I'm trying to restore my Froyo app backups, i.e. Email 2.2.2, News 2.2.2, etc with Titanium Backup but have encountered a problem. They won't restore! The only reason I want to restore them is I'm under the impression when I update to Gingerbread (once it's avaiable on Bell) it won't let me update since I don't have some core apps installed. Please help!
The icon in the right of those apps, is an explanation mark in a triangle?
No it's actually a red happy face.
It's just Email 2.2.2, Weather 2.2.2 and News 2.2.2 that I backed up and un-installed. Now when I try and restore just those 3 the restore pop up screen goes on forever. Do I even need to reinstall these in order to update to Gingerbread successfully? Thanks.
Sorry for bumping, but I'm a little worried I won't be able to update to Gingerbread when the time comes...
Hmmm...
The think you can do is, ask for another Bell user here, upload the 3 apks you want, and
using Root Explorer or any other exlporer with root access,
or adb using your computer
move these apps to system/app
You unistalled them because they were bloatware, right?
You shouldn't unistall them. You should freeze them, and now restore them back.
But, what i suggest is:
Unlock your Bootloader,
install the Unlocked CWM
and download and install(using cwm zips) an International Version of 2.3.4 from now.
But READ very carefully the android dev section, so you wont get hard-brick!
If i helped, hit thanks!
I suggest back up your data and what not and flash a fresh stock build (either fruit cake or sbf)
Yeah I thought they were bloatware so I uninstalled them. I'll freeze next time. Can I just "Factory Data reset" after backing up all my essential apps? I really don't understand the process of flashing and updating to Gingerbread and whatnot and I'm a little scared to brick my phone too.

The only thing you have to afraid, is some SBF's, when you unlock you bootloader..(If the dont remove some code of Bootloader, in SBF's, and then you downgrade from 2.3 to 2.2, you get hard-brick!)
So, i suggest you, instead of waiting the 3 apk's,
wait for a more stable and international support for a rom(like, i m waiting Alien Rom),
and then flash it using CWM..
If you read here, you can easily unlock your Bootloader, but this can void your guarantee.
Since you are unlocked, then never use RDS lite, to flash SBF's, and flash roms in CWM which is easy and safe!
I' m not pushing you. Just recommending!
My guarantee is already voided, since i m since unlocked, and the half-earth away from USA
So unlocking my phone is the only risky part? And after I unlock my phone I should never update with the official releases again? Also, unlocking my phone only gives me the ability to flash roms, kernels etc in the future when a more stable Bell 2.34 rom comes out, it doesn't change anything with my phone as is right now except I void my warranty? Basically unlocking doesn't give me Gingerbread or anything for that matter, it only allows me to install it afterwards? You can probably tell I'm very new to all this so thank you for being so patient and helpful.
ok, so im not a total newb when it comes to rooting but here is my question(s).
recently got the jellybean update on my t-mobile l9 and was wondering the simplest way to root it?
do i have to unlock the boot loader to root it??
all i really want to do is be able to remove some of the t-mobile bloatware.
please and thank you to all who help.
also ive briefly glanced at Lelus root/offline flashing method, is all that work needed to simply root the device??
if so, could someone link me to the EXACT files i would need, not the "look in this thread for your version"
(if i break the wifes phone, or lose here saved games, she will kick my butt lol)
my device is the following
tmobile
lg l9
p76920d
android version 4.1.2
I second this motion! And no one mentioned is the lelus root method will work with V20D
Sent from my LG-P769 using xda app-developers app
Lol, yes all of that is needed to root the device and as of right now, you have to have root before upgrading to jelly bean. So if you really wanted to root her device. you would have to flash 10g (ice cream) for her device (p769).
If all you want is to disable some bloatware trying going to apps in system setting and see if you can disable it.

