[SHARED] /e/OS - OREO (DISCONTINUE PROJECT) - Samsung Galaxy J5 Guides, News, & Discussion

/e/OS is a complete mobile ecosystem which includes a mobile operating system (ROM) and online-services. The /e/OS project was launched at the end of 2017. It has historically been the first mobile OS to focus on deGoogling.
/e/OS is:
Open source
Pro-privacy
Compatible with existing Android applications
Cares about usability
running on more than 200 different smartphone models
/e/OS is an alternative to the Apple/Google duopoly for smartphone users.
/e/OS consists of:
an installable mobile operating system for smartphones, which is forked from LineageOS/AOSP, and completely “deGoogled”
a default set of open source applications that have been improved and optimized for the user
various online services that are linked to the mobile operating system, such as: a meta search engine for the web, a cloud drive with data synchronization, mail, calendar, notes, tasks.
Description of the /e/OS ROMThe /e/OS ROM is a fork of Android and in particular the LineageOS flavor of Android.
At present we have builds on six Android versions:
Officially Supported
S
R
Q
Discontinued:
Pie
Oreo
Nougat
What ‘discontinued’ means
newly released applications like App Lounge and Advanced privacy are not customized for these OS versions.
lack of dedicated ROM Maintainers
no support upstream (Lineage dropped support for Pie sometime back)
device trees will continue to exist in the Gitlab
users with build skills can create custom ROMs on these versions
Security patches and vendor patches for the Pie, Oreo and Nougat code will be updated based on availability.
Google stops security patches for OS after some time. Similarly, Vendors drop support for older models when they release newer models in the market. Then it depends on developers from various communities to backport the patches.
DeGoogling / UnGoogling in /e/OSThe goal of “deGoogling” is
To remove or disable any feature or code that is sending data to Google servers, or at least to anonymize those accesses
To offer non-Google default online services, including for search.
the Google default search engine is removed and replaced by other services (see below in default apps and services)
Google Services are replaced by microG and alternative services (see below for more details)
All Google apps are removed and replaced by equivalent Open Source applications. The one exception is the Maps Application
No use of Google servers to check connectivity
NTP servers are not Google NTP servers anymore
DNS default servers are not Google anymore, and their settings can be enforced by the user to a specific server
Geolocation is using Mozilla Location Services in addition to GPS
CalDAV/CardDAV management and synchronization application (DAVDroid) is fully integrated with the user account and calendar/contact application
/e/OS default applicationsAll pre-installed applications are open source applications except for the Maps app (read details about this in the Maps FAQ).
Web-browser: an deGgoogled fork of Chromium, built from Bromite patch-sets, with specific /e/OS settings. It features an ad-blocker by default.
Mail: a fork of K9-mail for better user experience, some bugfixes and support for oauth, with OpenKeyChain for PGP encryption support
Message: a fork of QKSMS
Camera: a fork of OpenCamera
Dialer: default Android dialer application
Calendar: a fork of Etar calendar, that fixes crashes with calendar invitations
Contact: default Android contact application
Clock: a fork of Android deskclock application
Gallery: default Android gallery3d application
Filemanager: Android documentsui application
Sound recorder: default LineageOS sound recorder
Calculator: default Android calculator2 application
Keyboard: default Android keyboard
App Lounge is the /e/OS application installer, that offers millions applications. Applications are accessed from Google Play Store (commercial apps), F-Droid (open source apps) and also Progressive Web Apps, all at a single place. App Lounge features a “Privacy Score” for each application, computed from the number of trackers found by Exodus Privacy in each application, and from the number of permissions.
Other preinstalled applications:
Maps: MagicEarth (read the Maps FAQ for details about its license)
PDF reader: PdfViewer Plus
Notes: a fork of NextCloud Notes to support Murena online accounts
Tasks: OpenTasks

Help needed with spoofing location!

