Question Dual-SIM (pSIM+eSIM) Cripple Implementation (U/U1) - Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

I have used a number of dual-SIM devices in the past, although none ever from Samsung until now. They have all been Dual-SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) implementations. Those significantly older devices though has a lot more control over how the two SIM's worked together and for different functions. The s23 Ultra almost seems like a step backwards in terms of a decade by comparison for dual-SIM implementation. The s23 Ultra only allows me to set a primary SIM. It doesn't ask which SIM I want to call from and just assumes I want to call from the primary SIM. With texts, MMS messages don't download from the non-primary SIM unless I manually switch the primary SIM to the other SIM. Is there something I am missing or just not familiar with how to setup a Samsung device for ideal dual-SIM use? My OnePlus 8T and Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 were vastly more advanced in their dual-SIM implementations.

Idk why you're not getting texts on non primary but I have 1esim and 1psim and I get texts for both and even send from both within seconds of each other. 1 work line, 1 personal line, I use Textra and it has an option built into the text box that lets me switch which sim I send from.

Regular texts are fine. It's with MMS that don't and won't come through unless I switch the primary SIM to the SIM with a pending MMS. I can't send an MMS from the non-primary SIM either. I have to switch the primary SIM to the other SIM.

Are you using Google messages app for texting? If so rcs might be your issue, the limited time I did use Google messages and used rcs it was buggy as all get out. I was getting regular messages days later instead of instantly, MMS would just have a button that says couldn't download and I'd have to tap that to receive MMS (which most of the time for me is group chats so then everything is out of order)
this was my problem on my old zfold3 so I switched to Textra back then (and still use now) and it doesn't use rcs (because Google hasn't released public API for it and only works with their app) and haven't had anymore issues with texts, MMS, or dual sims

I do use Google Messages but I have RCS disabled and RCS has never been enabled on my s23 Ultra. I still receive the "Tap to download" on the non-primary SIM and "Can't send message" when sending an MMS from the non-primary SIM.
I haven't used Extra in ages. The lack of customization has me favoring Pulse when using something other than Google Messages. I will give Pulse a try and see if that makes any difference.

I would just try a different text app to see if that solves it, also maybe resetting your APN settings? Idk
Textra in last couple years has a ton of customization
But I haven't used any other app so idk lol

I will try a few. With Textra, the last time I used it. It lacked the abilitity to set a color for each contact and there was no gradient color options and no HEX color code option.

That's a step in the right direction.

It is definitely a Google Messages issue. Using Pulse, it automatically switches the connection for sending and receiving an MMS message, even when the SIM isn't set at the primary SIM. I really appreciate the help with this, @spart0n! I text a lot and hate having my texts being unreliable in any way.

Thanks, this issue has happened to me a couple times now since my data SIM is my secondary SIM which has to be set to default and was really annoying me.

Its been a Google messages issue for as long as I can remember when using dual sim. If you're not using RCS, then I'd recommend samsung messages or textra for dual messaging. It automatically downloads without having to switch sims. I just enjoy RCS too much to go back to regular sms/mms

MMS Issues - FIXED!!!

