So I have had my Galaxy Tab S7 (non +) for a while now, and overall, am very happy with it. I have only one problem, using a Linux machine for work and wanting to VNC to it, to use my tablet as a second screen (with an Headless-Ghost-Display aka dummy HDMI plug).
Regardless of my specific use case, any VNC connection that I try to establish over TCP/UDP, using my Galaxy Tab S7 as the client, behaves VERY oddly. First, it will work for like 1-10 seconds, then the connection cuts out and the VNC screen freezes on the tablet (not the actual tab hardware freezes, really just the VNC image), while logs on Host and Client still act like the connection is just fine. Only when disconnecting the frozen VNC session from the Tab Client, does the Host SOMETIMES detect that the connection is lost (sometimes, the host still doesn't realize it until I shut the vnc server down by force).
And even weirder, it then, 9/10 times, completely messes with the hosts Wi-Fi connection, and makes it unable to reach any sites before resetting the Wi-Fi connection.
The issue does NOT seem to be the host computer, as it happens with other LINUX hosts as well (oddly, any remote connection from the Tab to Windows works just fine).
The issue is NOT with any specific VNC client I use, as I tried A LOT and it happens on all of them. (oh, and I also tried many VNC servers, including NoMachine with it's own NX protocol, same story)
The issue also does not seem to be with my network, since connecting to the same host laptop, or any other VNC host using any other client device on the same network, works just fine.
The issue seems to be something specific to VCN connections that happens on the Galaxy Tab S7. And only going over TCP/UDP. Using a ADB reverse connection to have a wired VNC connection with the Tab S7 works just fine (be it kinda slow and sluggish sometimes).
This is as far as I can manage to track the problem down, since, as described above, any log of any host or client doesn't really give any usable error messages and just acts like everything is fine until the connection is forced shut. After a lot of digging, I found few others who did report a similar problem, but no one had any solution.
My only guess at this point, is that the KNOX security Samsung built in has some kind of problem with it? And as far as I know, on the Galaxy Tab S7, that's built into a hardware ship?
Maybe someone here has a neat idea? This is kinda frustrating and baffling to me :O

as it shows on the title,is it possible to connect my android based device to my PC via wifi hotspot and control it from my phone, its like teamviewer but without having to connect to the internet ,i.e the connection would be between the pc and cellphone directly.
i hope my point is clear.
Sometime like RDP will work over a LAN, but having never used a wifi hotspot I'm not exactly sure if the connection would be correct. Connected to the same router a phone would be able to use RDP to connect to the local IP (usually 192.168.x.x) without ever going through the internet.
If I tether my Droid 3 and the Windows 7 laptop with bluetooth this method works with any app that supports Microsoft RDP. You would also need to be using a Windows version with RDP host support to get this to work.
thanks for your reply
I'm looking for a remote desktop app for the Android that uses (or is able to use) a bluetooth connection to connect. Or if that's not possible, a local wifi connection, ie: direct from my droid to my computer's wireless card, using only my local area connection.
Does anyone know an app that will do this?
It needs to give me the full screen of my computer, so nothing like Gmote or any remotes used for media centers will work for this project. I'd also like it to keep my screen on the computer while I use it, instead of locking it up.
Basically PhonemyPC but without having to use the internet to do so.
My reasons? I'm trying to connect to and control my Carputer running Centrafuse in my Eclipse. So that I can leave the car running, go outside of it, and pull up the full screen to push buttons and control the car's media center (and more) or even from the back seat. You know.. for the ladies Without having to send every command over 3g to verizon's servers, back out to a tower, and back into my carputer, slowing things waaay down. Thanks!
Well you could use Microsoft RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) if your carputer is running Windows XP Pro or 7 Pro/Ultimate. Bluetooth support is better on Windows 7 as it has a newer stack. RDP host functionality is not included in home edition versions of Windows. The biggest advantage of Microsoft RDP is it doesn't require any extra software on the Windows host and is relatively easy to connect to. For the Android device, just search the market for your any remote desktop program that supports RDP. A disadvantage to RDP is that it sends the host system back to the Windows login screen when a remote session starts. This is a security feature so others can't see what you are doing and I don't think it can be disabled.