I am trying to spoof my location as a driver on an app that provides similar services like Uber. (will not mention exact app name) I am seeking information and education on the data that apps like Uber retrieves from our android devices.
My hardware and software details:
Oneplus 3T running CM 13 (6.0.1) with Magisk v20.1 and Nano GApps package + Google maps. The device's physical signal cable has also been removed and the back case replaced with aluminium foil tape.
Android security patch date: 01 April 2017
Google play services version: 19.8.31 (040408-284611645)
Installed as a system app, the paid version of FakeGPS Route (1.6.1) by incorporateapps is used with the following settings
Developer options mock location: off
Expert mode: on
Disable "fused location service": off
No root mode: off
Enable joystick: off
Start on boot: on
Auto close: off
Update interval: 25ms
Automatic altitude: on
Gps altitude: 19m
Gps accuracy: 2m
Move around fake location: off
Hold position when finished: on
Repeat route when finished: off
Route mode: driving
Gps speed: 25km/h
I only spoof my static location as the routes feature moves at a defined speed which makes things pretty fishy. There are no problems such as rubber-banding or any other issues with the above settings as I physically removed the signal cable from the phone.
The developer of the app that I was spoofing on managed to detect that I was spoofing my location. I was given a warning and was suspended for a week. There was no error message prior to logging me out.
I have been messing around with APK Editor Pro trying to figure out what I did that tipped them off but have no idea what and where to look.

"Welcome to Google Maps navigation. Don't forget to pay attention to your surroundings and always obey the law. Google may collect your location data when the App is running in order to provide and improve our services. This data may also be shared with **** to improve their operations. Google's terms and privacy policy apply." (Cancel / Yes, I am in)
I suspect that information regarding my real location was leaked from the above. It was necessary to agree to it in order for the app to run. My location history in google settings was on and I have other devices uploading my real location.
Question: Am I right to think that the app retrieved information of my real location through google?
I have turned off location history since.
Camera
- take pictures and videos
Contacts
- read your contacts
- find accounts on the device
- modify your contacts
Location
- access precise location (GPS and network-based)
- access approximate location (network-based)
Telephone
- directly call phone numbers
- read phone status and identity
Storage
- read the contents of your SD card
Other
- run at startup
- view network connections
- prevent phone from sleeping
- view Wi-Fi connections
- use fingerprint hardware
- receive data from internet
- install shortcuts
- read Google services configuration
- control vibrations
- re-order running apps
- have full network access
- retrieve running apps
- Play install Referrer API
- Pair with Bluetooth devices
Above are the permissions granted to the app. With my limited knowledge, I have highlighted those in red which I feel may be able to leak my real location. I understand that FakeGPS Route in expert mode will spoof the permissions under “Location” but what about the others?
Question: Is the app able to retrieve information about my real location with the other permissions?
Question: If the app saves information about my location, how and where do I look to access those files?
Any guidance is appreciated. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.
TLDR;
I am seeking information and education on the data that apps like Uber retrieves from our android devices.
Q1: How do I view the data that the app has retrieved?
Q2: Am I right to think that the app retrieved information of my real location through google?
Q3: Is the app able to retrieve information about my real location with the other permissions?
Q4: If the app saves information about my location, how and where do I look to access those files?