You would need to downgrade to V10G using the Lelus method (which isnt hard at all just follow the directions carefully) and then root the phone. After that you could update to a rooted version of V20D ad then you would be set.Everything you need is in the Development forum.
i agree with grey use the V10G Method then use the CWM BackUp with radio flash through CWM Recovery by artas182x always remember to make a backup of data from your backup app and as well backup your sd card to the computer and please give thanks to the devs they have helped us alot in this development section and they deserve the credit if i have helped you can always give me thanks but the real credit goes to the devs and people that help our glorious community

Just install voodoo OTA rootkeeper and open and press protect root. After that you can safely take OTA. Also if OTA fails you're not bricked, pull battery and it will boot back into ICS. The reason we can't directly root 20D is because we don't yet have the KDZ file from LG.

Then you have 2 options to go from here (or 3? I guess). Either use the offline flasher to flash 10g again(use the lelus root method so you don't lose root.) this should make everything default and OTA should go thru. Afterwards don't forget to do voodoo again. Or install CWM and update with one of the clean rooted backups available. @artas182x CWM for locked bootloader works great. I know you said you don't wanna mess around with CWM but there is very little risk involved, just be sure to backup your current rom first. If you backup all your apps and app data in titanium beforehand you can restore them back to the clean JB after all is said and done. I'd personally go the CWM route as it is much faster.

i'm on 10g rooted with voodoo now. Flash 10g again?
CWM i didn't install because wasn't sure if 100% working or still buggy for p769. CWM is a better option. Backup is not critical. I had trouble restoring with titanium before so i don't mind reinstalling apps. Updating to JB is not critical either unless it brings some improvement in speed/ram management. Update notification was incessantly bugging me every 5 minutes that's why i wanted to get rid of it but its no longer a problem. Disappeared. Will i be able to CWM a rooted/unlocked bl JB for p769 eventually or should i do the rooted JB now and wait until bl can be unlocked in the future? Or, possibly new rooted unlocked bl roms in the future?
Hello,
I have an LG Optimus L9 and I'm on Ice Cream Sandwich right now, the stock firmware that was there when I bought the phone. Now what I want to do, is backup the current ROM in its full state, then upgrade to Jelly Bean via the OTA updater from LG.
Then I want to return to my previously backed up ROM whenever I'll want to, and get the same state of ICS that I had before upgrading.
Is it even possible? I don't mind if I have to root it.
Thanks in advance.
Everything you mentioned is possible, but there's still trade-offs:
1) if you want EVERYTHING to be the same as now (ICS), including radio, u-boot, and x-boot, then you can always using fastboot to flash the u-boot, and x-boot, and then using offline flashing KDZ to restore STOCK ICS (with root) and then use ClockworkMod ROM Manager to Recovery your current backup;
2) I personally don't see the need for you to have radio, u-boot, and x-boot to come back to it's current state: JB radio, u/x-boot works fine with ICS ROM. So the simple thing to do for you is:
a) ROOT your current ICS
b) install ClockworkMod ROM Manager
c) backup (using CWM)
d) update to JB (keep root and CWM)
e) restore the backup from step c whenever you prefer

Yeah, I guess if keeping it in the same state is too complicated, restoring to the factory ICS would be fine too.
I'm still wondering though, if I do your process mentioned at step 2 above, will I get my bootloader unlocked? I'm a newbie in that kind of stuff, but I've seen articles mentioning something, that you can only unlock the bootloader when being on Jelly Bean.
Thanks again.
Voodoo rootkeeper is needed for you to retain root via ota. Or you can riot again if it's no problem.

It's possible but rooting L9 ICS is not an easy one-click process. If you want to try, take a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2173465.
For what you want to do you should
1. Try to offline flash your current stock rom first. This make sure that you familair with offline flash and you can flash stock rom back if rooting process go wrong. Refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2085344
This process don't delete your data if you do it right.
2. Get modified .bin file for your rom if any. If there're no modified .bin for your rom, you must make one. It require editing binary file with hex editor. There're some thread about this somewhere in the forum.
3. Root your phone with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2173465. Almost same process as offline flash but you need to add some stuff to your phone and replace some files while flashing kdz.

