XDA-developers presence at CCC-Camp, Berlin, August 7-10 - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

Reminder:
We will have a large XDA-developer presence at the Chaos Communication Camp near Berlin, August 7-10. We will have part of a large 6x9 meter tent to set up equipment and hang out. Lots of people will be there, great discussions about new cool projects, more crypto on the device, and the Camp will see the official start of a serious effort to port Linux to the XDA. bigmac, Itsme, W4XY, The Key and yours truly will all be there, and we'll have a complete electronics lab and lots of other fun stuff on hand.
If you can add any expertise, or just want to hang out with us, make sure you pre-register and head over.

The most elaborate uses you have seen or done with the XDA!

Inspired by another post; I was wondering just what are people using their XDA's to do. I'll go first. This one's not my most productive application nor noble use of the device but it should get the ball rolling
My friend was obsessed with this girl who wouldn't give him the time of day. So I recorded a conversation her and I had and emailed it to my friend via inbox for his personal collection  (not proud ) but the things we do in the war of love for our friends suffering
I don't know what's unhealthier that he keeps a personal collection  or that I would participate or encourage such behavior  how old am I  anyways boys will be boys
(I just know I'm going to get a call from an Attorney tomorrow ....of all the websites she could read it will have to be this one:roll
Anyways I though that would be a good starter I actually pretty much push the device to it's limits in my day to day use of it as a business tool. I've been running a virtual office starting with Psion Devices back in 1991. I hadn't even graduated high school yet  Over the years in the Entertainment Industry from 16 until now I developed a reputation of being the guy with the newest coolest gadgets, but they have always been strictly powerful tools to me giving me an edge on the competition. Sadly before other programs & Outlook became the predominant backup of your digital rolodex cards, I lost YEARS of acquired resources & Hundreds of numbers to a coin-cell battery drain one day . At one point in 1995 a producer, my boss! stole  my latest Psion (he use to joke that the entire entertainment industry was in that little black book of mine), to get the information out of it. I was just a lowly intern .
At the time there was only really the hard way, by hand. So he denied it for weeks, finally gave up on what a monolithic task it was and it suddenly appeared in my desk drawer again:roll: I hadn't realized what I managed to achieve, something that at the time was unheard of. The paper equivalent couldn't be carried around with you nor the information accessible in a timely manner. It may very well have been the first portable/pocketable database/resource on the entertainment industry created :?: It's a total shame it was lost It would have been nice to show people what extraordinary accomplishments even the earliest of these devices could achieve. People still look at me funny as if all I'm carrying around is a calculator/cellphone combo. These devices still aren't even realized! :| I waited 11+ years for the XDA and I can almost taste the future of what I've been waiting for these devices to be able to do. OK I have to stop salivating now there is a Geek Crown waiting for me somewhere
I am just disappointed that 11 years ago the things I could do with these devices shocked people, as if it was some sort of parlor or unobtainable magic trick. Now 11 years latter companies and individuals still have no clue what they have in there hands or how to apply it. My parents to this day say "What do you want to be if you grow up?", but I refuse to surrendered my fascination with the future, my willingness to work hard to implement constant change and adaptation as an advancement to allow change as a whole to remain a good thing in my life. We have really gotten lazy. Change is only welcome if it is "so" user friendly that it does not require us to change the way we do anything, and only requires the illusion of more efficiency ok where's that geek crown
But seriously, what are the coolest things you've done with your XDA
This is a hotbed of super-geek infestation 8) lets hear the paces you've put this baby through :!:
That's freaking hilarious! Wonder if I know the girl.... I live over in Glendale.... doubt it but it is a small world!!
You live in Glendale?! She just moved to the valley  ......you're not her attorney...
I'm surprised more people didn't want to share what they use their XDA for Maybe it's there are much worse uses than can be posted  Do tell everyone. I'm a pretty conservative guy so I can only imagine what stories are out there  8)
Well what to say.. You read my thought aloud