You could also try VNC, its similar to RDP and will work on other OSes, home versions of Windows, Linux, etc.
Either bluetooth or wifi tether (which is basically ad-hoc) should work. If the computer can surf the internet from the phone then it must be getting a local IP assigned.
Thanks for your suggestion.
However, this doesn't seem to apply yo what I need as A. It's for a mac (I have a PC) B. it doesn't seem to be an actual live streaming remote PC type of program, more like a monitoring program that sends you screenshots and data every few minutes, and finally.. from what I can tell their app is for ipod only, no android.
Maybe I'm mistaken, but thanks anyways
have you tried 2x client rdp/remote desktop?
EDIT:
after reading more of what you are trying to do...if you just want a media center remote, use myremote donate. it gives you keyboard and mouse control, as well as a full media center remote. works off wifi. you would need to download the server app for your puter off their website, and their client app connects to the server app to allow control of the computer. I use it all the time as a media center remote control. works awesome!
Try gPad, it's awesome. I hope that's what you're looking for. =)
So judging by the quick search, many people have this problem on many different phones, and no solution was found.
I know I've had this problem with my old SGS 1, and even Nexus One.
Same problem on my SGS II, tethering to many different desktops and laptops.
So it seems to be android-specific, or Windows specific problem, really.
Basically, when you tether with USB, first several minutes all is well and speed is good, but in about 5-10 minutes, traffic from the phone just stops.
Phone still shows tethering ON, PC still thinks it's connected, but nothing loads, it doesn't disconnect, it just drops to speed or 0 kbps.
The only way to restore it is to disable tether and reconnect.
Anybody has any idea why would this occur and how to prevent it?
Does it say no internet connection on the network indicator on the bottom right of the notification center? My guess is your carrier has an issue with tethering. I see your on AT&T. Do they have a plan that is specifically for tethering?

No internet connectivity loss is indicated in windows, it still thinks it has a good internet connection. I'm assuming that after a while, it will detect that although there's a connection, there's no actual traffic flowing through it, and will say that there's an issue... but for a long time, it's simply as if I'm connected, but actual speed is at 0kbps.
Browser tries to load pages and times out in 10-30 seconds.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) this definitely doesn't have anything to do with AT&T. I have unlimited grandfathered plan with AT&T and a custom rom, AT&T has no idea that I'm tethering. Internet on the phone is still working fine.
I kinda feels as if the usb tether drivers in windows (RDIS or whatever it's called) simply gives up after a while. Or maybe it's the android tether process that "forgets" what it's supposed to be doing.
you are running a stock ROM right?

Nope, latest CheckROM.
But as I've said, I had same problem with Captivate and other ROMs on SGS2 =(
i haven't found a custom rom where tethering fully works....thats why i went back to stock
Have the same problem on BOTH my Huawei ideos U8150 and my HTC sensation.
My wirelessly tethered devices still work flawlessly but my USB tethered desktop disconnects after a few minutes. Screen time out set to Max in case something in the phone went to sleep but no difference. Definitely not a network problem as my operator confirmed but an android (or windows problem) .
I even set USB Port power settings to always stay awake.
Hope we can find a solution to this.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e
i got the same problem under ICS. tried on stock ZSLPE and custom XXLPQ firmwares. both do not work!
my stock gingerbread was able to work flawlessly without disconnection problem on the same pc. wtf is happening?!
I have Samsung Galaxy S Plus.
I am facing exactly the same problem.
Have tried different ROM's around 5, 3 were custom ROM's.
Looks like Android OS issue.

I had this problem on both my Samsung Charge(Stock app 2.3.6), and my Motorola Razr(Stock app 4.0.4). I believe it is a driver issue inside windows. It seems less of a problem on the Motorola phone as I get a few hours of USB tether before it exhibits the same problem whereas the charge started after a couple of minutes. ie. Phone has data and can access web, computer thinks its connected to the web and okay, but any attempts to connect to the internet from the pc fails.
