How do I root this phone so I can use pihole? I'm sick of all the ads...

Here's all you need to unlock bootloader and root Nord 2!

Another option is to use private dns in settings to block ads. Change private dns to dns.adguard.com

Thank you but it's a little too much. Is there an easier way like an app or something?

Nope, no app to root Nord 2 but here is a video guide at least
If your only reason to root is to block ads, try private dns instead!
If you have any questions regarding Nord 2, check out the telegram group:https://t.me/OnePlusNord2GlobalOfficial

Private DNS?

I thought all I had to do was enable developer options then turn on debugging mode. I did that too and still nothing.

Never mind I got it going thank you all!

** Release 4.0 Notes **

It is an xposed module capable of spoofing some of the identities of an Android device.
Customise the identities to your own choices!
Download Free version : http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.intplus.freehijack
Download Premium version : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.intplus.hijackid
https://youtu.be/8k9OgoB0Ay8
Below are the supported identities :
- Android Id
- Serial Number
- IMEI
- MAC address
- Device build number
- Kernel version string
Another interesting option available is, ability to randomize the identity for different processes.
It just hijacks the identities on the fly. Hence the original valules are not modified.
Once the app is disabled, get back all the original ids.
How to use!
You need to have an android device which is rooted and has Xposed framework installed.
Open Hijack Suite and enter custom values for the identities.
Press save.
Goto Xposed installer app.
Enable 'Hijack suite'
Reboot the device.
View the customized values being replaced at places where they are tried to fetch.(Check using different apps.)
Observe the behaviour of the app under test by changing the id values.

Hey man, great idea!
Would it be possible to also spoof the kernel version string?

Hi,
Glad you liked it.
I think it should be possible too. Let me learn a little bit on that...
Thanks!
Brilliant
So this is like xprivacy or PMP?

Hi Antieco,
Checked these 2 apps. They are wonderful apps for personal privacy management.
I just imagined Hijack Suite as a security testing tool and developed it.
Concentrated on spoofing the device identities to apps instead of preventing access to them.
Yes, it can be treated like xprivacy or PMP.
But when you approach mine as a privacy tool, I think xprivacy and PMP are doing much better.
Also they have a lot of other features.

Does the app makes a backup from original IMEI, MAC address, Device build number, and is it restorable.
Some reports from other similar apps that they couldnt restore default data

It sounds like a good feature, I should add.
As of now, you can revert back to original identities by disabling this module within xposed installer app.
Note : You will need a reboot once, after the module is disabled.
I could have really used this module last year for a little project I did. I wound up decompling an APK to do what I wanted. I'd suggest adding phone number as another ID value. Would be very valuable in my opinion.

Don't wanna be rude, but is there any way to get the premium version for free? I'm kinda limited. But I can offer my services as an app tester.

A short question:
When you go to Turkey and use a Turkish SIM card, your phone will be blocked after 6 or 7 weeks. They do that so that you can't import phones.
Only way to use it again is to activate the IMEI somewhere, but you need a Turkish passport and pay money to do so.
Since I'm often going to Turkey I always have to search for other smartphone (taking one from my family or friends).
May it be possible that they can't block the phone when using the app? Or is it only useful for installed apps?
I have a very old Nokia phone which is active, I may be able to use the IMEI of it.
bought pro version, didn't change anything on my phone n910c with stock ROM Android M and H Vitamin Kernel

Hi,
It will spoof the IMEI number to other apps only or the programs that take OS help to get the identity.
Network providers will be able to collect original number using their own channel.

Issues with VPN ad blockers

On the Mate 10 ALP-L29 with firmware 8.0.0.115 (C636)
Having significant issues with NetGuard or Adguard for blocking ads - the internet connection is spotty and hangs up often when the VPN is in place. Happens across all apps that need a connection.
Refreshing multiple times sometimes makes the connection work. Then the connection will work for a while before going on the fritz again.
Wifi/4g will stay connected but no data flowing in.
Once I disconnect the VPN then it will work fine without interruptions.
Anyone having the same issue? Not sure if this is a Mate 10 specific issue or an Oreo issue.

