unlock BL
hotboot custom kernel with recovery
flash 4.4.2
OTA to 4.4.3
OTA to 4.4.4
root and restore TA if you want a working camera
OTA to 5.0

As often happens, I sometimes see a solution I don't care to implement and begin to procrastinate. So, haven't looked at this problem for a while. I may have found the solution to my problems, but want to know if anyone has experience with it before proceeding. I re-installed superSU and went through the options. Buried in the options list is a box that offers "Full unroot, Cleanup for permanent unroot". What happens when I do this? does it just remove superSU or does it restore the phone back to factory status, before it was rooted? Thanks!
PS: @ blueether the solution is fine and I am sure it would work (I was going to go ahead with it until I saw that option in superSU), but have been hesitant to unlock the bootloader, etc, due to my unfamiliarity with hacking Sony products, and only want to do it as a last, final, no other option solution. Thanks for your help!

That's fine and I take no offence at you not wanting to unlock the BL.
I haven't tried the full unroot option in supersu so I'm not sure what the outcome is. One of the other GPe users care to comment?
Well, turns out that the solution to unrooting the phone is to install superSU and than look inthe settings. It will offer you an option to completely uninstall root. It did what it says, and than you can check it with a check root app from the market. It reports that the phone is not rooted. Now the question is, will it pick up the OTA update... No luck with that after a clean factory reset, so not sure what to do next.
2 questions: If I unrooted my phone, and it says it is unrooted, is this true, in the fullest extent? Does towelroot do anything more than adding some permissions ans the superuser file?
If the phone won't pick up the OTA update, why? What went wrong?
Thanks!

It sounds like the OTA is not being pushed at the moment/anymore. You could copy it to there the recovery can see it and manually install it

How to remove SuperSU without root?

Hi,
I bought a Nexus 5 on amazon, and when it came in, it went through the setup process as if it were a brand new phone. However, as soon as it got to the home page, i noticed that SuperSU was installed, and it was in the app drawer. I did not want a rooted phone, so i installed root checker to see if the phone was rooted. Root checker said it was not rooted, so i thought i was safe to uninstall superSU. But when I launch superSU, it gives me a popup that says that there is no supersu binary installed or something, and i can't access the app further than that. Is there any way to uninstall it otherwise? I also went to the play store to uninstall it but it just says that it will uninstall all updates. Also, if i install marshmallow, will that fix the problem? i heard that the OTA update for M will remove root, supersu, etc.
thanks

yes, it is listed there, and when i click on it, it gives me options to force stop it, uninstall updates, or disable it. But i heard that if i try to install OTA updates on the phone, it will stop halfway cause the updates now check for stuff like supersu

If there is no option to uninstall, it is on the system partition, you will need to root to remove it, or better reinstall stock firmware.
the devices was rooted at some time and it was not unrooted correctly, I would not allow the device to update ota, because you just do not know if stock rom is complete.

I have decided to give back the phone, I really don't want that kinda risky device on me for the next 2 years... however, will i be able to factory reset it before i send it back? or will the phone mess up? (when i initially got the phone, i THINK it was factory reset because i had to go through the default android setup process) i just don't want the next owner to gain any of my information or anything even if i delete everything i have on it so far and disconnect my google account
