Just bought the Verizon moto e at best buy and have it working on t mobile but want to install custom roms.
Sadly it does not. Just bought mine today as a secondary device.
I am just hoping that someone can do something to unlock that bootloader (could the stagefright vulnerability be used to do some things since it does have some root capabilities?) or at least get the device loki'd.

i bought it for the same reason at best buy to uses as a backup for myself or a friend of family member. Just like you i was curious about rooting and custom roms for it. Sadly i found out by trying to follow the tutorial to unlock the bootloader and when i went to Motorola website for the unlock code it said my device couldn't be unlocked :crying:

Just now wile typing this it actually got me thinking and the thought of the Verizon variant being able to be used on. got me wondering.
Under the hood of the Verizon Moto e is the hardware exactly the same as the other variants or are there more radios for the Verizon network? I ask this because if its the same would there be someway to install the international variant bootloader on the Verizon variant and then unlock it?
if that sounds very stupid im sorry lol. I don't know very much about unlocking devices besides how to follow tutorials of how to unlock a device. But i do know how to flash and install things im kind of a flashaholic thats one reason i looked to unlock this device right away

Can't overwrite the bootloader since it is locked, the partition is locked to read. However, I was thinking, since it has that 5.1 update, it must've written to the system partition and which case I wonder if a fake update of some kind be used. Kingoroot also somehow can mount and write to the system partition through their rooting process, if someone can figure how it does that, there is hope for this version.
There is also the possibility of someone developing loki for this phone too, which would bring at least some custom action to this.
Verizon does some weird things, both it and AT&T, I just don't understand them. AT&T locks down the device and sometimes they even get updates that were released for the phone. Verizon declines other phones which people want. Anyways, we only paid $10 for phone, couldn't say no to that, right? Unlocked SIM and if they do find a workaround, just cherry on top of the icing.

I hope so, would really suck to stay on 5.1 and miss out on any security updates, etc.
But from the looks of scanning through part of the forum, no seems to be taking on the task of figuring out a way to do so. The one guy that was trying had school that took over his time and then there are no other threads about it.

The question is then, should I keep it or resell/return it ?
I need some help to decide what to do, hence this message.
The main interest for me was - and still is - the "photo quality" this Phone delivers.
And if I read well some posts here and there, the app provided by LG is the best one for this phone, better than ported ones from other builds or photo apps on GooglePlay.
=> a) could someone confirm that the best photo app for quality pix is the one provided by LG ?
As of still today (2018-03-03), the bootlader cannot be unlocked and certainly never will because this is done by LG Developpers and there is no interest in making an "old" bootloader unlockable for LG "heads".
This means no "custom recovery" with TWRP, no apps requiring root access, no "better" wifi eventually ... and so on.
No big deal for me as my main concern is debloating the phone more than anything else and keeping it updated for security reasons and keeping it update with genuine patches supposed to solve eventual issues. (The phone is old and these patches should be out by now).
=> b) If TWRP cannot be used, what is the best solution for the fullest backup and closest one to TWRP ?
Holo/Helium ?
Or is there a new/different way to do the fullest possible backup/restoration thing ?
LG G5 H820 seems to be still running on MM and at least other models such as Verizon and EU H850 should receive this year Nougat.

it does have nougat
security patches will likely happen for a few more months, but i imagine not much longer since nobody cares about this phone
i dont backup anything. its just a phone. auto save your pictures to google and screw the rest. you cant do a full backup so why bother with a partial one.
best camera app for me is the stock one (nougat). ive tried others but they have weird issues. stock app always works and the quality is good.
if you want everything youre asking for, this isn't the phone to do it. As a stock phone, its wonderful.. but trying to modify anything on this is a joke. I did get wifi tethering to work with the settings database editor (playstore), and i was able to remove the stupid ATT address book popup... but thats about it as far as mods go.

The bootloader thing + root is not for customizing ... it is more more for debloating and convenience of usage is some particular change of setting goes wrong AND ... fop apps requiring root eventually.

