Viewing Bootimages - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

Got a little Problem with two bootimages.
How can i view them on a normal Windows Machine.
Tried it with IrfanView. It works for most of the bootimages, but not for two of them.
How can help me and can convert them into Jpgs????
Stefan

splitrom can extract bootsplash images to .bmp, which may be displayed upside down by some viewers. most image editing softwar ( like paint ) can convert bmp to jpg

The Problem is, that this is not working for all the bootimages.
Uploaded on the ftp bootimages.zip (which can´t be added here --> Upload Error: Could not upload Attachment to ./files/bootimages.zip.)
For those two in it i get only a black screen. But i´m sure it works when installing on the XDA.....
Stefan

ah, that means splitrom does not know where to find the bootsplash. this is not the same for all roms, splitrom has a list of offsets for known roms.
for other roms you have to specifiy it your self.
you have to specify it with the '-ob' option,
likely values are: 0x81900000 or 0x81ec0000.
xda-ii roms do not have the bootsplash stored in that part of the rom.

Ok. That was the problem. Had used the fsettings for 4.x Roms.....
My mistake.
Thx a lot.

XDA2 Boot Image's are NOW changable

During my quest to get rid of german software and get normal english, i have flashed my system like a million times,
then i got an 02 boot image
then a I-mate
then t-mobile
so its possible to change this image to your willing i guess
anyonen figured out what cab file in extended rom holds this image
maybe we can raw hack it
update
if you got an imate
its
Default_Imate.CAB
there are 2 files
0Splash1.005
0Splash2.004
if you run this cab, it will only edit the boot screens, so it turns into i-mate
i dont know how to edit these 2 files yet
they arent any format i know
hexedit read doesnt discover anything
any help here?
*** update
its a raw format
trying a picture in a bit
got a strange picture now
but he its working great
no hard reset needed or anything
still need to get the format right!
then we can all change our boot screen
When it extracts, it creates a files with a .nb extension i believe. I ran the CAB just for fun and cancelled it halfway through. Upon soft reboot, the top part of the "i-mate" logo was missing (as if just cut horizontally). Re-ran the cab, this time it worked fine.
Are these similar to the screens on the original XDA?
ladies and gentleman
You can now change your bootimages to your liking
*** link has been removed, the file is on page 2 ***
This prehistoric way will change
the boot pictures of your xda2
But it works
boot sequence has 2 pictures
1 will be at startup
and the next wil follow after 2 seconds
so you can make something nice
I included 2 working images, so you can test it you like.
Its supposed to be jennifer lopez and second image is matrix revolutions
step by step
------------
1. open a drawing program and maken 2 pictures
make sure they are saved in 320 height and 240
width. save them as normal BMP or JPG as you like
name them Splash1 and Splash2
2. acdsee 6.0 is required and easiest for this
open it and convert the pictures to
RSB RED STORM FILE FORMAT
setting for me where : use a specific resolution 64 megapixel
anti aliashing off
3. when its done rename the extensions to .NB
4.copy the cab file on your phone
and copy the Splash1.nb and Splash2.nb
in your windows folder
5.now run the CAB file
done
you can delete the 2 files Splash1.nc and Splash2.nc from your
windows map
basic
but works
**sometimes the image doesnt fit properly, i think the width must be adjusted.
will look into that later
Akira
akira, you are the man!
-arebelspy
Maybe you could have the cab file (at the end of its running) delete Splash1.nc and Splash2.nc for us?
-arebelspy
You can use WinCE CAB Manager (http://www.ocpsoftware.com/) to edit the CAB file to include the nb files.
Bam, I got matrix code as my bootup image.
-arebelspy
i was very tired yesterday and it was getting late, so i finished it quickly so other could try.
that cab thing is good, ill try this weekend to make something more handy
the file displacement is maybe because the file has to be exactly as big as the original. try that this weekend to..
IMO, keep the cab how it is. If you make the .nb files inside the cab, you'd have to download a new cab file every time you wanted to change the image, etc. It'd be a lot harder for people to change the startup images, how it is now works good, if it would just delete the two files for us.
-arebelspy
is your picture on the right place or displaced?
displaced.. that's why i replaced it with matrix code, so you couldn't tell
then again maybe it was how you saved the images that made it displaced? i just hit save and did it as that filetype, didnt bother to check about the 64 megapixel anti aliasing off thing.

Upgrade that today theme and splash screen!