Edit: Found a fix for this.
I downloaded about 6 different texting apps and the only one that fixed my MMS issues was Textra, and I had to configure it in a very specific way.
Downloaded Textra
MMS
Use MMS for Group Chats = CHECKED
MMS Settings
Prefer WiFi = Unchecked
Activate Mobile Data = CHECKED
T-Mobile WiFi Calling Fix = Unchecked
APN Settings
Manually Configure APN = CHECKED
MMSC: http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
MMS Proxy: *leave blank*
MMS Proxy Port: 80
Save the settings and reboot your device and test it out.
I tried to do similar settings on other texting apps but none of them fixed my MMS issues. Now with Textra they send super smoothly. Some apps won't even let you configure the APN. I tried this in Handcent and GoSMS and it didn't work. I also can't change the default APN settings within the phone.
I believe the specific thing that got this to work was the Activate Mobile Data = CHECKED option in Textra.
Thanks to all in the thread that previously mentioned using Textra!
The Z3V is now a perfect phone LOL
Original Post was here:
Wondering if anyone else runs into MMS issues on their Z3V? Mine is incredibly slow at both sending/receiving MMS. I am using the Verizon Messages App, I have tried almost every other Messaging app out there (Handcent, Textra, GoSMS, etc...) and none of them solve the problem.
Verizon Messages had potential as the Tablet/PC versions are able to use MMS over a Data/Wifi connection (rather than the MMS-specific data). Unfortunately, on the phone versions of the app, it only seeks through data/wifi if a regular MMS-data connection is not available. I've contacted VZW about this issue before and they've tried escalating my case and I've spoken to developers and voiced my concerns. Still no fix unfortunately.
I thought the MMS issues were inherent to VZW's network, however, iPhone users have absolutely no problem receiving or sending MMS from/to Android users. (Obviously when they send to iPhone users it uses data through iMessage).
The poor MMS performance makes group-texting very frustrating with my friends. Yes, there are alternatives like whatsapp, hangouts, that use data, but that forces other users to download those apps. (And Hangouts is super broken as is).
Wondering if anyone has figured out a solution for getting lag-free group messaging/MMS on their Z3v? I've also tried messing with the APN settings but everything is grayed out.
On another note, I will randomly get messages "No APN present on device", anyone else get those?

I use textra and group text alot. When I'm in a place with good cell service group texts are great. However at my parents house where the service is not good as in barely can make phone calls, group texts come in bunches. Also get the apn error message and I tap the notification and all the texts come through.
I use regular text messaging app and I've never experienced problems. Maybe do a quick reboot to see if it helps?

No a reboot does not fix the issue. Maybe it's the area I'm in (Los Angeles County) that is dealing with a ton of bandwidth? But it still doesn't explain why iPhone users are able to use MMS just fine.
VZW has even gone as far as sending me a beta version of their newer app to try to run some testing, but that ended up getting replaced with a newer release of which nothing was fixed.
I have a Z3 from Tmobile and sometimes I can't download MMS...... or don't recieve them until much later. Sometimes I only recieve the replies from people, not the original sender.
I've never had a phone that didn't have a hickup or two or three with MMS from time to time. My opinion it has much less to do with the app or phone than it does with the current status of the network.

If that's the case, why do iPhone users have no problems with their MMS on verizon? And no I'm not referring to iMessage. I mean when they are sending/receiving group texts to Android users.
We can have our phones side by side, and the iPhone users will receive the group message a whole minute faster than us android users. And yes the original message was sent from an android device.

Ha, well if iPhone never has problems then you proved my generalized opinion on the matter wrong. My apologies. I've honestly never owned an iPhone and used it as my daily driver, much less time tested it against Androids. I have however been technical support for iPhones in my family and to say there are never issues is not exactly true either, it's just much less often when it comes to MMS.

No need to apologize, you're correct, an iPhone isn't going to be perfect either. While they do run into their occasional hiccups with MMS, our Android hiccups seem to be constant. It's quite frustrating to be on a group text with 5+ friends and the Android users are getting incredibly delayed messages. By the time the messages come in, the topic of conversation has past.
It just makes me wonder, what about Android devices (on VZW at least) is causing the craptastic MMS issues that iPhones don't seem to have a problem with. Although these MMS issues are infuriating, it's not enough to make me switch to an iPhone. There are just too many features I love on the z3v (and Android in general).
I have to post here so I can say I have had an online conversation with ConanOBrien.
My wife has problems with her Z3v, but I don't, we can get the same MMS message and I will have no problems and hers will indicate it couldn't download the MMS . Same with sending hers has a problem mine doesn't, same room feet away from each other.
I blame an app, I have very few apps but she has a few games, I think maybe one may be accessing her MMS and causing a problem, only logical answer I can think of.
I avoid the Verizon default SMS. I switched the google messenger app for my default SMS. It works like a charms and real smooth
I typically install Textra right when I get a new phone but haven't felt the need yet except that I wish it had a dark mode which Textra has.
Another reason I have not installed 3rd party apps is that I wanted the phone to earn my trust on its own merit which it's done so far.