If you don't use ATT or ATTGo, then the phone (H820) will not update. But, you can buy an ATTGo phone sim card on ebay for like $3. Once you get the sim, go to ATT's website and activate the sim card. It will ask you to enter in some info... you can use a fake name if you want but you don't need to. Once it gets to the option of which plan you want, just pick whatever, it doesn't matter ($30/month plan is fine). Then it will say "activated! now go to payments page to make your first payment". Then just close the browser and that's it. Pop the sim card in your G5 and wait about 10 min before you try to update the phone. It should start taking all the updates, and eventually put Android 7 on it.
The sim will remain "active" for about 20 days. After that, the system flags it due to non payment and then its dead. It can't be used for anything besides updating the phone, because you didn't put money on it.
I agree with wanting to root so you could debloat this thing... I wish that was possible... but it's not and generally I don't think it matters... just disable what apps you can, and the couple ATT apps that can't be disabled are just left as is. Oh well. Phone still works great.

You can download T-Mobile's firmware from LG to upgrade your phone. AT&T have their own server to host the files.

I would still spend the $6 on an AT&T SIM and give it a shot. I am in Canada and activated the SIM I've got off E-bay on a $40 plan that includes roaming. My updates work.
Would it be because the plan I've picked has the Canada & Mexico Roaming option? Not sure.

Hello Pixel-ers! Just wanted to throw this out there to see where we end up (forgive me, mods, if I have sinned).
I just received my Pixel 3 from Sprint, and, unsurprisingly, the option to OEM Unlock is greyed out. I mostly expected this so I'm not super worried about it, but I was reading other forums and some users suggested that unlocking the SIM through Sprint might allow the bootloader to unlock as well. (I'm admittedly confused by this as I don't understand fully the relationship between the SIM and bootloader, but I digress...)
I contacted Sprint advanced tech support to see if they had any insight. They seemed to end up where I did, presuming that the bootloader can be unlocked if the SIM is unlocked. But I'm left with a couple of questions.
1) Has anyone already purchased the phone outright from Sprint and able to confirm if SIM unlocking allows bootloader unlocking?
2) Anyone tried the previous for unlocking the bootloader, like those for the OG Pixels (deleting the android phone apk?) or similar?

Damn that sucks, guess that's the price of going carrier. I fell victim of unlockable bootloader when I sent in my pixel 2 and got back a refurbished one. I tried the old tricks and nothing worked. I sent it in as rma. The 2nd rma still could not be unlocked. Only options are to return it, deal with it, or sell it and buy one directly from Google or other route.
Sure there maybe a way down the line but it's not likely going to be soon.
Pretty certain it just requires a unlock from Sprint first. Knowing the Verizon variant has a locked bootloader and looking on Google's own factory flashable image site we can see there are only 2 different images to download, the stock unlockable image and a separate Verizon labeled image which is obviously separate since it has a locked bootloader in the image. So the Sprint model has to be using the same os as the straight from Google model but the unlock option is still greyed out, leaving the only other possible lock being the sim/carrier lock put in place u til the device is paid for.
It's also the same situation for my Nexus 6 I financed from Sprint on release, running Crdroid and the system images on Google's site list a stock release and a separate Verizon release as well as a T-Mobile release but the only difference being the T-Mobile image contains a different radio img. I cannot think of any cross carrier device that is unlockable on one model while the Sprint model being locked, Sprint being the smallest of the major carriers they tend not to go out of their way to restrict customers, been a customer for over 10 years, they may have incompetent, poorly speaking, slow phone reps but they still allow 1000x more compared to Verizon lol. I use around 800gb - 1tb a month for years and they just laugh when I talk to them, try that with Verizon lol.

Right?! I've been with sprint for like 10 years too and they are absolutely incompetent when it comes to pretty much anything and have been since day 1. I usually have to walk them through most things I've asked them to do, but they have been pretty chill about lots of stuff. Anyway, I guess my biggest worry was that I'd pay off the device and it still wouldn't be OEM unlockable, but this at least gives me hope that my pain and suffering with them won't be for nothing. The two images will merge into one in the next month or so and the only difference is radio and network. That has been what has happened with all of the Pixels on release. There is no difference in the image that locks it, they all run exactly the same software. The Google ones ship locked and only unlock when they are connected and phone home for permission to unlock.
That said, I agree that Sprint will be able to unlock them. That is exactly what EE in Europe does. They come SIM and bootloader locked. As soon as you fulfill your contract they flip the switch and you are SIM and bootloader unlocked.
So we know Google has a system set up for this, and that it works. The only question is will Sprint participate in it. My gut says yes they will.
yep...got my Pixel 3xl today from Sprint, and low and behold its locked up...i was honestly shocked, whats worse is my current phone is a Essential....from sprint...thats been unlocked since first boot....FML
I think what is happening is that Google has now declared the Pixel 3 line and above (the a series) enterprise ready. Meaning security and thus being able to keep the bootloader locked thus no root. That will allow businesses to purchase a Sprint, Verizon or TM device plan and make sure the bootloader remains locked no matter who pays off what. They tested it with Verizon the past 2 years and they now have it down. At some point in the near future, IMO, all bootloaders will be locked except the Google (or Fi) bought device.
I also believe the refurbishment channel on Google store replacement devices will be as Pixel 2. I had a unlocked Google store Project Fi that when device was exchanged through store four times were not unlockable. Finally gave up and received credit. From a restocking point of view lock, unlock is important to us, but the previous statement on business needs makes sense.
Can someone with a non Sprint version check this in Mobile network>advanced. I think this is how it knows to be greyed out for oem unlock.