The wireless tether works fine and does not exhibit the same issues so I would suggest you use wifi tether. I don't know if wifi tether uses more or less power than usb tether (assuming your phone is connected to computer and charging). If I get some more free time in the next few weeks I might try and do an analysis.

I've had this problems with pretty much every Samsung phone I had.
I have HTC One X now, and it doesn't have this problem. So something with Samsung drivers, I think.
Cool fact - HTC even has a one-click reverse tethering. So cool.
I have the same problem, but can't find out, where (windows or android) is it.
What I have:
Motorola Atrix (rooted with SuperOneClick, stock ROM)
PC with Windows XP x64 without WIFI
The only RNDIS drivers I could find was HTC RNDIS (for XPx64)
Situation:
I'm living in hostel for one month, and there is only WIFI internet here, so I tried to get my phone WIFI to tether into USB
What have I done:
Connected to WIFI over phone.
Turned USB tethering ON.
By default WIFI is not tethered to USB, so I found that turning USB tethering ON creates usb1 network and WIFI is eth0. Then I configured NAT by iptables on my phone to accept and forward connection from PC (usb1) to WIFI (eth0). [usb0 on Atrix is for Motorola Portal, didn't try yet to connect to internet throught portal connection, not USB tethering]
The problem in short:
At the begining everything works fine. But when many connection threads are opened (didn't look for that many count) connection stops. As it was already mensioned, PC thinks it is connected, on phone USB tethering is still ON, even more - ifconfig still shows the connection. The only diffrenece is that "ping 192.168.42.129 -t" on PC (192.168.42.129 is usb1 IP on phone) starts showing "Request timed out" messages. On the other side - from my phone, I cannot ping my PC either. So connection is like broken, no traffic can be passed, but both sides sees they are ON.
After turning off USB tethering, PC sees connection is off immediately and the Local Area Connection #23 is gone. After turning on USB tethering everything comes back to the beginning.
Current workaround (for me):
I am using VPS service, so I open dynamic SSH tunnel over putty, and use it as my SOCKS5 proxy. The worst thing is that not all programs can use proxies, and when I use such program it tries to crash my connection.
Sorry for my english, it is foreign language for me, if anything is not understandable or you need more test from me, please ask, I will try to do my best.

Hi,
I had the same problem with my Android Phone - P999 running Cyanogenmod 7.2
I had to go into usb debugging screen to adjust the Display power Settings to - Always ON when Charging - Option.
There is probably some power setting in your device that allows you to do that as well.
Basically Power Saving (Screen Off) Powers OFF the Tether.
Ensuring the Screen is ON while Charging (it charges while plugged into a usb port) ensures the Tether stays ON ALL the TIME!
Hope this helps you.
Took me quite awhile of messing around to find the right option.
I do have a similar problem but it's not time-dependant.
Phone:
Nexus 4 mako
AOKP JB-MR1 Build 6
franco kernel 3.4.0 build #121
Situation:
I use FolderSync to backup my sdcard to my Windows 7 FTP server. The reason for doing this over USB Tether is that I get speeds at around 14MB/s instead of 1,2MB/s over WiFi.
I noticed that it doesn't really matter how long tether is connected and nothing really happens as long as FolderSync is scanning the folders on the ftp server at low bandwidth. However once a larger file is transferred the connection is almost sure to break and show the symptoms described by the other posters (interface still up, just no packets being received at either end).
So I assume that some driver (either on Android or Windows) chokes on certain packets and then just dies. Anyone got an Idea how to tell which device causes the problem to investigate further?
I also noticed that if I had ADB enabled before starting USB Tether that the tether connection on the android will be disabled once the failure occurs.
I have problem with my realme c2 when i connect it to pc via usb tethering, it connects it running ok. if i make screen on by playing youtube or any video on it run but as soon as screen sleep it disconnect after some time
I'm a bit late to this, but for anyone else still having this problem:
in Developer options of my phone(Redmi note 11) under Networking, there is an option called "Always keep mobile data on". Turning this on should fix the issue
@Denav
This doesn't work for me. I have a Moto G Power 2021 and that option is already checked.

