Roaming issues Redmi 5 - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 / 5 Plus Questions & Answers

Hi
I have a Redmi Note 5 running Miui Global 12.0.2 stable. I have had the phone for 4 years and go to Italy twice a year. I have had no problems roaming since I had the phone. Last week. I went to Italy and could get voice and text but no data roaming. Tedata roaming setting has 3 options, never, for exceptions only and never. The phone was set to never, I changed it to always but it immediately reverted to never. Kept trying but always does the same. I tried tomanually select an Italian network but all the networks were the same result.
On returning home the phone is still doing the same if I try to enable roaming.
The only thing I changed last December was I enabled Volte calling in the APN.
Any help would be appreciated before I buy a non Redmi phone
thanks

Hi, I encounter exactly the same issue as you (same error on roaming, and same phone, in Italy), did you find a way to address the issue?

[Q] Roaming problems on the S2

I have a problem with roaming.
I am on MTS who has joined with Rogers network.
On stock ROM: 2-6-35-7-i9100xwkf3-cl276555 rootdell101 #2
I go to the US
Phone works on roaming
Can receive SMS
Cannot send SMS - Send fails
I have since rooted and installed Alienware 2-6-35-11 ninphetamine 2.1.3 xxkh3
I go to the US
Phone has 4/5 bars and can't get on network to roam
can't send/receive SMS
when dialing get the Mobile network unavailable message
My wife's samsung galaxy S i897 works fine -
Swapping SIMs with her yields the same failures on my S2 with her SIM.
In both cases, crossing the border home fixes the problem and life is grand.
I have tried:
1.enabling data roaming
2.rebooting
3.battery pull
4.swapping sims
Is anyone else having similar roaming issues - is there a ROM that actually works while roaming from Canada while in the US?
I have seen problems on my old Galaxy S and my wife's similar to this as when trying different ROMS, but have never gone across the border with any of these ROMS installed.
What I've seen with different ROMS is:
1. sometimes cannot get phone to get on network unless I setup the APN settings first
2. sometimes cannot get phone or data to work without enabling roaming mode. The phone actually says it's roaming even when it's on the home network
Is there anything I'm missing in the forums on this issue?
Thanks for the help
hmm, maybe you've tried, but have you checked if the APN list is accurate ?
i believe there is an app to set the APN on the market ( can't remember the name though, never had the need for it.)
or try to google if you can find the APN setting of your network provider.
Seem like an APN problem to me as you explain it.
on the phone, you can access that with :
Settings >> Mobile networks >> Access Point Names and then the details of each APN can be checked/edited.

[Q] Can rooting disable international roaming?

My venerable Samsung Galaxy S i9000 (rooted, Android 4.2.2 using CyanogenMod 10.1.2 ROM, on Virgin UK) has always served me very well when roaming abroad, and up to last year I had no problems with data connections. I'm just back from France, and could not get any data connection for the entire 2 weeks I was away (I bought a travel pass of course, and got confirmation of validity). This is totally unprecedented. I spent hours on the phone (calls and texts were OK) to Virgin, who variously said they needed to refresh my account settings at their end, then that there were known European network issues, and then that the problem was with the phone. I was told to turn on international roaming, but I don't have that option. The options at Settings>networks>mobile networks are:
Data enabled - ticked
Data roaming - ticked
National data roaming - ticked
Access point names
Use only 2G networks - unticked
Network operators
I don't have anything called international data roaming, and indeed have never seen this on any Android version I have ever had. I have seen images of other phones where `data roaming' is replaced by `international data roaming', and I'm sure there is no technical difference. Roaming is roaming surely?
I am very suspicious that there is actually nothing wrong with my phone, and that something odd is going on with Virgin. The reason is that last year I was running Android ICS using a different ROM, and mobile data kept turning off. This went on for over a week until Virgin found it was their fault and fixed it. At that time they never mentioned international roaming. I've done the usual searches and not turned up anything useful. There can't be anything wrong with the handset because data access turned straight back on when I got back to the UK. Can anyone shed any light?
Hmm. Calls and texts were working though, just not data? And it wasn't an APN setting? I'm assuming they had you check those. Did it show you were connected to data but there was no data transfer? In Settings > About Phone > Status - what would it say? Disconnected? You've used the phone on that other network before? It's possible that the other carrier's data frequencies aren't supported by the phone.

