Serieus GPS + COM help needed - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

I have a Holux gps unit, the required connector cable and an XDA I. I don't seem to be able to get any communication established between my XDA and the gps unit!
- I have the irda connection checkbox unchecked.
- I have ROM A.30.09 ENG (is there a newer/better one by the way?)
- I have run the GSPViewer tool from Holux, which reports COM ports 1,2,3,8,9 with 'None', the rest with 'Open failed'. Should it report the gps unit if found?
Can anyone point in the right direction please?
Kind regards,
Brinkie

Do you have a clip on keyboard or anything with a driver hogging COM1?

Nope, nothing connected besides the gps unit...
COM1 would definately be the port the gps unit would be hooked up to if connected to the XDA?

Yes COM1 is the Sync Port at the bottom. Are you able to test this on another XDA or SPV E200 as it could be a duff unit.

No, I'm not. I thought of trying that of course
I know the gps unit is fine, because I have tried another unit (other brand) as well with the same result. It has something to do with the COM port of my XDA, but I just can't figure out what it is. It could be duff, yes, but I was hoping someone else had had the problem as well and figured out what to do to fix it...

Whenever this happens it is almost always another app that is hogging the COM Port, normally it's a clip on keyboard or external keyboard driver but there could be other apps causing this.
One other thought and my apologies if this is a stupid question! You do have 12v power to the Holux don't you? All external GPS Mice require a power source to function.

Yes, I have. So I'm out of options then? Figures...

go to connections and turn off the checkmark in beams

Do you have the keyboard app in your rom, if you do it will activate after every reset, if you dont then I would suggest that you may have a faulty line on your connecter on the xda. There is nothing else you can do regarding the coms ports, if the beams is unchecked, keyboard is disabled then it should work, I have installed many gps units to the xda and never had this problem so compatability isnt an issue either. One more thought, is the gps definitely for xda as the ipaq 3800 series connecter looks identical but the lines are different.

I have it unchecked.

The unit and cable are for the XDA for sure. How do I know/check I have the keyboard app in my ROM? I don't see anything strange installed in 'add/remove programs'.

The external keyboard is not under settings, it is under programs/misc on mine.

I did have same problem as you, my GPS is Holux GM210 with XDA I. But now everything is fine and I enjoy using it. Actually nothing wrong with your com port and cable (if you make sure it was XDA cable). The point is you have to initialize it for first time using. First of all, you have to uncheck the "turn off device on battery power if not used for" and leave the Irda connection checked box because nothing wrong with it. Connect your GPS unit to power source and your XDA, then leave it for about 30-40 minutes (make sure your XDA is not automatic turn off). After that you can check your GPS unit from GPSViewer (from Holux) by click on the "open GPS", you will see all the informations from your GPS unit. That's it, now you can enjoy your GPS. Next time you connect your GPS to xda, it take about 1-3 seconds you will see com port open (com port 1 baud rate 4800). If you do a hard reset, you have to do the whole thing again. Enjoy your GPS....

I haven't tried that yet! If that works, why isn't that stated in the manual???
Thanks a lot! I'll go try that right now!

which GPS for a 32mb XDA

I wondered if anyone has any advice on which gps system works best? i heard that tom tom 2 software is good??
any advice. thanks
Yes, as a mapping software TomTom RoutePlanner and CityMaps are very good and also good value for money. As a GPS receiver, I use a Garmin III connected to the XDA with a serial cable fitted with a null modem adapter. Any GPS receiver transmitting NMEA 182v2 at 4800 over a serial connection will work with the XDA serial cable and a null modem (crossover between pin 2 & 3 on the DB9).