Were you able to figure out the issue? I'm having trouble as well. Mine disconnects after a certain time period and the times seems to be random. I've played around with the dev options and other cables and still having same issue. It seems to happen with mac and windows laptops.
I have a netbook with Windows 7 x64 on it, and I started Virtual hotspot service on it, I did all this to share internet for my Galaxy S II, of course. I use static IP on both devices for the success of the connection.
And I did everything to make it work, and actually it works.
BUT it behaves very oddly. I start the Virtual hotspot, the phone finds it in moments and connects to it, with no problem. Tha signal is strong.
After a while - sometimes after a few second, sometimes after an hour - the connection totally disappears from the phone, it does not appear in the list of connections anymore... But on the netbook nothing odd happens, I mean, nothing by look, no error/warning message, nothing.
IF I restart the phone, nothing happens, I can't se connection anymore!
The ONLY thing what works this time it disable the virtual hotspot functions COMPLETELY, and re-enable it, this way the phone sees it again, and connects as normal.
With every other hotspot I don't have this problem with the SGS2.
This way it is obvious the problem is related to my netbook. So maybe it's the wrong post in the wrong place, I just hope someone experienced the same, and maybe have a solution, idea.
Every advice would be appreciated!
I have the exact same problem using a software called maryfi. Can't figure it out.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I don't use software, I use only commands in command promt, because actually it's a built-in feature in Win 7.
Anyone?
I've recently purchased a Galaxy Note II, i'm having an issue communicating to the device over wifi on my home network.
Wifi works fine in every other way.
Some examples of the issues I'm having:
Wifi Sync with Winamp won't detect my device unless I enable content sharing with DLNA
Wifi File explorer won't work on this phone, it's as if the phone is refusing connections over port 8000 with no user interaction
Device cannot be pinged (I'm not sure if my Desire HD responded but it never had any other the other issues)
I don't have any privacy guard type apps installed, I am rooted and I did have AdAway installed but I have tried it both with the host file installed and without.
I'm a bit lost here, and googling just returns results from 100's of people who can't connect to WiFi.
Ok, this isn't going to help anyone who comes across the same issue but wifi explorer is now working, and the device is responding to ping requests. Winamp sync still needs the DLNA stuff turned on.
I'd have liked to provide a solution but i've absoloutly no idea why it's now working, sorry.
I've got kind of a strange WiFi issue I've been working through for almost 6 months, and by process of elimination, I'm beginning to actually wonder if it could be an Android/Google bug. Only google devices seem to be impacted. I'm gonna overshare information here so that my troubleshooting steps can be audited; sorry if it's a long post. I’m open to any and all suggestions, but I’ve worked through this a ton and am pretty frustrated.
I have a pretty spread out house, so we made the decision to install 3 AP's, one in each far corner upstairs and one in the middle downstairs. Each one has the same SSID, so roaming should work. They’re on channels 1/6/11, all running at 2.4Ghz. I also am a pretty involved linux sysadmin, I have a home server running Ubuntu Server; I call it the HDA which runs my DHCP and a DNS server (and an iperf2 server). I have comcast business class to my house. The network topography is outlined below as best I can, all with Cat6e cables:
SMC Gateway (SMCD3G-CCR)
Minecraft Server (Dell Poweredge SC1425)
HDA Ethernet 1 (Dell Poweredge SC1425)
24-Port Switch
HDA Ethernet 2
Living Room 5-Port Gigabit Switch (TP-Link TL-SG105)
Living Room AP (TL-WA01ND; Channel 1) (Used to be Edimax EW-7228APn; Channel 1)
Xbox-360
Office Desk 5-Port Gigabit Switch (TP-Link TL-SG105)
System76 Wild Dog Performance
Attic 8-Port Gigabit Switch (TP-LINK TL-SG108)
Master Bedroom AP (Edimax EW-7228APn; Channel 6)
Theater Room 5-Port Gigabit Switch (TP-Link TL-SG105)
Theater Room AP (Edimax EW-7228APn; Channel 11)
Xbox-One
I have a bunch of wifi devices as well:
System76 Darter Laptop (Debian Sid)
Google Nexus 5 (Android 5.1, TWRP, Rooted, used to be on 4.4 as well)
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (Android 4.4.2)
4 Chromecasts
HP Work Laptop (Windows 7 Enterprise)
HP Wife's Laptop (Windows 7 Home)
Wife's Samsung Galaxy S3 (Android Jellybean) (INACTIVE)
Wife's Work iPhone 6
Wife's Work HP Laptop (Windows 7 Enterprise)
My DHCP server assigns all static IP's, and partitions things into 2 DHCP groups: primary DNS server pointing to the HDA and secondary pointing to google's DNS, or both primary and secondary pointing to google. All wired devices on the network perform flawlessly, and I've done repeated iperf tests from node to node to verify that the wired network works great, including wires to the APs.