The primary purpose of this thread is so that you can post your WM06 (and WM05) themes and splash screens; we will link this in the wiki. Over the next several days, I will be posting some simple instructions on replacing your splash screen and boot graphics, however that information can already be found in the wiki. Feel free to attach any today themes, splash screens, instructions etc.
When you post, please attach a picture so we know what we are downloading and zip file of the graphics so they are not resized by the server.
To get started I have attached a template for making a windows splash, as well as my template I personally use on my device. The "silence of the lambs" style picture hopefully scares the person into returning my device if lost or stolen. I included the templates in the zip file; you can edit your name and contact info; portrait version only. More to follow.

How do I change my windows splash screen?
Create or download the splash screen of your choice, it can be up to 320x320 and 96 dpi. Save the file as welcomehead.96.png and save it to the /windows directory of your device. You may need Resco Explorer or a similar tool to overwrite the current file.
The image should appear when you reboot.
I will attach some splash images below over the next several days.
How do I change the boot splash? From this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1140696&postcount=6
A method for 1.01 MFG can be found on the wiki; if you do not want to SuperCID your device permanently though, you need to use SSPL-HERM.exe.
Requirements
nb_image_converter.exe, e.g. from Hermes SplashScreen_Pack.zip
nbhgen.exe, e.g. from this forum topic
any official ROM image
Full steps
Create a BMP file in paint, size must be 240x320.
Save it as BMP 24bit.
Load it on nb_image_converter.exe and save it as splash.nb
open a cmd.exe command prompt on the folder where you saved your splash
run this command
copy /b splash.nb+padding.nb finalsplash.nb
Check that filesize of "finalsplash.nb" is exactly 262144 bytes.
create a samples.txt with the following contents
HERM200
HTC__001
1.23.707.6
USA
600,finalsplash.nb
601,finalsplash.nb
You may need to adjust HERM200 to HERM100 or HERM300 based on your model).
And you can have a different subsplash if you repeat steps 1 to 5 with a different file.
run the following command on a shell in the same folder:
nbhgen.exe sample.txt
extract the ROM image, e.g. with WinRAR
rename the .nbh file inside that folder to .bak
move your newly generated RUU_signed.nbh into the same folder
put SSPL-HERM.exe onto your device
run SSPL-HERM.exe on the device
check that the Tricolor screen will appear and show SPL-1.09.ds
run ROMUpgradeUt.exe
List compiled from three different existing tutorials - credits go to those! - and tested successful yesterday From CCRDude
I have only included files that I have created in this first post. If you would like your files added, please let me know. Both the PNG and JPG are included in the zip.

You dont need BOOTLOADER 1.01MFG,
Read MrVanx's guide http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=27
and follow it word for word.
If you dont want to replace the second splash then either dont include the SubSplash or use the existing one you have.
I followed his guide yesterday and it worked perfectly for me and ive got SPL:2.10.oli
I downloaded a screen splash on this thread:

I changed the second splash screen to WM crossbow only with a simple .cab. Can I create a .cab to install on device? It seems more easy... :?

How do I Change the boot splash screen

I've just managed to ahem, persuade Orange UK to sim unlock my Niki 12 weeks early.
The next thing I'd like to do is replace the orange boot splash screen to one of my own.
Maybe with one of R'kids stunning paintings http://www.artworkbysteve.co.uk/
Do I first need to CID unlock my Niki to do this?
Is there any software that is capable of doing this without bricking my phone?
I've done this previously with my wizard, but I'm still a little unsteady on my feet,
I need clear easy to follow step by step newbie instructions if anybody has the time.
Any help greatly appreciated,
Cheers.

To change the actual boot splash which contains the operator logo and ROM info text you need to flash it! the TD (Niki) has 4 splash screen as follows:
1-Primary Splash (Operator Logo)
2-Secondary Splash again operator logo with the ROM Protocol info at the bottom of screen in red.
3-Splash Gif animation
4-Splash Welcomehead i.e. WM6 splash you get before Today loads.
Splash 3 and 4 can easily be changed as mentioned here. I think what you need is to change Splash 1 and 2 if you want to get rid of the Orange logo however this can only be done through flashing (via customRUU) so you must make sure your TD has HardSPL otherwise you will end up bricking the device if you haven't check this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355730
At the moment I can only change the 1st Splash but can't seem to change the 2nd splash once I can figure out how, I will post the necessary files here
Here is a thread that shows how change your PrimarySplash screen. You do need to flash it, but its not that hard to do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=361287
second one is easy to change. Just rename any .png picture to welcomehead.96.png and put in Windows folder on phone, replacing the one that's there. Then soft reset.
Thanks
Cheers fellas, I appreciate your help.
odd problem with Welcomehead 96
Tried overwriting the welcomehead.96 file but it can't be overwritten,
checked the properties of the file and all the options (read only etc) are greyed out?
Copied the file to my hard drive and it cannot be seen, even when I have the show hidden files folder option checked?
I'd hazard a guess that the PNG file is hard coded to the memory chip? so a Rom flash may be needed?
But I still can't work out why the copied PNG on my hard drive would behave the way it is,
maybe just having a thick attack.
I haven't come across this before, can anyone shed some light on it?