Navman gps-1000
I saw a gps at www.navman.com to use everywhere, in the car , walking in the mountains etc...
This device is for a lot of pocket pc.
Any1 knows if this device also works with the XDA, I know the tomtom navigator 2 kit does work with the XDA but this kit can only be used in a car and is in walking mode not small.
Thanks
I am trying to get a garmin ETREX working with the XDA but thought the serial cable works and i am be able to connect to the serial port of the computer and do a sync that way the comm ports do not seem to be able to see the data output of the GPS which is present by checking it with a comm program.
any suggestions ???
I am using the VITO map software and VITO navigator.
also curious of the pharps GPS specifically for PPCE Phone
any one heard anything about this
???
I have just been able to get the etrex work fine with a palm. can't connect it to my xda yet as i don't have a serial cable.
two things to watch for...
there should be an odd number of cross-overs in the connecting cable. my palm cable has rx/tx crossed and so does the etrex cable so i had to use a third crossed cable to make three crosses between the palm and the gps (will solder a proper lead later).
on the etrex set it to MNEA
I don't know which one is good, but I can definitely tell you that the Pharos product is total crap.
Anybody wanna buy one cheap?
gps for xda
I have tried the tomtom gps mouse which is an integrated gps/antenna with tomtom 2 and it works beautifully, very fast to first lock and very accurate. Also available is the Haicom 203 unit, this is supplied with the power lead as well, the bonus for both these units is that you can exchange the data/power cables for those that will fit laptops and other pda's, so you can have 1 unit and cables for several devices. The cables for these 2 units are unfortunately not interchangable as the tomtom is made by Leadtek. The Haicom can be bought as a complete kit requiring only xda and memory card for £79.99 inc vat. from GPS warehouse in UK. I got delivery in 48 hours.
gps xda
the haicom also requires software, the tomtom gps comes with tomtom2 or you can buy it as part of the destinator kit, anybody needing this software to "test", let me know.

Serial cable or BT serial adapter?

I'm looking for a serial cable for my Cingular 8125. I'd like to be able to connect to network equipment via a console cable and not have to drag out my laptop.
If this won't work ahs anyone tried this with a BT serial adapter for the network equipment.
I know I'm not the only network tech around on these forums.
J-Man5
Bump.
This would be a fantasic enhancement. It would save me a small fortune if I could connect the device to other hardware.
Just made a cable for my MDA but need info on com port setup
Hey J-Man5, I have been looking everywhere for such a cable to no avail. So I decided to put one together myself. Just finished it today, but I have not tested it on any network routers yet. It is made for Cisco console ports. My problem though is that I so far haven't truly figured out how to get the MDA to use com-port 1 mode on the mini-USB connector. Again I have searched everywhere for any info on this but it must be a secret. I am planning on using a terminal program called PowerTerm Mobile which looks great, but again, I haven't tested it. Were you ever able to get anything to work for you? And does anyone know how to get MDA into Comm-port mode?
Thanks
Any updates on this? I'm interested in using a Wizard with the AutoEnginuity OBD-II scanner, and that needs a serial interface (don't want to fork out for the less optimal BT interface).
I found this:
http://www.gomadic.com/pocphonserad.html
...anybody tried it?

That cable posted above won't work beause it's not compatible with the wizard aka T-Mobile MDA III. They started using the mini usb at that point.
CompUSA is selling the Motorola DC800 Bluetooth Stereo Transceiver for $39.99. It shows up as a COM port in its bluetooth settings.
The problem with this, though, is it still connects with a mini 5-pin USB cable (not included).
Not quite sure how to map this into your application, but at about retail for a cable/pigtail, might be worth checking into.
p.s. Sound quality resembles that described by many HT820 owners, with pops, skips, random dropouts, and excessive noise. (At least with the MS Bluetooth stack) So a data application would (hopefully) be its forte....

Yeah, now that I have a Wizard (yay!) I realised that the port was different. Too bad. I guess the nearest thing would be a Bluetooth-Serial adapter like one of these:

Spendy, though. :-(

why not go for an OBD product with bluetooth built in? like OBDKey (www.obdkey.com)

Is there a known issue with active sync dropping on TG01?