I have this tmobile version which i bought from a store as a 2nd hand. For the first 1 month the SIM card (carrier) worked, after the 1st month it shows (network locked) I used their app to unlock permanently and ofc it says "Not eligible" the other option is temporarily for another 1 month.
And now it has been expired and cant use the sim card again.
Any solution on how to unlock it ?
It was written up a few months ago here on XDA, but removed because it's a paid solution. You have to find the guy who can spoof your H932 to another T-mobile model number, then use T-mobile's servers to unlock it. And I think you have to temporarily downgrade your T-mobile H932 to Nougat for all that to work.
Only T-mobile servers can unlock current T-mobile phones. If anyone tries to sell you a "code" that works right now for your V30, you are wasting your money.

I didn't realize that thread had been deleted about a 3rd party service which unlocks T-Mobile phones. That's too bad since there are many legitimate scenarios where users need that to unlock a fully paid off phone.
@STALKER18: I seem to recall the service was called TMB Killer, but could be wrong. Try googling that and see what you get. No guarantees!
As ChazzMatt wrote, TMO phones can NOT be unlocked with a code like other phones, so don't believe anybody trying to sell you that.

Was it T-Mobile H932 (which requires a special procedure connecting to TMO servers) or some other V30 model (which can be unlocked with a simple code)?
I'll keep asking this question because many 3rd party services sell codes -- and happily promote themselves with links on these forums -- but they don't work with H932.
So unless somebody specifically reports unlocking a H932, I'll assume it was just a simple code (again, which doesn't work on H932).
With several posters now having reported unlocking with the service you mention, but none of them confirming it's for H932, even when asked, I'm getting a bit suspicious, thinking this is a service H932 owners should avoid

Being a spammer, I assume these lg/samsung simunlock DotCom guys (link obfuscated) would also happily take money from H932 owners, even though they cannot actually unlock their phones. So I say stay away from them!

I share your suspicions. Especially since prior to those three posts in the past 24 hours, last time he posted was over a year ago. Maybe he's being helpful all of a sudden? I don't know.
BUT if T-mobile H932, he should know the carrier and model number is very important to state. He wouldn't just say "V30". We can already carrier unlock all the other North American V30 and even the rare H932PR (Puerto Rico) V30 -- by ourselves. Unless the person specifically says "T-mobile H932", I don't trust them to know what they are talking about for SIM card unlocking. I don't even like the title of this thread, as it's not specific enough. (But that's just me, because I know of the H932PR V30, which is completely different animal.)
It's like when people ask in WTF bootloader unlock thread, "Why didn't this work?" And they fail to say what variant and what firmware (especially) they are on. Because if you read the instructions, you know those are the two most important items for it to work. So, anyone would specifically mention that information when asking for help. That makes me very suspicious they haven't really read anything -- and I'm usually right.

I just reported the spammer just above this post. It's going to disappear soon. He posted several times today in different device forums, promoting his various SIM unlocking services.
I almost engaged him, to ask if he had indeed unlocked T-mobile H932 -- then I saw his post history and knew it was useless. Spam bot.

Being a spammer, I assume this www.lgsimunlock.com would also happily take money from H932 owners, even though they cannot actually unlock their phones. So I say stay away from them!
If I am wrong, AND you really unlocked those three different phones, AND one of them is indeed a H932, I apologize and will happily update my post.