[Boot Animation][PC] Gif2Boot - Create boot animations from GIF files (by BLuFeNiX)

I serendipitously discovered a PC utility for creating boot animations from GIF files. Navigate to this thread by Blufenix. It's self explanatory; just download the zip, extract, and run the Jar file.
Seems to work well. I used it to create this lovely Melanie Iglesias boot animation (attached, untested) :good:.
This is great! Check out the bootanimation I just made from Ace Ventura for my EVO 4G. Resolution 480x800. Feel free to use it yourself. Rename and place in the correct directory on your phone. Have fun!

The gif you provided is corrupted (specifically the first frame). I suggest you find a different source for this animation, or try to repair the gif with a tool like gifsicle, imagemagick, or some online gif editor. I tried to repair the gif myself (http://i.imgur.com/iLUXgw8.gif), but it looks bad (the first frame is a bit grainy), you can use it if you want, but I'm sure there is a better way to repair it.
jeffreylin_ said:
Ah, I see. Perhaps in the future you should implement a feature that notifies if the .gif is corrupted. I'll be using your image, it seems okay to me.
Oh, and how would one know if a gif is corrupted?

Yes, I should include that feature. This is the first time I've seen a gif corrupted in this way, so I didn't know what to look for until now.
I discovered that the gif was corrupted by making my program skip processing of the first frame (which made it run fine). This got me suspicious, so I opened the gif in an editor and saved it again. The other frames remained identical, but the first frame changed.
Thanks for using my program, and if you need anything else just let me know!
jeffreylin_ said:
Also, it seems that my phone is 480 by 800, not the other way around. When this was made into a boot animation, the program appears to have rotated the frames and then converted it. So on my phone it is horizontal. Just thought you might want to know.

Yes, that is an intended feature (I should probably make that more obvious with some kind of documentation). If the image is wider than it is tall, is will render in landscape. If you don't want that, you can try the "center frame" option. It will try to intelligently crop the sides of the image to fit your screen correctly, and render it right-side-up.
You should make more detailed instructions like
1. download
2. extract
3.open command window where you extracted (shift+ right click, open command window here)
4. type: "java -jar gif2boot.jar"
5. follow instructions on screen

Thanks, I wanted to restore my previous one but changing it in /system/media didn't do a thing
Doesn't work in Ubuntu
Tried to run as root, but I still get "IO error: do you have sufficient permissions for the file system?". Is there anyone who has managed to run this on Linux?

How can I change the BootScreen and LoadingScreen?

Hey Guys,
I want to change my BootScreen & LoadingScreen, but I don't know, how.
Could you tell me how I can edit them?
The SplashScreen is already changed (SplashScreen changer from wph)

Don't know what do you mean by "splashscreen changer" but if you are talking about WP7.X - Splash screen consists of specially compressed bmp file in XIP - oemlogo.bm_ and the same but not compressed file in OEM - mo_logo.bmp, Also it's possible to use third file - also regular bmp called mologo.bmp. Changing regular bmp is easy - just to copy them to \Windows of your phone. Compressed bmp should be cooked in. If you change only uncompressed files - you get first stock bootlogo, than custom one on boot - this sucks.
Loading screen is a png resource inside shellFrame.dll. If you want to change it - the correct way is to create custom mui - shellFrame.dll.XXXX.mui (XXXX - your default booting lang) with only modified windowsphone logo and copy it into \Windows of your phone.
Reboot is required to see your attempts working.

Heya, thank you for this info,
I changed "mo_logo.bmp" (I already change mologo.png with windowsphonehacker.com/articles/experimental_splash_changer-04-25-12 )
I can see the "HTC-Logo", but I want to replace it with my picture.
I can't find "shellFrame.dll" on my phone.

I told you - it's in XIP. That means - it should be cooked in while building the rom image. Do you know how to cook custom roms? If not - than it's nothing to discuss - you won't be able to change logo completely. Only the second part of it's appearance.

It's in Windows folder of the phone and it's hidden. You will hardly be able to copy it even if you see it.
So - you should get this file from ready-to-cook build uploaded in developer's thread and modify it with any resource editor.