I updated the first post with the instructions on how I fixed it. I believe the combination of manually setting the APN as well as checking the box to "Activate Mobile Data" within Textra is what got it to work finally
I tried this, same everything. Does not work for me.
EDIT: Went back to using Hangouts. I disabled "Queue background data" in power management and I was able to download/receive my mms. Need to further test.
Had an opportunity with Wife's phone not receiving MMS, what I found was mine had "roaming MMS" checked hers did not, once I checked it hers worked.
Open messaging app, click the three dots in the upper right hand corner, settings, find "MMS roaming" and check it.
Thanks for this, I was having problems receiving mms. I tried your steps and my problems are gone. I was going to return the phone, so glad I don't have to now.

I am not sure if that will work. I couldn't get any other app to work with my MMS settings other than textra. Other apps like Handcent allowed me to manually configure my APN, but none of them had the "Activate Mobile Data = CHECKED" setting, which I believe was key to getting it to work.

Issues receiving calls and text

I haven been noticing that I been missing a lot of calls and getting delayed text messages once in a while I am currently running on the t-mobile network here in the US. I have a one plus 6t as well and I tested it and I receive my calls with no one mention that my phone has went to voicemail. I have even performed a hard rest to see if maybe it was an app or a setting and still continues. Anyone else experiencing the same thing? Call log shows no missed calls and asked several people to text me with the time they sent out the text and it's delayed at times for over 30 minutes thanks in advance
I've had an issue similar, no one could call me until I call them first, Just went straight to voicemail everytime someone tried to call me.. I think it has something to do with the Wi-Fi switch because I turned off the Wi-Fi and turned it back on and it corrected itself. I could still receive msgs but where delayed until then.

Hi mate,
I had similar issues (at least with delayed text's) when locked. It was a battery saving issue, just make the Messages always run without power-saving option enabled.
Had issues with calls when Call over WiFi was enabled (enabled by default), disabled it and now works flawless (even with VoLTE).
Yea, been having this issue since I replaced my S9+ with the Mate 20 Pro.
My MintMobile SIM registers as T-mobile on the Mate 20 Pro. Most of the calls I don't receive and my wife says it goes to voice mail after first ring.
Where in the settings I can make adjustments to help eliminate this issue? Thanks!

I'm having the same issue on MintSim in the US. Messages seem fine but sometimes calls seem to go straight to voicemail. There is no calls over wifi setting on my phone as far as I can tell (and no volte) so I would be interested if there is a fix for this as well. I never had the issue with my P20 Pro but it's happened several times with the Mate 20 Pro.
I'm tempted to manually input the MintSim APN settings but since the signal is very strong with the default T-Mobile settings I'm not sure how that could help.
I'm using the MintMobile Ultra APN settings. If I default to the T mobile settings, mms don't work.

This only happens to T-Mobile and most likely related to WIFI calling, incoming calls goes to voicemail right away for me sometimes (both Note 8 and Mate 20 pro), but my wife on AT&T never had this issue

Strange. With the default T-Mobile settings mms works for me and my signal app shows a stronger signal than with the Ultra settings.
Which signal app are you referring to? For me, I usually have to turn wifi off for mms to come in or sent out. It doesn't work when the wifi is On, with either the T-mobile or Ultra APNs.