Breaking into the mobile development industry

Hello I appreciate the time you are taking to read my thread!
I have a background in real estate development and no programming experience. I already have a bachelors in Business (emphasis Finance). I am currently getting my MBA in an evening program at one of the top 20 schools in the world. I don't want to go back into real estate and want to get into the tech industry.
What I really want is to become a mobile applications developer (ios/andriod).
I can financially support my existence with a part-time job and the MBA really isn't that hard because I have an undergrad degree in business. These activities will take about 35 hours of my time a week, 45 hours during finals week.
So, I want to go back and get a degree so I can break into this field. So I am looking for recommendations.
Looking at the local state college it looks like the program is really outdated and I won't learn much practical knowledge. Having already done a bunch of college I don't really want to spend my time getting a degree to have another degree. I want to be at least relatively work force ready at graduation.
So it looks like my only option is to do an online degree.
I have identified a few options.
Full Sail, this was the only program I could find where you can specifically study Mobile development. I like that its completely project based because I will learn practical experience. Having a completed app by graduation will certainly help find a job I would think. It is however expensive and I have seen some complaints about the school online. However these complaints seemed to be mostly from people pursing a recording arts degree. IMO its crazy to pursue a degree where thousands of people graduate for only a few new openings a year. Could probably graduate in about 2 years.
Western Governors University. Has lots of good reviews online and is quite inexpensive ($6000 a year). Also you get 18 tech certifications as you go through the program. I am worried it will be less practical and it will certainly take more time. Also, its in "software" in general. So I would need to spend additional time after graduation getting more certifications and building an app to get hired most likely.
Baker College, I haven't heard much about it. It's also pretty inexpensive. Looks like it could take a while.
I have also seen Mobile development certifications from Champlain College and University of Washington Online
I would love to hear of what tech professionals think about these degrees/programs. Also, if you have heard of any other options please let me know!
Sorry I'm not a tech pro but I did enroll into Full Sail Mobile App program. I am starting on the 30th of this month. I did 3 months of extensive research including some of the schools you mentioned, and from what I have found is that Full Sail offers the best Mobile Program you can find. The applications they teach you to use is future proof. What I mean by that for example is once you learn Adobe CSS 5.5, it will be easy to transition into CSS 6, or 6.5 when it does come out. The only down side I see to it is that you are going to pay for it. The program is expensive $57,000 total for a B.A.S. From what I see is its worth it, if your serious about pursuing this career field, Full Sail is the way to go if you can afford it. Its either this or learn old soon to be outdated tools at other schools only to end up trying to catch up even after you graduate.
breaking in to the mobile dev industry
I have a similar interest in getting started in the mobile app development industry. i agree with the initial poster that going to a brick and mortar school to learn will soon be outdated once you graduate. It's hard for them to keep up with the changing nature of the industry.
I have zero experience in programming and mobile app development. As I learn about the field, I have more questions.
I haven't looked into the different programs available, but I would imagine there are some free resources to learn some basics without having to go through a degree. What does a degree even mean? I feel that being able to create something tangible is more valuable than a piece of paper. I'm sure there is a benefit to the degree as it gives you the necessary background information. W3schools offers free online training in a plethora of disciplines...html, css xml...and so on. I just need to find out which ones I need to focus on, and how to put it all together.
60K for a degree is a lot. Hope you are able to find a job afterward to pay off the loan, or if you're lucky to recoup the investment of the tuition.

I have had several go arounds with this problem. I finally got past it by a very odd maneuver. Yes, I am using Win7 (there are more than one version so I want to leap to the conclusion that some versions act differently).
Anyway I followed the second method of getting the drivers to load listed in "tips and tricks" stickey (modify Device Manager so hidden devices/drivers can be seen and deleted, I had over a hundred driver in at least four different locations to delete). When I observed the right type of device show up in Device Manager I pull the USB cable, crashing the install (on my PC the cable was only connected for between 1-2 seconds). Hopefully in the USB driver area there is a new composite device which I believe is needed. I then fired up the root script the instant I reconnect the device. Yes, PnP does take off again but the script is running too and it worked!
I can't say if I ever got the drivers in the nroot directory to load. I must have tried this a hundred times before I stumbled onto the crash the install by pulling the cable move. So in my Device Manager the new Nook had a working driver.
The other thing you need to be sure of is that you set USB debug switch and unselect the automount switch; which must be done everytime the Nook is turn on even if when you check they appear to be set you need to cycle through and reset them. I used the hidden keys application (Play Store), which works and has a built in OTA blocker along with a bunch of other stuff.
Good luck, let us know how it goes!