AppGallery Connect is a one-stop open service platform for the entire app lifecycle, designed to facilitate enhanced, and accelerated app building and running, giving you a leg up on the competition. AppGallery Connect 10.5, the platform's latest version, provides for a wholly optimized user experience, including a home page with futuristic visual effects, cross-platform app management capabilities, and access to a broad array of services, such as App Messaging, Cloud Storage, and Auth Service. These updates give you the tools to better build and operate your apps.
Brand-new home page
The home page has assumed a fresh new, user-friendly layout. The My projects entry enables you to manage apps of different platforms; Hot services provides a glimpse at trending services, and More services displays a brief overview of all available services. Service cards also provide direct access to corresponding services, sparing you the hassle of having to search for a desired service, and find it from a lengthy list.
Visit https://developer.huawei.com/consumer/cn/service/josp/agc/index.html to try out the new version now. You'll notice that AppGallery Connect has designed a unique icon for each service, making it easier than ever to identity them.
App Messaging
This service provides invaluable assistance for refined operations, by sending contextual messages to active users when specific events are triggered, boosting user engagement and stickiness. In-app messages can work in tandem with your app's activities. For instance, if you have a shopping app, it can display a message instructing the user to claim coupons upon repeated taps on an item by a user when authorized or after message subscription by the user. Or if you have a reading app, the app can automatically display messages to intensive users who have read for more than half an hour in a single session, offering a 20% discount off of subscriptions. These types of messages can successfully boost your app's conversion rate.
You have the option of using a pre-set style, or customizing the display of your in-app messages. Image messages are recommended if the content in the message is relatively simple.
Banner messages contain a thumbnail, with the message title and body, and are displayed at the top of the screen. Users only need to tap on the banner message to be directed to the corresponding page.
Pop-up messages are recommended for richer, and more complex content, as they consist of an image, title, and body, as well as up to two buttons. Examples of each message type are shown below:
Cloud Storage
Cloud Storage incorporates a treasure trove of premium storage, upload, and download functions for a wide range of different objects, including images, videos, and audio files. The Cloud Storage capability is bolstered by the following attributes:
1. Airtight protections, enabled by declarative security and automatic encryption mechanisms;
2. High degree of stability, thanks to the implementation of resumable transfer and intelligent network acceleration;
3. Autoscaling, to provide for automatic resource scheduling and enterprise-level storage.
These characteristics allow for you to focus single-mindedly on improving the quality and user experience within your app – reserving all of the hassles associated with developing, deploying, maintaining, and expanding capacity for storage servers, or monitoring server indicators to ensure availability, reliability, and durability – for AppGallery Connect.
Enhanced Auth Service
Building a user authentication system is both challenging and costly.
Auth Service makes the construction of a secure and reliable user authentication system, a hassle-free and cost-effective process. Authentication capabilities are provided as services, meaning that you can assemble all of the services you need in code for your app, with minimal O&M work.
The new and improved Auth Service supports a wider range of authentication modes, including mobile numbers, email accounts, and Apple IDs, and can be integrated into iOS apps. If you opt to integrate Auth Service before August 1st, 2020 , You will be eligible to receive the following benefits:
1. 30,000 free SMS verification messages every month
2. Dedicated technical support during service integration
3. An opportunity for broad-based exposure, as a successful case study
The free quota of SMS verification messages applies only to the mobile number + verification code authentication mode. If you are interested, please send your information in the following format to [email protected]: [Company name + App ID].
AppGallery Connect also comes with a version history management function, which allows you to query and download the app versions you had previously developed, as well as an interaction center that provides for direct communication with the platform. We think that you'll agree that AppGallery Connect 10.5 is chock-full of surprises. Just sign in to explore a pioneering new version for app development!

HUAWEI Quick App Supports One-Click Web App Packaging and Release
HUAWEI Quick App supports one-click packaging of HTML5 web apps, which is a new and easy-to-use feature and can help to open up a broad market.
Quick apps rely on the cross-platform engine of Quick App Center to provide users with a stable and smooth experience.
When to Use One-Click Packaging?
You can package a web app into your own quick app as long as it is based on HTML5 and provides the same experience as that of the native app.
Advantages of One-Click Packaging
1. One-click packaging helps you reduce development costs.
2. Users can obtain and directly use your quick app on HUAWEI AppGallery once you have packaged and released it.

Telegram HMS vs GMS

Telegram HMS vs GMS
Telegram is a very popular app for communication, and it's a good way to manage large discussions and communities. With Telegram relying on many different file sharing and voice call functions to operate, the HMS or GMS framework is needed to run the app. That means that the app is available in both the Google Play store, and the Huawei AppGallery. For many phones that do not support GMS, it's a great thing to be able to have the HMS version of this app.
GMS - Telegram
Telegram aims to be an easy-to-use messaging app, with basic functions like file share, audio/video calls, group messaging, and more. There's a big focus on speed and simplicity. Adding friends and sending messages is just about as barebones as it gets. Unneeded features do not cause the app to become bloated, as many other messaging apps are.
For people who value security, Telegram encrypts all of your messages using a combination of 256-bit symmetric AES encryption, 2048-bit RSA encryption, and Diffie–Hellman secure key exchange.
For managing communities, Telegram has the ability to host group chats with 200,000 members. All of which can be sharing files, videos, photos, and any sort of file type.
One of the most impressive qualities of Telegram is that the service is 100% free and does not contain any ads.