Have picked up a second hand TG01, the power cable is loose as is the usb cable.
When connected via usb active sync and charging drops after a short period of time.
Is this a common issue? are there any fixes? Does anyone know which pin in the mini usb deals with sync?
thanks

I have had this problem as well
had? Did you manage to fix it?
As far as i know I dont think so. you probable have afaulty usb cable.
try blutoothe activesync perhaps? or buy a new cable from ebay they are very cheap!
had the same Problem, so I changed to BT
anoying on big files ->> so a solution would be handy
My ActiveSync also keeps dropping, I have new cables but its still the same.
Sometimes its fine for hours and other times it dies after a few minutes but what I do is to open settings, connections and usb-pc and change to mass storage mode then change back to ActiveSync.
Tried different roms (6.1 seems to last the longest) on different machines and with different cables but nothing seems to work reliably.

That's a known problem with TG01. I prefer using Wifi connection with Pocket Controller
I know you can use BT/WiFi but they suck the battery
I like to let my TG01 'trickle charge' from USB especially considering the small battery Toshiba gave us.

Sorry, I don't understand. USB charge always works for me (orange led lighting) don't matter if connection works or not! Even with USB connection switched to mass storage.

yes, pere- on my tg01 too!
Hi guys, yes usb charging works for me and when in mass storage mode but I dont want to connect via wifi/bt when activesync dies.
I would prefer for the TG01 not to keep loosing the activesync connection
To solve this, i restart my TG01. Right after the restart, i can transfer big files or list huge directories (\Windows i.e.) without connection Loss.
mine doesnt actually connect with the phone in mass storage mode, the connection is REALLY temperamental even on a mains charger - once its connected its fine but I sometimes have to try 20+ times before it starts charging.
I have also tried a new charger and a different usb cable.
This evening having fully charged it I have just installed the 6.1 mirom14 to see if it is any better but no *sob*

WIFI problem, doesn't start at all

Hi,
i have problem with wifi on my tg01 orange. It won't start. However it started twice after many attemps, when i tested this phone immediatelly after receiving, but later never again. I tested several roms with different radioroms. At this moment depending on rom version after clicking on wifi icon i have message "in preparation, please wait" or just nothing. Can i do something with it or it is hardware issue ?
What is more, after plugging headphones cable nothing happen. Does tg01 should autodetect headphones cable ?
Regards, Tom

Tom,
WiFi - Forgive if 'teaching granny'; use Wireless Manager to turn on WiFi. Then Start|Settings|WiFi Settings and you should get a display of any available WiFi devices. If nothing showing, tap 'Add New' to allow insertion of the SSID info for a known device and force a search. Are you able to check connectivity with your hub using another WiFi enabled phone or PC in the same location ? Assuming that works OK, try seeing if the WiFi adapter for that device can be detected by the TG01 in close proximity. If you are not getting anything at this point, then I'm afraid it suggests a probable hardware issue with the radio in your TG01. Depending on where/how purchased, you may be able to go back to the vendor if within warranty; alternatively it may be worth contacting the authorised Toshiba Repair Centre in the UK - Regenersis Ltd in Scotland. They would have the necessary facilities to test/repair.
Audio Output - the TG01 uses the newer micro-USB port standards. This defines a single port capable of multiple functions: Charging, Analogue Audio Out (+mic), Data (USB sync) and also USB Host capability. It does this under processor control by sensing the type of device being attached. One aspect is based on the resistance seen between the 0V pin and Pin 5 ( a special 'sense' pin). For audio output, it uses the resistance across the D+ and D- (Pins 2 and 3). If you plug in earphones or similar which have too low a resistance, it will not recognise them and therefore will not switch the audio output from the phone speaker to the uUSB port. The supplied audio adapter includes appropriate resistors. You can also buy simple uUSB to 3.5mm adapters which include or can make or adapt your own. There are references to this with more detail in this post in a different thread.
Good luck, and hope you are able to get the TG working properly
Regards,
Kevin
Thanks for reply.
1.wifi problem isn't in network search or connect, but in turning on. I can not turn it on. When i'm trying to turn it on i see "in preparation, please wait" - this is what happening on original orange ROM. Now i'm using miROM1_cfc and there is just no reaction when i try to turn it on.
2.headphones - i'm not sure that i understand everything. So if i will put 500ohm resistor between D+ and GND(0V) and between D- and GND(0V) and such a prepared cable i will connect to phone ,it will cause headphone mode ? if yes, it didn't work for me.
Is this specification of audio detection same for miniUSB and htc diamond ?