So, now the issues. For a long time I operated under the belief that something was wrong with my setup, and I'm still open to that possibility. I had wifi connection issues on my darter laptop, on the chromecasts, and on the nexus phone. My work Windows laptop, my wife's home Windows laptop, my wife’s work iPhone, and my wife's work windows laptop work fine. After extensive troubleshooting of the network (I changed every setting on all the APs, I even swapped the living room AP out for the different one, and conducted an extensive wifi survey to find the best channel in each location) I discovered my darter laptop has a hardware flaw; the antenna for the wifi is directly under the keyboard, so having the laptop in your lap while typing on it causes dramatic wifi degradation (documented here: www youtube com watch?v=gDekZp3MFA8 ). I got a usb wifi adapter, and I've been golden ever since.
The issue itself: I’ll be connected to the wifi network, and some sites will load fine, then suddenly I’ll try to load something like the reddit app, or twitter, or facebook, etc etc...and it’ll just load forever. I’ll try to upload a youtube video of my son, it’ll take 45 minutes to start, but then when it does it’s lightning fast. Most apps oddly don’t time out...some do; Marvel Puzzle Quest gives “check your connection” but I’ve let “Reddit is Fun Golden Platinum” think for over 15 minutes, and it never times out, which I’d expect it to do in a network-down kind of situation. Reddit is the biggest example, I can browse something like /r/pics and load 5 images from imgur flawlessly, then suddenly the 6th will just never load. Additionally, when I come home from work, I find that even when wifi is on, it rarely connects to my network...in the settings, wifi will have the little ! next to it, but if i just manually connect to the network it connects instantly. A couple of times on my nexus it gave me the “poor connectivity” exclamation mark while already on the wifi, but I believe I disabled that using this guide: android. stackexchange. com questions/100657/how-to-disable-captive-portal-detection-how-to-remove-exclamation-mark-on-wi-fi All the services are fine, because I’ll drop off wifi and switch to LTE and everything loads fine. If I iperf to my HDA by IP from the Nexus, I’ll get very mixed results...I’ll get no response whatsoever and a timeout, then disconnect and reconnect (landing on a different AP) and it’ll work, but slow, and repeat again with different results. It feels like there’s an intermittent thing going on where the device forgets how to wifi for a bit.
