What can be taking up RAM at bootup? - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

When I soft boot my XDA and go check the memory, it says for Programs I have 7 meg in use.
Now what can that be? I cooked a 4.00.11 ROM with all the goodies on Jeff's Kitchen, so all the programs I am using are on there.
I installed a few games to the SD card, but as far as I know I didn't install anything in the built in memory.

something dodgy found regarding SD cards?

Hi,
I upgraded to the 4.01.00 build of 2003. I decided after a bit that I missed the stuff I could add in from the kitchen and also for some reason when I tried to install something to the SD card it would just create a cab file on the card... So I manually started the cab installer from the location and it automatically installed the software into main memory?
I went back to a new brew of yorch's kitchen using 4.00.16 with hopes that this would be resolved...
I dont seem to have any problems accessing the SD card.. the data is transfered over fine... although I set Activesync to use the sd card it only ever copies the cab file and then shows the program not installed.... if I go to the SD card I can see and run the cab file copied over by activesync... but it only copies it to memory
I thought cab files installed relative to your current location (i.e) you run an install from the SD.. it gets installed to the SD.. run it from the main memory and it gets installed to the main memory.. etc.
But I'm totally confused as to why activesync refuses to install anything onto the SD card itself.
Has anyone else recieved this problem? know how to fix it? any ideas?
currently it appears I can only use the SD card for music/files or whatever I want to store rather than install other programs...
cheers for any help,
Ian.
I would uninstall your current version of activesync and install version 3.7.1. If you have 3.7.1, I would do a reinstall. It sounds like the issue isn't your SD card or the ROM that is loaded.
upps, on my XDA I everything works fine ...
I mean installing software to SD card and running the software from SD card, others things are not that smooth .... but the above mentioned is ok
I do use WM2003, version 4.0.21 T-Mobile ROM
regards,
monika
Just thought I'd add how I fixed the problem...
I stopped using this
http://www.iliumsoft.com/site/fg/dockware.htm
everytime I hard reset my device the first thing I'd do was install 3 programs...
Iliumsoft Dockware Pro
Tillanosoft Small Menu Plus
Omega One Battery Pack 2004
On that build (4.01.00) of the ROM Dockware would pretend to install by activesync... but it wouldnt even copy over or anything...
After doing that, the rest of the software would follow straight into main memory whither I asked it to or not.... the exception to this case was a few programs like Resco explorer and a few games that did install to the card.
Everything else just copied the cab files over to the sd card.. and then when you installed the cab files from there, they went into main memory.
So.... I hard reset the device and didnt install DockWare at all.... every piece of software installs fine now without a hitch...
Strange huh?
MOTD: dont use Dockware on later builds of 2k3 heh

Memory allocation, T-mobile stored install data

I decided to have a go at ROM upgrade, originally had WM2003.
upgraded to the WM2005 and everything worked ok, but memory was reduced from 128 to 64.
I then had problems installing tomtom 5 and also would no longer communicate with a PC,
Decided to go back to WM2003, but could only find a 2003SE ROM.
anyway installed that, and when it booted, memory was back to 128 and it also started installing all of the T-mobile programs again,
Is there any way to remove this installer? or remove the programs, as most came up with a message that they were for an older version of windows.
they did not install on WM2005 though, which probably explains the missing memory.
this has cured the problem of communicating with a PC, now detects the device correctly and starts activesync.
I have looked in the remove programs to try and uninstall the T-mobile data, it would be good to get rid of it and free up more memory, does anyone know how to do this?
wm2005 beta that you used
use the FLash of storage and extented rom for data
and all the ram on the device as normal ram
because devices not made for 2005 only have 32MB storage
people cant install much on their device
on 2003 ram is devided between normal ram and Data ram
where you install programs
ppl made it so they use some of the 128Program ram as a ram disk
so they have more storage space then 32MB
this is why your device only had 64MB because the rest was made into a ramdisk
when a 2003 device hardreset some of the storage called extented rom have programs which are auto installed
on 2005 that space is used for normal storage
so programs dont auto install on 2005
if you unlock your extented rom Look Wiki.xda-develoers.com
you can remove cab files you dont want it to auto install when you use 2003 you just unhide and unlock the extented rom remove the cab files you dont want remove their entry from the config.txt and lock and hide the extented rom again and hardreset

Program vs. Storage memory in WM 6.1?

I built and loaded DCD's 2.3.0 kitchen last night. First I built and loaded his bare kitchen and got pretty much the same memory numbers as in his first post. When I added a bunch of extra OEMs I expected the free program memory to go down, but was surprised to see the total storage memory go down too.
What caused the total storage memory to go down? Roughly 10 MB got loaded into storage memory, so is there a way to force more apps into that memory and free up more program memory?
In the screen shots below, the green one is DCD's (from 2.2.0 I think) and the blue one is mine with 2.3.0 and the loaded kitchen, immediately after a reboot.
Maybe I can explain this better. I'm trying to load as much stuff in the kitchen as I can, while still having a stable and usable device, but maybe that's the wrong way to go about it.
Is there a way with the kitchen to force more apps to install to storage memory or the storage card, and free up more program memory? If not, can this be done with UC?
Would installing some of my kitchen OEMs to the storage card as CABs instead, either manually or with UC, increase my free program memory?
If you are familiar with how a computer works, you should think of it this way:
Strorage Memory = Hard Drive
Program Memory = RAM
SD Card = External Hard Drive
So, as you build various programs into your custom ROM, they may (depending on the program) take up both Storage and Program Memory. An example of a program which would do this, for instance, would be SPB Weather. Why? Because (a) you load the program into the ROM, where it gets installed onto your Storage Memory. Then, when you turn your phone on, SPB Weather automatically runs, so it's also taking up some Program Memory as well. If a particular program you load into your ROM does not automatically start with the phone, then it would only take up Storage Memory and NOT Program Memory, until such time you actually run the program.
Loading programs onto your SD Card instead of the Storage Memory would obviously give you more free Storage Memory, but it may or may not give you more free Program Memory, again depending on what particular program you are loading. Additionally, many programs run slower (or might even be incompatible) running off the SD Card.
Thanks for the explanation, I think I've got it now. So installing a program, whether through burning with a kitchen as an OEM, or separately with a CAB, makes no difference to the amount of program memory used? Installing to the storage card, or extended ROM if unlocked, only reduces the amount of storage memory used, right?
If this is correct, it sounds like if I will be burning often, installing a minimal kitchen with only the OS and other necessary system files, using OEMizer to personalize the kitchen, then using UC to install all the extras as CABs from the storage card, sounds like the most efficient way to go. Do you agree?
I haven't read up on UC yet, but will it allow installs from the storage card to the storage card?

