I don't really use WiFi so it's not that big of a deal but for some reason, when I do try to turn it on, it looks for a network, does find something, but then immediately shuts itself down before actually connecting to anything... Not sure what I did to cause this. Anyone have any ideas?
I've found the wifi chip to be extremely picky. I had an older SMC b router, and my TP would find it, try to connect but ultimately time out, while my Mogul would connect no problems. I bought a Buffalo b/g router and all is now good.
I also am hit or miss with the TP with hotspots. But if you can NEVER wirelessly connect you may have a defective wifi chip. There have been some threads in other communities where this was the case.
Well I ended up hard-resetting my device and the WiFi now stays connected... I must have changed some registry setting at one point...
Now that we have our usb adaptor up and running,
does anyone think a usb to ethernet adaptor would work?
I'm going on a trip recently and it would be awesome if the tab could hook up to the internet access in the motel room ( they dont offer wireless)
These usb-ethernet adaptors only cost $20 so it would make the already useful tab even more worth its price!

I don't think the drivers will be available, I'm fairly certain you'll be able to pick up a portable wireless access point for around the same price which you could plug into the Ethernet at the hotel.

Drivers shouldn't be a problem.
Init scripts, DHCP, etc could be - the userland stack probably has no concept of wired Ethernet connections.
I don't have a portable USB Ethernet adapter so couldn't really look into this. Easier to just get a small AP.
What about for places that don't allow any wireless AP? I am deployed, and all I have is my xoom, no laptop, nothing else -- went to area that did have wireless for the first bit and had zero problems. We just moved to an area that does not allow wireless of any kind (i.e., Airport Express wireless AP router, etc), mainly for security reasons. So I don't have a laptop to work through any connections. I have an Ethernet cable sticking out of the wall staring at my Xoom. Is there any type of adaptor that I can get to allow me to be hard-wired without the use of wireless?
I can't use any type of tethering (no cell phone coverage). So I'm hoping there is some sort of mini-usb adaptor to USB to modem to ethernet...
I am looking into this as well. I do service on moving heads (lamps) and they have a web server built in for diagnostics. I would love to just use my tablet to connect directly to them.
My adapter is an Asix AX88772B. It worked before on my china tablet on 3.2. but after I did an ICS upgrade on it, it stopped working.But that tablet sucked in all possible ways !

even i was searching the web for a solution ..found that for xoom and acer tabs...a kernel code was written through adb shell and yes a wifi only tab could connect to internet through the dongles....wish some dev takes this us and experiments with our tab

I also am in a location that doesn't allow any wireless AP or travel routers. Once I attached the travel router, it gets knocked off the network. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. I would love to find a solution to connecting an usb ethernet adaptor to it.
I have tried the bobjgear usb ethernet adapter on my note 10.1, no joy. I also have another one (pluggable) on a different asix chip which needs more power to get going. I don't think the tab can supply enough for the led lights on it. Have ordered 5v injectors. So yet to see. Although I may well be barking up wrong tree as the note may not have drivers at all. I read somewhere that note may have some compatibility but mut be correct chip. So I will keep on testing until exhausted.
One the plus side bobjgear's website does list tabs that work out of the box with his adapter

I travel quite a bit and it is surprising how many hotels still don't have wireless in the rooms. Most have an ethernet connection available and I carry a long cable. Is there a dongle or other solution for connecting the Sony S? I am getting a travel wireless modem, but hate having to carry more stuff.

Hey guys this is my first post here. had been consulting xdadev for a while now.
My problem is where i go to college i get roaming and i cannot use my internet there. so i though of this solution,
Buy a usb wifi dongle which takes 2G 3G Sim cards and converts into a wifi signal. the one i wish to buy is Huawei E355 (Wifi Dongle) Data Card.
Use a battery pack with a USB output the one i saw is really cheap has a 5v output by the description. DigiFlip Essential 2200 mAh PC004 USB Travel Charger. <Help me find out if a battery pack will work with the dongle, i have no idea since this is my first time using a 3g dongle. (using wired internet to a wifi router in home.).
I was thinking if i can just connect the usb wifi router with data card in it to the battery pack and put it in my pocket. and use internet via wifi,
Let me know if that's possible.
I tried searching for a similar post but was unsuccessful if you know of any which is already solved please send the link.

Hopefully someone can help me out here. I have been trying for weeks to fix an issue I have with my Samsung Galaxy S5. Currently I have a Netgear wnr1000v2 router connected to an Arris Touchstone DOCSIS 3.0 modem (Comcast). The modem is located in my basement and my home has an Ethernet ports in every room. That being said, my modem has a Ethernet cable that ties in directly to the port to my office on the second floor of my home, no other jacks are active but the one leading from the basement to my office. The Netgear WNR100v2 is connected directly into the jack and I have another Ethernet cable going directly to my desktop. My wife has a laptop that is on the first floor of the home and there is no problem with that connection, we even can go outside. When I do speed tests on my desktop, they average about 15-25ms ping, a down speed ~90mbps and an up speed of 11-12mbps, all GB of course. My laptop has the same ping and up speed but the down runs about 40-50mbps.
This is where things get strange. I installed a the Netgear WiFi Analytics app on my S5 and I get 100% signal but it varies from 35-65mbps. I would be ok with that if it was true. Something very odd happens when I try to search the web, go on facebook, youtube or any other site or application. It just clocks and clocks and pictures never come up. I can easily switch on to 4G LTE (verizon wireless) and boom everything is there no problem. If I visit someone else's home with a wireless network, when I connect, everything is fine.
I have changed my wireless channels to 1, 3, 6, and 11, identified that I am the only network using channel 6 or 11 and although that has actually sped up my laptop connections, it has done nothing for my S5 smartphone. I only use WPA2/AES which again by taking away the TKIP with WPA2, it has sped up the laptop, but nothing for the phone. My signal strength on the phone when I am 5 feet from the router is around -35 to 40 dBm, and does not vary much until I go outside the home. I can go into 90% of the home and still get those numbers. I have unplugged the batteries in my cordless home phones, nothing. Turned off home alarm, nothing. Even other people's cell phones are slow in my home.
I do work out of the home so I have no reason not to connect to my home wifi and reserve the data for when I leave the home. One other caveat, is my work, for some strange reason requires me to have DSL for my work connection, but I put that on channel 1 and the home cable is on channel 11. They are, however, in the same room but I do not thing it would make a huge difference....I turned that off too and still no improvement.
So, I am at a loss....I have been playing with the wifi settings for weeks and I am not getting anywhere. Thanks in advance for any help, advice, or suggestions!

Kinda sounds like a dns issue. Not so much a speed/connection problem, but that would probably cause same trouble on other devices. Router should just get dns info from the modem. For laughs, see if anything is set in the router for dns. Should be blank. Same on your s5.