No you won't get your bootloader unlocked. It is true that only official P760 JB supports bootloader-unlocking, but that is an option, not a necessity (which you can deal later if you want to).
Also artit is right that ROOT ICS is not one-click process. I followed cmahendra's excellent tutorial and get things done on first try, but things differ for different person.
Root for JB
If you don't want to do the complicated root method for ICS then just wait until you upgrade to jelly bean and then go here. ICS was a bit difficult to root but once you do it then you can get it done with your eyes closed. Cmahendra has a great tutorial along with Lelus method it's great! Good luck!!

Yeah, I guess it's not that hard, I'll try to do it. It's similar to the method for flashing an LG KM900 which I had before (non Android). I'll try it and report here.
I hope I can find a KDZ matching by current firmware, though.

Okay, so I managed to root ICS and install the recovery then backup my firmware.
Although when I installed the Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and made a temporary unroot, I immediately went to the Software Update option on my phone. It downloaded the update and rebooted. Then soon after a while I got an error "Err:0x13e", then it rebooted back into Android and said something like "unexpected error occured while upgrading" (not precise message).
I'm stuck at this point. What should I do now? Has anyone experienced this before?
Thanks.
So are you saying your phone is dead or what? Did it reboot and die? More details please. And you weren't suppose to make a temp unroot, you were suppose to protect root.

No, it's not dead. It throws an error "Err:0x13e" during the "Upgrading Firmware" stage, then it fails and reboots back to Android.
I tried everything in Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, it still didn't work.

The reason i't snot working is because of the custom recovery. you have to delete cwm so that the upgrade can boot to original recovery and upgrade your phone. Be sure to get into Voodoo and protect root. That will be important after you upgrade.
After the upgrade go into google play and install Voodoo then recover root.

Thanks, I see now. Though I decided to flash a Jelly Bean KDZ instead, then do a factory restore. Both my root and CWM were gone, so I rooted again using the LGPwn method, which worked just fine. Afterwards, I installed the same recovery I had on ICS, and now everything is working fine.
I guess I don't have any more questions regarding my topic.
As per the title, I read something somewhere to the effect that from here on out, OTA updates will fail on most phones if they have been rooted, and this seems to be true for the Z Ultra GPE. So, what changed when I rooted my phone, and how do I undo it so that I can do the OTA update? I have looked through the forum, but nobody seems to answer it. I am rooted with Supersu using the Towelroot method. I am hoping to not have to unlock the bootloader or anything, just want to do this the official way. (I did backup my TA partition though).

If your GPe is rooted only, the OTA should install just fine. If you made any system changes, you'll need to revert those though. I ran the OTA while I was rooted and didn't have any problems.

Not so. See:

well at the moment that doesn't effect the GPe, and may never. There will have to be a system image flashed to put the block device in a known state before the new way could ever be used, and if there is a system.img we can always flash that to get the OTA to work... no big deal I don't think.

If you were using Xposed, then that is more than likely why your OTA is failing.
What is Xposed? How would I check to see if it has affected my device? Only thing I did was Towelroot and running SuperSU. I may have done something to allow writing to the external SD card, but forget how I did that. I was intentionally trying to keep this phone basically stock so that it would easily update to Lolipop. I did a Titanium backup to the externalSD card and reset it to factory and the OTA update still fails though. I assume this was due to the fact that I rooted it. The bootloader is still unmodified, secureboot is still green - yes, lock state is locked. Only other thing I can think of is I installed an app that allowed me to set permissions by app (turn off location settings by app, etc) Sorry I can't give any more details than that...

As mentioned before, I factory reset this and wiped the cache from the stock recovery mode. Update won't take, stops shortly after it fails with "system update error". As often happens, I sometimes see a solution I don't care to implement and begin to procrastinate. So, haven't looked at this problem for a while. I may have found the solution to my problems, but want to know if anyone has experience with it before proceeding. I re-installed superSU and went through the options. Buried in the options list is a box that offers "Full unroot, Cleanup for permanent unroot". What happens when I do this? does it just remove superSU or does it restore the phone back to factory status, before it was rooted? Thanks!
PS: @ blueether the solution is fine and I am sure it would work (I was going to go ahead with it until I saw that option in superSU), but have been hesitant to unlock the bootloader, etc, due to my unfamiliarity with hacking Sony products, and only want to do it as a last, final, no other option solution. Thanks for your help!