Got it. Yeah they had to be reported sooner or later. I thought of reporting them back then, but figured it would be better to keep the posts here as a warning to avoid that service. They'll still have the SEO benefit, but at least H932 owners who see this would know this is NOT the one to give their money.
@mods: I would say when you weed out the spam, leave the warnings from Chazz and/or myself so that future readers will know to avoid that service.

Just before your post was yet another spam post promoting lg/samsung simunlock DotCom (link obfuscated, that post now deleted). We know that those guys are spammers, and probably scammers too. So anybody looking to unlock their phones should avoid them. And H932 owners should definitely avoid them!

No, the site you mention are spammers and scammers. They can NOT unlock recent (past three years or so) T-Mobile variants which need access to T-Mobile servers. If they claim they can do it, they are lying.
For our V30 the only variant which cannot be carrier unlocked by ourselves via Frankenstein is the T-Mobile H932. You have to find someone who will help you spoof another T-Mobile model number and I think you have to temporarily downgrade to Nougat. It's a little complicated. For T-Mobile phones if someone just offers you a code, they are trying to scam you.

It's another spammer. They made a number of posts the last 24 hours about using that site to unlock all kinds of phones. I reported them, maybe you did as well. I think their strategy is to post spam often enough to drown out our warnings.
Edit: I live in FL where roaches are always a concern. We keep our kitchen super clean (you have to in this climate) and have generally been without them for years. When occasionally we saw one in the past, they were always the big American Cockroaches. But this summer we began seeing the smaller German Cockroaches, which are notoriously hard to get rid of. Suddenly came out of nowhere. Every time we think we have them beat, another one shows up. And only when we have to get up at night for a sip of water or something. They come out only in the the dark.

Oh, I noticed! And as I mentioned in a previous post, I am aware of the SEO benefit they get from me mentioning them in a post. OTOH I also want to warn other members against them, which works best for newcomers if they know who I am warning against

Well, I'm sorry, but I don't remember the exact process.
The phone has to be rooted.
If I'm right, I had to edit a file in my H932, to change its name from H932 to H930 (or something like that).
Then I downloaded the TMB killer software on my computer, bought credits, pluged my phone and launched the program.

Absolutely not possible. Samsung in their infinite wisdom decided to make the u and u1 (north American models) not have an OEM unlock option in the software because without that the bootloader can NEVER be unlocked and no bootloader unlock no flashing anything but Samsung software.

Isn't the locked bootloader issue, at least in North America, more about the demands of the carriers? Particularly Verizon?

Nope because even if you buy it out completely from Samsung without a carrier you still can't unlock the bootloader in north America. It's baked into the firmware for all u and u1 devices that Samsung removed the ability to OEM unlock

Oh, I didn't even know that. I remember back a decade or so ago, when I first got into flashing firmware and all that, there was a lot of talk about how Verizon and (I think ATT) were basically demanding the phone producers lock the bootloaders. And they cited things like "safety" arguing that it was dangerous having people run unofficial operating systems on their networks. That kind of garbage. I guess that's not what it is anymore, which is even more sad.

It's one of the big talking points of right to repair now the right to use your device as you want because if you install what you want on something you own, do you actually own it?

Yeah for sure. Wasn't that part of what went into the Library of Congress basically making explicit it was okay to root/jailbreak your device?
I haven't been able to properly unlock a bootloader and root a phone since my LG3. The S7 had that ENG boot you could flash but that impacted your phone's stability. My S20, I know for a time you could pay people to unlock you, but that also made me sad LOL and I never did it. I miss being able to unlock and root "normally" but have learned to cope, I guess.

Hi I'm definitely considering on purchasing a a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, but now that I read that US version bootloader can't be unlocked the question is which variant should I get International or Global? I live in US will these versions work properly on T-Mobile? Currently I own a OnePlus 7T Pro it's rooted and I have an awesome custom ROM on it. I was going to upgrade for a newer model and then I found out that OnePlus has made it difficult to do so, it was so easy that if you bricked your phone by a mistake to recover using MSM tool which was available publicly at no cost. The newer models not so if you happen to brick your phone you have to pay, at a hefty price to have it un-bricked remotely and even so not guaranteed to work properly after. Anyway will Global or International S23 Ultra function on T-Mobile also I'm well aware that by rooting, the Knox will be tripped. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

It should but I don't think 5g will be supported but other bands should work. But don't quote me on it.