My work also has a multi-AP setup; tons of Cisco AP’s broadcasting about 6 APs. I have trouble connecting here with the Nexus 5 as well, it doesn’t auto-connect (going into wifi settings, it says “Wifi Connection Failure”), and when I do if it even connects it’s very slow...meanwhile my laptop is on the same wifi and it’s lickety split. This is trickier since I don’t control the services and can’t test as well, also things like websense are in play. Both at home and at work, the wifi worked fine before the upgrade from 4.*. I did some validation with the networking guys, from the radius side I’m golden, but at this point I don’t even try to connect anymore. (Actually, today, I tried on our unrestricted guest net as well, same message, “Wifi Connection Failure” and that’s our unrestricted network for patients...iphones sitting right next to me are fine)
Before, my wife's S3 worked ok, but it was time for it to be replaced and she got a Samsung Galaxy S6, then at the same time got a galaxy tab. The phone came with Android 5.0.2 and the tablet came with 4.4.2, and she’s now having wifi issues. Additionally, our chromecasts do the same kind of thing (though it’s harder to debug). I can cast a song from DSub off my LAN subsonic server, and it plays fine...then it goes to fetch the next song, and may just sit for 20 minutes...never times out, but just hangs. I’ve gone and moved ALL wifi devices having issues into the DHCP group which just uses google’s DNS to eliminate that as a factor, but it hasn’t helped anything. Screencasting or watching Netflix drop off the chromecasts constantly.
So I did some testing, to eliminate variables in the multi-ap setup, I performed an iperf test with my laptop and my nexus right next to each other after renaming 2 of my APs so there’s no roaming. I performed all these tests sitting in my living room, both devices using the same DNS settings and sitting about 18 inches from each other. Reminder, Master and Theater are pretty far away.
Test 1: Master Bedroom AP
Nexus 1: 10.4s, 384KB, 302Kb/s
Nexus 2: 20.1s, 640KB, 261Kb/s
Nexus 3: 11.5s, 1MB, 732Kb/s
Nexus Speedtest: 184ms, ...stopped saying “Network communication issues” mid test, so I re-ran, 27ms, 1.44Mb/s down, 0.10Mb/s up
Darter 1: 10.7s, 1.5MB, 1.18Mb/s

Darter 3: 10.3s, 1.50MB, 1.22Mb/s
Darter Speedtest: 25ms, .81Mb/s down, 1.35Mb/s up
Test 2: Living Room AP
Nexus 1: 10.1s, 6.75MB, 5.63Mb/s
Nexus 2: 10.1s, 6.12MB, 5.07Mb/s
Nexus 3: 10.2s, 4.75MB, 3.92Mb/s
Nexus Speedtest: 31ms, 8.07Mb/s...stopped saying “Network communication issues” mid test, so I re-ran, 29ms, 17.50Mb/s down, 5.05Mb/s up
Darter 1: 10.5s, 6.12MB, 4.92Mb/s
Darter 2: 10.1s, 7.62MB, 6.31Mb/s
Darter 3: 10.3s, 6.75MB, 5.51Mb/s
Darter Speedtest: 18ms, 15.13Mb/s down, 7.68Mb/s up
Test 3: Theater Room AP
Nexus 1: 111.3s, 512KB, 37.7Kb/s
Nexus 2: 32.5s, 384KB, 96.9Kb/s
Nexus 3: 102.9s, 331KB, 26.3Kb/s
Nexus Speedtest: Too weak to successfully load speedtest
Darter 1: 24.6s, 384KB, 128Kb/s
Darter 2: 25.7s, 384KB, 122Kb/s
Darter 3: 30.0s, 512KB, 140Kb/s
Darter Speedtest: Too weak to successfully load speedtest
So, the network is consistent-ish across them all, but the speedtest thing is exactly what I seem to experience. It’s FAST FAST FAST dead FAST dead FAST FAST FAST dead.
I don’t know what else to do. I am posting here since it’s the Google wireless devices all doing this, I don’t have a single complaint from a wired device or a wireless linux/windows device. It’s the android and chromecast devices that are giving me hell, and other than this correlation I’m stumped. I don’t know how else to troubleshoot; I don’t want to have to replace the APs but if I need to I can try to talk the wife into it. Just to be complete, I’ve theorized and tested the following to no avail:
Roaming Threshhold - Eliminated multiple AP’s with same SSID, no improvement
DNS - Switched to google DNS for all clients, no improvement
Channel - Surveyed and changed channels, no improvement
AP make/model - Replaced one AP, no improvement
Home network connection - Tried at work, no improvement
I’ve attached my network topography stuff, I can provide DHCP and DNS configs as well if anyone thinks it’d be helpful.