That's fine and I take no offence at you not wanting to unlock the BL.
I haven't tried the full unroot option in supersu so I'm not sure what the outcome is. One of the other GPe users care to comment?
Well, turns out that the solution to unrooting the phone is to install superSU and than look inthe settings. It will offer you an option to completely uninstall root. It did what it says, and than you can check it with a check root app from the market. It reports that the phone is not rooted. Now the question is, will it pick up the OTA update... No luck with that after a clean factory reset, so not sure what to do next.
2 questions: If I unrooted my phone, and it says it is unrooted, is this true, in the fullest extent? Does towelroot do anything more than adding some permissions ans the superuser file?
If the phone won't pick up the OTA update, why? What went wrong?
Thanks!

It sounds like the OTA is not being pushed at the moment/anymore. You could copy it to there the recovery can see it and manually install it

Your post is two years ago but i think you can help me,there is a new update for my phone and i am rooted i also have xposed installed so this mean i cannot update my sytem? Do i need to uninstall xposed? Im on stock rom and with TWRP recovery it would be a big help if you reply thanks.
Also, since it was previously rooted, can I immediately get to installing the OTA updates/most recent At&t updates for my device? Will they even be there? If not, can anyone leave me a link and explain how to do so after I finish the unrooting process? Thank you.
Also, I just found the rom page on HTC, and I think this is correct. I'm still on 4.4.2 anyways That, or 4.2.2 Not quite sure. Is it possible for me to just download this from the website? If that's the case, then I won't unroot it. My only gripe is that I can't uninstall anything on my phone even though it's rooted. When I restart, the app still remains. This is only with stock apps, of course. Anyways, with the HTC rom, if I have to flash this or something, etc., I'd need this to be explained.
Edit: I did find a youtube video in which I can get OTA updates on my phone, but it says that I need to have a twrp custom recovery. All I really did was root my phone and I have the super su app.
You need to relock the boot loader and then select unroot in super su options. You will also need to flash stock recovery if you want to receive OTAs.
This shouldn't delete any data.
I would recommend going s-off and flashing dev edition Rom. Quicker updates and no bloatware to deal with. Worked great for me.
Before doing so, just copy your contacts and messages to ext SD card. Reinstalling your apps isn't too much of an inconvenience considering you get out from under AT&T restrictions.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 in a van down by the river.

Relocking the bootloader typically wipes data and renders the phone unbootable (expect the RUU).
Also, it seems like you are suggesting the method or return to stock for OTAs. In that case, relocking the bootloader is not necessary. Relocking the bootloader is only required to RUU (not for OTA).

Also, since it was previously rooted, can I immediately get to installing the OTA updates/most recent At&t updates for my device? Will they even be there? If not, can anyone leave me a link and explain how to do so after I finish the unrooting process? Thank you.

For OTA, you need stock ROM (nothing modified in system partition - but from your subsequent statement it sounds like you were never able to, anyway) and stock recovery.
From there, and also as long as you are on AT&T's network, you should be able to get OTA updates. Root is okay (does not prevent OTA updates in itself). Unlocked bootloader is also ok.
You should be able to return to stock and OTA update without losing your data. However, you should always be backing up your data (and be able to restore it accordingly), if its that important to you. Your data is never guaranteed to be safe, even with normal day to day usage (much less OTA updates or rooting) and you should backup to avoid regret.

My only gripe is that I can't uninstall anything on my phone even though it's rooted. When I restart, the app still remains. This is only with stock apps, of course. Anyways, with the HTC rom, if I have to flash this or something, etc., I'd need this to be explained.

Could have easily searched these forums for that answer. System partition (where the stock apps are stored) on this phone is write protected. Even with root, you need to install a kernel mod to disable write protection.

If you didn't install custom recovery, how did you root?

I probably won't unroot if I can try to get ota updates. How can I check what recovery I have installed? I downloaded flashify and backed up the current kernel through my drop box, so I'm not sure if that did a damned thing.