Hi everyone,
Did anyone find a solution to the problem? I still have an issue with text messages and calls. I'm wondering if I should get a new phone....
Actually I just found one. I believe it has to do with Wi-Fi calling being on. Normally this option is supposed to be usable under settings and mobile networks, but since I'm using T-mobile I find the option completely off the phone or so it seems. I downloaded quick shortcut maker from the Google play store. Once opened I just typed in the top search bar Wi-Fi. From there you'll see 3 icons, a phone, settings, and wifi. Select the settings icon, scroll all the way down. Now you should see 2 entries that read Wi-Fi Calling, select the first one, the click on the middle button that says try. Wifi calling should be enabled, just switch it off and that should be it. Attached some screen shots of the process so it shouldn't be difficult. I was going crazy when people said they tried calling so many times but not one I receive or messages that are delayed for up to 30 minutes. I hope this solution helps anyone in this situation
Wi-Fi calling on my Mate 20 Pro is grayed out. So that cannot be the case for me.
Yea, my wife gets very upset when she calls me. Out of 10 calls, just one will come through. She will leave a voice mail, and hours later I will get the notification.
Sent from my LYA-L09 using Tapatalk
You selected the first one? When trying the second wifi calling option in shortcut maker the wifi calling was greyed out and the slider didn't work at all
Same issue
I've been fighting with my Mate 20 Pro since the day I got it. I'm on T Mobile. Some calls go to voicemail, some calls make it through. It's hit and miss. I haven't been able to find a common denominator. There's also a cellular data issue with the phone. When streaming video, the connection will suddenly drop out. The phone shows good signal, but it loses data. Turning the cellular data off and back on again fixes this issue. I think the data issue may still be related to the Visual Voicemail issue that T Mobile has with these phones. I was able to get Visual Voicemail to work (mostly) but I think the data is still affected by the Visual Voicemail issue , albeit to a much lesser extent than then it was before. I've been in contact with T Mobile and they have no solution to this issue. They did a sim card swap for me, but the issue persists.
Same sort of problem here. I'm on a KPN business contract, have been for many years. Never a call problem with the mate 9 and 10 but if people call me on the m20pro they don't hear the dial tone so they usually hang up thinking my phone is switched off or something. This really sucks!
I loved the m10pro especially but the m20pro is not my friend due to the calling issue and the really crap LG screen.
I've posted this issue on T-Mobiles Forum in hopes of getting them to take notice. Here is the link.

Voice call LTE tablet

Hey,
I am using an ATT Sim in the Verizon tablet. However I am not able send or receive messages/calls. Tried different dialers and message apps. Is there anything I need to enable for this?
Thanks in advance .
Your sim card has to be provisioned to tablet. I tried the same with an older tablet and couldnt get anything to work. You'll have to call att. I had tried all of the things you mentioned as well
I dropped my SIM into a T715 with Lineage 16 on it and both Google Message and Facebook Messenger worked fine with both SMS and MMS. Didn't try the phone aspect.
Tried same thing on Verizon 827 and it won't let me past "Do you want to change default SMS app."

My V30+ struggles with sending/receiving multiple recipient texts

I'm having an ongoing problem communicating via text with more than one recipient at one time. I am running Stock (rooted Oreo), have tried numerous texting apps (Message, Pulse, Signal, etc) If I copy two people, it sometimes takes forever to send out the text. And quite often when one of the recipients replies back, I do not see it or it arrives much much later, or they squirt onto my phone all at once. Am on T-Mo and use wifi calling. Any ideas? I use my phone for work, so solid communication is required with my tech out in the field.
I have used Messages (Google's replacement for the stock messaging app) and Hangouts for multiple-person texting for years with no issues. I didn't see you mentioned these, so I wanted to mention it. I'm on stock rooted VS996 on TotalWireless.
As mentioned, I have used Messages, Pulse, Signal , they all seem to suffer from this same issue. If I go in settings, and disable combine group texts, the individual ones get to recipients, but then that defeats the purpose of using multiple texts. The two people I most often text with use Apple phones, unsure if that is a factor. very frustrating when trying to work from home & run service department. I thought Google closed Hangouts?