Please be gentle with the Noob....

I haven't any idea where else to post this question. I'm an Army Vet. Massive PTSD and other psychiatric liabilities. I mention that as a preface to saying I don't get out of the house (well, Boat, actually much. However, I am always very intellectually active. I am fascinated and enthralled by my study of Android in particular and computing in general. I've been like a trained monkey on computers since they arrived on the scene. But the last year I am slowly becoming a geek (small 'g', please). I've taught myself rooting and a few other tricks, but in utter isolation. This site is my gold standard for information. The amount of time and energy that the senior and junior members pour into this site is truly amazing. Thanks.
Question - how would one go about finding a local mentor. I would like to find someone to discuss things with in person. This would, I know from my years at various universities, put wings on my otherwise slow learning curve. I've thought about going to the local university (in Portland, Oregon, otherwise known as the coolest, most Hip city on the Left Coast) but, as I say above, this is difficult. So, if anyone can throw me a bone in this regard, my finger will ache from hitting the 'thanks' button repeatedly. Again, to all you contributors, you Dudes are awesome, to say the very least. Your passion for all things Android is showing beneath you skirts .

PC Hardware Coverage for XDA in 2020

Hello everyone!
I didn't know where to really put this and the forums are still one of the places I feel most comfortable on the web.
In 2019 we did a far better job of covering more new PC hardware components than the previous year. Some of our reviews took longer than expected, but I stand behind my findings. Late in the year some personal matters required that I put the brakes on releasing new reviews. We ended the year with more reviews than before, but we still start 2020 with several reviews in the pipeline that were not completed last year.
In the past year we've taken your feedback. We understand not everyone is happy when a review doesn't come out the same day as the product releases. For those outlets this is their primary coverage. We work with what we can, and I'm very thankful that XDA continues to support the coverage as something beyond its primary coverage of Android and Android devices.. I do believe that our tests and reviews are both useful and necessary, no matter when they go live. Our continued focus on Linux serves an audience that even now still has very few in-depth reviews globally. Investigating situations that may be missed not only provides answers for questions that may be unanswered, but as I found out recently those lessons can still give answers years later.
I'm also very thankful for the XDA leadership and Portal team in their support and flexibility to continue this coverage while I am still dealing with some very serious personal matters. I wish at some point that I could explain just what is going on and how debilitating that can be at times. I suspect those who have gone through similar situations would understand. The only thing I can say is to please always take care of those around you. This goes beyond friends and family - think of the people you work or go to school with. How about the person you run into every morning? Everyone has their own life and not everyone may be having an easy go at it. Sometimes the hardest thing for us is to reach out for help. For others, that hardest thing may be offering help to others.
Try to help others when you can. When you need help, ask. You may find support in places you never expected. If you think something is going on that they may not be able to talk about, at least reach out and see if they may need help. Offer to be an ear or to even listen. They may not be able to tell you what's going on. They may not be able to take that assistance. But sometimes just knowing that there is support may do more than you see at the time. Donate not just to the big causes, think about how you can help others in your community. We're all trying to make our way through that journey that we call life.
I expect to resume writing again soon. Reviews where the tests have already been completed will be first up. Then we'll start with the reviews of components already here and ready to go into the test bench. I'm also looking into the possibility of resuming videos - something I stopped when I relocated in 2018. Most of the "behind the scenes" changes required for me to resume that was addressed last year. My biggest concern is honestly creating enough of a finished space so I don't have to set up and tear down between videos.
We've got even more planned for 2020 than we did the year before, so hope you'll stick around and continue reading our foray into something more than Android on XDA!
I'll review any hardware you ship to me!!!
I'll write a meticulous professional article informed by 30 years of reading hardware websites / BBSes.