Yes they got me to check all settings and all were OK, except that according to Virgin there should be this `international data roaming' option which I don't have. The signal strength icon on the home screen showed a little R not a little H as normal. So I don't think there was any data connection. My key question though is whether there is any evidence at all that rooting affects roaming. I've been searching the web for over a week and found nothing about that. Frankly I don't believe it.

Galaxy S6 Edge SM-G925F on T-Mobile USA and LTE/Data problems

Hello. I have an SM-G925F which I bought from Telekom Macedonia and I am still using my number from there also but I am currently in the US and would like to use it on T-Mobile USA.
I know that the device supports all the same bands as the SM-G925T model.
The problem I am having is that when my phone is set to LTE/WCDMA/GSM in the Network Mode settings, I do not have any data connection at all, only when I make a call, I start to get a data connection but only 3G/H+. If I switch my setting to WCDMA/GSM, then I get a data connection at all times like normal but it still is only 3G/H+. I have tried two different APNs and different settings in the APN but I still cannot get a data connection at all times on the LTE/WCDMA/GSM setting and I cannot get LTE/4G at all.
After contacting T-Mobile, all they came up with is to try to have the same software reinstalled on my phone. Does anyone have any experience with this and can anyone help me?
Anyone?
Call Tmobile and have them input your phone's IMEI in their system. Ask for the APN settings as well. I am on the same boat and one call to ATT got me from H to 4G. Your phone will just show 4G, not LTE but you will get LTE speeds regardless.
I tried doing that too. I called T-Mobile a few times and they confirmed my IMEI number being on the account but still no luck. It's really weird..sometimes I get 3G/H+ on the "LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect)" network mode setting on the phone but most of the time, I get NO DATA connection at all..only the signal bars.
Any Update
Did you finally figure it out? Is LTE working now?

Mate 20 Pro Does not switch to 4G/LTE anymore, why?

Hey guys,
I have a HW mate 20 pro , and for a couple of days it does not switch to LTE/4G anymore, it stays only on 3G and i dont understand why. It worked fine for a few weeks , phone is new.
I have it available on my ORANGE PLAN (in Romania), i did not change any setting in the phone, i have even changed my simcard today but with no result, i have reset my network setting, even did a soft reset.
What should i do? Is there any problem with the carrier?
Any thoughts on this? Everything else works.... PLS HELP
Please check the SIM in some alternate phone if possible to identify carrier issue.
Sent from my LYA-L29 using Tapatalk
anu3682's advice is a solid first step to rule out any carrier issues. If the carrier is not at fault, make sure the 'LTE mode' has not been disabled. In your settings, search for 'LTE' and an option for enabling LTE should pop up.
Under 'Mobile Data', make sure your preferred network settings are 'Automatic 4G/3G/2G'.
If you've ruled out the above, consider backing up your phone and do a factory reset.

Question Stuck on 2G

I'm in the UK, I have been using the phone for a few days now and I'm finding that it often gets stuck on 2G even when there is 4G available. The only way I can get it back on 4G is to go into the SIM settings and manually search for my provider.
Had anyone else had this problem?
Dial *#*#4636#*#* and set this option= "WCDMA/LTE" manually.

Nothing happens when I dial that, it just disappears off the screen.
You can set it to 4G/5G Manually and it'll change to 2G if you're in a remote location!

Did you ever find a solution? I'm having the exact same issue here in Denmark on a Samsung S21 Ultra (Android 12) and S22 Ultra (Android 12 and also after upgrading to Android 13)
Dialing *#*#4636#*#* had no effect (just hangs up)
Only manual remidy besides waiting 4-6 minutes, is the one you suggested by searching for other network OR entering flight mode.
Seems to be related to roaming between masts, it doesn't happen when I'm in one location but always when in a bus/train/car, my iPhone 12 with a sim from the same carrier stays perfectly connected throughout (or quickly reconnects to 4G/3G when the signal is back)
Super weird...

I actually changed to a different network provider and the issue went away, I suppose the phone just doesn't work well with particular suppliers.

Thank you! I'm currently doing the same experiment, so far (only a week) it seems to be better also. Super weird...