Ahh, crapple... that's likely the problem. Crapple loves to do non-standard crap, and that may be issue you're facing. Their incompetence makes SMS group texting impossible (because they suck at using standards).
That said, apparently you may be able to force MMS on your Android, to work around their idiocy: https://joyofandroid.com/group-messaging-android/

Indeed Crapple. Checked out the link, but it seems that I already have these settings in place. (Messages and Pulse are the two I switch between) Trying Textra now. Thank you for posting this
Do your MMS work? I haven't had a video gif work in Messages in a year!
I can text gifs. I support our two service techs out in the field, and we text each other all day. So I text them both some info, or a question to answer or whatever. It may take up to a minute for the app to show my text has been sent. Then I don't hear anything back from either guy. So I retext hey did you see my earlier text? Then they will reply, yes, and I answered you. But I do not have any response. Then later on, suddenly it get several texts squirt thru all at once, minutes or hours later. They both have iPhones. Here at home, wifi calling is the only way for me to use my phone as we have horrible signal at the house.
Yes, MMS works for me in Messages just fine. I also get them on my work phone (Moto Z3) from iPhone users, too. No issues whatsoever...

I wonder what the heck is wrong with my service? Anyone on Verizon with the US99820h not getting MMS to animate? Mine literally just come in as blurry pictures and tapping it does nothing.
@christoophat: Do you have Battery Saver or Data Saver enabled? If so, turn them off.
But if you have poor cell signal at home (I am familiar with that predicament) then SMS (including MMS) will always be spotty.
You can get a Google Voice number and use that instead: It all goes through data (WiFi or Mobile data) for calls as well as messages. I'd do that in your case.
You'll have to give your coworkers the Google Voice number instead of your current mobile number. Behind the scenes you can (optionally) route incoming and/or outgoing calls through your mobile number instead of using data. But certainly at home just let it use data.
In the old days, you'd use the Hangouts app to do Google Voice messaging and calls. I still do. But today you're probably better off using the Google Voice app, which has everything built in.
Edit: I should have mentioned that you can also port your current number to Google Voice if you don't want to give your coworkers a different number. But that will terminate your current mobile carrier account. And it can sometimes take a day or two to go through.

A great benefit of Google Voice is that you can make/receive calls and send/receive messages on any number of devices, including right inside Gmail on your computer. I write most messages this way because I prefer a real keyboard and selecting/editing with a mouse. I also do a fair number of calls this way. My PC has a wired connection which means lower latency than WiFi.
We also have Ring Central phone app, but it's used mostly for client only communication, so I can keep personal phone number separate. But you can't do multiple texts to anyone outside Groups (people who also have RC on their phones), so that is limiting.
Hah, I didn't realize the Google Voice is a separate app now that I will use to text. Will try this out & see if it does a better job. Thanks again

Question Delayed texts received Version C

Anyone else experiencing this?
Had the phone about 5 weeks. Reside in Canada, its a Version C unit.
Experiencing delayed receipt of texts in group chats and single texts. Using android messenger after a full reset w Textra as previous messaging app. Settings left stock, initially after reset worked fine and boom all of a sudden receiving mms and texts as old as 4 days ago in group chats. Getting to point that considering ditching device. Spoke w carrier they show no issue on their end. Issue seems to be xross plaatform w iphone users. I dont want an S22 and only option is a Pixel 7. I bought ZF9 for size, everything else i like but this is too much
Are you using RCS?

NO as I far as I can tell I am not as I am outside US, being in Canada on Virgin/Bell network. Is there a way I can look or turn off this feature as I am using the default android messenging app
I'm in Toronto on bell and have the ZF9.
All text are working fine.
To check RCS, open the message app, go to settings, chat features. Should show connected or maybe trying to connect.
Try deleting data/cache for both the message app and carrier services. Then re enable RCS.

Thanks going to try this as I did find settings and turned of RCS features. I have RCS chat features turned off currently. I have deleted data/cache now for both messaging app and carrier services, will pull sim and turn off device , reinsert sim and restart. Wondering if I should re-enable RCS chat features or run without first to see if issue continues before re-enabling
Update: even following the above and having RCS disabled since restart, reinsert of sim and clearing of data/cache on carrier services and google messenging app w/o messenging app connected to my google account I am receiving delayed texts in a group chat from iphone sender. I am beginning to wonder if clearing cash on their end may resolve. My Virgin carrier says everything seems fine on their end even though they don't support this device. I guess I may have to wait a period of time to see if this resolves as I am unsure what I can do that is left. I have already factory reset the device as well. Any additional comments are welcomed