HMS - Telegram
Now for phones that don't have GMS support, like newer Huawei devices, Telegram can be found on the Huawei AppGallery. This is a different version of the app that relies on HMS Core services to operate. Despite the difference in the code, the app is able to function normally. All of the features are here, that you'd find in the standard version of the app. You can also communicate and share files with other users normally, even if the other users have the GMS version of the app.
Telegram's decision to make their app available on HMS services has opened the app to a market of millions of more users. One of the great things about Telegram is you can be pretty confident that just about everyone has it. This makes it easy to add people to your contacts and keep in touch with them.
Enjoy all of the same security features, along with the speed and simplicity that you've learned to love in Telegram. The app is still free of charge and comes with no ads on the Huawei AppGallery.

App Linking FAQs

Q: What is HUAWEI App Linking? What does it do?
Description: App Linking creates a link to be shared. When a user taps the shared link, a specific app is launched, and then they are linked to specific in-app content.
Advantage: Links of App Linking can be used on multiple platforms, including Android and iOS devices, and PC browsers.
Function: Once you integrate App Linking into your app, you can send a link to your users for them to share with their friends, or use one for promotion.
Q: What are the differences between HUAWEI App Linking and other competitive products?
A deep link is a basic capability of Android. It identifies apps based on a URL scheme. That is, when a user taps a link or program to access a web URL, the Android system identifies and displays all apps that support the URL scheme. After the user selects one from the list, that app can be launched.
App Links (Android):
Android supports App Links since 6.0. App Links are a special type of deep links. With the function, a user can directly open an app through a web address without needing to choose one from a pop-up.
Universal Links (iOS):
Universal Links are App Links of the iOS version, and have been available since iOS 9. They allow apps to be launched through HTTP links.
Though they both have been developed for years, they have two disadvantages:
1. Poor cross-platform compatibility: It takes a lot of workload to adapt them to different platforms.
2. Poor user experience when a requested app is not installed: When a user taps a link to launch an app they haven’t installed on their device, they need to install it first by themselves before accessing the in-app content.
HUAWEI App Linking can solve the problems. It not only has all the advantages of the solutions above, but also does better. App Linking supports both Android and iOS devices. It allows you to set link behavior as well. You can link a user to HUAWEI AppGallery for app install, and they can still be linked to the target content after installing the app and launching it for the first time.
Q: Does App Linking support non-Huawei devices?
Currently, the App Linking SDK 1.4.1.300 no longer depends on HMS Core (APK), and can be used on all Android devices.
The iOS SDK has also been released. For details, please visit:
https://developer.huawei.com/consum...c-applinking-sdkdownload-ios-0000001058715537
Q: If a user has not installed HUAWEI AppGallery on their device, can they be redirected to the local app store?
You can set the link behavior to Open a local app store, as shown in the following figure.
{

"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

}
For non-Huawei Android devices:
App Linking uses the MARKET protocol to launch all app stores installed on the device for the user to choose from. After the user selects an app store, App Linking sends your app package name to it. Then the app store will search for and display your app.
For iOS devices:
The user will be linked to your app details page on App Store.
Q: Are there any restrictions on data statistics of App Linking?
l For a link of App Linking created in AppGallery Connect, you can directly view the numbers of clicks, first-opens, and re-opens. (This function is not supported if the link is created on the device side using the App Linking SDK.)
l App Linking can work with HUAWEI Analytics to collect relevant events. All tracing parameters you configure can be viewed in HUAWEI Analytics.