WiFi - It's pointing to hardware I'm afraid. But if you are willing to try another ROM, suggest try my WM6.5 edition (see link in my sig) and see what happens with that. It's using Radio 0300.76. If that also shows the same symptoms then I think you will need to look for a repair.
Headphones - yes should work OK. A baseline check would be to just plug in the supplied headphone adapter - does that work ? If so then there is nothing wrong with the phone and in which case I'd recommend checking you are using the correct pins on the uUSB plug and/or that there are no solder whiskers between contacts or similar (apologies if 'teaching Granny' here ). I'm not familar with any devices using a mini-usb in a similar manner - only one I've had with mini-USB was a Motorola RAZR3 but that was essentially just a 'dumb' hardwired USB port. The re-configurable approach only arrived with the introduction of the uUSB standard along with the TG01, HD2 and similar. Don't know about HTC Diamond, but in general HTC used a proprietary 11-pin connector which includes dedicated separate audio out as well as data and charging capabilities.
Best regards,
Kevin

No it isn't working that is why i'm asking.
To eliminate all problems that can be found at this headphone adapter i created special cable.
I used uUSB->USB cable (included with phone) and USB cable removed from mouse, so i can easily attach here resistor for test purpose.
And once again if i will put e.g. 500ohm resistor between D+ and GND and second resistor between D- and GND(no headphoes connected), this should force headphone mode ?

I'm very sorry - can't think of any other simple checks re the WiFi just now.
However still some hope with the headphone output - I can now see from your photo that you have used the uUSB to USB A Host adpater - the plug on this is internally wired with a short between pins 4 and 5 (0V and the Sense pin). That causes the device to go into Host mode - so it is expecting to see a USB Flash Drive or similar on the end - not headphones. You need a lead with a basic uUSB B (that's the shaped connector with black insert rather than this one which is rectangulat with a white insert).
When I mentioned the 'original connector' previously, I was referring to checking with the supplied earphone/mic cable....
Hope that helps resolve...

[Q] [HELP] 3g stick not activating

Hi guys,
The archos addon 3g usb stick doesnt activate when switched on through the control panel? It will only activate if I reboot the tablet but nothing happens when using the quick access settings (control) panel or the regular settings panel. Major drag!
Is it a bug or is there anything I can do about it?
Cheers,
Rick
I'm having the same issue sometimes, sometimes it works.
What might be happening is port itself going bad as Archos seems to have used a flimsy ribbon cable on the 3G port. Since the port can actually move in and out it stresses the ribbon cable and breaks the data traces in it.
See this post over on the Archos Fans website. It has pictures in it showing the ribbon cable in question. It seems the power traces can still deliver power but the data traces are smaller and pretty much get destroyed.
So the port will get power, but not able to send data essentially.

I had this once and sent my 80G9 to Archos to get it repaired. A solution is not to slide the stick out, so the cable is not stressed to much. On the new one I sometimes have the problem that it takes a while to connect to the 3G stick or I need to reboot. But it depends on the firmware aswell.

The internal cable connection is one issue... the hardware design itself and the driver/software is another.
Please have a look at dmesg output if the 3G stick refuses to connect.
There seems to be some trouble to detect devices on the host port in general after a while. A reboot generally fixes these issues.
Might be something with the USB PHY not getting resetted properly or other things after sending the device to sleep...
Anyway as long as the stick works after reboot it's more or less acceptable for me.
Have fun!
scholbert
I checked the dmsg log after connecting and switching the port on & off. This produces various errors such as 'cannot enumerate device' and 'write error on temp directory' and bunch of other problems which might or might not have anything to do with the issue concerning the secondary cpu boot. It seems the driver had been implemented poorly. The only thing that works consistently is rebooting the device but as soon as it's gone to sleep for a short period, it cannot activate the 3gstick anymore. Please note this is the original Archos 3G stick which cost me an extra 65euro's on top of the 300euro's I spent on the G9....