Oh wow I don't see any more ads on chrome using dns66 I downloaded it on F-droid app. Thanks
Does anyone here know how to get DNS 666 working in conjunction with a VPN running in the background. I need a VPN to be running for my job and I also want to be able to block ads. And I know DNS 666 uses a VPN workaround to be able to function correctly on non-rooted devices. So has anyone been able to get DNS 666 working in conjunction with a third-party VPN?

I don't think it's possible. All other VPN ad blockers go off when I connect to my proper VPN provider. You can only have one key symbol on your notification bar.
DNS66 is probably a little better than the other VPN ad blockers in that my connection is less interrupted but it's still occasionally not working and when it doesn't work I still need to refresh multiple times to get the connection going.
No one else has this issue?

Yeah, AFAIK, we can only get one VPN working at one time,
And i never found a true perfrct vpn bases ad blocking, dns66 is one of the best i can suggest,
But if you really need full solution for your ads and vpn, then i would suggest to go rooting,
I already rooted my mate 10, so i can use adaway tigether with my tigervpn.

Uh, ermm...
About that,
How about trying it by yourself
download attached .xml file and place it to /system/vendor/etc
change permissions to 644
What changed ?
BETA : Try to balance the volume gain between earpiece and main speaker. Currently i adjust it to have around 4dB extra gain.
Crap, missed the attachment

@otonieru, please could you tell me, after rooting, do you still receive OTA updates on your mate 10?
I'm highly interested in rooting, but up to now there's so little information on rooting available.
I also wonder if there will be TWRP for the mate 10...

OTA still received. But you will lost your root if you decide to flash the update.
And rooting will erase your userdata
But using huawei backup tool, it can easily restored
@otonieru i have downloaded the files for rooting the device but before i proceed any further do i need to have the credits at funky huawei? Or i can just proceed without it? Just in case i have open up the wrong file. Can u tell me which file u used for rooting? Because i don't see a superuser file in the folder. Some extra guidance would help a lot. First time rooting a non samsung phone. Thanks in advance
AdGuard works fine with me. I am unrooted. DNS66 didn't work well with me. Ad boxes still showing.

No need credit for rooting. It only needed to rebrand.
Choose something named "FunkyHuawei..." its a .bat file if am not mistaken (curently far away from my PC)
It will open CMD windows, and there wouldnbe a list of option you can choose. Choose "Root"
Plug your phone in fastboot mode. (Use Win7, Win 10 has problem with mate 10 fastboot driver)
Has anyone found the solution for this annoying problem? It happens with all VPN connections (I'm using NordVPN at the moment).

Why not just block access at the Router/Modem level? Most of them come with parental controls these days and allow blocking from there per device.
Unless you've tried that.

I have no experience to modify Router settings, will search about it how to use it's parental control feature. I found the idea while searching for it and found this way to silently block youtube and this kind of sites for my daughter's tab. do not want to use any applock like app which i have tried

Thank you for your answer. I sent an email to customer service, and they sent me a public account number and password and with that I was able to sign in. The only thing is that you have to be very careful to don't put any personal information into to the VivoCloud because that is a public account. But at least I can install third party APK now.

we need development for this phone but no one is willing to do it
I would also like for a custom or a stock ROM of this phone, Vivo X21 Plus. Was able to unlock bootloader, but there are too many mal-ware apps that can't be disabled by normal means and i'm sick of all the ads and apps that are auto-installed (assume through iogs or FotaProvider) and need to be purged. Was able to disallow most system apps from doing much, but the mal-ware apps keep showing up from time to time and like to revert background to original wallpaper background, which is VERY annoying!
Any help or pointing towards a stock ROM would be greatly appreciated!