App2SD: Duplicate SD Card

Hi,
I am running Cyanogen 6.1 with APP2SD running, and have an 8GB SD Card with apps installed on it. I recently bought a new 16GB SD Card and was wondering how I duplicate the contents of my 8GB SD Card to the 16GB SD Card.
Any ideas would be VERY helpful.
I never tried, but I think it should be enough if you copy contents from the old one to the new one using a computer.
Sent from my HTC Hero
Unless you are using the native Froyo Apps-to-SD and not the old solution, then you can't just copy the files on a computer. Using the old system the apps are stored on a completely separated partition to what is shown when you mount your SD Card.
You can probably access that partition if you are using Linux, but having never used the old Apps2SD I can't check it myself.
I thought that might be the case. Linux laptop here I come!!
I recently bought a 16GB card and my Hero started to lag and restart SENSE randomly
Please reply to know if you have this issue
Hi,
I haven't put the 16GB in yet, as I have Apps installed to my 8GB SD Card and didn't know what to do (good job I have a linux based laptop really).
Sadly (not for me, but you know what I mean...) my ROM doesn't have SENSE. I am running CyanogenMOD 6.1.0.
What ROM are you running, I may know what the issue is?

I am running the villainrom12 with sense and i have overclocked it to 352/652
I'm such a dumbass... what "class" is the SD Card? And which elements of the ROM are laggy?
I noticed that this is a 2.1 ROM...

I have a class4 memory card, and when i am launching some apps htc sense just force closes and the app i wanted to open just quits, after it is happened several times, htc senses starts to force close again and again until phone starts to lag and then hangs up.
From what I understand, VillainROM12 is a SENSE 2.1 ROM. I can't understand why this would lag, other than the implementation of SENSE isn't the patched version with the LAG fix. Early versions of SENSE were terrible and HTC had to release a patch to fix the lag issues.
The force close issue could either be down to the app timing out or something isn't installed properly. I can't really tell without installing VillainROM on my phone (I have CyanogenMOD 6.1 which, in my opinion, is flawless). My ROM isn't sense orientated, it uses apps like Launcher Pro plus (I think it comes with ADW.Launcher by default) instead of sense. ADW does have a theme pack to make it look like HTCs SENSE app.
I would suggest a couple of things;
Check available RAM
Back up your SD Card and reformat it as follows;
EXT2 = 512MB (You can use more, but you shouldn't need to)
(DO NOT use EXT3 or EXT4, these partition types are kernel dependent, and will lower the life of your card, they are intended for large partitions of like 50GB upwards)
SWAP = 0MB
FAT = The rest
I use AmonRA Recovery 1.7.0.1 which has a very useful partition SD card feature, better than ClockworkMods anyway (Evertime I partitioned a card in ClockworkMOD the phone refused to boot). Unfortunately if you have any apps installed to the SD card you may lose them unless you move them back to the phone (If you go Settings > Applications then click on "On SD Card" this will give you a list of "moved" apps).
Again, if you HAVEN'T got any apps on the SD card this could be the problem, as you are using ALL your phones RAM to store apps in, so like a PC running low on memory, no RAM means poor performance.
Try checking available resources before re-partitioning your SD Card. If you can't see what memory is available to you, try an app ion the market place called App 2 SD Free by Sam Lu, it's free, and gives you a readout of exactly what memory is being used (it also gives you a list of apps you CAN move to the SD card). I'd use it for diagnostics for now, as I don't know if VillainROM12 comes with APP2SD installed by default.
Try these out and let me know how you get on. PLEASE make a nandroid backup first, this CAN restore your SDCARD if the partition goes wrong.
Please be advised that I take no responsibility for any issues that may occur. I have performed all these tasks on my HTC Hero with no problems though.
I have tried these things but nothing helped. I have done everything the same with same type 8GB card and there was no problem, i think that HERO just cant handle 16GB but HTC says that it can support up to 32GB.

I can't really comment until I format my 16GB car and put it in (should be arriving this morning). Have you thought about another ROM? SENSE is notorious for causing lag. The guys at VillainROM also make FroydVillain (I think the latest version is 1.7.2). This doesn't have SENSE though, and you will need to backup your setting/messages/apps/and everything else first.
Backing up settings is slightly different to a nandroid. I recommend Backup Everything, as you can select what you want to back up. The only problem is you usually need to re-download the app on your new ROM to restore stuff, even if you backup apps too.
Update: Take a look at this thread for other ROMs
Sorry I can't be of more use...
